Direct Ink Writing Of Flexible Piezoelectric Sensors, Amanda M. White
Direct Ink Writing Of Flexible Piezoelectric Sensors, Amanda M. White
Boise State University Theses and Dissertations
Piezoelectric poly(vinylidene fluoride-co-trifluoroethylene), or PVDF-trFE, builds up significant electrical charges on its surface when stressed. By correlating the mechanical force with the resulting electrical charges or voltages, researchers have developed flexible, broadband, and biocompatible force sensors. PVDF-trFE force sensors are traditionally fabricated via spin coating or solvent casting, which result in large waste production and experience difficulties in forming complex geometries. To tackle these challenges, I leveraged a commercial direct ink writing system (nScrypt microdispenser) to additively manufacture PVDF-trFE force sensors. I first synthesized an unprecedented piezoelectric ink that is compatible with a commercial ink writing system at Boise State …

Xenotransplantation: Using Animals To Save Human Lives, Casey Restau
Xenotransplantation: Using Animals To Save Human Lives, Casey Restau
Honors Projects
The United States currently faces an extreme shortage of organs available for those in need of life-saving transplants. Xenotransplantation, using tissues or organs from non-human animal sources, could provide a solution to this daunting problem. The science behind xenotransplantation has been studied for several decades, however, there is yet to be a truly successful case of xenotransplantation. Major breakthroughs in this experimental treatment have been made within the past couple of years, but progress is slow. Many ethical and moral issues surrounding xenotransplantation have attributed to its controversial nature that could prevent the treatment from becoming reality.
Cell Division Dynamics Of Escherichia Coli In Extreme Environments, Steven P. Murray
Cell Division Dynamics Of Escherichia Coli In Extreme Environments, Steven P. Murray
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Life is remarkable in how resilient it can be. Many organism, classified as ex- tremophiles, can not only survive in extreme environments, but they can thrive in them. In the search for extraterrestrial life, the best candidates to harbor life exist with some kind of extreme condition. Europa, for example, is a favorite for the possibility of accommodating life as we know it within our solar system. Thought there is believed to be a liquid ocean under its icy surface, this habitat would be under immense pressures and high salinity. To best know where to look for extraterrestrial life, it …

Short-Term Changes Within An Agroforestry System Managed At Three Basal Areas With Fescue Compared To Orchardgrass, Matthew Janorschke
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Silvopasture practices incorporate forages and woody perennials in the same system in order to create a sustainable system. The main objective of this study was to determine if one of two forage species can be successfully established in order to investigate agroforestry as a management system to promote soil health. Within a bottomland mixed hardwood forest in the Arkansas River Valley, an agroforestry system was established to evaluate three basal areas (determined as the cross-sectional area of trees at breast height) (7, 11.5, and 16 m2/ha) with mounded areas and two forages, tall fescue (Lolium arundinaceum [Schreb.] Darbysh) and orchardgrass …
Seasonal Patterns In Activity And Occupancy Dynamics Of The Imperiled Spotted Turtle (Clemmys Guttata), Ellery Vaughn Lassiter
Seasonal Patterns In Activity And Occupancy Dynamics Of The Imperiled Spotted Turtle (Clemmys Guttata), Ellery Vaughn Lassiter
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Wetland ecosystems are often spatially patchy across a landscape and exhibit seasonal patterns in water levels, resulting in the need for aquatic wildlife to use several different wetland patches across a season. The ecology of semi-aquatic freshwater turtles is especially complex because individuals often move among a variety of habitats to meet life history needs and these habitat requirements often differ across a season. Understanding the temporal and spatial scale in which turtles move and distribute across the landscape is vital for effective management, especially in the face of continued habitat fragmentation and climate change. Thus, we sought to understand …
Ultrasound Mediated Tissue Growth In Bioinspired Scaffolds, Marco Fielder
Ultrasound Mediated Tissue Growth In Bioinspired Scaffolds, Marco Fielder
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Porous scaffolds mechanically stimulated with ultrasound are used for the treatment of bone conditions such as osteoporosis or traumatic bone injury. However, one current issue in these treatment techniques is designing a scaffold structure with a high structural integrity that also does not impede tissue growth. A larger ultrasound wave transmission would also allow more of a scaffold to receive mechanical stimulation from ultrasound. Controlling mesenchymal stem cell seeding of tissue scaffolds also has potential for developing optimal seeding patterns to maximize or control tissue growth in the scaffold based on an individual’s physiology. There is also a need for …
Hierarchical Structure And Material Integration For Electrocatalytic Co2 Reduction, Hamed Mehrabi
Hierarchical Structure And Material Integration For Electrocatalytic Co2 Reduction, Hamed Mehrabi
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
CO2 released by the combustion of fossil fuels is driving significant changes to the earth’sclimate. The natural cycle for removing CO2 from the atmosphere, namely photosynthesis, cannot keep up with the rate at which it is being added. Developing engineering approaches to remove CO2 from the atmosphere is becoming essential to reduce these effects. Removal leads to further issues of carbon sequestration and favorable CO2 reuse strategies, including the electrochemical transformation of recovered CO2 to useful products such as fuels and materials. Copper is an important electrocatalyst for the CO2 reduction reaction (CO2RR) because of its unique capability for producing …
Optimization Of Clostridium Septicum Antigen Production And Evaluation Of Vaccine Administration Parameters For A Candidate Bacterin-Toxoid To Prevent Dermatitis In Commercial Turkeys, Aaron Forga

The objective of this thesis was to optimize the hemolytic activity of two isolates of Clostridium septicum to evaluate if hemolytic titer of C. septicum antigen at time of formalin inactivation corresponded to increased serum antibody titer to the C. septicum alpha-toxin of turkeys immunized with an experimental formalin inactivated bacterin-toxoid vaccine. Chapter 1 provides a brief overview of the thesis. Chapter 2 consists of a literature review focused on clostridial dermatitis, specifically C. septicum-associated dermatitis (cellulitis) that affects commercial turkeys. Chapter 3 outlines our attempts to optimize an experimental autogenous bacterin-toxoid vaccine as a potential strategy to mitigate clostridial …
Nitrogen Management In Rice Under Suboptimal Soil Conditions, Payton Suzanne Rhea
Nitrogen Management In Rice Under Suboptimal Soil Conditions, Payton Suzanne Rhea
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
In Mid-South rice (Oryza sativa, L.) production, nitrogen (N) fertilizer management for pureline varieties is most often recommended as a single preflood (SPF) or two-way split (2WS) application in a direct-seeded, delayed-flood system. Most of the N fertilizer is typically applied at the four- to six-leaf stage onto dry soil, and the second application, if necessary, into the floodwater during early reproductive growth stages (referred to as midseason). Environmental factors frequently prohibit growers from applying early N fertilizer under optimal dry soil conditions. A study was conducted to determine the best N fertilization management practices to utilize in rice when …

Efficient Hierarchical Space-Time Models For Large Areal Datasets With Application To Forest Inventory Mapping Using Remote Sensing Imagery, Md Kamrul Hasan Khan
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The focus of this dissertation is development of a novel hierarchical framework, that can be used for predictive modeling of Forest Inventory and Analysis (FIA) data over large regions. This dissertation has two significant contributions. Based on a study region in north-central Wisconsin, we analyze satellite imagery, along with a sample of national forest inventory field plots, to monitor and predict changes in forest conditions over time. The auxiliary data from the satellite imagery of this region are relatively dense in space and time, and can be used to learn how forest conditions changed over that decade. However, these records …

Diagnosing Excess Nitrogen In Rice Using Post-Season Tissue Samples, Kyle Hoegenauer
Diagnosing Excess Nitrogen In Rice Using Post-Season Tissue Samples, Kyle Hoegenauer
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Proper nitrogen (N) management in rice production can be difficult to achieve without the aid of tools such as soil and tissue tests. There are no tests currently available to rice producers that determine whether N has been managed properly throughout the season or that detect instances of over fertilization. Rice stalk samples were collected from N response trials within 3 days of harvest from the primary Arkansas rice growing region in 2016-2018. Stalk samples were analyzed for N concentration through a KCl extraction and spectrofluorometric quantification. Samples analyzed with leaf material intact contained statistically different N concentrations than samples …

How Faculty Perceive Their Role In Student Learning Assessment And Program Improvement, Mary Elizabeth Spence
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Student success is inextricably linked with the assessment of student learning, and the literature cites the need for faculty engagement in the assessment process. However, many issues related to the assessment process may be considered demotivators by faculty. The purpose of this study is to examine whether faculty motivation to participate in student assessment was influenced by the accreditation status of the faculty member’s academic field. Data collection for this qualitative case study included individual interviews with participants and a review of documents related to the assessment process.

The analysis showed that the Atlantic surfclam median asymptotic length in …
Statistical Methods For Meta-Analysis In Large-Scale Genomic Experiments, Wimarsha Thathsarani Jayanetti
Statistical Methods For Meta-Analysis In Large-Scale Genomic Experiments, Wimarsha Thathsarani Jayanetti
Mathematics & Statistics Theses & Dissertations
Recent developments in high throughput genomic assays have opened up the possibility of testing hundreds and thousands of genes simultaneously. With the availability of vast amounts of public databases, researchers tend to combine genomic analysis results from multiple studies in the form of a meta-analysis. Meta-analysis methods can be broadly classified into two main categories. The first approach is to combine the statistical significance (pvalues) of the genes from each individual study, and the second approach is to combine the statistical estimates (effect sizes) from the individual studies. In this dissertation, we will discuss how adherence to the standard null …

Counseling & Human Services Theses & Dissertations
This dissertation focused on the diagnostic self-efficacy of mental health counselors. The diagnosis of mental health disorders serves a wide array of functions in the counseling field including communication, treatment planning, and third-party reimbursement. Self-efficacy, or one’s belief in their own ability to accomplish a task, is considered a factor in successful task completion. The literature lacked information about which mental health disorders counselors are most confident diagnosing and an instrument which measured the self-efficacy of counselors specific to the diagnostic process. The MEASURE approach was employed to create the Diagnostic Self-Efficacy Scale and validate scores on this instrument with …
A Systems Theory-Based Framework For Environmental Scanning In Complex System Governance, Dale E. Baugh
A Systems Theory-Based Framework For Environmental Scanning In Complex System Governance, Dale E. Baugh
Engineering Management & Systems Engineering Theses & Dissertations
The purpose of this research was to develop a Systems Theory-based framework for Environmental Scanning (ES) in Complex System Governance (CSG) using an inductive research design. Complexity and uncertainty are normal for external environments in which today’s systems (organizations) exist. These environmental characteristics provide impetus for researchers to focus on organizational planning for disruptive external forces that could threaten system stability and future system existence. The ES function supports the requisite governance metasystemic functions to be enabled, executed, and evolved sufficiently well to promote continuous system viability. In this research the functioning of ES was examined from a diverse literature-based …
Numerical Simulation Of Electroosmotic Flow Of Viscoelastic Fluid In Microchannel, Jianyu Ji
Numerical Simulation Of Electroosmotic Flow Of Viscoelastic Fluid In Microchannel, Jianyu Ji
Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Theses & Dissertations
Electroosmotic flow (EOF) has been widely used in various biochemical microfluidic applications, many of which often involve the use of viscoelastic non-Newtonian fluids. Due to the existence of the elastic effect, the viscoelastic EOF develops into chaotic flow under extremely low Reynolds numbers, which is known as elastic turbulence. The mechanism of elastic turbulence in electroosmotic flow remains unclear. Numerical simulation plays an important role in understanding the mechanisms of elastic turbulence. This dissertation is aimed to study the EOF of viscoelastic fluids in constriction microchannels under various direct current (DC) and alternating current (AC) electric fields. First, the EOF …

Assembly Of Ceramic Particles In Aqueous Suspensions Induced By High-Frequency Ac Electric Field, James E. John Iv
Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Theses & Dissertations
Ceramic materials processed using colloidal methods have been the focus of a great deal of research aimed at tailoring the final structure and microstructure of the finished ceramic sample. To this end, various external field effects have been investigated to modify the suspension microstructure without manipulating the ceramic particles directly. In a previous work in the field of ice templating it has been shown that AC electric fields are able to produce microstructural changes in ice templated ceramics that have significantly improved the final mechanical properties. However, the mechanisms for this process are still not well understood in ceramics.

Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is the most common primary hepatic neoplasm. Thanks to recent advances in computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), there is potential to improve detection, segmentation, discrimination from HCC mimics, and monitoring of therapeutic response. Radiomics, artificial intelligence (AI), and derived tools have already been applied in other areas of diagnostic imaging with promising results. In this review, we briefly discuss the current clinical applications of radiomics and AI in the detection, segmentation, and management of HCC. Moreover, we investigate their potential to reach a more accurate diagnosis of HCC and to guide proper treatment planning.
Tyre Particle Exposure Affects The Health Of Two Key Estuarine Invertebrates, S. L. Garrard, J. I. Spicer, R. C. Thompson
Tyre Particle Exposure Affects The Health Of Two Key Estuarine Invertebrates, S. L. Garrard, J. I. Spicer, R. C. Thompson
School of Biological and Marine Sciences
Tyre wear particles may be the largest source of microplastic to the natural environment, yet information on their biological impacts is inadequate. Two key estuarine invertebrates; the clam Scrobicularia plana and the ragworm Hediste diversicolor were exposed to 10% tyre particles in sediment for three days. Both species consumed the particles, although S. plana consumed 25x more than H. diversicolor (967 compared with 35 particles.g−1 wet weight, respectively). We then investigated the impact of 21 days exposure to different concentrations of tyre particles in estuarine sediments (0.2, 1, and 5% dry weight sediment) on aspects of the health of S. …

Detection And Characterisation Of Microplastics And Microfibres In Fishmeal And Soybean Meal, Christopher Walkinshaw, Trevor J. Tolhurst, Penelope K. Lindeque, Richard Thompson, Matthew Cole
School of Biological and Marine Sciences
Aquaculture is an increasingly important source of nutrition for global food security, which is reliant on animal- and plant-based feeds. Anthropogenic particles, including microplastics and semi-synthetic cellulosic fibres, are prolific marine pollutants that are readily consumed by marine organisms, including small pelagic fish commonly used in fishmeal. Conversely, there is no indication plants can accumulate anthropogenic microparticles. We explore whether aquaculture feed presents a route of contamination for farmed fish. Commercially-sourced aquaculture feedstocks, including fishmeals and soybean meal, were processed (KOH digestion and ZnCl2 density separation) and anthropogenic particles characterised using microscopy and spectroscopic methods. Both fishmeal and soybean meals …

Disruption Of Marine Habitats By Artificial Light At Night From Global Coastal Megacities, T. W. Davies, T. J. Smyth, A. E. Wright, A. Edwards-Jones, A Queiros, O. Rendon, S. Tidau, D. Mckee
School of Biological and Marine Sciences
Half of globally significant megacities are situated near the coast, exposing urban marine ecosystems to multiple stressors such as waste-water discharge containing a host of organic and inorganic pollutants, air and noise pollution. In addition to these well recognized sources, artificial light at night (ALAN) pollution is inseparable from cities but poorly quantified in marine ecosystems to date. We have developed a time- and wavelength-resolving hydrological optical model that includes solar (daylight and twilight components), lunar and ALAN source terms and propagates these spectrally through a tidally varying water column using Beer’s Law. Our model shows that for 8 globally …

Insecticide Susceptibility And Resistance Detection In Phlebotomus Argentipes Sandflies (Diptera: Psychodidae: Phlebotominae), Shawna M. Hennings
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Leishmaniasis is an understudied disease found predominantly in high heat and humidity areas. The disease is transmitted by sandflies which are blood-feeding, biting insects. There is currently no known vaccine for any form of leishmaniasis and treatment imposes a significant economic impact on already poor and marginalized populations, as well as severe, lingering side effects for afflicted individuals. Annually, there are millions of people around the world afflicted with a form of Leishmaniasis that is transmitted by species of sandflies. The primary sandfly population control method for over half a century has been indoor residual spraying using insecticides. The selective …

Immunological Tradeoffs And The Impacts Of Urbanization On The Reproductive Ecology And Physiology Of The Side-Blotched Lizard (Uta Stansburiana), Emily E. Virgin
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Investing resources into reproduction can limit energy available to other competing demands, such as fighting off an infection; yet, both processes are necessary for organisms to survive and pass on their genes to the next generation. These strategies often follow patterns associated with lifespan, such that shorter-lived animals are more likely to invest more resources into reproduction over survival, and vice versa in long-lived animals. However, environmental change caused by urbanization can disrupt these relationships, and the within- and transgenerational costs of urbanization on females and offspring are unknown. I address these uncertainties in three research chapters to better understand …

Approaches To Supplementing Silicon In Soilless Media And The Value Of Silicon In The Mitigation Of Drought Stress, Mackenzie Grace Dey
Approaches To Supplementing Silicon In Soilless Media And The Value Of Silicon In The Mitigation Of Drought Stress, Mackenzie Grace Dey
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Silicon (Si) is not considered an essential element for plants to complete their lifecycle, but is known to be beneficial for plants under environmental stress such as drought. Unlike natural soils, Si is minimally bioavailable in soilless media. With indoor agriculture and greenhouse production increasing, the benefits of Si have been seen and Si should be supplemented. This work aimed to characterize and quantify the dissolution of Si from media substrates and additives to achieve a steady-state release of Si in soilless media. Typical media components such as coconut coir, peat moss, perlite, rock wool, sand, and vermiculite minimally released …
