Gender Equality Redux, Ratna Kapur, Brenda Cossman Jan 2022

Gender Equality Redux, Ratna Kapur, Brenda Cossman

National Law School Journal

This article offers a broad review of gender justice jurisprudence in India between 1993 and 2022. In analysing some of the landmark judgements on women's rights in the intervening years, the authors find the judicial approach to gender equality uneven and at times, conflicting. Despite the significant advancements in the jurisprudence of gender equality and dignity, discrimination and inequality persist on a staggering scale. The article argues for the continued importance of subjecting equality jurisprudence to feminist critical inquiry, which pays attention to the deeper structural and systemic issues that impact gender equality.

Shades Of Life In Indian Abortion Law, Gauri Pillai Jan 2022

Shades Of Life In Indian Abortion Law, Gauri Pillai

National Law School Journal

This case comment analyses the recent Kerala High Court decision in Cry of Life Society v Union of India, where a petition was filed to declare India's law on abortion unconstitutional for violating the right to life of the foetus. The High Court dismissed the petition, upholding the constitutionality of the legislation as protecting women's right to life. The author discusses the High Court's order, narrowing in on the right to life argument used by the Court, and the right to life argument that the Court missed. This analysis distils and responds to the 'shades of life' underlying abortion law …

The Epiphytic Diatom Community Of An Invasive Macroalga, Starry Stonewort (Charales: Nitellopsis Obtusa) And Its Native Relative, Chara Contraria (Charales) From Two Drowned River Mouth Lakes, Kelsey Inman-Carter

Student Summer Scholars Manuscripts

Epiphytic diatoms are essential primary producers in aquatic environments, but the relationship between them and their hosts is not well understood. The purpose of this project is to understand the specificity of a macroalgal host-epiphytic diatom relationship in Pentwater and Muskegon Lakes, and compare the epiphytic diatom communities of the invasive Nitellopsis obtusa to its close native relative, Chara contraria, using a metabarcoding approach. To these ends, host samples were collected monthly from July to September in 2020 (90 samples) and in June 2021 (55 samples). DNA was extracted from each sample and the plastid RUBISCO (rbcL) barcoding region of …

Water Use Characteristics Of Weeds: A Global Review, Best Practices, And Future Directions, Mandeep Singh, Meetpal Singh Kukal, Suat Irmak, Amit J. Jhala

Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Faculty Publications

Weeds usually penalize crop yields by competing for resources, such as water, light, nutrients, and space. Most of the studies on the crop-weed competition domain are limited to assessing crop-yield losses due to weed pressure and other crop-weed interactions, overlooking the significant uptake of soil-water by weeds that exacerbates global water constraints and threatens the productivity and profitability. The objective of this review was to synthesize globally available quantitative data on weed water use (WU) sourced from 23 peer-reviewed publications (filtered from 233 publications via a multi-step protocol of inclusion criteria) with experimental investigations across space (3 continents), time (1927–2018), …

Future Orientation Among Children Affected By Parental Hiv In China: An Exploratory Analysis Of Complex Interactions, Heather L. Mcdaniel, Sayward E. Harrison, Amanda J. Fairchild, Xiaoming Li Ph.D.

Faculty Publications

We utilized an exploratory analytic approach to examine predictors of children's future beliefs, an internal asset associated with resilience among children affected by HIV, with emphasis on complex interactions among multisystem factors. Children (N = 1221) affected by parental HIV in China reported on psychosocial functioning, as well as internal, familial, and community resilience assets. Exploratory data analysis was conducted using a binary segmentation program. Six binary splits on predictors accounted for 22.78% of the variance in future expectation, suggesting interactions between children's perceived control of their future, loneliness, caregiver trust, and social support. Four binary splits accounted for …

Emergence Of Clinical Clostridioides Difficile Isolates With Decreased Susceptibility To Vancomycin, Charles Darkoh, Kadiatou Keita, Chioma Odo, Micah Oyaro, Eric L Brown, Cesar A Arias, Blake M Hanson, Herbert L Dupont

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

BACKGROUND: Clostridioides difficile infection (CDI) is a leading cause of hospital-associated antibiotic-related diarrhea and deaths worldwide. Vancomycin is one of the few antibiotics recommended for both nonsevere and severe CDI cases. We sought to determine whether vancomycin nonsusceptible C. difficile strains are circulating in the patient population.

METHODS: Stool samples from patients with CDI were collected from 438 and 98 patients at a large university hospital in Houston, Texas, and Nairobi, Kenya, respectively. The stools were examined for the presence of vancomycin and metronidazole nonsusceptible C. difficile using broth dilution culture, Etest (BioMérieux, France), polymerase chain reaction (PCR), whole-genome sequencing, …

Transcriptomes Of Peripheral Blood Mononuclear Cells From Juvenile Dermatomyositis Patients Show Elevated Inflammation Even When Clinically Inactive, Elisha D O Roberson, Rosana A Mesa, Gabrielle A Morgan, Li Cao, Wilfredo Marin, Lauren M Pachman

Open Access Publications

In juvenile dermatomyositis (JDM), the most common pediatric inflammatory myopathy, weakness is accompanied by a characteristic rash that often becomes chronic and is associated with vascular damage. We hoped to understand the molecular underpinnings of JDM, particularly when untreated, which would facilitate the identification of novel mechanisms and clinical targets that might disrupt disease progression. We studied the RNA-Seq data from untreated JDM peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs; n = 11), PBMCs from a subset of the same patients when clinically inactive (n = 8/11), and separate samples of untreated JDM skin and muscle (n = 4 each). All JDM …

Does Data-Independent Acquisition Data Contain Hidden Gems? A Case Study Related To Alzheimer's Disease, Evan E Hubbard, Randall J Bateman, Richard J Perrin, Et Al.

2020-Current year OA Pubs

One of the potential benefits of using data-independent acquisition (DIA) proteomics protocols is that information not originally targeted by the study may be present and discovered by subsequent analysis. Herein, we reanalyzed DIA data originally recorded for global proteomic analysis to look for isomerized peptides, which occur as a result of spontaneous chemical modifications to long-lived proteins. Examination of a large set of human brain samples revealed a striking relationship between Alzheimer's disease (AD) status and isomerization of aspartic acid in a peptide from tau. Relative to controls, a surprising increase in isomer abundance was found in both autosomal dominant …

Adipose Tissue Uses In Peripheral Nerve Surgery, Allison Podsednik, Raysa Cabrejo, Joseph Rosen Jan 2022

Adipose Tissue Uses In Peripheral Nerve Surgery, Allison Podsednik, Raysa Cabrejo, Joseph Rosen

School of Medicine Publications

Currently, many different techniques exist for the surgical repair of peripheral nerves. The degree of injury dictates the repair and, depending on the defect or injury of the peripheral nerve, plastic surgeons can perform nerve repairs, grafts, and transfers. All the previously listed techniques are routinely performed in human patients, but a novel addition to these peripheral nerve surgeries involves concomitant fat grafting to the repair site at the time of surgery. Fat grafting provides adipose-derived stem cells to the injury site. Though fat grafting is performed as an adjunct to some peripheral nerve surgeries, there is no clear evidence …

3’Aqtl-Atlas: An Atlas Of 3’Utr Alternative Polyadenylation Quantitative Trait Loci Across Human Normal Tissues, Ya Cui, Fanglue Peng, Dan Wang, Yumei Li, Jason Sheng Li, Lei Li, Wei Li

Faculty, Staff and Students Publications

Genome-wide association studies (GWAS) have identified thousands of non-coding single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) associated with human traits and diseases. However, functional interpretation of these SNPs remains a significant challenge. Our recent study established the concept of 3' untranslated region (3'UTR) alternative polyadenylation (APA) quantitative trait loci (3'aQTLs), which can be used to interpret ∼16.1% of GWAS SNPs and are distinct from gene expression QTLs and splicing QTLs. Despite the growing interest in 3'aQTLs, there is no comprehensive database for users to search and visualize them across human normal tissues. In the 3'aQTL-atlas (https://wlcb.oit.uci.edu/3aQTLatlas), we provide a comprehensive list of 3'aQTLs containing …

Grassland Landscape Design: Working With Land-Managers, C. J. Pearson, R. K. Mann, I. G. Mann

IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)

We are entering an era of landscape design in order to simultaneously tackle largescale issues such as salinity and rising water tables, whole-farm profitability and the maintenance or enhancement of rural communities. In Australia, an important element of landscape design will be the reintroduction or broadening of the base of perennial grasses within farm systems. The goal of this project was to accelerate awareness and adoption of perennial grasses in a large but ecologically-specific area, namely the already-cleared steep uplands in the high rainfall recharge areas of the Murray-Darling Basin. We used a participatory model, in which land-managers made monthly …

Results With Methods For Measuring Herbage Mass In Situ, G. Nagy, I. Vinczeffy, K. Petõ

IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)

Two indirect methods for estimating herbage mass in situ were investigated in a research programme. Electric capacitance and spectral reflectance measurements were made and estimated values were compared with cut herbage mass results. Vegetation indexes (VI) measured by spectroradiometer showed a high correlation with fresh herbage mass, but there was no correlation observed between VI and dry matter results. Equations installed in electric capacitance meter were not feasible for Hungarian conditions. The change of electric capacitance in the sward (CMR) gave no correlation with cut DM yields. The investigated indirect methods are not suitable for research or production use yet.

Application Of Municipal Biosolids To Bahiagrass Pasture: Trace Metals In Harvested Forage, R. M. Muchovej, J. E. Rechcigl

IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)

Municipal biosolids (sewage sludge) are the by-products of wastewater treatment plants and their production, worldwide, has steadily increased over the past years. Florida is one of the fastest growing states in the USA. Biosolids are readily and increasingly available throughout the state. Pasture fertilization has been shown to increase biomass and quality of bahiagrass (Paspalum notatum Flugge) dramatically in Florida sandy soils. Nevertheless, with low cattle prices, ranchers are forced to reduce fertilizers inputs. Biosolids contain considerable amounts of nutrients, especially nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P), sulphur (S), calcium (Ca), and micronutrients, and are inexpensive when compared with commercial fertilizers. …

IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)

Vegetation maps have been made since centuries. The vegetation cover was represented as homogeneous mapping units (polygons), representing different vegetation types, where each type consists a combination of different plant species (floristic composition). More recent, with the use of satellite imagery, the polygons have been replaced by pixels with similar content as the polygon maps. In both approaches, field-observations were linked to the mapping units (polygons or pixels) often resulting in a complex of different vegetation types per mapping unit. In our new approach field data (sample points) on presence and abundance of individual grass species are spatially extrapolated based …

Mathematically Modeling Prey-Catching Behavior Of The Tomato Frog, Conrad Tyler, Sarah Marzen, Jenna Monroy Jan 2022

Mathematically Modeling Prey-Catching Behavior Of The Tomato Frog, Conrad Tyler, Sarah Marzen, Jenna Monroy

Spora: A Journal of Biomathematics

Many microhylid frog species, such as the tomato frog, Dyscophus sp., have demonstrated the ability to aim their tongues independently of head and jaw movements. However, a trade-off between tongue-aiming and head-only aiming exists in which the former allows for crypsis but lacks speed whereas the latter is faster but less accurate and more noticeable to prey. For frogs that can move their tongues independently of their heads, under what circumstances will they utilize each strategy, and why? We derive a model, dependent on factors relevant for prey-catching, for the probability the frog will turn its head (and not …

Digestibility Estimates Based On A Grass Growth Model Are Distributed Via Internet To Finnish Farmers, Marketta Rinne, J. Nousiainen, I. Mattila, H. Nikander, P. Huhtanen

IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)

Optimising the harvesting time of grass in primary growth is difficult under Finnish climatic conditions, because the digestibility of grass decreases on average by 0.5 percentage units daily. We constructed a model based on cumulative temperature and geographical location which estimates the digestibility of grass. This model is used to produce estimates utilising real time weather information. The estimates are presented as a map, which is revised daily. Farmers have free access to the maps via Internet.

Reducing Tillage Affects Long-Term Yields But Not Grain Quality Of Maize, Soybeans, Oats, And Wheat Produced In Three Contrasting Farming Systems, Kirsten Ann Pearsons, Emmanuel Chiwo Omondi, Brad J. Heins, Gladis Zinati, Andrew Smith, Yichao Rui

Agricultural and Environmental Sciences Faculty Research

Reducing tillage has been widely promoted to reduce soil erosion, maintain soil health, and sustain long-term food production. The effects of reducing tillage on crop nutritional quality in organic and conventional systems, however, has not been widely explored. One possible driver of crop nutritional quality might be the changing soil nitrogen (N) availability associated with reduced tillage in various management systems. To test how reducing tillage affects crop nutritional quality under contrasting conventional and organic farming systems with varied N inputs, we measured nutritional quality (protein, fat, starch, ash, net energy, total digestible nutrients, and concentrations of Ca, K, Mg, …

Glycocalyx Mechanotransduction Mechanisms Are Involved In Renal Cancer Metastasis, Heriberto Moran, Limary M. Cancel, Peigen Huang, Sylvie Roberge, Tuoye Xu, John M. Tarbell, Lance L. Munn

Publications and Research

Mammalian cells, including cancer cells, are covered by a surface layer containing cell bound proteoglycans, glycoproteins, associated glycosaminoglycans and bound proteins that is commonly referred to as the glycocalyx. Solid tumors also have a dynamic fluid microenvironment with elevated interstitial flow. In the present work we further investigate the hypothesis that interstitial flow is sensed by the tumor glycocalyx leading to activation of cell motility and metastasis. Using a highly metastatic renal carcinoma cell line (SN12L1) and its low metastatic counterpart (SN12C) we demonstrate in vitro that the small molecule Suberoylanilide Hydroxamic Acid (SAHA) inhibits the heparan sulfate synthesis enzyme …
