The Mediating Effect Of Parental Involvement On Peer Influence And Belongingness On Adolescent Educational Aspirations, Thavy Van Garst
The Mediating Effect Of Parental Involvement On Peer Influence And Belongingness On Adolescent Educational Aspirations, Thavy Van Garst
University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations
Parental involvement has been found to be a significant influence in determining whether adolescents are more likely to succeed academically (Georgiou & Tourva, 2007). Amongst other influences, parental involvement has been shown to impact the ability to resist negative peer influence. Additionally, having a sense of belongingness influences the probability that an adolescent will aspire to achieve higher educational aspirations (Bouchard & Berg, 2017). However, researchers have yet to examine the combination of the importance of belongingness and the impact of positive peer influence on adolescents' educational aspirations. The present study aimed to investigate whether parental involvement had a significant …
Are Narcissism And Entitlement Associated With Higher Rates Of Violence And Unsuccessful Treatment Completion?, Melissa Chipollini
Are Narcissism And Entitlement Associated With Higher Rates Of Violence And Unsuccessful Treatment Completion?, Melissa Chipollini
PCOM Psychology Dissertations
Following the dimensional-categorical model of personality functioning, this study used archival data to examine the degree to which narcissism and entitlement determined engagement in violent acts and treatment completion. The study reviewed MCMI-III/IV scores, discharge summaries, and violence histories for a sample of 105 individuals who were referred for forensic outpatient services by the court. One-way ANOVAs were used to assess all four of the hypotheses (a) individuals with more than one violent act (vs. one violent act) would have significantly higher mean scores on the MCMI-III/IV entitlement subscale, (b) individuals with more than one violent act would have significantly …
Do Law Enforcement Officers’ Attitudes And Knowledge Impact Their Likelihood Of Administering Naloxone?, Nicole Alexis Gulkis
Do Law Enforcement Officers’ Attitudes And Knowledge Impact Their Likelihood Of Administering Naloxone?, Nicole Alexis Gulkis
PCOM Psychology Dissertations
Law enforcement officers (LEOs) are integral public service providers who have been called upon by government personnel across state and local government bodies to aid in combating the opioid epidemic. As LEOs are often the primary front-line workers who encounter opioid overdose scenarios, more states across the nation are training LEOs to administer naloxone. The emergence of Coronavirus (COVID-19) has complicated LEOs’ involvement with naloxone administration because of shifts in policing strategies and occupational safety procedures. Given the current pandemic, concerns about contraction and transmission of COVID-19 must be considered for LEOs working in the frontlines of these concurrent public …

Inventory Of Cognitive Distortions: Validation Of A Measure Of Cognitive Distortions In A Forensic Sample, Eguono Voke Akpoduado
PCOM Psychology Dissertations
Statistics suggest that crime is occurring at a startling rate and recidivism is a persistent problem in the American criminal justice system. Past research revealed that treatment focused on challenging criminogenic thinking aided in reducing recidivism. Hence, the purpose of this study was to examine cognitive distortions used by criminals and to enhance evidence-based psychotherapy focused on challenging criminogenic cognitions. This study explored the psychometric properties of a self-report inventory of cognitive distortions using a forensic sample and examined overall differences in levels of cognitive distortions. Participants were recruited through social networking sites. Measures were the Inventory of Cognitive Distortions …
Administrators’ Perspectives On Discipline Interventions For Prekindergarten Through Second Grade Students, Arlene Nicole Moore
Administrators’ Perspectives On Discipline Interventions For Prekindergarten Through Second Grade Students, Arlene Nicole Moore
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
The problem addressed in this study was that although administrators in a rural northeastern Maryland school district are complying with state Senate Bill 651 by not suspending students in prekindergarten through second grade, administrators continue to struggle with preventing severe offenses from happening and reducing office referrals. The conceptual framework was based on Hannigan and Hannigan’s alternative discipline framework. The conceptual framework focused on administrators’ beliefs, implementation of discipline practices, and intervention use. The research question concentrated on administrators’ perspectives about exclusionary discipline and interventions to prevent severe behaviors. In this basic qualitative study, data were collected through semistructured interviews …
The Relationship Of Diversity Education On Perceptions Of Criminal Justice Majors, Deborah Palicia
The Relationship Of Diversity Education On Perceptions Of Criminal Justice Majors, Deborah Palicia
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
AbstractIn a world of ever-changing demographics, it is imperative that criminal justice practitioners acquire the knowledge and skills needed to effectively interact with the communities they serve. The purpose of this nonexperimental study was to ascertain the relationship between perceptions of diversity of undergraduate criminal justice majors at a Northeastern college who had taken a diversity course to those who had not. Bandura’s social cognitive theory guided this study. Data were collected using McMorris’ Perceptions of Criminality survey with a purposive nonprobability sample of 72 criminal justice majors at a Northeastern college who were 18 years of age or older. …
The Statistical Significance Of Juvenile Delinquency And Learning Disabilities, Collette Erica Scandrett
The Statistical Significance Of Juvenile Delinquency And Learning Disabilities, Collette Erica Scandrett
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Juvenile delinquency and recidivism have been consistent issues that seem to continually produce substantial numbers. The purpose of this quantitative study was to examine learning disabilities among juveniles and determine their statistical significance to delinquency and recidivism. Durkheim’s theory of anomie and Merton’s anomie/strain theory were used as the theoretical framework to guide the study. Archived cases for 15,900 juveniles, 2,633 of whom were learning disabled, were collected from the South Carolina Department of Juvenile Justice and the South Carolina Department of Education. To provide additional context, age, race, and sex were also analyzed. Chi-square tests were used to analyze …
Child Welfare Workers’ Development Of Cultural Competency For Clients In Poverty, Rachel Armstead
Child Welfare Workers’ Development Of Cultural Competency For Clients In Poverty, Rachel Armstead
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Children of families living in poverty are at a higher risk of being victims of child maltreatment than children of families not living in poverty. Many families involved in the child welfare system live in poverty and have low socioeconomic status. The National Association of Social Workers requires all social workers to have a level of cultural awareness, knowledge, and skill to engage clients from diverse cultures. The purpose of this qualitative study was to explore child welfare workers’ understanding of cultural competence and their implementation of culturally sensitive practices as they engage clients living in poverty. Bacote’s cultural competence …
Disparities In The Sentencing Of African American Men In Wayne County, Michigan, Brian Banks
Disparities In The Sentencing Of African American Men In Wayne County, Michigan, Brian Banks
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
AbstractThe ability of judges in the U.S. criminal justice system to administer penalties based on a defendant’s socioeconomic status has resulted in a disproportionate number of African Americans receiving harsher penalties than those of other racial groups and socioeconomic statuses. Currently, there is little evidence demonstrating the effectiveness of harsher sentencing of defendants with lower socioeconomic statuses in preventing crime or lowering recidivism, but more work is needed to clarify what sentencing factors judges use. The purpose of this qualitative study was to explore the factors that Wayne County, Michigan, judges used during the sentencing process of criminal defendants, along …

Influence Of Military Culture On Resilience In Survivors Of Military Sexual Trauma, Rebeka Athena Ives
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Military sexual trauma (MST) is a phenomenon that is in the spotlight currently. More and more service members are coming forward to report their MST stories. Experts have found that MST survivors endure numerous psychological, physical, emotional, and career challenges. Their symptoms have been found to be more severe than those of other types of combat-related trauma, and many end up taking their own lives due to the severity of their symptoms. Researchers have found that resilience varies from culture to culture, and understanding how research impacts an individual’s resilience is key in creating the best treatment possible. There is …
Social Workers’ Role In School Discipline Of Black Male Students, Teresa L. Cooper
Social Workers’ Role In School Discipline Of Black Male Students, Teresa L. Cooper
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
School administrators enforce various forms of school discipline, including office referrals, suspensions, and expulsions, as strategies to maintain safe learning environments for students and staff. Over four decades of research indicate Black male students experience more consequences and receive tougher school discipline than their peers of other races. School discipline potentially causes adverse outcomes for students. Schools employ social workers to support behavior and academic needs of students. The purpose of this phenomenological study was to explore lived experiences of school social workers in their role in school discipline of Black male students. The theoretical framework used for this study …
Effects Of Expungement Laws And Public Perception On Employers’ Attitudes Toward Hiring Wrongfully Convicted Individuals, Tija Lashon Hopkins
Effects Of Expungement Laws And Public Perception On Employers’ Attitudes Toward Hiring Wrongfully Convicted Individuals, Tija Lashon Hopkins
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
AbstractMany studies have been conducted with a focus on wrongful convictions, but few have been conducted that were focused on the effects of wrongful convictions on hiring managers when it comes to issues of employment for exonerates. Criminal background checks are frequently a part of the hiring process, and hiring managers may lack knowledge or awareness of issues facing wrongfully convicted individuals in terms of record expungement and sealing. Simultaneously, public perception may hinder hiring managers’ desire to extend employment offers to exonerates, as hiring managers might fear reprisal from customers. The purpose of this qualitative study was to explore …

The Impact Of Wrongful Death Lawsuits On Police Officers, Richard Kevin Powers
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Law enforcement has become known as one of the most stressful occupations. Stress can have negative impacts on police officers’ professional careers and their personal life. This qualitative research revealed the unseen pressure of wrongful death lawsuits involving police officers, especially those cleared of any criminal wrongdoings. The study explored the police officers' perceptions while gaining knowledge from their lived experiences of how wrongful death lawsuits impacted them professionally and personally. This qualitative study was guided by the person-in-environment theory, which means that the environment can affect the police officer. In return, the police officer can affect the environment. The …
Underprosecution Too, Michal Buchhandler-Raphael
Underprosecution Too, Michal Buchhandler-Raphael
University of Richmond Law Review
This Article makes two main contributions to existing literature. First, it asserts that in deciding whether to pursue sexual assault charges, prosecutors should not rely on the convictability standard. Assessing evidentiary sufficiency in sexual assault cases through the lens of a hypothetical jury is misguided because it incorporates a myriad of jurors’ extralegal considerations of victims’ behaviors, consisting of racialized, gendered, class, status and other prejudices and biases against victims.35 Declining to prosecute sexual assault based on the convictability standard not only perpetuates unwarranted misconceptions about certain victims, but also reinforces their marginalization by exacerbating the legal system’s unequal and …

Mid-Western Educational Researcher
In the United States, national and state standardized assessments have become a metric for measuring student learning and high-quality learning environments. As the COVID-19 pandemic offered a multitude of learning modalities (e.g., hybrid, socially distanced face-to-face instruction, virtual environment), it becomes critical to examine how this learning disruption influenced elementary mathematic performance. This study tested for differences in mathematics performance on fourth grade standardized tests before and during COVID-19 in a case study of a rural Ohio school district using the Measure of Academic Progress (MAP) mathematics test. A two-way ANOVA showed that fourth- grade MAP mathematics scores were statistically …
Leader Labeling Of Employees Within Organizations: Descriptions, Daily Patterns, And Contextual Factors, Erin B. Lunday
Leader Labeling Of Employees Within Organizations: Descriptions, Daily Patterns, And Contextual Factors, Erin B. Lunday
Browse all Theses and Dissertations
This study explored how formally assigned, organizational leaders perceive their employees using an explanatory sequential mixed-method approach. Applying the tropes associated with labeling theory (i.e., the perceptual frame within the labeling process) and positive organizational elements (i.e., positive deviance and positive leadership), the research determined what potential labels leaders assign to employees they supervise, examined the degree to which self-assessed positive leaders assign more positive descriptors, and identified contextual factors that influence the leaders’ labeling process. As part of an eligibility process for the study, leaders completed a positive leader self-assessment (n = 62), of which a sample (n = …
Legitimizing Lies, Courtney M. Cox
Legitimizing Lies, Courtney M. Cox
Faculty Scholarship
Lies are everywhere today. This scourge of misinformation raises difficult questions about how the law can and should respond to falsehoods. Legal discourse has traditionally focused on the law’s choice between penalizing and tolerating lying. But this traditional framing vastly oversimplifies the law’s actual and potential responses. Using trade secrets as a case study, this Article shows that the law sometimes accepts lies as a legitimate option for fulfilling legal requirements and may even require lies in increasingly common circumstances.
Commonly supposed legal and moral commitments against lying do not undermine this reality. To the contrary, the Article reveals that …
Housing The Decarcerated: Covid-19, Abolition & The Right To Housing, Norrinda Brown
Housing The Decarcerated: Covid-19, Abolition & The Right To Housing, Norrinda Brown
Faculty Scholarship
The coronavirus pandemic revealed the need to advance the right to housing and abolition movements. The need for advancements in both spaces was no more painfully apparent than among the recently decarcerated population. Securing housing for the recently decarcerated is particularly difficult due to the “culture of exclusion” that has long pervaded subsidized housing policy, enabled by a patchwork of federal laws, including the Anti-Drug Abuse Act (ADA) of 1988 and the Supreme Court’s ruling in HUD v. Rucker. The culture of exclusion is arbitrated by local housing authorities and works on three levels: eligibility, enforcement, and set asides. As …
Murder And Massacre In Seventeenth Century England, Andrew Quesenberry
Murder And Massacre In Seventeenth Century England, Andrew Quesenberry
Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects
Religion was almost always involved in murder and massacre during seventeenth century England, if not in its content, then at least in its interpretation. This work will support this assertion by examining multiple case studies of murder in seventeenth century England, which will simultaneously give the reader a more complete picture of the nature of homicide during the period. Specifically, the case studies consist of both homicides and infanticides, and explore the relation of the Devil to violent crime in seventeenth century England.
Mapping Religious Sites In China: A Research Note, Jackie Henke, Fenggang Yang
Mapping Religious Sites In China: A Research Note, Jackie Henke, Fenggang Yang
Department of Sociology Faculty Publications
Drawing from visual studies scholarship, we highlight current and persistent critiques of sociological visualization, note recent developments in visualization tools for sociologists, and propose how sociologists can be reflective about their visualization choices. As a case study, we outline the visualization development and selection process in our project of mapping Chinese religious venues. We explain the visualization challenges we faced, the visual biases we hoped to manage, the strengths and limitations of various visualization methods we identified, and how we selected visualizations for varying research queries. In addition, we provide a list of considerations for fellow sociologists working to visualize …
White Teacher Attitudes Towards Their Experiences With Anti-Racist Initiatives, Rebecca Frances Reaume
White Teacher Attitudes Towards Their Experiences With Anti-Racist Initiatives, Rebecca Frances Reaume
Wayne State University Dissertations
The attitudes of white teachers become a critically important aspect of racism and its dismantling. White teachers work within the institutions that have power to inspire and empower students and they have the tendency to hold the structures of the dominant society within their behaviours and actions. This study embraces a mixed method research design through surveys and semi-structured interviews to explore the attitudes that white teachers have towards their experiences with anti-racist initiatives. Teachers are able to either replicate and sustain social patterns of white hegemony or act as agents of change in combat of racism. As a force …
