The Use Of Information Technology In The Activities Of Law Enforcement Agencies: A Comparative Legal Analysis, Islamov Muzaffar Rasulovich Feb 2022

The Use Of Information Technology In The Activities Of Law Enforcement Agencies: A Comparative Legal Analysis, Islamov Muzaffar Rasulovich

ProAcademy

The article considers the use of information technologies in the activities of law enforcement agencies: a comparative legal analysis with such countries as Germany, the USA, Korea, the Russian Federation. The global development of world civilization at the present stage of development of all areas and directions of human activity is determined, first of all, by the effectiveness of its information support. The economic, financial and political life of states, their prosperity and security largely depend on this. The activities of law enforcement agencies are associated with the processing of large volumes of various information, which, in modern conditions, requires …

Assessing Undergraduates Social Competence On Social Media In Nigeria, 'Niran Adetoro Prof, Benedict Ifeanyi Okike

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

Undergraduates are known to be early adopters and users of social media and are socially competent online as against offline. The study sought to determine the social competence of students as exhibited on social media against the background of a growing decline in undergraduates’ offline social relevance. Using survey research design of correlative type, 850 undergraduates in similar faculties in two selected Universities in South west Nigeria were selected using multi-stage sampling. Questionnaire was used to collect data; reliability score of (α = 0.82) was derived for social competence on social media and (α = 0.88) for students’ use of …

The Status Of Women In Utah Politics: A 2022 Update, Hannah Payne, Marin Christensen, Susan R. Madsen, Kim Buesser, Lindsey Palmer

Marketing and Strategy Faculty Publications

Although Utah has a rich heritage of women’s involvement in voting, advocacy, and various types of political involvement, Utah has lagged behind most states in terms of women running for and serving in elected political roles for decades. To track progress, the Utah Women & Leadership Project (UWLP) began reporting on the status of women in Utah politics in 2014, with updates in 2017, 2021, and now 2022. Although strides have been made in increasing the number of women serving in political roles in recent years, there is still work to be done. Research continues to confirm that when both …

Drawing The Cyber Baseline: The Applicability Of Existing International Law To The Governance Of Information And Communication Technologies, Dapo Akande, Antonio Coco, Talita De Souza Dias Feb 2022

Drawing The Cyber Baseline: The Applicability Of Existing International Law To The Governance Of Information And Communication Technologies, Dapo Akande, Antonio Coco, Talita De Souza Dias

International Law Studies

"Cyberspace" is often treated as a new domain of State activity in international legal discourse. This has led to the assumption that for international law to apply to cyber operations carried out by States or non-State actors, "cyber-specific" State practice and opinio juris must be demonstrated. This article challenges that assumption on five different bases. First, it argues that rules of general international law are generally applicable to all domains, areas, or types of State activity. In their interpretation and application to purported new domains, limitations to their scope of application cannot be presumed. Second, this article demonstrates that the …

Violent Victimization Among Immigrants: Using The National Violent Death Reporting System To Examine Foreign-Born Homicide Victimization In The United States, Kayla R. Freemon, Melissa A. Gutierrez, Jessica Huff, Hyunjung Cheon, David Choate, Taylor Cox, Charles M. Katz Feb 2022

Violent Victimization Among Immigrants: Using The National Violent Death Reporting System To Examine Foreign-Born Homicide Victimization In The United States, Kayla R. Freemon, Melissa A. Gutierrez, Jessica Huff, Hyunjung Cheon, David Choate, Taylor Cox, Charles M. Katz

Criminology and Criminal Justice Faculty Publications

Limited research attention has focused on homicides involving foreign-born victims. Using data from the National Violent Death Reporting System, we examined 9428 homicides that occurred in 2017 in the United States across 32 states and D.C. Approximately 8% of homicide victims were foreign-born. Homicide victimization rates were substantially lower for foreign-born persons, compared to U.S.-born persons. However, foreign-born persons from Honduras, El Salvador, and Jamaica had a substantially higher risk of homicide victimization. Notably, few homicides involving foreign-born victims were gang- or drug-trade-related. With the growing number of immigrants in the United States, policy and prevention efforts should be guided …

Student Government National Network, Alexander Chiarelott Feb 2022

Student Government National Network, Alexander Chiarelott

Honors Projects

My project is the creation and utilization of the Student Government National Network. This is a joint effort between many student leaders from around the country, but the idea for it was started by me and the former BGSU USG President Harrison Carter. My specific role in the development phase of this organization has been to bring in the student leaders in my network, as well as to consider the long-term marketing and financial routes we want the organization to take. I will be developing the marketing and economic plans for this organization, which have a major bearing on how …

Intersections Of Masculinity, Culturally Relevant Factors, And Intimate Partner Violence Perpetration Among Asian American Men, Jason Z. Kyler-Yano Feb 2022

Intersections Of Masculinity, Culturally Relevant Factors, And Intimate Partner Violence Perpetration Among Asian American Men, Jason Z. Kyler-Yano

Dissertations and Theses

Intimate partner violence (IPV) by men against women is a devastating social problem that is experienced by over a quarter of women in their lifetimes (Tjaden & Thoennes, 2000). IPV in Asian American communities is a prevalent problem that is likely influenced by both patriarchal gender role norms as well as culturally salience factors that are distinct to Asian Americans. Given the influence of norms and values on gendered power dynamics and racial power dynamics in the U.S., it is important to understand the intersections of gender and culture in Asian American men's masculine role norms and IPV perpetration. This …

The Ballad Of Hicks Carmichael: Law, Music, And Popular Justice In Urban Appalachia, William Davenport Mercer Feb 2022

The Ballad Of Hicks Carmichael: Law, Music, And Popular Justice In Urban Appalachia, William Davenport Mercer

Scholarly Works

This article examines a rare folk ballad to revisit an 1888 Tennessee trial that newspapers referred to as the fastest in the country in which the death penalty was involved. If we look at this event using court records and newspapers, it tells a regrettably common story of a court under pressure from the populace skirting the protections of law. However, if we consider the trial as a performative endeavor, we can rightly consider other performative events, like folk songs, not as reflective of official events but as equivalents that help provide insight into the larger motives behind the court’s …

Race And Hedge Funds, Yan Lu, Narayan Y. Naik, Melvyn Teo Feb 2022

Race And Hedge Funds, Yan Lu, Narayan Y. Naik, Melvyn Teo

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

We find that minority operated funds deliver higher alphas, Sharpe ratios, and information ratios than do non-minority operated funds. Moreover, minority fund managers attended more selective schools, worked at higher status investment banks, and are more likely to hold post-graduate degrees. Yet, minority managers raise less start-up capital and attract lower investor flows. Racial homophily fuels investors' appetite for non-minority funds. To address endogeneity, we leverage on an event study of minority manager fund transitions and an instrumental variable analysis that exploits racial imprinting during childhood. The results suggest that minorities face significant barriers to entry in the hedge fund …

Policing And Homelessness, Michael Ernest Bridges Feb 2022

Policing And Homelessness, Michael Ernest Bridges

Masters Theses

This research examines the barriers that exist between law enforcement and the homeless population of Lawrence, Kansas. Based on the criminalization of certain homeless practices and the treatment of homeless people by government officials, persons experiencing homelessness are less likely to report crimes to the proper authorities. Being the case, law enforcement methodology must change to a community-oriented policing style in order to create open lines of communication between law enforcers and this unique community. This study examined the homeless population's hesitancy to contact the police when they were in need of assistance and compared the results to both how …

Understanding Chilling Effects, Jonathan W. Penney Feb 2022

Understanding Chilling Effects, Jonathan W. Penney

Minnesota Law Review Vols. 106:2 onward (2021-present)

With digital surveillance and censorship on the rise, the amount of data available unprecedented, and corporate and governmental actors increasingly employing emerging technologies like artificial intelligence and facial recognition technology for surveillance and data analytics, concerns about “chilling effects,” that is, the capacity for these activities to “chill” or deter people from exercising their rights and freedoms, have taken on greater urgency and importance. Yet, there remains a clear dearth in systematic theoretical and empirical work points. This has left significant gaps in understanding. This Article has attempted to fill that void, synthesizing theoretical and empirical insights from law, privacy, …
