Survey Of Diatom Periphyton Assemblages In Lake George, Joy Jackson
Survey Of Diatom Periphyton Assemblages In Lake George, Joy Jackson
Masters Theses
Lake George is an oligotrophic lake that has been monitored by the International Biological Monitoring Program (IBM) since the 1960s. The 51 km long lake is separated into two deep basins, one in the south where the major stream inputs are located, and one in the north where the lake feeds the La Chute River, which empties into Lake Champlain. The two basins are separated by a shallow channel named the “Narrows.” The southern basin has experienced a higher level of development than the northern basin. The aim of this study is to characterize the diatom assemblages in the northern …

The Body As The Temple Of God, Lareina Hingson
The Body As The Temple Of God, Lareina Hingson
Interpreter: A Journal of Latter-day Saint Faith and Scholarship
Metaphors occur when there is a contradiction in the senses of the words used that cause the text to be interpreted non-literally, as Paul Ricoeur has noted. The Apostle Paul’s letter to the Corinthians describing the body as a temple has been taken to be one such scriptural metaphor: “Know ye not that ye are the temple of God, and that the Spirit of God dwelleth in you? … know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost which is in you?” (1 Corinthians 3:16; 6:19). As a metaphor, it is a strong one. The supposed …

The Real Cause Of The Broken Rib: Developments In Pediatricians' Approach To Child Abuse; 1960 - 2020, Sofia Charania
Yale Medicine Thesis Digital Library
In 1962, C. Henry Kempe published his landmark work, The Battered Child Syndrome, and set into motion a new discourse on child abuse within the American pediatrics community. This paper discusses the tension pediatricians felt between longstanding assumptions of parental virtue and the implications of the emerging conversation on child abuse started by Kempe. It also discusses the resistance shown by some pediatricians to accepting the reality of abuse and the slow process by which that resistance was overcome, aided by factors such as pediatricians’ involvement in adoption procedures. As pediatricians began confronting and understanding child abuse more deeply, their …
Atypical Presentation Of Hereditary Hypophosphatemic Rickets With Hypercalciuria Due To Digenic Mutations, Bryan Bo-Ran Ho
Atypical Presentation Of Hereditary Hypophosphatemic Rickets With Hypercalciuria Due To Digenic Mutations, Bryan Bo-Ran Ho
Yale Medicine Thesis Digital Library
Loss-of-function (LOF) mutations in SLC34A3 cause renal phosphate wasting due to loss of sodium phosphate co-transporter NPT2c, generally presenting in childhood with hereditary hypophosphatemic rickets with hypercalciuria (HHRH). Described here are two individuals with atypical presentations of HHRH due to additional heterozygous mutations in SLC34A1 and NPHP4, genetic causes of idiopathic infantile hypercalcemia type 2 and nephronophthisis, respectively. The first case has a 10-year history of well-controlled ulcerative colitis and atrial fibrillation. He wore braces briefly at age 5 for lower extremity bowing, which resolved spontaneously. He was without fractures until age 41, when he sustained a tibial plateau fracture …
Treating Children With Physical Disabilities: Development Of A Video-Based Education Resource Using Simulated Participants, Alexandra Kimmel
Treating Children With Physical Disabilities: Development Of A Video-Based Education Resource Using Simulated Participants, Alexandra Kimmel
Yale Medicine Thesis Digital Library
Introduction: Children with physical disabilities (CWPD) represent an important population that has historically experienced inadequate and insensitive care across medical settings. A lack of comfort and knowledge about CWPD is common among health professionals and trainees. We created and evaluated a new educational resource enhanced by videotaped clips of a model pediatric outpatient visit for a CWPD and his mother, both portrayed by simulated participants. Methods: We created a curriculum working group composed of multiple stakeholders, including patients with disabilities, parents of children with disabilities, and physician experts in treating disabilities. Using recommendations from the curriculum working group, we developed a …

Cell communication via exosomes is capable of influencing cell fate in stress situations such as exposure to ionizing radiation. In vitro and in vivo studies have shown that exosomes might play a role in out-of-target radiation effects by carrying molecular signaling mediators of radiation damage, as well as opposite protective functions resulting in resistance to radiotherapy. However, a global understanding of exosomes and their radiation-induced regulation, especially within the context of an intact mammalian organism, has been lacking. In this in vivo study, we demonstrate that, compared to sham-irradiated (SI) mice, a distinct pattern of proteins and miRNAs is found …

Age—Not Sex Or Gender—Makes The Case Of Ellie Anderson Complex, Elizabeth Lanphier, Shannon Fyfe
Age—Not Sex Or Gender—Makes The Case Of Ellie Anderson Complex, Elizabeth Lanphier, Shannon Fyfe
Scholarly Articles
In ’The Complex Case of Ellie Anderson’, Joona Rasanen and Anna Smajdor raise several ethical questions about the case. One question asks, but does not answer, whether Ellie faced discrimination for being transgender when her mother was not allowed access to Ellie’s sperm following her death. In raising the question, the authors imply anti-trans bias may have influenced this determination. However, this inference is not supported by current ethical and legal guidance for posthumous use of gametes, with which Ellie’s case is consistent. We consider the authors’ responses to their other ethical queries, and how their suggestions for what options …

Sex Differences In The Association Of Sibship Size And Position In Sibship With Lipid Profile During Adolescence: A Cross-Sectional Study, Ali H. Ziyab, Mohammad Almari, Anwar Mohammad, Abdullah Al-Taiar, Wilfried Karmaus
Community & Environmental Health Faculty Publications
Background. Epidemiologic studies have reported associations of sibship size and position of the child in the sibship with multiple health outcomes, including adiposity and diabetes. However, little is known about sibling effects on lipids. Hence, this study sought to evaluate associations of the number of total, older, and younger siblings with lipid profile among adolescents. Methods. In a cross-sectional study among high school students aged 14 to 19 years, lipid levels were measured in capillary blood. Parents reported the number of siblings (total, older, and younger). Geometric means of lipids were calculated, and linear regression was used to estimate the …

Protein Modeling Reports
Alzheimer’s Disease (AD), affecting approximately 24 million people worldwide, is characterized by the formation of amyloid-β plaques within the brain. Alzheimer’s research has been focused on limiting amyloid-β production through developing inhibitors for the enzymes needed within the amyloid cascade. This project focuses on the aminoquinoline class of inhibitors, of which 68K (PDB: 5i3Y) is the most effective because of its strong Kd and IC50 values. The students of the Honors Protein Modeling class at Nova Southeastern University modeled the interaction between Beta-site Amyloid Precursor Protein Cleaving Enzyme 1 (BACE-1) and 68K. Using Jmol a model was developed, and 3D …

Translocation Of Timber Rattlesnakes At Two West Virginia State Forests, Elizabeth Morgan Johnson
Translocation Of Timber Rattlesnakes At Two West Virginia State Forests, Elizabeth Morgan Johnson
Theses, Dissertations and Capstones
In wildlife management, translocation is defined as the purposeful movement of an individual(s) from one place to another with a wildlife management goal. Translocation has become a common tool for mitigating negative human-wildlife interactions. We conducted a translocation study on timber rattlesnakes (Crotalus horridus) in response to numerous human-rattlesnake encounters with the goal of developing a translocation protocol that would allow natural resources personnel to mitigate negative encounters between the public and rattlesnakes and reduce impacts to local timber rattlesnake populations. In this study, we scaled translocation distance to site-specific home range characteristics to assess whether translocation outcomes …

Trauma As Inclusion, Raquel Aldana, Patrick M. Koga, Thomas O'Donnell, Alea Skwara, Caroline Perris
Tennessee Law Review
This article brings together a historian and law, public health, psychiatry, psychology, and neuroscience faculty and researchers to document how trauma is understood across disciplines and how it has developed in U.S. immigration law largely to exclude but increasingly to include migrants whose lives have been uprooted or otherwise impacted by borders. Our aim is to document and assess the progress and the gaps in immigration law's embrace and understanding of trauma through metrics that include the science of trauma, compassion, and fairness. This analysis is made urgent by the travesty we are witnessing of borders completely shut to desperate …
Antioxidant Biomarkers And Nutraceutical Therapeutics In Neurodegeneration And Neurotrauma, Lilia A. Koza
Antioxidant Biomarkers And Nutraceutical Therapeutics In Neurodegeneration And Neurotrauma, Lilia A. Koza
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI), yielding a Glascow Coma Scale of 13-15, is the most commonly occurring severity of TBI. Pathology from mTBI consists of blood brain barrier disruption, neuroinflammation, oxidative stress, excitotoxicity, mitochondrial dysfunction, protein aggregation, axonal degeneration, and resulting neuronal death. These processes deplete the body’s endogenous antioxidant system. We report a retrospective analysis of antioxidant blood biomarkers in patients with a history of mTBI from a local sports medicine clinic, Resilience Code. We found persistent sex-specific antioxidant depletions in mTBI patients associated with worsened symptomology.
Certain populations, such as athletes, are at high risk for repetitive mTBI …
Morphological Variation And Community Science In Orthoptera, Amy Byerly
Morphological Variation And Community Science In Orthoptera, Amy Byerly
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Patterns of morphological divergence across species’ ranges provide insight into local adaptation and speciation. Here, we compare phenotypic divergence among 4,221 crickets from 337 populations of two related species of field cricket, Gryllus firmus and G. pennsylvanicus and their hybrids. We find that these species differ across their geographic range in key morphological traits, such as body size and ovipositor length, and we directly compare phenotype with genotype for a subset of crickets demonstrating nuclear genetic introgression, phenotypic intermediacy of hybrids, and essentially unidirectional mitochondrial introgression. We discuss how these morphological traits relate to life history differences between the species. …

Interrupting Holistic Processing May Improve The Detection Of Deceptive Emotional Facial Expressions, Christopher A. Gunderson
Interrupting Holistic Processing May Improve The Detection Of Deceptive Emotional Facial Expressions, Christopher A. Gunderson
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Although a growing body of evidence suggests that genuine and deceptive facial expressions differ, previous work is mixed as to whether observers can discern between them. One explanation is that cues to deception on the face are subtle and not readily perceived by observers. I argue that the way people process faces may obscure these cues, making them ‘unseen’ by observers. In the current work, I pit two hypotheses against each other to test whether interrupting holistic processing improves or impairs the ability to identify deceptive emotional expressions. Since people process faces holistically, one region of the face may interfere …
Organellar Zn2+ Homeostasis And The Role Of Trpml Channels In Neuronal Lysosome Physiology And Axonal Transport, Taylor Franklin Minckley
Organellar Zn2+ Homeostasis And The Role Of Trpml Channels In Neuronal Lysosome Physiology And Axonal Transport, Taylor Franklin Minckley
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Zinc (Zn2+) is crucial for proper cellular function, and as such it is important to measure and track Zn2+ dynamics in living cells. Fluorescent sensors have been used to estimate Zn2+ content of subcellular compartments, but little is known about endolysosomal Zn2+ homeostasis. Similarly, although numerous sensors have been reported, it is unclear whether and how Zn2+ can be released from intracellular compartments into the cytosol due to a lack of probes that can detect physiological dynamics of cytosolic Zn2+. My dissertation started with comparing and characterizing different Zn2+ sensors including the …
