No “Box To Be Checked”: Environmental Justice In Modern Legal Practice, Clifford J. Villa
No “Box To Be Checked”: Environmental Justice In Modern Legal Practice, Clifford J. Villa
Faculty Scholarship
For nearly thirty years, environmental justice has been part of our civic conversation and included in the mission of federal agencies. But while public attention to environmental justice has waxed and waned over time, environmental justice principles have endured and developed into rules of law. This development may be expected to continue and accelerate with recent events such as the nationwide outcry after the police killing of George Floyd in 2020, the disparate impacts of COVID-19 on people of color, and the express priorities of the Biden administration. This paper seeks to help legal practitioners and other interested parties comprehend …

Small Suburbs, Large Lots: How The Scale Of Land-Use Regulation Affects Housing Affordability, Equity, And The Climate, Eric Biber, Giulia Gualco-Nelson, Nicholas Marantz, Moira O’Neill
Utah Law Review
Housing costs in major coastal metropolitan areas nationwide have skyrocketed, impacting people, the economy, and the environment. Landuse regulation, controlled primarily at the local level, plays a major role in determining housing production. In response to this mounting housing crisis, scholars, policymakers, and commentators are debating whether greater state involvement in local land-use decision-making is the best path forward.
We argue here that there are good reasons to believe that continuing on the current path—with local control of land-use regulation as it is— will lead to persistent underproduction of housing. The benefits of housing production are primarily regional, including improved …

Evaluating Science Communication Efforts And Citizen Scientists' Knowledge Of, Attitude Toward, And Behavioral Intentions Related To The North American River Otter, Karlee D. Jewell
Cal Poly Humboldt theses and projects
Citizen Science (CS) and scientific visual, spatial, and graphic art projects have the potential to engage community members, provide opportunities for advances in scientific literacy, increase interest in science and local environmental knowledge, and elevate pro-environmental attitudes. CS depends upon public participation, and motivation for participation is varied, including participants’ desire to learn something new or contribute to science or scientific knowledge. An effective CS project will be rooted in an understanding of individuals’ motivations for participation, striving to meet those motivations, and effectively evaluating not only the scientific outputs of the project but also whether participants’ motivations are being …

Objectives: The objectives of the study were to assess knowledge, attitude and practice related to COVID-19 among people; correlate the knowledge, attitude and practice scores related to COVID-19 …
Leadership Strategies To Motivate And Retain Employees In Small And Medium Enterprises, Shirley Jean Doescher
Leadership Strategies To Motivate And Retain Employees In Small And Medium Enterprises, Shirley Jean Doescher
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Organizational leaders find it challenging to determine what leadership strategies motivate and retain employees in their company, especially during a pandemic. Not knowing which leadership strategies would successfully motivate employees leads to higher turnover, less profitability, and higher costs to replace employees. Grounded in transformational leadership theory, the purpose of this multiple case study was to explore strategies corporate leaders use to motivate and retain employees in small and medium businesses (SMEs) in southeastern Wisconsin (WI). Data were collected from semi-structured interviews with eight participants from eight SMEs of southeast WI, as well as analyzing company documents. Yin’s 5-step process …
Exploring The Role Of Intrusive Advising In Community College Students’ Persistence, Carolyn Jordan
Exploring The Role Of Intrusive Advising In Community College Students’ Persistence, Carolyn Jordan
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
AbstractThe role of intrusive advising in the persistence of community college students has not been well-studied even though intrusive advising has been touted as a practice to improve retention in U.S. community colleges. Student retention is important for sustaining community colleges that serve as open admissions institutions because they are increasingly dependent on tuition revenue, especially in an era of reduced state and federal funding. Retaining students also helps improve the educational attainment in the geographic area the community college serves. The purpose of this basic qualitative inquiry was to explore the role of intrusive advising on retaining students. Bandura’s …
The Relationship Between New Foreign Direct Investment And U.S. All Industry Sales, Sherron Alexander Jackson
The Relationship Between New Foreign Direct Investment And U.S. All Industry Sales, Sherron Alexander Jackson
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
In the global production network, multinational corporations can squeeze domestic firms out of local markets. Nationally, economic developers are concerned about all industry sales as a symbol of the economic advantages featured in regional business production. Grounded in ownership, location, and internalization theory, the purpose of this ex post facto study was to examine the relationship between (a) new foreign direct investment (NFDI) for acquisition projects, (b) NFDI for greenfield establishment projects, (c) NFDI for greenfield expansion projects, and (d) all industry sales in the United States. Over the past few decades, prestigious scientific institutions such as The National Science Foundation (NSF) and the National Academy of Sciences have acknowledged the utmost importance of science communication to help improve the general public’s understanding of scientific knowledge. NSF has gone so far as to make “dissemination of research findings to increase scientific literacy” the third most recommended category for research funding priorities, second only to teaching and training, and broadening participation of underrepresented groups (NSB 2011, Skrip 2015). These efforts attest to a growing interest and investment in improving the field of science communication (Druschke and McGreavy 2016); …
The Impact Of Poverty And Gender-Based Disaster Education On Household Preparedness Planning In Male Latino Migrant Workers, Malikah Taylor
The Impact Of Poverty And Gender-Based Disaster Education On Household Preparedness Planning In Male Latino Migrant Workers, Malikah Taylor
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Natural disasters cause catastrophic damage to a community through death, injury, and property loss. Urban areas are predisposed to these events due to their built environment and the dense population of vulnerable groups. Urban male Latino migrant workers are an at-risk population with multiple social determinants of health that should be considered when implementing risk reduction plans. Programs that do not target this entire community only enhance the vulnerability of this group. This study examined the relationship between poverty and household preparedness in this community, controlling for gender. The socioecological model provided the foundation for this retrospective secondary analysis. Statistical …

As environmental crisis looms large, most agree that human reeducation is necessary in order to improve our relationship to the natural environment. Yet, there is currently no comprehensive interdisciplinary philosophy of education for environmental awareness. While there is writing in the field of philosophy of education on ecologizing education and literature which draws connections between aesthetic education and the appreciation of nature, there is little literature on the explicit ways in which aesthetic and art education can inform environmental justice initiatives. This dissertation examines aesthetic and art education’s relationship to the environment and how aesthetics can inform a moral relationship …

Housing Choices Of Myanmar Migrants Working In The Central Business District Of Bangkok, Hsu Yee Win
Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
Urban migrant workers play a vital role in the economic growth of a country. As housing is a fundamental human need that greatly impacts individual and societal well-being, it is crucial to ensure the welfare of urban migrant workers. While several studies have explored the factors that influence urban migrants' housing choices, limited attention has been paid to the spatial distribution of housing and housing choices among urban migrant workers in Thailand. This study aims to fill this gap by examining the housing locations and determinants of housing choices among Myanmar migrants working in the Central Business District (CBD) of …

Urban Tree Canopy (UTC) greatly enhances the livability of cities by reducing urban heat buildup, mitigating stormwater runoff, and filtering airborne particulates, among other ecological services. These benefits, combined with the relative ease of measuring tree cover from aerial imagery, have led many cities to adopt management strategies based on UTC goals. In this study, we conducted canopy analyses for 300 cities in Florida to assess the impacts of development practices, urban forest ordinances, and hurricanes on tree cover. Within the cities sampled, UTC ranged from 5.9 to 68.7% with a median canopy coverage of 32.3% Our results indicate that …

Formulation, Structure, And Applications Of Therapeutic, Amino Acid, And Water-Based Deep Eutectic Solvents, Md Sajjadur Rahman
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
In the design of greener chemicals, deep eutectic solvents (DESs) are considered as one of the most versatile alternative solvents with widespread applications. DESs have the advantages of being nonflammable with negligible vapor pressure compared to traditional solvents. They share many characteristics of ionic liquids, but DESs are cheaper to formulate, typically nontoxic, recyclable, biodegradable, and are suitable for use with biological systems. In my Ph.D. research, three types of emerging and unconventional types of DESs, namely therapeutic DES (THEDES), amino acid-based DES (AADES), and water-based DES (WDES), have been investigated. To formulate these DES easily available and cheaper chemicals, …

Theater And Peacebuilding In Post-Conflict Settings: Participants’ Experiences In The Morning Star Theater Program In South Sudan, Shiphrah Mutungi Akandiinda
Antioch University Dissertations & Theses
This dissertation explores the role of theater for peacebuilding in post-conflict settings through the analysis of experiences of participants in the Morning Star Forum Theater for Peacebuilding in South Sudan. Arts-based activities, including theater, have increasingly gained momentum as viable interventions for peacebuilding in post-conflict zones. Much of the existent research fails to capture the experiences of the theater participants themselves. Using narrative inquiry, this study interviewed 12 community members who participated in the Morning Star Forum Theater event. In particular, this study focused on how experiences of Morning Star Theater events impacted interpersonal growth and relationship-building, thus positively impacting …

Reframing Leadership Narratives Through The African American Lens, Marion Missy Mcgee
Antioch University Dissertations & Theses
Reframing Leadership Narratives through the African American Lens explores the context-rich experiences of Black Museum executives to challenge dominant cultural perspectives of what constitutes a leader. Using critical narrative discourse analysis, this research foregrounds under-told narratives and reveals the leadership practices used to proliferate Black Museums to contrast the lack of racially diverse perspectives in the pedagogy of leadership studies. This was accomplished by investigating the origin stories of African American executives using organizational leadership and social movement theories as analytical lenses for making sense of leaders’ tactics and strategies. Commentary from Black Museum leaders were interspersed with sentiments of …

It’S A Matter Of Trust: Ngāi Tahu Democratic Processes And Māori Pākehā Research Partnership, Janine Joyce, Hine Forsyth
Research outputs 2022 to 2026
The Ngāi Tahu indigenous Māori community of Aotearoa/New Zealand successfully maintained 150 years of legal grievance against the British Crown following the signing of the Treaty of Waitangi and colonization. The importance of women leaders, the guiding role of elders, the long-term commitment to intergenerational health for all tribal members, the democratic processes in the current context for Ngāi Tahu iwi within Aotearoa and engagement with the legal system was crucial in building towards a post-conflict society. Alongside this there were and are creative empowerment processes that nourished cultural vitality. This paper shares a ‘conversational exchange’ about the processes that …

The COVID-19 pandemic introduced many challenges for research scientists: reduction of lab and field observation collection and in-person meetings. These new constraints forced researchers to remote work and virtual networking, dramatically influencing scientific inquiry. Such challenges are compounded for those in early stages of their career, where data collection and networking are vital to be seen as productive. However, during this trying time of remote work, we, as a collective of early-career oceanographers, were actively developing and improving on an already-existent hybrid community of practice. Through our experiences, we believe this type of framework can enhance virtual collaboration to the …

The Influence Of Faculty Peer Network Communication In The Diffusion Of A Centralized Cure, Nicole L. Scheuermann
College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations
Course-based undergraduate research experiences (CUREs) provide students the benefits of undergraduate research participation by incorporating authentic scientific research into laboratory courses. CUREs are a relatively young pedagogy and are therefore innovative. Roger’s (2003) diffusion of innovations (DOI) framework posits that the diffusion of innovations, such as CUREs, is a highly social process. Most existing CURE research has focused on the impacts to students and the critical elements of CURE design. Investigation into instructor peer network communication is largely absent from the existing CURE literature. This study investigates the structure and function of a CURE community – the Malate Dehydrogenase CURE …
Angler’S Sense Of Place As An Indicator For Perceptions Of Vulnerability And Life Satisfaction Relative To Shifting Stock Distributions, Elizabeth Conley
Angler’S Sense Of Place As An Indicator For Perceptions Of Vulnerability And Life Satisfaction Relative To Shifting Stock Distributions, Elizabeth Conley
Open Access Master's Theses
Geographic locations are a fundamental aspect to human life, but their impact on well-being is seldom accounted for and often not formally considered within assessment frameworks to monitor at-risk coastal communities. Climate change continues to warm ocean waters and cause fish stocks to redistribute to untraditional locations, prompting changes in angler behavior and destabilizing the connection they have built with particular places in order to fish successfully. This research evaluates recreational angler’s sense of place in NY, CT, and RI, as an indicator to assess perceptions of vulnerability and life satisfaction in relation to shifting fish stock distributions through a …

Lgbtiq + Identities In Tourism And Leisure Research: A Systematic Qualitative Literature Review, Faith Ong, Oscar Vorobjovas-Pinta, Clifford Lewis
Research outputs 2014 to 2021
Tourism research on the LGBTIQ + communities has grown over the years, entering mainstream discussions as a segment of interest. This growing focus reflects greater societal acceptance and acknowledgement of the systemic inequalities that challenge their rights. The landscape of current scholarship, though important to academic literature, policy and practice, has not been explored. On this premise, and under the umbrella of social sustainability, a systematic qualitative review of scholarship on the LGBTIQ + community and tourism was conducted with Q1- and Q2-ranked travel and tourism journals (Scimago Journal & Country Rank) as a basis. Articles were analysed to identify …
