Phenanthroline-Catalyzed 1,2-Cis Glycosylation: Scope And Mechanism, Jiayi Li Jan 2022

Phenanthroline-Catalyzed 1,2-Cis Glycosylation: Scope And Mechanism, Jiayi Li

Wayne State University Dissertations

Phenanthroline, a rigid and planar organic compound with two fused pyridine rings, has been used as a powerful ligand for metals and a binding agent for DNA/RNA. We recently discovered that phenanthroline could be used as a nucleophilic catalyst to access high yielding and diastereoselective α-1,2-cis glycosides through the coupling of hydroxyl acceptors with α-glycosyl bromide donors. The utility of the phenanthroline catalysis is expanded to sterically hindered hydroxyl nucleophiles and chemoselective coupling of an alkyl hydroxyl group in the presence of a free C1-hemiacetal functionality. In addition, the phenanthroline-based catalyst has a pronounced effect on site-selective couplings of triol …

Finding Optimal Cayley Map Embeddings Using Genetic Algorithms, Jacob Buckelew Jan 2022

Finding Optimal Cayley Map Embeddings Using Genetic Algorithms, Jacob Buckelew

Honors Program Theses

Genetic algorithms are a commonly used metaheuristic search method aimed at solving complex optimization problems in a variety of fields. These types of algorithms lend themselves to problems that can incorporate stochastic elements, which allows for a wider search across a search space. However, the nature of the genetic algorithm can often cause challenges regarding time-consumption. Although the genetic algorithm may be widely applicable to various domains, it is not guaranteed that the algorithm will outperform other traditional search methods in solving problems specific to particular domains. In this paper, we test the feasibility of genetic algorithms in solving a …

One Cell’S Trash Is Another Cell’S Treasure: The Role Of Exosomes In Stress Physiology Of The Brown Anole (Anolis Sagrei), Anna Kaza Jan 2022

One Cell’S Trash Is Another Cell’S Treasure: The Role Of Exosomes In Stress Physiology Of The Brown Anole (Anolis Sagrei), Anna Kaza

Honors Program Theses

Exosomes are a type of extracellular vesicle that is produced by cells through an endosomal pathway and secreted into bodily fluids. Exosomes deliver bioactive cargo from their parent cells to target cells as a form of intercellular communication. While most research has studied exosomes in the context of disease, less is known about their role in normal physiology when disease is absent. Using the brown anole (Anolis sagrei) as a model organism, we investigated how stress exposure affects exosome concentrations in the plasma of anoles, and whether exosome release is necessary for the response to stress. We hypothesized that stress …

The Influence Of Human Facial Obstruction On Canine (Canis Familiaris) Begging Preferences, Natalie George

Honors Program Theses

Research on the ability of dogs (Canis familiaris) to recognize human attentional states has shown that dogs are inconsistent in successfully begging to humans who can see them. The current study expanded on this research in relation to the ongoing pandemic and analyzed whether dogs preferred begging to masked, unmasked, or blindfolded individuals. We recruited dog owners from a small liberal arts college and the surrounding area. Dogs chose to beg for a treat from a researcher in one of three separate testing conditions: no facial occlusion versus blindfolded, masked versus blindfolded, or no facial occlusion versus masked. The study …

As we engage in Open STEM Education, “Open for Whom?” becomes an increasingly urgent question. Why should we invest in an education that is free, if it does not attend to the inclusion of historically marginalized identities? Inclusive and socially-just science education should be part of the framework for investing in tomorrow’s science. The RIOS Institute (for Racially-Just, Inclusive, Open, STEM education) is a collaborative virtual organization that provides resources for STEM education and organization leaders to implement social justice, equity, diversity, and inclusion (SJEDI)-centered Open Education and Open Science pedagogy, materials, and resources. We work with, and provide support …

Can Physics Attain Its Goals: Extending D'Agostino's Analysis To 21st Century And Beyond, Olga Kosheleva, Vladik Kreinovich

Departmental Technical Reports (CS)

In his 2000 seminal book, Silvo D'Agostino provided the detailed overview of the history of ideas underlying 19th and 20th century physics. Now that we are two decades into the 21st century, a natural question is: how can we extend his analysis to the 21st century physics -- and, if possible, beyond, to try to predict how physics will change? To perform this analysis, we go beyond an analysis of what happened and focus more on why para-digm changes happened in the history of physics. To better understand these paradigm changes, we analyze now only what were the main ideas …

Mri Guided Breast Biopsy, Rachel Roccograndi Jan 2022

Mri Guided Breast Biopsy, Rachel Roccograndi

Medical Imaging Senior Posters

Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is a non-invasive technique that produces computer-generated cross-sectional images. The images produced contain anatomic and physiologic information. Using non-ionizing radiation, MRI creates images through the interaction of magnetic fields and radio frequency energy on biologic tissue. The specificity present in the images produced is the main reason MRI is a popular choice of diagnostic testing. MRI is used to evaluate organs, tissues, and skeletal systems and different sequences are used depending on what the main focus of the test is. MRI images are more complex because they contain information about different properties of tissue-proton density, relaxation …

Contextualizing Artificial Intelligence: The History, Values, And Epistemology Of Technology In The Philosophy Of Science, Christopher Grimsley Jan 2022

Contextualizing Artificial Intelligence: The History, Values, And Epistemology Of Technology In The Philosophy Of Science, Christopher Grimsley

Theses and Dissertations--Philosophy

Artificial intelligence (AI) and other advanced technologies pose new questions for philosophers of science regarding epistemology, science and values, and the history of science. I will address these issues across three essays in this dissertation. The first essay concerns epistemic problems that emerge with existing accounts of scientific explanation when they are applied to deep neural networks (DNNs). Causal explanations in particular, which appear at first to be well suited to the task of explaining DNNs, fail to provide any such explanation. The second essay will explore bias in systems of automated decision-making, and the role of various conceptions of …

Arginine Catabolism And Polyamine Biosynthesis Pathway Disparities Within Francisella Tularensis Subpopulations, Yinshi Yue, Bhanwar Lal Puniya, Tomáš Helikar, Benjamin Girardo, Steven H. Hinrichs, Marilyn A. Larson

Department of Biochemistry: Faculty Publications

Francisella tularensis is a highly infectious zoonotic pathogen with as few as 10 organisms causing tularemia, a disease that is fatal if untreated. Although F. tularensis subspecies tularensis (type A) and subspecies holarctica (type B) share over 99.5% average nucleotide identity, notable differences exist in genomic organization and pathogenicity. The type A clade has been further divided into subtypes A.I and A.II, with A.I strains being recognized as some of the most virulent bacterial pathogens known. In this study, we report on major disparities that exist between the F. tularensis subpopulations in arginine catabolism and subsequent polyamine biosynthesis. The genes …

Species-Specific Responses To Landscape Features Shaped Genomic Structure Within Alaska Galliformes, Sarah A. Sonsthagen, Robert E. Wilson, Sandra L. Talbot

Nebraska Cooperative Fish and Wildlife Research Unit: Staff Publications

Aim: Connectivity is vital to the resiliency of populations to environmental change and stochastic events, especially for cold-adapted species as Arctic and alpine tundra habitats retract as the climate warms. We examined the influence of past and current landscapes on genomic connectivity in cold-adapted galliformes as a critical first step to assess the vulnerability of Alaska ptarmigan and grouse to environmental change. We hypothesize that the mosaic of physical features and habitat within Alaska promoted the formation of genetic structure across species.

Location: Alaska, United States of America.

Taxa: Ptarmigan and Grouse (Galliformes: Tetraoninae).

Methods: We collected double digest restriction-site- …

Immature Bull Shark Habitat Use And Residency In The Manatee River, A Non-Thermally Altered Nursery Area, Cecilia Hampton Jan 2022

Immature Bull Shark Habitat Use And Residency In The Manatee River, A Non-Thermally Altered Nursery Area, Cecilia Hampton

Theses & ETDs

The Manatee River is a non-thermally altered estuarine river that flows into the southern edge of Tampa Bay. Prior studies suggest that temperature and salinity are the primary factors driving juvenile bull shark habitat use. However, previously-studied nurseries at latitudes similar to the Manatee River have been in thermally-altered rivers. The objective was to examine immature bull shark use of this habitat in relation to variation in temperature and salinity. A network of acoustic receivers was deployed within the Manatee River to track movements of acoustically-tagged juvenile bull sharks (n=20). Incorporating data from New College’s temperature/salinity loggers and from USGS …

Targeting Egfr-Mutant Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer Cells With Carm1 Inhibitors, Anastasia Gregory Jan 2022

Targeting Egfr-Mutant Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer Cells With Carm1 Inhibitors, Anastasia Gregory

Theses & ETDs

Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer related deaths, and non-small cell lung cancers (NSCLC) make up the majority of cases. EGFR-mutant NSCLC patients have been found to develop resistance to chemotherapeutic agents such as third generation tyrosine kinase inhibitor, osimertinib, over time. This study aimed to determine the effects of CARM1 inhibitors on EGFR-mutant NSCLC cell lines and to assess if a CARM1 inhibitor (CARM1i) shows cooperativity with osimertinib to reduce viability of EGFR-mutant NSCLC cell lines. This study involved a colorimetric thiazolyl blue tetrazolium bromide (MTT) assay to determine cell viability for a series of single and …
