Accountability: Construct Definition And Measurement Of A Virtue Vital To Flourishing, Charlotte Witvliet, Sung Joon Jang, Byron R. Johnson, C. Stephen Evans, Jack W. Berry, Joseph Leman, Robert C. Roberts, John Peteet, Andrew B. Torrance, Ashley N. Hayden

Faculty Scholarship

Embracing accountability to others for one’s responsibilities within relationships is important for flourishing, yet underexamined. An interdisciplinary team defined the construct of accountability and developed an 11-item single-factor Accountability Scale. In national samples with US census demographic representation (total N = 1257), we conducted psychometric analyses using methods from classical test theory (exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses) and item response theory. The Accountability Scale demonstrated internal consistency, construct validity, test-retest reliability, and incremental validity. Accountability correlated positively with relational variables (agreeableness, empathy) responsibility-oriented variables (conscientiousness, self-regulation), virtues (gratitude, forgiveness, limitations-owning humility), relational repair, perceived meaning presence, and flourishing, inversely with …

Cartography, Territory And Empire Mapping The Alaska Boundary Dispute, 1821-1903, Michael Letzring Aug 2022

Cartography, Territory And Empire Mapping The Alaska Boundary Dispute, 1821-1903, Michael Letzring

Arctic and Northern Studies

In the wake of the Klondike gold rush of 1898 a long-simmering dispute over the boundary between Alaska territory and British-America (Canada) rose to a boil. The disagreement between the United States and England was a combination of imperial arrogance, geographic ignorance, administrative neglect, and diplomatic brinksmanship. At every step the dispute was fueled by colonial cartography and served an eventual European/Euro-American hegemony over the indigenous Tlingit people. In this dissertation, a series of three papers will describe and analyze the precursors and resolution of the Alaska Boundary Dispute in part by employing novel methods of analysis of historical maps …

Imposter Syndrome & The Law School Caste System, Sara L. Ochs Aug 2022

Imposter Syndrome & The Law School Caste System, Sara L. Ochs

Pace Law Review

For decades, legal academia has been structured around a hierarchical caste system, with tenured and tenure-track doctrinal law professors—many of whom are men—occupying the highest caste, and professors of legal skills courses—who more often identify as women—relegated to the lower castes. The status of these “lower caste” professors is routinely reinforced through weaker job security, less respect, and lower pay than received by their doctrinal, “upper caste” colleagues. Given this inequality, imposter syndrome plays a pervasive role in the lives and careers of professors of legal skills courses. Relying on qualitative data obtained from teaching faculty and staff at ABA …

How Gender Affects Perception Of Safety Following Information Of Sexual Assault, Natale Rahmon, Kiara Summers, Anne Koenig Phd

Creative Collaborations: Annual Showcase of Undergraduate Research

Abstract: The topic of sexual assault is a prevailing social issue and this study focuses on gender differences in how USD students perceive their safety when they are informed about the crime rates of sexual assault. In particular, we compared how safe men and women feel in general, as well as after reading information about sexual assault or general crime rates in a 3 (crime information: sexual assault, general, control) x 2 (participant gender: male, female) between-subjects design. Participants who were randomly assigned to read about sexual assault, for example, learned about the definitions and rates of crimes such as …

Diversity And Inclusion In International Communications: Applications For Today’S Work World, Kimberley Barker Phd, Redhwan Al-Muntaser, Emily J. Boerman, Joshua Burd, Scott Burns, Stephanie Coleman, Christine R. Day, Ciara Grantham, Paul Katokwe, Heidi Philipsen-Meissner Aug 2022

Global Advances in Business Communication

Verna Myers (2016) advocated that “Diversity is being invited to the party, but inclusion is being asked to dance.” Cultural competence demands a strategic understanding of the importance of harnessing the power of diversity and inclusion in every action in organizations, communities, and nations throughout the world. Today’s work world cannot undervalue the importance of having diverse and inclusive representation in all areas of the organization, especially including international communication. By creating an environment that continually asks questions, values and embraces diversity - then collaborates and reconciles potential solutions to create positive outcomes - creates an inclusive environment in which …

Stress, Bullying, Cortisol, And Depressive Symptoms In 9th Grade Adolescents, Susan G. Williams Aug 2022

Stress, Bullying, Cortisol, And Depressive Symptoms In 9th Grade Adolescents, Susan G. Williams

Dissertations

Stress and bullying are known contributors to depressive symptoms in adolescents. Prevalence of depressive symptoms in adolescents is estimated to range from 13% to 34% in recent studies. Ninth graders are in a transitional period developmentally, biologically, physically, and psychosocially. Few studies have examined the relationship between stress, bullying, and depressive symptoms from a biobehavioral perspective in 9th graders. The purpose of this study was to examine stress, bullying, and depressive symptoms including a biomarker of stress, salivary cortisol diurnal rhythm, to determine if there is mediation between the individual variables of stressful life events, perceived stress, bullying, and depressive …

The Perceptions Of Collective Action, Zachary Steven Dees Aug 2022

The Perceptions Of Collective Action, Zachary Steven Dees

Student Theses and Dissertations

Public perceptions on collective action and social protest are riddled with nuance. The present study sought to investigate the variables that influence these perceptions of the public. Based on the results of a pilot study, participants were exposed to four behavior clusters across three differing collective action contexts that served as conditions. These three contexts were comprised of injustices that were most notable to elicit collective action and protest. These three injustices were known as social, economic, and environmental injustices. Participants then completed questionnaires that assessed their score of system justification and their perceptions of collective action and protest. It …

How Mental Health Problems, Adverse Childhood Experiences, And Other Risk Factors Impact Recidivism Rates Among Juvenile Offenders, Ashley Elizabeth Brooks Aug 2022

How Mental Health Problems, Adverse Childhood Experiences, And Other Risk Factors Impact Recidivism Rates Among Juvenile Offenders, Ashley Elizabeth Brooks

Student Theses and Dissertations

Between the years of 1985 and 2008, there was a 43 percent increase in juvenile delinquency cases that were processed in the juvenile courts (National Center for Juvenile Justice, 2011). Based on this increase, the juvenile justice system’s ability to function could be diminished. It is important to properly rehabilitate individuals in order to reduce recidivism rates, and society cannot rehabilitate individuals if they do not know the influential factors of reoffending. This research focuses on influencing factors of reoffending among youth centering on recidivism rates of juvenile offenders by utilizing a secondary data set collected by Dr. Jeffrey Lin …

Associations Between Glycemic Control And Executive Functioning In Type 1 Diabetes: A Systematic Review And Meta-Analysis, Hannah Margot Mcdaniel Aug 2022

Associations Between Glycemic Control And Executive Functioning In Type 1 Diabetes: A Systematic Review And Meta-Analysis, Hannah Margot Mcdaniel

Theses and Dissertations

Research conducted with youth with type 1 diabetes (T1D) has shown that glycemic extremes and poorer T1D management are associated with poorer performance on measures of executive functioning (EF) compared to non-T1D counterparts. Deficits in EF may negatively impact the development of healthy T1D management skills. Our primary aim was to conduct a meta-analytic review of previous studies investigating the associations between glycemic control and EF in children with T1D across the developmental span. Comprehensive literature searches were conducted using PubMed, MedLine, PsycInfo, Google Scholar, and EBSCO for articles that met eligibility criteria. Eligibility criteria included correlational, randomized, and non-randomized …

In Rural America, Older Adult Vaccination Rates Were Higher In Counties With More Aging And Disability Services, Yue Sun, Danielle Rhubart Aug 2022

In Rural America, Older Adult Vaccination Rates Were Higher In Counties With More Aging And Disability Services, Yue Sun, Danielle Rhubart

Population Health Research Brief Series

Aging and disability services (ADS) played an important role for older adults in the COVID-19 vaccination rollout, including sharing information, providing transportation, and serving as vaccination sites. Using data from the National Neighborhood Data Archive and U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, this data slice describes the relationship between county ADS availability and older adult (ages 65+) vaccination rates. It finds that rural counties with higher ADS density have higher older adult vaccination rates. Because of the high risk of COVID-19 mortality and hospitalization for older adults and the large shares of older adults in rural areas, rural county …

Incendiary Devices: Imagining E-Waste Frontiers And Africa’S Digital Futures, Treasa De Loughry Aug 2022

Incendiary Devices: Imagining E-Waste Frontiers And Africa’S Digital Futures, Treasa De Loughry

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

In her article, “Incendiary Devices: Imagining E-Waste Frontiers and Africa’s Digital Futures,” Treasa De Loughry focuses on different visual responses to e-waste in West Africa, from eco-documentary film and photography responses to the infamous Agbogbloshie e-waste yard in Ghana; to techno-utopian visions of e-waste bricoleurs, and e-waste as a signifier and artefact of the neocolonial nature of the capitalist world-ecology. The first half of this article focuses on Florian Weigensamer and Christian Krönes’ documentary film, Welcome to Sodom (2018), grounding it in critiques of the transmedial influence of the documentary form, while attending to the film’s pyrotechnical “optical regime” (Schoonover). …

Beyond ‘Rising Tides’ And ‘Lying Flat’: Emergent Cultural Practices Among Youth In Urban China, Diego Gullotta, Lili Lin Aug 2022

Beyond ‘Rising Tides’ And ‘Lying Flat’: Emergent Cultural Practices Among Youth In Urban China, Diego Gullotta, Lili Lin

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

In their article, “Beyond ‘Rising Tides’ and ‘Lying Flat’: Emergent Cultural Practices Among Youth in Urban China”, Diego Gullotta and Lili Lin examine how Chinese youth are positioned within the dominant culture, how young people appropriate space in their emergent cultural practices, and how they negotiate meaning-making. The article first analyses the rising tides (houlang) video, sponsored jointly by the state and the private sector, and argues that it reduces youth to a homogenous subject inscribed into the discourse of “China’s rise” (zhongguo jueqi) via emotional mobilization. The “lying flat” phenomenon represents young people’s negative response to …

Breadtube Rising: How Modern Creators Use Cultural Formats To Spread Countercultural Ideology, Jj Sylvia Iv, Kyle Moody Aug 2022

Breadtube Rising: How Modern Creators Use Cultural Formats To Spread Countercultural Ideology, Jj Sylvia Iv, Kyle Moody

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

In their article, “BreadTube Rising: How Modern Creators Use Cultural Formats to Spread Countercultural Ideology,” J.J. Sylvia IV and Kyle Moody analyze the rise of BreadTube. Scholars have argued that YouTube’s algorithms lead to greater radicalization (Ribeiro et al.) and bad actors have weaponized algorithms to draw users into conspiracies (boyd, What Hath We Wrought?). This article adds to this by linking these practices to the commodification of social media that spread misinformation as adaptations of socially and rhetorically mediated technologies. It analyzes how the economics of YouTube and other platforms demand that user-generated content fit within paradigms of …

Lesbian, Gay, And Bisexual Students Experiencing Homelessness And Substance Use In The School Context: A Statewide Study, Hadass Moore, Kris De Pedro

Education Faculty Articles and Research

PURPOSE

This study explored differences between lesbian, gay, and bisexual (LGB)-housed and homeless students regarding substance use patterns on and off school grounds and the unique contribution of homelessness to substance use in school.

METHODS

Data were from the 2013-2015 California Healthy Kids Survey, a statewide survey of school protective factors and risk behaviors. A representative sample of 9th- and 11th-grade students (N = 20,337) was used. Comparisons between housed (n = 19,456) and homeless (doubled up: n = 715; acute homeless: n = 166) LGB students were conducted. We used chi-square tests to compare rates of lifetime, past-30-day, and …

What Do Good Lawyers Know That The Rest Of Us Don’T? Introducing First-Year Law Students To “Legal Realism” (White Paper), Gregory Crespi Aug 2022

What Do Good Lawyers Know That The Rest Of Us Don’T? Introducing First-Year Law Students To “Legal Realism” (White Paper), Gregory Crespi

Nebraska Law Bulletin (Selected Issues)

I set forth below the general outline of a short lecture that I usually give to my first–year contract law students, at about the end of their first week of classes, in order to get them started thinking about the process of judicial decision-making, and especially about the “legal realist” perspective on that process.

Community-Engaged Teaching: Opportunities And Challenges For Graduate Instructors, Stacy Bluth

Exploring How We Teach

  • Community-engaged teaching can help alleviate the lack of relevance and isolation many graduate students experience.
  • Graduate instructors using community-engaged teaching need to be particularly mindful of how they can find mentors, build equitable partnerships, and transform their community-engaged teaching into scholarship.

Navigating Evidence And Knowledge Equity, J. Nick Fisk Aug 2022

Navigating Evidence And Knowledge Equity, J. Nick Fisk

Exploring How We Teach

  • Graduate instructors are awkwardly situated in the academy, which shapes their agency in teaching effectively and developing their own teaching practice.
  • Evidence is a potentially fraught construct that is nonetheless necessary and accepted in the academy and can be leveraged in lieu of the often-wanting personal authority of graduate instructors to advocate better teaching practices while also developing themselves professionally.
  • Principles of knowledge equity, which is foundationed on a pluralistic epistemological approach to knowledge building, can guide graduate instructors to consider a more expansive view and contextual approach to evidence to better serve students.
  • Adoption of evidence-supported practices in the …

The Development Of The Discrimination Against Asexuality (Daa) Scale, Madelynn Quinn Darby Aug 2022

The Development Of The Discrimination Against Asexuality (Daa) Scale, Madelynn Quinn Darby

Student Theses and Dissertations

Though asexuality has had a place in the empirical literature for 20 years, it has rarely been studied empirically. The study of discrimination towards asexuals has been studied even less, in part, due to few existing relevant measures. To address the gap in measurement, a scale was created to measure discriminatory attitudes towards asexuals. An exploratory factor analysis (EFA) and confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) were conducted to determine the model of the measure. A six-factor model was discovered: Inhuman View, Social Relationships, Disorder View, LGBT+ Community, Transient View, and Romantic Relationships. The DAA was found to have very strong reliability …
