Men In Higher Education: A Gender Crisis In The United States?, Ou Lydia Liu, Brent Bridgeman, Daniel Fishtein

Chinese/English Journal of Educational Measurement and Evaluation | 教育测量与评估双语期刊

Men’s significant underrepresentation in U.S. colleges has attracted widespread attention. As of 2021, men make up only 40.5% of the college enrollments. Given the proven economic and social benefits of a college degree, men’s lack of a college degree is projected to generate detrimental effects to the U.S. economy and society, as well as bring missed opportunities for individuals. We review the gender composition at various degree levels, discuss possible impacts of men’s underrepresentation, and analyze underlying reasons of men’s low college enrollment. We also review strategies that institutions use to attract more male applicants. Despite women’s overrepresentation in college …

An Analysis Of The Strengths And Weaknesses Of The Tulsa Remote Program, As An Effective Economic Development Strategy, Kristen J. Padilla Aug 2022

An Analysis Of The Strengths And Weaknesses Of The Tulsa Remote Program, As An Effective Economic Development Strategy, Kristen J. Padilla

Dissertations and Theses

Cities do not exist in a vacuum. They are in constant competition for talented, educated individuals and growing, innovative businesses -even if that competition is not explicit or specific. Traditionally cities have been left with two economic development paths to help diversify their economies: attract talent but without jobs, or attract business but without a strong talent pool. However, due to technological advancements, exacerbated by the pandemic, a new and growing workforce that can work from anywhere has emerged, remote workers. This talent pool shifts traditional economic development attraction strategies from city to industry to city to talent.

Many remote …

The Use Of Text Analytics To Investigate Concepts In Intra- And Inter-Disciplinary Software Piracy Research Inter-Disciplinary Software Piracy Research, Jerald Hughes, Juan A. Chavarria, Francis Andoh-Baidoo

Information Systems Faculty Publications

IS research has linked collaborators from diverse domains. IS research requires selecting and addressing an appropriate intradisciplinary or interdisciplinary scope. Identifying gaps in the current literature and deciding when and how collaborations among different disciplines may be fruitful poses challenges. We propose a process to analyze a corpus of documents from any topic, to identify potential collaboration areas.

A text analytics process is used to find areas of commonality and exclusivity among questions addressed in existing IS work by analyzing abstracts in papers from multiple disciplines studying 'software piracy.' We use term-term co-occurrence to find all the terms used in …

Boosting Attendance Through Relationships, Mia Ferguson Aug 2022

Boosting Attendance Through Relationships, Mia Ferguson

Masters Projects

Research has shown that students who feel a sense of belonging or personal connectedness in school have higher academic achievement. This project is to help my school Westfield Preparatory High School with its attendance issues. Since COVID, we have struggled to make daily attendance, so I chose this research project to give me better insight based on the issues staff and students gave for chronic absenteeism. I created an in-service for teachers to let them know how important teacher-student relationships are. During this in-service, I will present my research to teachers and present an academic coaching program where teachers will …

The Economic Impact Of Cyberattacks In The United States, Habibullah Asadi

Student Theses

In recent years, the global economy has been beset by cyber-attacks. These events disrupt business and governmental operations, large and small, and include broad-horizon attacks on infrastructure and pointed network takeovers. The attacks can include malicious online activities directed at stealing financial and intellectual property or, manipulating, destroying, and denying access to critical information. Despite increased awareness of these challenges, the victimization of private and public networks continues, and the economic impacts mount daily. This research will present the economic impact of cyberattacks on United States businesses and governmental agencies.

Middle And High School Resource Officers’ Perceptions Of Zero-Tolerance Policies’ Impact On Economically Disadvantaged Minority Students: A Multicase Study, Ashley Simone Proctor Aug 2022

Middle And High School Resource Officers’ Perceptions Of Zero-Tolerance Policies’ Impact On Economically Disadvantaged Minority Students: A Multicase Study, Ashley Simone Proctor

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

The purpose of this multicase study was to understand school resource officers’ (SROs’) perceptions of zero-tolerance policies’ impact on economically disadvantaged minority middle and high school students in 10 North Carolina public schools. The theory guiding this study was Gibbs’s deterrence theory because deterrence ideals are the basis of exclusionary disciplinary policies. The theory states that punishment reduces crime or, as it relates to zero tolerance, reduces the likelihood of discipline infractions. The central question for the current research was “How does the implementation of zero-tolerance policies promote or deter the disciplinary referrals of minority and economically disadvantaged students through …

Cognitive Abilities Of Criminal Justice Leaders, Dustin Joe Addison Aug 2022

Cognitive Abilities Of Criminal Justice Leaders, Dustin Joe Addison

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

The purpose of this applied study was to help in the understanding of how stress has a significant impact on criminal justice leadership. The research design with the applied study was multimethod. The multimethod design correlated interviews, surveys, and archival data to understand the correlation between stress events and perceived cognitive abilities. The central questions within this study were related to prolonged exposure to high stress and whether criminal justice leaders have a lower cognitive ability than those not exposed to high-stress situations. With the malleability of the human brain allowed by neuroplasticity, do criminal justice leaders have altered abilities …

Exploring African American Males' Experiences With Police In Southern California: A Phenomenological Study, Barbara R. Ray Aug 2022

Exploring African American Males' Experiences With Police In Southern California: A Phenomenological Study, Barbara R. Ray

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

Black males are treated unfairly and killed more by law enforcement than any other group. The current study sought to explore how Black males in San Bernardino County, CA, describe their lived experiences with law enforcement as framed by the tents of critical race theory. To achieve this aim, a phenomenological research study was conducted, using semistructured interviews with Black males. Qualitative data were analyzed using thematic analysis. The key themes identified included (a) centrality of bias in experiences negatively shaped regard of police, (b) as tools, body-worn cameras do little to increase security or legitimacy, (c) limited interactions-limited law …

A Phenomenological Study Examining The Experiences Of Public School Teachers Who Provide Support For Chronically Absent Students At The Elementary School Level, Robert Lenn Ralston Aug 2022

A Phenomenological Study Examining The Experiences Of Public School Teachers Who Provide Support For Chronically Absent Students At The Elementary School Level, Robert Lenn Ralston

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

The purpose of this transcendental phenomenological study was to explore the experiences of public schoolteachers who provided support for chronically absent students at the elementary school level. The theory guiding this study is Ryan and Deci's (1980) self-determination theory (SDT). The SDT explains extrinsic and intrinsic motivation sources and their roles in social development through three general constructs: competence, autonomy, and relatedness. A screening survey was used to identify 12 elementary teachers from different schools in the southeastern United States who have taught children who were chronically absent. Data was collected through individual interviews, four focus groups, and an e-mailed …

Passing The Mic: Teachers' Conceptions Of Student Voice In Urban Classrooms, Sharon E. Hopkins Aug 2022

Passing The Mic: Teachers' Conceptions Of Student Voice In Urban Classrooms, Sharon E. Hopkins

Impact: A Journal of Community and Cultural Inquiry in Education

In education there have been many reforms over the years that have asked teachers to be self-reflexive about their pedagogical practices as well as to develop their own articulation of the true purpose of education. One such reform has been centered around the term “student voice.” While there are many different theoretical interpretations and practical implementations of the term, this study sought to identify how teachers in an urban setting conceive of the term, as well as how they described their own facilitation in practice. This is particularly important for traditionally marginalized students who often feel disempowered in school. Using …

Emancipatory Nursing Praxis: Applying The Social Justice Theory To Implement Harm Reduction In Prison Substance Use Disorder, Veronica A. Holmes

Theoretical Foundation in Advanced Practice Nursing

The United States has the highest rate of incarceration in the world. Inmates suffer from chronic health conditions and substance use disorder (SUD) at a higher rate than the rest of the population yet, often do not receive sufficient medical care during incarceration. The theory of Emancipatory Nursing Praxis (ENP) calls for the integration of social justice within the profession of nursing. This theory provides a framework in which nurses can awaken and serve as agents of change, working to ameliorate issues of systemic oppression. Harm reduction refers to policies, programs, and strategies aimed at reducing the negative health, economic, …
