Human trafficking is a global problem that involves the exploitation of people for profit through the means of force, fraud, or coercion.1 It takes a variety of forms, including forced labor, debt bondage, domestic servitude, and sexual exploitation.2 Systemic inequalities, such as mass displacement, extreme poverty, and lack of access to education and job opportunities are examples of contributing factors that can fuel trafficking of vulnerable populations.3 While the scale of trafficking in persons is difficult to determine, estimates suggest that there were over 40 million victims worldwide in 2016.4 In fact, during the COVID-19 pandemic, …

The Empty Promises Of Diversity Mou's: How The Fcc Can Strengthen Commitments To Racial Equity, Jeleesa Omala Apr 2022

The Empty Promises Of Diversity Mou's: How The Fcc Can Strengthen Commitments To Racial Equity, Jeleesa Omala

Journal of Civil Rights and Economic Development

(Excerpt)

African Americans have been systematically disenfranchised from nearly all sectors of American society since the country’s founding. As such, African Americans do not just perceive the problem of racial discrimination as a matter of personal prejudice but also a matter of survival. Without access to fundamental resources like higher education, healthcare, and economic opportunity, the quality of Black life decreases astronomically. The nation begins to equate being Black with being “less than,” and continues to disinvest in Black populations, which signals to Black people that their lives do not matter.

Nevertheless, determined Black entrepreneurs continue to fight to expand …

Solving Crimes With 23andme: Dna Databases And The Future Of Law Enforcement, Meghan Mcloughlin

Journal of Civil Rights and Economic Development

(Excerpt)

“It could never happen to me though, right?”

Sitting on our comfortable couches in our secure homes and watching news stories about people who have lost loved ones to the most terrible, violent crimes, we think to ourselves: “That’s awful for them, but it won’t happen to me.” But what if it did?

Becoming a victim of a violent crime or loving someone who becomes a victim of a crime in the United States is not uncommon. In 2016, 2.9 million people in the United States were victims of at least one “violent crime”—crimes defined by their inherent violence, …

Rethinking Recidivism, Grace Higbie, Beck Hansman, Michael Willner, Charlie O'Gorman Apr 2022

Rethinking Recidivism, Grace Higbie, Beck Hansman, Michael Willner, Charlie O'Gorman

Undergraduate Research and Engagement Symposium

Prisons are as old as civilization, yet the way incarceration looks has changed over time. One of the biggest changes is the increase of the number of people in prison, influenced significantly by the long-term rise in recidivism, or the tendency for a convicted criminal to reoffend and be re-imprisoned for a similar crime. If more people cycle in and out of the system, then prison populations rise which strains the entire justice system. This paper seeks to address recidivism in two countries with differing rates and approaches to imprisonment: the United States and Norway. We hope to provide actionable …

Drug Court Policy Analysis, Delanie O. Coady Apr 2022

Drug Court Policy Analysis, Delanie O. Coady

Drug courts are specialty courts, implemented sporadically across the United States. The purpose of analyzing drug court policy is to assess their long-term cost and effectiveness. Drug courts in Baltimore City, and Woodbury County, Iowa were both analyzed along with findings from the Office of National Drug Control Policy. It is held that they provide significant annual savings for the jurisdictions that they are implemented in and successfully reduce substance-abuse related recidivism.

Dtap: Drug Treatment Alternative To Prison, Taylor Van Ostrand Apr 2022

Dtap: Drug Treatment Alternative To Prison, Taylor Van Ostrand

Celebration of Research

This is a policy analysis about drug treatment options compared to prison sentences for multiple-time drug offenders. A policy analysis simply evaluates a framework for whether a policy is effective and if the policy should be implemented and expanded. DTAP provides addicts facing charges another option to be rehabilitated rather than simply punished. DTAP flags individuals that meet the criteria of eligibility through the District Attorneys and have the choice to participate when substances were the contributing factor to their criminal activity. Recidivism rates for prison populations are already exceedingly high but mixed with addiction it becomes a repetitive cycle …

The Adolescent Diversion Project, Chase Mccleskey Apr 2022

The Adolescent Diversion Project, Chase Mccleskey

Celebration of Research

Juvenile incarceration has been a prevalent problem in the United States Criminal Justice System. Once incarcerated, juveniles have much lower high school graduation rates when compared to their peers and higher recidivism rates when compared to their adult counterparts. These two factors reduce a juveniles’ chances of succeeding in the United States substantially. Many solutions have been proposed to fix this issue, however, none have been as successful or as promising as the Adolescent Diversion Project. The Adolescent Diversion Project has been proven to significantly reduce recidivism rates in juvenile offenders and to be cost-effective. For these reasons, the Adolescent …

Mental Health Professionals Serving The Military: Who Has Access?, Nicole Marie Arcuri Sanders, Kellie Forziat-Pytel

Journal of Counseling Research and Practice

Licensed counselors are underrepresented as mental health professionals (MHPs) servicing military-connected clients (service member/Veterans and their families). Mixed-methods research, conducted by the authors, highlights key viewpoints of MHPs (counselor, psychologist, and social worker) interested in working with the military and on their level of confidence in working with this population. MHPs’ experiences, perspectives of their profession’s responsibilities to military clients, and their role in comparison to other MHPs is explored.
