Mapping Religious Sites In China: A Research Note, Jackie Henke, Fenggang Yang
Mapping Religious Sites In China: A Research Note, Jackie Henke, Fenggang Yang
Department of Sociology Faculty Publications
Drawing from visual studies scholarship, we highlight current and persistent critiques of sociological visualization, note recent developments in visualization tools for sociologists, and propose how sociologists can be reflective about their visualization choices. As a case study, we outline the visualization development and selection process in our project of mapping Chinese religious venues. We explain the visualization challenges we faced, the visual biases we hoped to manage, the strengths and limitations of various visualization methods we identified, and how we selected visualizations for varying research queries. In addition, we provide a list of considerations for fellow sociologists working to visualize …
Explicating Consumer Adoption Of Wearable Technologies: A Case Of Smartwatches From The Asean Perspective, Veerisa Chotiyaputta, Donghee Shin
Explicating Consumer Adoption Of Wearable Technologies: A Case Of Smartwatches From The Asean Perspective, Veerisa Chotiyaputta, Donghee Shin
All Works
This research aims to determine the key antecedent factors in consumers' adoption of and their intention to recommend smartwatch wearable technology. The proposed research model combines the current technology acceptance and innovation diffusion theories with perceived aesthetic and perceived privacy risk to explain individuals' smartwatch adoption and subsequent recommendation to other people. Based on a sample of 299 completed individual online surveys, the research employed partial least squares (a variance-based analysis method) for the model and hypotheses testing. The results showed some similarities as well as differences from the previous literature. The study found that performance expectancy, habit, and perceived …
On The Use Of Allen’S Interval Algebra In The Coordination Of Resource Consumption By Transactional Business Processes, Zakaria Maamar, Fadwa Yahya, Lassaad Ben Ammar
On The Use Of Allen’S Interval Algebra In The Coordination Of Resource Consumption By Transactional Business Processes, Zakaria Maamar, Fadwa Yahya, Lassaad Ben Ammar
All Works
This paper presents an approach to coordinate the consumption of resources by transactional business processes. Resources are associated with consumption properties known as unlimited, limited, limited-but-extensible, shareable, and non-shareable restricting their availabilities at consumption-time. And, processes are associated with transactional properties known as pivot, retriable, and compensatable restricting their execution outcomes in term of either success or failure. To consider the intrinsic characteristics of both consumption properties and transactional properties when coordinating resource consumption by processes, the approach adopts Allen’s interval algebra through different time-interval relations like before, overlaps, and during to set up the coordination, which should lead to …
Wattpad As An Online Medium For Contemporary Folklore, Alisha Tess Helton
Wattpad As An Online Medium For Contemporary Folklore, Alisha Tess Helton
Online Theses and Dissertations
This project focuses its discussion within the discipline of folklore by identifying Wattpad.com as a contemporary medium of online folkloric content. Wattpad provides its users with a text-based—and sometimes multimodal—means of communication via its interface that mimics traditional communication as we know it—a means founded in orality, literacy, and the archive. Wattpad users are creating new folktales that are nuanced with elements from Wattpad’s archive, which characterizes contemporary online folklore in a way that has not been fully explored. This project serves to identify the past and present discourses that inform such a discussion while also explaining the intricacies of …
Creating Themed Accessible Spaces Through Hospitality Design, Sidney Wolf
Creating Themed Accessible Spaces Through Hospitality Design, Sidney Wolf
Electronic Theses and Dissertations, 2020-2023
This thesis summarizes available literature about the individual requirements and specific design attributes needed to understand, apply, develop, and design a themed hotel with an emphasis in accessibility and inclusivity. This thesis contains a visual project and design guide that focuses on creating a themed space that offers modern means of accessibility for mobility aids, or for those who are deaf, hard of hearing, blind, or partially sighted. The guide summarizes literature on existing codes and explores other resources to adapt them to create an inclusive narrative environment. The visual project applies the material found in the guide and produces …
Visual Communication Design Collaboration With Occupational Therapy To Create Health Literacy Projects For Community Needs, Elizabeth Shirrell, Daniel Verbit, Monique C. Chabot
Visual Communication Design Collaboration With Occupational Therapy To Create Health Literacy Projects For Community Needs, Elizabeth Shirrell, Daniel Verbit, Monique C. Chabot
Kanbar College Faculty Papers
Low levels of health literacy directly correlate to increased mortality rates, decreased health outcomes and overall poorer quality of life. Many social determinants of health can place someone at a higher risk of low health literacy and the negative consequences of decreased skills in this area. Health literacy is a complex task that requires a multi-modal approach and interventions within a variety of spheres of influence in someone’s life. To address this issue in underinvested communities within their own city, teams of Visual Communication Design and Occupational Therapy students, with the support of their faculty and a librarian, worked together …

Achieving Sustainability Through Reducing Risks During Architecture Design Process: A Lean Management Perspective, Sherouk Abdelrehim, Ayman Ahmed Ezzat Othman
Achieving Sustainability Through Reducing Risks During Architecture Design Process: A Lean Management Perspective, Sherouk Abdelrehim, Ayman Ahmed Ezzat Othman
Architectural Engineering
The construction industry, as one of the largest industries in the world, plays a critical role in achieving national and international social and economic sustainable development goals. Socially, it is concerned with delivering long-term projects that turn client and end-user requirements into designs that specify technical aspects, functional specific requirements, and standards of quality. Economically, the construction industry contributes to a country's gross domestic product (GDP) by creating jobs and providing the country's infrastructure. the construction industry's nature is more vulnerable than other industries. This is believed to be due to the complex and dynamic nature of construction projects, as …
Sbms: A Visual Exploration Of Liberian Identity, Gabriel B. Tait
Sbms: A Visual Exploration Of Liberian Identity, Gabriel B. Tait
The Asbury Journal
This article explores the use of visuals by missionaries and social scientists to communicate their encounters in sub-Saharan Africa. It offers an alternative perspective by incorporating the Sight Beyond My Sight (SBMS) visual research methodology created by Gabriel Tait. SBMS is a participant research method that employs photography as a way to understand culture and identity. The implications of this body of work, and the method it provides, presents a much-needed contextual lens for missionaries, visual ethnographers, and general persons who are interested in communicating their contexts in partnership with the cultures they are encountering and impacting. The implication of …
