Radiation Oncology Meeting Abstracts
Purpose/Objective(s): Recent research efforts utilizing knowledge-based treatment planning for the prediction of 3D radiation dose distributions from planning structure sets have achieved positive results. Most ongoing efforts to generate deliverable plans from the predicted doses rely on full inverse optimizations using dose-volume histogram (DVH) objectives derived from these doses. In this study, we aim to leverage deep learning (DL) to rapidly generate machine delivery parameters for volumetric modulated arc therapy (VMAT) from predicted desired doses.
Materials/Methods: Data of 50 previously treated patients at our institution with prostate adenocarcinoma who received definitive radiotherapy were retrospectively obtained. All plans were generated with …

Scholars theorize racial apathy is one form contemporary white racial prejudice takes. Racial apathy signals not caring about racial inequality. Invoking intergroup contact theory, we hypothesize interracial contact would predict less racial apathy among whites. To test our hypothesis, we analyze survey data from white teenagers participating in the 2003 National Study of Youth and Religion (NSYR). We find interracial contact matters and its inclusion improves model fit over and above previously specified correlates. Specifically, interracial friendship and dating, and having a different race mentor predict the tendency to care about racial equality. Furthermore, any interracial contact and a count …

Evaluating Translocation Strategies For Box Turtles In Urbanizing Landscapes, Elizabeth D. Hays
Evaluating Translocation Strategies For Box Turtles In Urbanizing Landscapes, Elizabeth D. Hays
Biological Sciences Undergraduate Honors Theses
Urbanization of landscapes, resulting in habitat degradation, loss, and fragmentation, is a significant contributor to the global decline of reptile biodiversity. Although translocation is a common management strategy for wildlife populations subject to urbanization, the efficacy of reptile translocation studies, including those of box turtles (Terrapene spp.), is highly variable. Hard-release translocation of box turtles has often proven ineffective due to homing attempts and rapid post-translocation movements. Some studies have presented soft-release as a possible method for mitigation of the negative effects of hard-release, yet those studies have also produced mixed results. Therefore, I radiotracked 18 translocated Terrapene carolina …

The need to decarbonize society has driven the development of alternative energy technologies. Solar panels are capable of generating electricity at large scale and at competitive costs to fossil fuels, such as coal or natural gas. However, they are only capable of generating electricity when the sun is out. It is therefore necessary to understand how to store that energy for on-demand use. It is also desirable that the storage be portable, lightweight, and compatible with transportation infrastructure like fossil fuels are. A very desirable chemical fuel is H2 which can be produced simply by water electrolysis. Production of …
Performance Evaluation Of Recycled Plastic Pins In Two Layers To Stabilize Deep Slope Failures, Sachini Madanayake
Performance Evaluation Of Recycled Plastic Pins In Two Layers To Stabilize Deep Slope Failures, Sachini Madanayake
Civil Engineering Dissertations - Archive
Slope failures are a common occurrence in highway embankments throughout Texas due to the presence of high plastic clays with expansive behavior. Although shallow slope failures are prevalent, slope failures extending deeper into the slope occur due to the development of micro and macro cracks. The cracks facilitate the infiltration of rainwater deeper into the slope over time. Slope failures incur thousands of dollars’ worth of repairs every year for transportation departments across the country. Recycled Plastic Pins (RPP) have been identified as an effective, cost efficient, and sustainable solution to stabilize shallow failures. The resistance of RPP is mobilized …
The Effect Of Aphantasia On Visual Memory Retention, Joshua M. Bain
The Effect Of Aphantasia On Visual Memory Retention, Joshua M. Bain
Longwood Senior Theses
Aphantasia is the inability to create mental imagery which affects approximately 2% of people in the world (Zeman et al., 2015). The vividness of visual imagery questionnaire (VVIQ) was used to sort participants into four groups (aphantasia, low, medium, and high vividness) based on their vividness score with aphantasia participants scoring a 16 (the minimum). I tested the effect of aphantasia on scores of a visual memory recall test. Participants saw two of six possible images and answered five questions per image. Analysis of the results did not show any significant difference between aphantasia and non-aphantasia scores on the recall …

Estuaries are critical habitats subject to a range of stressors requiring effective management. Microbes are gaining recognition as effective environmental indicators, however, the response of host associated communities to stressors remains poorly understood. We examined microbial communities from seawater, sediments and the estuarine fish Pelates sexlineatus, in Australia's largest urbanised estuary, and hypothesised that anthropogenic contamination would be reflected in the microbiology of these sample types. The human faecal markers Lachno3 and HF183 were not detected, indicating negligible influence of sewage, but a gradient in copy numbers of the class 1 integron (intI-1), which is often used as …
Increasing Production Of Therapeutic Mabs In Cho Cells Through Genetic Engineering, Charles Barentine
Increasing Production Of Therapeutic Mabs In Cho Cells Through Genetic Engineering, Charles Barentine
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Between 2014 and 2018, the global market for therapeutic monoclonal antibodies (mAbs) rose from $60 billion to $115.2 billion with a projected value of $300 billion by 2025. These molecules are used to effectively treat some of the most challenging illnesses from auto-immune diseases to cancer. While mAbs are highly valuable with potent applications, their production at scale remains an outstanding challenge. These molecules are largely produced in Chinese Hamster Ovary (CHO) cells that require highly specific conditions to produce a useful product.
Genetic engineering presents one solution to overcome productivity limits. With the advent of CRISPR (clustered regularly interspaced …

Avian Species Distribution Models: Using Location Data To Inform Management Decisions, Marilyn E. Wright
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Both state and federal wildlife agencies strive to conserve and protect wildlife and their habitats as an important public resource. Applied management decisions often rely on being able to obtain data that can efficiently and effectively enhance the understanding of these systems for informing management actions. Wildlife managers often focus efforts on a small subset of species from an ecosystem, typically called focal species, who can serve as surrogates for understanding the health and function of the system. Models that consider how these focal species interact with the ecosystem are often used to better understand important aspects of their life …

Bugs, Bullets And Birds: Factors Affecting The Health And Survival Of Ferruginous Hawk Nestlings In The Intermountain West, Ellis A. Juhlin
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Ferruginous Hawks are a bird of prey species that nest in sagebrush steppe and grassland habitat. These birds are threatened by habitat loss and fragmentation from urbanization, rural development, oil and natural gas extraction, habitat treatment projects, and wildfires, and experiencing widespread population declines across their breeding range. Because of this, Ferruginous Hawks (FEHAs) have been deemed a Species of Greatest Conservation Need by state management agencies in Utah, Idaho, Wyoming and Nevada. The health and survival of Ferruginous Hawk (FEHA) nestlings is crucial to long-term population viability. Understanding the threats these birds are facing as nestlings can provide valuable …

Extreme, Positive Geomorphic Change In A Historically Degraded Desert River: Implications For Imperiled Fishes, Tansy T. Remiszewski
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Rivers comprise some of the most unique and biodiverse ecosystems on the planet with their waters supporting both human societies as well as the organisms that make these rivers their home. Large rivers like the Colorado are often highly regulated and diverted in order to support human residence in arid regions like the desert Southwest, and these water diversions often have dramatic, negative impacts on the natural flow regime of the river. These impacts leave large reaches of the river dry, reduce the river’s capacity to transport sediment, cause channel and habitat homogenization, and significantly reduce the amount of suitable …
Seed Ecology And Regeneration Processes To Inform Seed-Based Wetland Restoration, Emily E. Tarsa
Seed Ecology And Regeneration Processes To Inform Seed-Based Wetland Restoration, Emily E. Tarsa
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Wetlands provide immense value to wildlife and humans but have been degrading rapidly around the world. One major challenge is the loss of native plant species in wetlands, which limits the ability of wetlands to function as they should. Restoring wetlands requires a combination of removing the cause of degradation (such as invasive plant species) and, in many cases, actively returning native plants to the site especially via seeding. Further, early plant life stages are the most vulnerable for plants and is often the time in which sown species die and fail to establish. Thus, understanding how and why seeds …
Development Of In Situ Second-Order Nonlinear Optical Scatterings For Molecular Behaviors At Aerosol Surfaces, Yuqin Qian
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Aerosol particles are one of the most important components of the atmosphere. During the growth of aerosol particles, they directly or indirectly affect air quality, human health, and environmental chemistry. Therefore, understanding the chemical and physical properties of such particles is an important scientific, engineering, and medical issue. The growth of aerosol particles in the atmosphere is closely related to the chemical structure at its surface, as well as the heterogeneous reactions which take place at and below the particle’s surface. However, there is a lack of suitable surface-specific analytical techniques which directly measure the chemical structure of aerosol particle …
The Relationship Between Bird Species Richness And Human Appropriation Of Net Primary Productivity, Kaeli Mueller
The Relationship Between Bird Species Richness And Human Appropriation Of Net Primary Productivity, Kaeli Mueller
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
As humans harvest increasing amounts of biomass, it is crucial to gain an understanding of how much energy is being appropriated and the impact that this could have on ecosystems and biodiversity. The primary way in which humans impact biodiversity loss is through land use change. One way of quantifying the impact of land use change is through human appropriation of net primary production (HANPP). This measurement represents the total amount of energy derived from photosynthesis that humans remove from ecosystems and appropriate for their own use. My research studies the relationship between HANPP and bird species richness at the …

Dust Deposition Changes Production, Chlorophyll-A And Community Composition In Mountain Lakes, Jiahao Wen
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Increasing quantities of dust emitted from semi-arid soils, agricultural soils, and urban regions are blown to remote mountain lakes in the American West. Remote mountain lakes lacking local nutrient inputs and presenting simple food webs that are easily affected by climate changes. Dust can carry nutrients (e.g., nitrogen and phosphorus) to mountain lakes and potentially enhance algae growth and change algal communities. However, experimental tests of this hypothesis are lacking. Using in situ experiments, we investigated the effects of dust enrichment on the production, biomass, and primary algal species in three mountain lakes in the American West. We found that …
Nest‐Site Selection, Success, And Response To Predators By Cinnamon Teal And Other Ground‐Nesting Ducks In The Wetlands Of Great Salt Lake, Utah, Mark E. Bell
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
The wetlands of Great Salt Lake once supported hundreds of thousands of nesting ducks each year. In recent years, the number of nesting ducks in the same area was a fraction of those historic numbers. While many species of ducks do not rely on these wetlands for primary nesting habitat, cinnamon teal (Spatula cyanoptera) do. Great Salt Lake and its associated wetlands are in the heart of the cinnamon teal breeding range, and once supported half of the continental population.
These wetlands are unique from other wetlands where waterfowl nest because they are artificially created using dams to hold …

The Role Of Lipocalin 2 In Type 1 Diabetic Osteopathy, Rawan Mahmoud Bdair
Theses
Lipocalin 2 (LCN2), also known as neutrophil gelatinase-associated lipocalin (NGAL), plays an important role in the innate immune response and functions as a growth factor. The role of LCN2 as an anti-inflammatory protein and its function in bone metabolism is poorly understood. It is hypothesized that the administration of Lipocalin-2 in diabetic and non-diabetic rats will positively improve the bone microstructure. This study investigated the effect of lipocalin2 on bone metabolism in type 1 diabetic osteopathy (T1DO). Three-month-old male Wistar rats (n=24) were obtained from the animal house facility at United Arab Emirates University (UAEU) for this study. All animal …

Background Ocean microbes constitute ~ 70% of the marine biomass, are responsible for ~ 50% of the Earth’s primary production and are crucial for global biogeochemical cycles. Marine microbiotas include core taxa that are usually key for ecosystem function. Despite their importance, core marine microbes are relatively unknown, which reflects the lack of consensus on how to identify them. So far, most core microbiotas have been defined based on species occurrence and abundance. Yet, species interactions are also important to identify core microbes, as communities include interacting species. Here, we investigate interconnected bacteria and small protists of the core pelagic …

Objective
In gout, hyperuricemia promotes urate crystal deposition that stimulates the NLRP3 inflammasome and IL-1β-mediated arthritis. Incident gout without background hyperuricemia is rarely reported. To identify hyperuricemia-independent mechanisms driving gout incidence and progression, we characterized erosive urate crystalline inflammatory arthritis meeting ACR/EULAR gout classification criteria in a normouricemic young adult female.
Methods
Whole genome sequencing, quantitative proteomics, whole blood RNA-seq, and IL-1β-induced murine knee synovitis characterized proband candidate genes, biomarkers, and pathogenic mechanisms.
Results
Lubricin was attenuated in proband serum, associated with elevated acute phase reactants and inflammatory whole blood transcripts and transcriptional pathways. The proband had predicted damaging gene …

In this work, it was evaluated the wear resistance, hardness, and surface roughness values of resin-based composites that applied in dentistry as restorative materials. The resin composites were made from six types of resin matrixes (A, B, C, D, E, and F) and each one of them has contained different types and ratios of monomers as well as the inorganic nano-fillers (SiO2, ZrO2, HA, and Al2O3). For each test, thirty specimens were prepared, which were classified into six groups depending on the types of the resin matrix and fillers used in the composites. The results prove that the nanocomposites that …
Identifying And Minimizing Underspecification In Breast Cancer Subtyping, Jonathan Cheuk-Kiu Tang
Identifying And Minimizing Underspecification In Breast Cancer Subtyping, Jonathan Cheuk-Kiu Tang
Master's Theses
In the realm of biomedical technology, both accuracy and consistency are crucial to the development and deployment of these tools. While accuracy is easy to measure, consistency metrics are not so simple to measure, especially in the scope of biomedicine where prediction consistency can be difficult to achieve. Typically, biomedical datasets contain a significantly larger amount of features compared to the amount of samples, which goes against ordinary data mining practices. As a result, predictive models may fail to find valid pathways for prediction during training on such datasets. This concept is known as underspecification.
Underspecification has been more accepted …
A Design Of A Digital Lockout Tagout System With Machine Learning, Brandon H. Chen
A Design Of A Digital Lockout Tagout System With Machine Learning, Brandon H. Chen
Master's Theses
Lockout Tagout (LOTO) is a safety procedure instated by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) when doing maintenance on dangerous machinery and hazardous power sources. In this procedure, authorized workers shut off the machinery and use physical locks and tags to prevent operation during maintenance. LOTO has been the industry standard for 32 years since it was instantiated, being used in many different industries such as industrial work, mining, and agriculture. However, LOTO is not without its issues. The LOTO procedure requires employees to be trained and is prone to human error. As well, there is a clash between …
A Study On The Effects Of Cementless Total Knee Arthroscopy Implants' Surface Morphology With Finite Element Analysis, Peter Hunt
Master's Theses
Total knee arthroscopy is one of the most performed and most successful orthopedic surgeries, with nearly a million procedures performed in 2020 in the United States alone. Due to changing patient demographics, the use of cementless fixation for implant stability is becoming more prevalent amongst recipients. Cementless implants rely on the surface morphology of a porous coating to bond implant to bone; the quality of this bond is dependent on an interference fit and the roughness, or coefficient of friction, between implant and bone. Stress shielding is a comparison of the properties in implanted bone to natural bone; it is …
