“’My Walk Matches My Talk’: An Exploratory Study Of A Moral Rehabilitation Program For Incarcerated Women.”, Kelley Christopher, Abigail Kolb, Tiffany A. Parsons

The Journal of Public and Professional Sociology

While there have been numerous studies demonstrating the effectiveness of moral rehabilitation prison educational programs, few have focused on the effectiveness of these programs for incarcerated women. The current research is an exploratory study based upon eight participants’ initial perceptions of a four-year bachelor’s program in theology, taught through the New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary (NOBTS). Our preliminary results are consistent with the previous literature about NOBTS students’ histories of abuse and tragedy, straying from faith, negotiation of identity, and programming challenges the students face. These women’s narratives provide an initial exploration into the ways in which the NOBTS program …

Reduction Of Stabilin-2 Contributes To A Protection Against Atherosclerosis, Yukako Kayashima, Connor A. Clanton, Amanda M. Lewis, Xinghui Sun, Sylvia Hiller, Phillip Huynh, Jennifer Wilder, John Hagaman, Feng Li, Nobuyo Maeda-Smithies, Ed Harris

Department of Biochemistry: Faculty Publications

We have previously identified a novel atherosclerosis quantitative trait locus (QTL), Arch atherosclerosis 5 (Aath5), on mouse chromosome 10 by three-way QTL analyses between Apoe−/− mice on a DBA/2J, 129S6 and C57BL/6J background. The DBA/2J haplotype at the Aath5 locus was associated with smaller plaque size. One of the candidate genes underlying Aath5 was Stabilin-2 (Stab2), which encodes a clearance receptor for hyaluronan (HA) predominantly expressed in liver sinusoidal endothelial cells (LSECs). However, the role of Stab2 in atherosclerosis is unknown. A congenic line of Apoe−/− mice carrying Aath5 covering the Stab2 …

The Ability To Classify Patients Based On Gene-Expression Data Varies By Algorithm And Performance Metric, Stephen Piccolo, Avery Mecham, Nathan P. Golightly, Jérémie L. Johnson, Dustin B. Miller

Faculty Publications

By classifying patients into subgroups, clinicians can provide more effective care than using a uniform approach for all patients. Such subgroups might include patients with a particular disease subtype, patients with a good (or poor) prognosis, or patients most (or least) likely to respond to a particular therapy. Transcriptomic measurements reflect the downstream effects of genomic and epigenomic variations. However, high-throughput technologies generate thousands of measurements per patient, and complex dependencies exist among genes, so it may be infeasible to classify patients using traditional statistical models. Machine-learning classification algorithms can help with this problem. However, hundreds of classification algorithms exist—and …

Human Impact On Planetary Temperature And Glacial Volume: Extending A Toy Climate Model To A New Millennium, Samantha Secor, Jennifer Switkes

CODEE Journal

Starting with a toy climate model from the literature, we employ a system of two nonlinear differential equations to model the reciprocal effects of the average temperature and the percentage of glacial volume on Earth. In the literature, this model is used to demonstrate the potential for a stable periodic orbit over a long time span in the form of an attracting limit cycle. In the roughly twenty five years since this model appeared in the literature, the effects of global warming and human-impacted climate change have become much more well known and apparent. We demonstrate modification of initial conditions …

Computational modeling is an essential component of modern drug discovery. One of its most important applications is to select promising drug candidates for pharmacologically relevant target proteins. Because of continuing advances in structural biology, putative binding sites for small organic molecules are being discovered in numerous proteins linked to various diseases. These valuable data offer new opportunities to build efficient computational models predicting binding molecules for target sites through the application of data mining and machine learning. In particular, deep neural networks are powerful techniques capable of learning from complex data in order to make informed drug binding predictions. In …

2020-Current year OA Pubs

The pathophysiology of acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) includes the accumulation of protein-rich pulmonary edema in the air spaces and interstitial areas of the lung, variable degrees of epithelial injury, variable degrees of endothelial barrier disruption, transmigration of leukocytes, alongside impaired fluid and ion clearance. These pathophysiological features are different between patients contributing to substantial biological heterogeneity. In this context, it is perhaps unsurprising that a wide range of pharmacological interventions targeting these pathophysiological processes have failed to improve patient outcomes. In this manuscript, our goal is to provide a narrative summary of the potential methods to capture the underlying …

Creation Of An Influenza A Virus Neuraminidase Consensus Vaccine In An Adenoviral Vector, Leigh Jahnke Mar 2022

Creation Of An Influenza A Virus Neuraminidase Consensus Vaccine In An Adenoviral Vector, Leigh Jahnke

Honors Program: Senior Projects (Public)

In the last decade, the estimated annual burden of the flu includes 12,000-52,000 deaths, 140,000-710,000 hospitalizations, and 9 million – 41 million illnesses (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention: Disease burden of the flu). Influenza A virus can mutate and infect a variety of different hosts, which results in frequent antigenic changes and even pandemics. This has led to increased attention on the creation of a universal Influenza A vaccine containing broader immunogenic coverage than current vaccines. Our research involved detailing the steps of the cloning process utilizing a consensus neuraminidase antigen. We utilized the pAdEasy Adenoviral Vector …

Predicting Autism From Infant Characteristics: A Systematic Review, Alysha Y. Henrichs, Cynthia Cress Ph.D. Mar 2022

Predicting Autism From Infant Characteristics: A Systematic Review, Alysha Y. Henrichs, Cynthia Cress Ph.D.

Honors Program: Senior Projects (Public)

A literature review was conducted of 73 articles to explore 12-month-old characteristics in infants that predicted later diagnosis with autism (ASD). Articles were reviewed if they discussed ASD, infants with siblings diagnosed with autism (high-risk) and/or infants later diagnosed with autism without known family history of ASD (low risk). Articles were not reviewed if the participants were 36 months or older at the start of the study. More factors were identified that discriminate characteristics associated with later ASD diagnosis in infants between 12-24 months compared to characteristics of infants below 12 months. Characteristics of infants under 12 months that were …

A Theory Of City Biogeography And The Origin Of Urban Species, Ryan A. Martin Mar 2022

A Theory Of City Biogeography And The Origin Of Urban Species, Ryan A. Martin

Faculty Scholarship

Many of the choices humans make with regard to infrastructure, urban planning and other phenomena have impacts that will last thousands of years. This can readily be seen in modern cities in which contemporary streets run along street grids that were laid out thousands of years prior or even in which ancient viaducts still play a role. However, rarely do evolutionary biologists explicitly consider the future of life likely to be associated with the decisions we are making today. Here, we consider the evolutionary future of species in cities with a focus on the origin of lineages and species. We …

Adjudicating Identity, Laura Lane-Steele Mar 2022

Adjudicating Identity, Laura Lane-Steele

Texas A&M Law Review

Legal actors examine identity claims with varying degrees of intensity. For instance, to be considered “female” for the U.S. Census, self-identification alone is sufficient, and no additional evidence is necessary. To change a sex marker on a birth certificate to “female,” however, self-identification is not enough; some states require people to show that they do not have a penis to be considered “female.” Similar examples of discrepancies in the type and amount of evidence considered for identity claims abound across identities and areas of law. Yet legal actors rarely acknowledge that they are adjudicating identity in the first place, much …

Exploiting Radiation Induction Of Antigens In Cancer: Targeted Drug Delivery, Vaishali Kapoor, Abhay K Singh, Calvin D Lewis, Sapna Deore, Dennis E Hallahan

Open Access Publications

Therapeutic antibodies used to treat cancer are effective in patients with advanced-stage disease. For example, antibodies that activate T-lymphocytes improve survival in many cancer subtypes. In addition, antibody-drug conjugates effectively target cytotoxic agents that are specific to cancer. This review discusses radiation-inducible antigens, which are stress-regulated proteins that are over-expressed in cancer. These inducible cell surface proteins become accessible to antibody binding during the cellular response to genotoxic stress. The lead antigens are induced in all histologic subtypes and nearly all advanced-stage cancers, but show little to no expression in normal tissues. Inducible antigens are exploited by using therapeutic antibodies …

Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity

We introduce a time-dependent, one-dimensional model of early diagenesis that we term RADI, an acronym accounting for the main processes included in the model: chemical reactions, advection, molecular and bio-diffusion, and bio-irrigation. RADI is targeted for study of deep-sea sediments, in particular those containing calcium carbonates (CaCO3). RADI combines CaCO3 dissolution driven by organic matter degradation with a diffusive boundary layer and integrates state-of-the-art parameterizations of CaCO3 dissolution kinetics in seawater, thus serving as a link between mechanistic surface reaction modeling and global-scale biogeochemical models. RADI also includes CaCO3 precipitation, providing a continuum between CaCO3 dissolution and precipitation. RADI integrates …

Analysis Of A Mathematical Model Of Real-Time Competitive Binding On A Microarray, Frank H. Lynch

CODEE Journal

A mathematical model of competitive binding on a microarray in real-time yields a planar system of nonlinear ordinary differential equations. This model can be used to explore dimensionless formulation, linear approximation, and reduction. Real-time competitive binding is proposed as an uncommon approach to advance the study of planar systems of differential equations.

Deepreal: A Deep Learning Powered Multi-Scalemodeling Framework For Predicting Out-Of-Distributionligand-Induced Gpcr Activity, Tian Cai, Kyra Alyssa Abbu, Yang Liu, Lei Xie

Publications and Research

Motivation Drug discovery has witnessed intensive exploration of predictive modeling of drug–target physical interactions over two decades. However, a critical knowledge gap needs to be filled for correlating drug–target interactions with clinical outcomes: predicting genome-wide receptor activities or function selectivity, especially agonist versus antagonist, induced by novel chemicals. Two major obstacles compound the difficulty on this task: known data of receptor activity is far too scarce to train a robust model in light of genome-scale applications, and real-world applications need to deploy a model on data from various shifted distributions.

Results To address these challenges, we have developed an end-to-end …

School of Veterinary and Biomedical Sciences: Faculty Publications

The threat of bovine respiratory disease (BRD) for cattle operations is exacerbated by increasing prevalence of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) in Mannheimia haemolytica, a leading cause of BRD. Characterization of AMR in M. haemolytica by culture and susceptibility testing is complicated by uncertainty regarding the number of colonies that must be selected to accurately characterize AMR phenotypes (antibiograms) and genotypes in a culture. The study objective was to assess phenotypic and genotypic diversity of M. haemolytica isolates on nasopharyngeal swabs (NPS) from 28 cattle at risk for BRD or with BRD. NPS were swabbed onto five consecutive blood agar plates; …

Aiming To Please: Navigating Intersectional Realities, Priscilla Kar Yee Lo

Theses and Dissertations

As a product of a Chinese immigrant family in North America, I was perpetually reminded to be practical about my future. But after over a decade as a health care professional, I began to feel dissatisfied with the direction of my life. I turned to creative outlets to find a voice and to explore my identity as a female of colour. To create work as an act of remembrance of the collective intersectional adversity minority women continue to face. I was drawn to glass because it is inherently paradoxical, constantly in a state of fragility and permanency. This mirrors the …

Two sulphur-oxidizing, chemolithoautotrophic aerobes were isolated from the chemocline of an anchialine sinkhole located within the Weeki Wachee River of Florida. Gram-stain-negative cells of both strains were motile, chemotactic rods. Phylogenetic analysis of the 16S rRNA gene and predicted amino acid sequences of ribosomal proteins, average nucleotide identities, and alignment fractions suggest the strains HH1T and HH3T represent novel species belonging to the genus Thiomicrorhabdus. The genome G+C fraction of HH1T is 47.8 mol% with a genome length of 2.61 Mb, whereas HH3T has a G+C fraction of 52.4 mol% and 2.49 Mb genome length. Major fatty acids of the …

It is known that 8-chloro-adenosine (8-Cl-Ado) is a novel RNA-directed nucleoside analog that targets leukemic stem cells (LSCs). In a phase I clinical trial with 8-Cl-Ado in patients with refractory or relapsed (R/R) AML, we observed encouraging but short-lived clinical responses, likely due to intrinsic mechanisms of LSC resistance. LSC homeostasis depends on amino acid-driven and/or fatty acid oxidation (FAO)-driven oxidative phosphorylation (OXPHOS) for survival. We recently reported that 8-Cl-Ado and the BCL-2-selective inhibitor venetoclax (VEN) synergistically inhibit FAO and OXPHOS in LSCs, thereby suppressing acute myeloid leukemia (AML) growth in vitro and in vivo. Herein, we report that 8-Cl-Ado …
