How 9-12 Grade Students Find Success In Elective Courses In The United States, Laura Doberstein Jan 2022

How 9-12 Grade Students Find Success In Elective Courses In The United States, Laura Doberstein

All Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Learning is social, emotional, and academic. Piecing together these elements in conjunction with applying scientific research based on these areas will help to ensure a basis for which students may be successful in the classes they choose to take in high school, or their elective courses. Research shows that student success stems from students having their basic needs met in order for them to be able to focus on other information being presented to them and their ability to absorb and apply that information to what they already know. Students must also be supported both academically with provided support by …

Poverty is a global problem that has impacted the mental well-being of students. Research shows that in the US, one out of five children under the age of 18 live in poverty. This literature review sought to determine the effects of poverty on students’ mental well-being. Researchers have done in depth studies on poverty and their findings illustrated a close connection between poverty and an increase in mental health risks. Children born in poverty experience the effects of poverty early in life which affects their physical, behavioral, and developmental health. The gap between children from low economic status and those …

The Importance Of Teaching Middle School Social Studies In The United States, Ian Phillip Higgins Jan 2022

The Importance Of Teaching Middle School Social Studies In The United States, Ian Phillip Higgins

All Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In the state of Minnesota, the standardized testing, known as the Minnesota Comprehensive Assessment (MCA) test, does not have a requirement for social studies. Math, reading and sciences are all tested, but social studies is left to the wayside. All across the United States more and more school districts are placing less value on social studies, choosing to focus more time on the subjects that will either be state tested or they deem “most” useful to students in their future careers. With recent current events rocking the United States, both politically and socially, it seems that the country is becoming …

Seditious Conspiracy Charges In The American Terrorism Study (Ats), Katie Ratcliff

Research Projects

In January 2022, the U.S. Department of Justice announced Seditious Conspiracy charges against members of the anti-government extremist group Oath Keepers in connection to the January 6th (2021) siege of the U.S. Capitol Building. Several have entered not guilty pleas and a trial is expected in July 2022.

To provide context, this brief offers an overview of 11 Seditious Conspiracy cases included in the American Terrorism Study (ATS) since 1980. In total, these cases involve nine groups (a.k.a."cells" or "plots") and 78 defendants charged with Seditious Conspiracy (18 USC§ 2384), a relatively rare charge that comprises less than one half …

I Exist, Therefore I Should Vote: Political Human Rights, Voter Suppression And Undermining Democracy In The U.S., Davita S. Glasberg, William T. Armaline, Bandana Purkayastha Jan 2022

I Exist, Therefore I Should Vote: Political Human Rights, Voter Suppression And Undermining Democracy In The U.S., Davita S. Glasberg, William T. Armaline, Bandana Purkayastha

Societies Without Borders

The right to vote is clearly delineated among the rights identified in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, and the US has long held itself as the beacon of that democracy and enfranchisement. Yet, a long history persists of practices and policies of voter suppression and gerrymandering that targets the rights of Black, brown, and indigenous populations in the US, a history that has in recent years escalated. We use the framework of the Human Rights Enterprise to unpack this history and to explore why efforts of voter suppression are intensifying at this particular moment in history.

Age In Relation To Diversity, Sirina Tyler Jan 2022

Age In Relation To Diversity, Sirina Tyler

Student Presentations

Diversity is a growing issue in our society. However, little is known about how people make judgments about and define “diversity”, which is a broad term. The aim of this research was to help us understand how people define diversity— for example, whether a person narrows down the definition of diversity versus having an ambiguous definition of diversity. We hypothesized that there would be an association between age and definitions of diversity, such that older people define diversity differently than younger people.

Trends In Weight Perception, Weight Loss Behaviors, And Body Mass Index Among Young Adults: An Analysis Of Race And Gender, Sarah Swan Jan 2022

Trends In Weight Perception, Weight Loss Behaviors, And Body Mass Index Among Young Adults: An Analysis Of Race And Gender, Sarah Swan

Student Presentations

This study investigates the relationship between Body Mass Index (BMI), weight perception, and weight loss behaviors over time in a cohort of young adults. Using data from the National Longitudinal Study of Youth, 1997, we track changes in BMI and weight perception from ages 12 to 40. Results indicate that while BMI increases over time for all young adults, young men more frequently perceive changes in weight over time compared to young women. Moreover, we find substantial weight perception disparities among young women but not young men. Overall, results indicate that the social perception of weight and weight loss behaviors …

Mitigating The Mental Health Impact Of Marginalization And Discrimination, Debra A. Hope Jan 2022

Mitigating The Mental Health Impact Of Marginalization And Discrimination, Debra A. Hope

Trans Collaborations Academic Papers

In honor of the life and work of Aaron T. Beck, this paper describes the application of cognitive therapy to management of marginalization stress among minoritized communities. Collaborative empiricism, cognitive restructuring, and behavioral interventions are highlighted as being particularly useful in a contemporary multicultural approach for the anxiety, depression, stress, and other sequelae of marginalization due to a stigmatized identity. Although primarily illustrated through recent work with transgender and gender diverse adults, the discussion extends to other groups including racial, ethnic, and sexual minorities and immigrants. This work illustrates the power of Dr. Beck’s approach to address the presenting concerns …

Test–Retest Reliability And Sensitivity Of A Brief Clinical Monitoring Measure For Transgender And Gender Diverse Adults: The Trans Collaborations Clinical Check-In (Tc3), T. Zachary Huit, Natalie R. Holt, Alexander Farquhar-Leicester, Rebecca L. Brock, Richard Mocarski, Nathan Woodruff, Debra Hope

Trans Collaborations Academic Papers

The current study aimed to examine the test–retest reliability and sensitivity of the Trans Collaborations Clinical Check-In (TC3) in a 3-month period with four assessment points at baseline, 1, 2, and 3 months to examine its utility as a clinical progress monitoring measure. This study builds on the initial validation study conducted by Holt et al. (2019). The sample of 32 transgender and gender diverse (TGD) participants were chosen who met screening for at least modest depression and anxiety, and did not have other significant risk factors (e.g., mania, self-harm). Participants completed a battery of measures that assessed …
