Interchromosomal Interaction Of Homologous Stat92e Alleles Regulates Transcriptional Switch During Stem-Cell Differentiation., Matthew Antel, Romir Raj, Madona Y G Masoud, Ziwei Pan, Sheng Li, Barbara G Mellone, Mayu Inaba
Faculty Research 2022
Pairing of homologous chromosomes in somatic cells provides the opportunity of interchromosomal interaction between homologous gene regions. In the Drosophila male germline, the Stat92E gene is highly expressed in a germline stem cell (GSC) and gradually downregulated during the differentiation. Here we show that the pairing of Stat92E is always tight in GSCs and immediately loosened in differentiating daughter cells, gonialblasts (GBs). Disturbance of Stat92E pairing by relocation of one locus to another chromosome or by knockdown of global pairing/anti-pairing factors both result in a failure of Stat92E downregulation, suggesting that the pairing is required for the decline in transcription. …

Department of Food Science and Technology: Faculty Publications
Epidemiological evidence of Shiga toxin-producing Escherichia coli (STEC) infections associated with the consumption of contaminated pork highlight the need for increased awareness of STEC as an emerging pathogen in the pork supply chain. The objective of this review is to contribute to our understanding of raw pork products as potential carriers of STEC into the food supply. We summarize and critically analyze primary literature reporting the prevalence of STEC in the raw pork production chain. The reported prevalence rate of stx-positive E. coli isolates in live swine, slaughtered swine, and retail pork samples around the world ranged from 4.4 …

The Intersection Of Evolutionary Computation And Explainable Ai, J Bacardit, Aei Brownlee, S Cagnoni, Et Al
School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics
In the past decade, Explainable Artificial Intelligence (XAI) has attracted a great interest in the research community, motivated by the need for explanations in critical AI applications. Some recent advances in XAI are based on Evolutionary Computation (EC) techniques, such as Genetic Programming. We call this trend EC for XAI. We argue that the full potential of EC methods has not been fully exploited yet in XAI, and call the community for future efforts in this field. Likewise, we find that there is a growing concern in EC regarding the explanation of population-based methods, i.e., their search process and outcomes. …

Hybrid U-Net: Semantic Segmentation Of High-Resolution Satellite Images To Detect War Destruction, Shima Nabiee, Matthew Harding, Jonathan Hersh, Nader Bagherzadeh
Economics Faculty Articles and Research
Destruction caused by violent conflicts play a big role in understanding the dynamics and consequences of conflicts, which is now the focus of a large body of ongoing literature in economics and political science. However, existing data on conflict largely come from news or eyewitness reports, which makes it incomplete, potentially unreliable, and biased for ongoing conflicts. Using satellite images and deep learning techniques, we can automatically extract objective information on violent events. To automate this process, we created a dataset of high-resolution satellite images of Syria and manually annotated the destroyed areas pixel-wise. Then, we used this dataset to …

Melanoma cells display distinct intrinsic phenotypic states. Here, we seek to characterize the molecular regulation of these states using multi-omic analyses of whole exome, transcriptome, microRNA, long non-coding RNA and DNA methylation data together with reverse-phase protein array data on a panel of 68 highly annotated early passage melanoma cell lines. We demonstrate that clearly defined cancer cell intrinsic transcriptomic programs are maintained in melanoma cells ex vivo and remain highly conserved within melanoma tumors, are associated with distinct immune features within tumors, and differentially correlate with checkpoint inhibitor and adoptive T cell therapy efficacy. Through integrative analyses we demonstrate …

This work presents how to assess the groundwater vulnerability to both pesticides and nitrate within the geospatial Decision Support system (s-DSS) of LandSupport, though two new web-based, freely-available dynamical tools, named the pesticide fate tool and nitrate fate tool. The pesticide fate tool is based on the extended transfer function model (TFM-ext), specifically expanded to consider the transport of reactive solutes, i.e., pesticides. The nitrate fate tool is based on the coupling of the ARMOSA model, used to simulate the crop growth dynamics and the consequent nitrate leaching within the most biological active zone (i.e. the rooting depth of the …

Hereditary Angioedema (HAE) is a rare disorder caused by C1 esterase inhibitor deficiency or dysfunction. Patients with HAE usually present without urticaria or pruritis affecting the skin, upper airway, or the gastrointestinal tract. They can also present with involvement of unusual sites making the diagnosis challenging and leading to unnecessary testing and complications. Prompt diagnosis and treatment is crucial to prevent mortality and morbidity associated with acute flare. Here we present, what is believed to be second case of isolated involvement of the jejunum from an attack of HAE.

Journal of Community Hospital Internal Medicine Perspectives
Introduction: Acute liver failure is a cause of major mortality in the United States. Although the liver possesses regenerative capabilities, liver transplantation is the mainstay of treating acute liver failure. This modality is associated with many financial and logistic challenges. In this regard, Extracorporeal Liver Support (ECLS) might help in reducing mortality as well as bridge a patient to liver transplant. In some cases, the sequelae of liver failure such as hepatic encephalopathy and multi-organ failure can be postponed long enough for the native liver to self-recover function. With this rationale, we sought to describe the mechanism of various ECLS …

Visualizing Depressive Symptom Improvement: Implementing the 17-Item Hamilton Depression Rating Scale
Abstract
Problem
Depression, a mental health diagnosis, has affected about 18.5% of adults (Villarroel & Terlizzi, 2020). Ketamine, a medication initially used as an anesthetic, has improved depressive symptoms in individuals struggling with treatment-resistant depression.
Method
This quality improvement (QI) project used the 17-item Hamilton Depression Rating Scale questionnaire to assess depressive symptom changes in patients receiving intramuscular ketamine for treatment-resistant depression. The questionnaire was administered to patients pre-and post-intramuscular ketamine administration. The data was collected on injections one, three, and six on each participant’s set schedule of injections …
Bee Brains: Dissecting Pollinator Behavior And The Importance Of Plasticity In The Face Of Changing Environments, Rachel Brant
Bee Brains: Dissecting Pollinator Behavior And The Importance Of Plasticity In The Face Of Changing Environments, Rachel Brant
Dissertations
All organisms face environmental variability, and much of contemporary biological research aims to understand the mechanisms allowing organisms to adapt and survive in the face of change. Animals residing in urban habitats face particularly high levels of unpredictability and environmental fluctuation due to changes based upon human desire. Though urban areas are considered relatively novel habitats, numerous species have adapted to city life, mediated through behavioral and physiological plasticity. Native bee species show particularly high species richness and abundance in urban settings, but the mechanisms driving this pattern are poorly understood. In this dissertation, I explore how bees employ plasticity …

Peripheral intravenous therapy is a commonly utilized treatment modality for the care of acutely ill pediatric patients. Two risk factors include infiltration and extravasation injuries. These injuries, peripheral intravenous infiltration or extravasation injuries (PIVIEs), can vary in their clinical manifestations from minor discomfort to harm as severe as loss of limb or disfigurement. Clinicians caring for patients at risk of developing PIVIEs need to be able to act quickly to reduce potential morbidity. The purpose of this project was to create a clinical practice guideline (CPG) that would guide staff intervention if a PIVIE occurs, with the ultimate goal of …
