Insects As Indicators Of Climate Change: A Literature Review, Amy Catalano
Insects As Indicators Of Climate Change: A Literature Review, Amy Catalano
Department of Entomology: Distance Master of Science Projects
The International Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) has consistently predicted rising global temperatures since it began reporting in 1988. Researchers have noted that climate extremes have been identified beginning in the 1990s and are apparent in various climate indicators. The most recent IPCC reports show that the rate of warming has sped up considerably, and that global warming will increase from pre-industrial levels by 1.5 degrees Celsius in the next 30 years, and possibly by 2 degrees C if considerable mitigation efforts are not put in place (IPCC, 2021). By 2017 global temperatures had already increased by about 1 degree …
A Review Of The Repellency Properties Of Pyrethrins, Gary Frazier
A Review Of The Repellency Properties Of Pyrethrins, Gary Frazier
Department of Entomology: Distance Master of Science Projects
Pyrethrum is an insecticide created from the dried flower heads of plants in the genus Chrysanthemum. The six compounds responsible for the insecticidal activity are collectively known as pyrethrins, and are known individually as Pyrethrin-I, Pyrethrin-II, Cinerin-I, Cinerin-II, Jasmolin-I, and Jasmolin-II. Of these compounds, Pyrethrin-I is best known for mortality, and Pyrethrin-II is best known for knockdown activity (Sisay et al. 2001). These compounds are voltage gated sodium-ion channel disruptors acting on nerve cells. The inside of nerve cells is negative relative to the outside at rest. It is due to an imbalance between ions on either side of the …
Irradiance Source For Exoplanet Atmospheric Spectra, Savannah Lyons
Irradiance Source For Exoplanet Atmospheric Spectra, Savannah Lyons
Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations
The quantity and diversity of the known exoplanets have grown in recent years. This has brought about a need for more efficient methods of narrowing down the list to those exoplanets most likely to sustain life. The Atmosphere in a Test Tube project, which began at the University of Padova, Italy, is accomplishing this in a laboratory setting through examination of exoplanet atmospheric responses to photosynthetic bacteria under simulations of the irradiance conditions of a planet’s host star. The goal of this project was to design and construct a second-generation apparatus at Eastern Michigan University. The team focused on an …
The Role Of Caregiver-Reported Emerging Social Attention In Predicting Duration Of Orienting And Social Communication, Casey E. Swick
The Role Of Caregiver-Reported Emerging Social Attention In Predicting Duration Of Orienting And Social Communication, Casey E. Swick
Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations
Early identification of atypical development could lead to opportunities for earlier intervention, ultimately improving developmental outcomes. Early signs of atypical attention, social attention, and social communication development emerge in infancy, yet age at diagnosis of neurodevelopmental difficulties does not typically occur until well after the first year of life. In order to achieve this goal of early identification, sensitive and accessible tools are needed to identify infants at risk for atypical development. This study examined whether caregivers could report on emerging social attention behaviors in the first days to weeks of life with a novel, experimental scale (PediaTrac SSIP). This …
A Sociophonetic Analysis Of Female-Sounding Virtual Assistants, Alyssa Allen
A Sociophonetic Analysis Of Female-Sounding Virtual Assistants, Alyssa Allen
Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations
As conversational machines (e.g., Apple's Siri and Amazon's Alexa) are increasingly anthropomorphized by humans and viewed as active interlocutors, it raises questions about the social information indexed by machine voices. This thesis provides a preliminary exploration of the relationship between human sociophonetics, social expectations, and conversational machine voices. An in-depth literature review (a) explores human relationships with and expectations for real and movie robots, (b) discusses the rise of conversational machines, (c) assesses the history of how female human voices have been perceived, and (d) details social-indexical properties associated with F0, vowel formants (F1 and F2), -ING pronunciation, and /s/ …
Examining The Technology Acceptance Model And Its Influence On Individuals’ Willingness To Accept Commercial Wind Farms, Lester Mark St. Clair
Examining The Technology Acceptance Model And Its Influence On Individuals’ Willingness To Accept Commercial Wind Farms, Lester Mark St. Clair
Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations
This study involved exploration of the acceptance of proposed commercial wind farm construction in rural township areas in the Thumb area of Michigan. The primary objective of the study was to conduct an exploratory analysis to gain an understanding of how residents perceive proposed wind farms in their own communities. This involved examining the influence of perceived usefulness and intent to use on individuals’ acceptance of wind farms in their communities. It also involved exploration of the extent to which personality factors, technophobia, and age moderate these relationships. The study had a cross-sectional research design and relied on a survey …
The Promise And Perils Of Molecular Combing, Jeanmarie Mishler
The Promise And Perils Of Molecular Combing, Jeanmarie Mishler
Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations
Dynamic Molecular Combing (DMC) is a method of making visible single molecules of DNA. The method stretches the molecules, attaching them to a glass coverslip; labels them with an intercalating dye or fluorescent antibodies; and images the molecules with fluorescent microscopy. After combing, fluorescent in situ hybridization (FISH) can be used to inspect regions on the DNA molecule. DMC is especially technically challenging for undergraduate research laboratories. To make the technique accessible to an undergraduate laboratory this project addresses three challenges: pH of buffer solution, NaOH exposure time, and halogenated thymidine exposure time in yeast (Saccharomyces cerevisiae). A serial pH …

Protector And Friend: Turning Points And Discursive Constructions Of The Stepparent Role, Bailey M. Oliver, Dawn O. Braithwaite, Vincent R. Waldron, Robert Hall, Lucas Hackenburg, Braedon G. Worman
Department of Communication Studies: Faculty Publications
Objective: To understand turning points (TPs) in the development of positive stepparent–stepchild communication and relationships.
Background: Scholars stress the importance of communication in co-constructing healthy stepparent–stepchild relationships. The researchers focused on positive stepparenting via understanding transformational turning point (TP) events across time. Research questions explored how stepparents with an overall positive relationship with a stepchild characterize TPs and the discursive constructions of the stepparent role.
Method: The team analyzed 877 pages of data from 37 in-depth interviews with stepparents who described self-identified TP events, reflected in visual graphs of 279 TPs.
Results: Data were coded into 11 TP types, focused …
Variability In Antimicrobial Properties Of Multifloral Honey In Southwestern Virginia, Isabella Jessee
Variability In Antimicrobial Properties Of Multifloral Honey In Southwestern Virginia, Isabella Jessee
Undergraduate Honors Theses
The antimicrobial properties of multifloral honey have been utilized for centuries in wound healing, as well as for infection treatment and prevention. The chemical properties from the nectar source, enzymes produced by the bee, as well as the digestive activity of the microorganisms in the bee gut all contribute to the antimicrobial activity of honey. Honeybee (Apis mellifera, the western or European Honeybee) farms in four locations across southwestern Virginia (Fincastle, Covington, Troutville, and Martinsville) were visited in the fall of 2021 to collect honey (fall and spring), worker bees, and pollen pellets. Disk diffusion assays were used …
Management Of The Brown Marmorated Stink Bug (Halyomorpha Halys) (Hemiptera:Pentatomidae) On Small Acreage And Organic Vegetable Systems, Lauren Fann
Theses and Dissertations--Entomology
Invasive species can be very disruptive to established integrated pest management programs. They can cause increases in broad-spectrum insecticide applications with variable effectiveness to mitigate damage. However, not all introduced species develop invasive characteristics; often, many introduced species go undetected. It is not until a species begins to cause economic damage to commodities essential to humans that it becomes classified as an invasive pest. Many challenges arise with the management of invasive pests due to lack of understanding of their biology, behavior, and absence of natural enemies in their introduced range. This often results in poor management and population outbreaks …
