Together We RISE (Making Excellence Inclusive)
The first sentence in the mission statement for Eastern Illinois University’s Booth Library states “Our mission is to collaboratively empower the intellectual and creative growth of our diverse campus and community.” This commitment to the promotion of diversity has led the librarians and their DEI committee to ask an important question, are students of diverse backgrounds comfortable using our facilities? This research used a mixed-methods study to survey and interview numerous African American undergraduate EIU students to learn more about their experiences with Booth Library, specifically how it is used, when it is used, and changes they would like to …

Intention To Purchase Counterfeit Products: The Impact Of Unethical Beliefs, Social Status And Perceived Risk, Yasmeen Elsantil, Khaled Bedair
Information Sciences Letters
Counterfeiting has become an economic problem as an increasing number of goods are being illegally produced. However, there is a dearth of studies investigating counterfeiting in the Arab World. This study uses a five-point Likert scale to examine the impact of moral beliefs, social status and perceived risk on the intention to purchase counterfeits of luxury brands in the Arab Gulf (n = 448). Structural equation modelling was employed for data analysis. Results show that consumers’ unethical beliefs and perceived risk have a negative, while status consumption has a positive, impact on the intention to purchase counterfeit products. Additionally, users’ …

Education Design Lab, through professional input and focus groups, developed eight badges that address the instruction of “soft skills” to postsecondary students. With the emergence of alternative credentialing and badging, Education Design Lab wanted to contribute to the evidence of student confidence differences as attributed to completing the badge content as expressed on their resume, interview, and through application or example. Postsecondary institutions were engaged in this evaluation across the nation and allowed for three differing viewpoints on badge importance and expression – student, instruction, and employer.

Myles Away From Perfect: The Potential Impact On Nil Deals Following Lsu Quarterback’S Retirement, Brian Ahle
SLU Law Journal Online
Just prior to the 2022 College Football Season, Louisiana State University Quarterback Myles Brennan decided to abruptly retire from football. Despite the unexpected finish to his career, Brennan is still going to likely retain all of the money he received in endorsements that were paid through the newly approved “NIL” deals available to collegiate athletes, as a result of a stipulation that these deals cannot be “performance-based”. In this article, Brian Ahle evaluates the potential ways in which endorsers may be able to protect their investments, while still complying with the NIL Policies that provide protections towards the athletes.

Have You Found What You’Re Looking For?: How Values Orientations Affect Pro-Social Change After Transformative Service Experiences, Anne Hamby, Justine Rapp Farrell
Marketing Faculty Publications and Presentations
Past research on transformative service experiences suggests that participating individuals may experience positive, as well as (unintended) negative well-being consequences. Most of this work has examined aspects of the service provider and the service experience as a causal factor, underemphasizing aspects of the participants in such experiences as a determinant. Implementing a longitudinal design in the context of a cross-country bike trip to benefit multiple sclerosis, the authors investigate how changes in participants' civic attitudes and skills, as well as perceived personal change and connection to the experience, may depend upon the participants' underlying values orientation. Emerging findings indicate that …

Predictors Of Student Knowledge Of Counselor Identity: Human Services & Related Mental Health Courses, Cortny Stark, Kylie Rogalla, Heather Cook, Joseph D. Wehrman
Journal of Human Services: Training, Research, and Practice
Professional organizations and the field at large have made great strides towards solidifying the professional identities of mental health professionals. Despite these efforts, public knowledge of different types of helping professionals remains limited. Public understanding of helping professionals’ identities is critical to mental health literacy, and has a significant impact on health outcomes. Post-secondary education provides many students with exposure to information regarding types of helping professionals, and their scope of practice. This expansion study engages students completing college-level courses to clarify those variables that predict student knowledge and perceived scope of practice of a variety of counselors.

College Students’ Purchase Behaviors Of Single-Serve Premium Juices, Robin Hardin, Michelle L. Childs, Win G-Y Koo, Kwangho Park
Journal of Applied Marketing Theory
There has been a surge in demand for premium single-serve juices, and college students may be in the forefront of this growing trend because of the perceived social status accompanied by their consumption. External influence (i.e., peer influence and social status) emerged as a component of motivation for the use of premium juices. Findings contribute to Veblen’s theory of conspicuous consumption, demonstrating that consumer motivation for status-laden products occurs even for consumable products that are relatively low cost.

Specifically, Colin Kaepernick and Megan Rapinoe have been two prominent activists to advocate for inequalities. 379 respondents, collected from Mount Vernon High School and Amazon Mechanical Turk (MTurk) participated in a study using questionnaires adopted from Sappington (2019) and Torres-Harding (2011). The Social Justice Scale (SJS) is an 11-item questionnaire measuring activism and The Attitudes of Athlete Activism Questionnaire (ATAAQ) contained 19-items that thoroughly measure athlete activism perspectives.
