Undoing The Dyad: Re-Examining Mentorship With A Feminist Lens, Bailey Wallace, Melissa Dewitt, Elia Trucks Jan 2022

Undoing The Dyad: Re-Examining Mentorship With A Feminist Lens, Bailey Wallace, Melissa Dewitt, Elia Trucks

University Libraries: Faculty Scholarship

Academic libraries consistently use mentoring programs to integrate new employees by sharing organizational knowledge and providing support to advance in their careers. Traditional models of mentorship are tools that help support existing power structures and keep in power those benefiting from the associated privilege. One way to interrogate traditional mentorship models and their inherent inequities is to apply a feminist lens in examining the expectations and actions of mentors and mentees. This chapter discusses how the traditional dyad mentoring model does not support everyone equally and explores alternative, inclusive models of mentorship, such as group mentoring and peer mentoring. We …

The Wheel Of Oppression: Rolling Towards Substance Use In Central Appalachia, Sydney Cox Jan 2022

The Wheel Of Oppression: Rolling Towards Substance Use In Central Appalachia, Sydney Cox

DSW Capstone Projects

For nearly 100 years, Central Appalachia has been characterized by some of the highest poverty rates in the nation. Not coincidentally, the region has also been characterized by some of the highest rates of substance use. Despite decades of funding and support, Central Appalachia continues to foster a symbiotic relationship between poverty and substance use. The purpose of this project was to explore the missing link that ties the two poor determinants of health together and to provide a name to a phenomenon otherwise omitted from social work and policy making practice within Central Appalachia.

The first product of this …

Child Welfare: Workforce Retention, Competence, And The Connection To Social Work Education, Brittany Stanley Jan 2022

Child Welfare: Workforce Retention, Competence, And The Connection To Social Work Education, Brittany Stanley

DSW Capstone Projects

While there are many avenues to discuss and explore, the key area of interest for the Capstone Project is that of retention of a competent frontline workforce. Each state has their own set of guidelines for hiring frontline workers which allows for variety in the educational backgrounds of the investigative and ongoing workers. This can become problematic when the educational background may not be the most suited for the work and challenges faced by child welfare workers.

During the development of the Capstone Project, one could not help but wonder that if workers were adequately prepared for the demands of …

The enactment of Waiver 1135, in response to the COVID-19 pandemic, enabled healthcare systems to deliver care via telehealth. A descriptive analysis of the impact of the implementation of Waiver 1135 on increasing access to care in Virginia was conducted. Guided by Andersen’s Behavioral Model of Health Service Use (BMHSU) theory, this study used a longitudinal, monthly-level data from the Virginia’s All Payers Claim Database to examine telehealth utilization rates between January 2019 and December 2020. Observations in insurance coverage, healthcare clinicians role and specialty and geographic location were all examined. Results suggest that while Virginia’s overall volume of telehealth …

The Role Of Coping Self-Efficacy, Coping Strategies, And Resiliency Following Sexual Assault, Lauren Hirsch

Clinical Psychology Dissertations

Sexual assault is a pervasive problem in the United States that effects people of all genders and sexualities. Due to fears of negative consequences, many victims of sexual assault do not legally prosecute the perpetrator. Those who do risk experiencing secondary victimization. The use of legal advocates during prosecution can help to guide individuals through the legal process and add a layer of social support that can minimize feelings of secondary victimization and help increase resilience in the victims. In this dissertation I examined a model predicting resilience from coping self-efficacy, mediated by four coping strategies. Participants were at least …

Department of Educational Psychology: Faculty Publications

The purpose of the current study is to prospectively examine the extent to which social norms perceptions regarding commitment to ending sexual violence are associated with subsequent peer victimization and perpetration experiences. Two types of social norms perceptions were examined: 1) peer norms (perceptions of norms among other students in their city), and 2) adult norms (perceptions of norms among adults in their city). Participants were 1,259 middle and high school youth from a single school district (three high schools and five middle schools) who completed online surveys at two‐time points, 6 months apart. Adolescents for whom perceptions of peer …

Green Dot Community takes place in towns and aims to influence all town members to prevent SV and IPV by addressing protective factors (i.e., collective efficacy, positive prevention social norms, and bystander helping, or actionism). …

Co-Use Among Confidants: An Examination Of Polysubstance Use And Personal Relationships In Southeastern Nebraska, G. Robin Gauthier, Kelly Markowski, Jeffrey A. Smith, Sela R. Harcey, Bergen Johnston Jan 2022

Co-Use Among Confidants: An Examination Of Polysubstance Use And Personal Relationships In Southeastern Nebraska, G. Robin Gauthier, Kelly Markowski, Jeffrey A. Smith, Sela R. Harcey, Bergen Johnston

Department of Sociology: Faculty Publications

This study examines the relationship between personal networks and polysubstance use among people who use drugs (PWUD) in a medium sized city in the Midwest. A large body of work has demonstrated that personal relationships have an ambivalent association with substance use. On the one hand, a supportive network is associated with safer drug use practices and dramatically improves the outlook for recovery. However, individuals whose personal networks are composed of co-drug use partners are more likely to engage in risky practices. We argue that this notion of “supportive” social contacts and “risky” social contacts is ultimately incomplete: risky behaviors …

Including student work in our repository fulfills many goals. It allows EMU to showcase and preserve the excellent scholarship produced by our students, and then make these works available to users around the world. These collections serve as recruitment tools to demonstrate what prospective students may achieve through the opportunities EMU offers. The repository provides our students with a space …

Sepsis Discharge Program: An Interdisciplinary Approach To Reduce Sepsis Readmissions, Rex Daniel Demetria Lomboy Jan 2022

Sepsis Discharge Program: An Interdisciplinary Approach To Reduce Sepsis Readmissions, Rex Daniel Demetria Lomboy

Yale School of Nursing Digital Theses

The social and economic burden associated with sepsis readmission remains a global healthcare issue. Sepsis survivors are at higher risk for physical debilitation, readmission, and death, yet despite advanced sepsis prevention and interventions, post-sepsis care and sepsis readmission reduction efforts, remain scant. Sepsis readmission costs ($500M /year) are more than the annual cost of acute myocardial infarction ($142M /year) and heart failure ($229M/year) combined. The overall goal of this DNP project was to reduce sepsis readmissions for patients identified as high risk for readmission using a standardized, safe discharge program (SDP) and implement it using a dynamic interdisciplinary collaborative approach. …

Retention Of The Newly Licensed Registered Nursing Workforce Post-Coronavirus (Covid-19): Establishing A Trauma-Informed Wellness Program, The Registered Nurse Residency Script For The Future (Rnrx) (© Maryellen Hope Kosturko, 2022), Maryellen Hope Kosturko Jan 2022

Retention Of The Newly Licensed Registered Nursing Workforce Post-Coronavirus (Covid-19): Establishing A Trauma-Informed Wellness Program, The Registered Nurse Residency Script For The Future (Rnrx) (© Maryellen Hope Kosturko, 2022), Maryellen Hope Kosturko

Yale School of Nursing Digital Theses

Retention of newly licensed registered nurses (NLRNs) is crucial to the future success of a thriving nursing workforce. It is well-established that most NLRNs experience stress as they transition from school to work environments leading some to leave the workforce or nursing altogether within their first two years post-graduation. The novel Coronavirus virus (Covid-19) pandemic exacerbated this problem as NLRNs experienced increased stress, fear, exhaustion, uncertainty, and dissatisfaction, further threatening the future of the nursing workforce. The aim of this project was to develop and implement a trauma-informed wellness program in an acute care inpatient hospital, The Registered Nurse Residency …

Divest Or Disband?: A Social Problems Game Analysis Of Canadian Media Coverage Of 2020'S Defund The Police Movement, Nicholas Fappiano Jan 2022

Divest Or Disband?: A Social Problems Game Analysis Of Canadian Media Coverage Of 2020'S Defund The Police Movement, Nicholas Fappiano

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

Policing in Canada and America has come under the microscope due to several high-profile incidents of police violence against racialized citizens. The murder of George Floyd by officer Derek Chauvin thrust the concept of ‘defund the police’ to the mainstream public dialogue. To date, there are few studies that explore what defund the police means. The present media analysis addresses this research gap by analyzing how Canadian mass media covered the defund police movement. A social constructionist theoretical framework was utilized to analyze 109 newspaper articles on defund the police from The Toronto Star and The Globe and Mail. The …

Agents At Work: Modeling How Space Can Influence People In The Workplace, Jovan Poposki Jan 2022

Agents At Work: Modeling How Space Can Influence People In The Workplace, Jovan Poposki

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

People interact with space in ways that are important to consider when designing an office. Not considering this relationship has led to the dissatisfaction of employees post-occupancy. In this thesis, I present an agent-based model that incorporates several characteristics of agents, such as work ethic and sociability, and explores their behaviours and social interactions in the workplace. The model is first tested on a commercial workspace, varying agent parameters to see how they change the behaviour of the model. I find that agents with extreme personalities are happiest, and show a bimodality in the distribution of time spent in various …

Adrift In Uncharted Waters: A Case Study Of A Muslim Family Involved With Child Protection Services In Ontario, Bibi Baksh Jan 2022

Adrift In Uncharted Waters: A Case Study Of A Muslim Family Involved With Child Protection Services In Ontario, Bibi Baksh

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

This dissertation sought to understand how Muslims experience mandated child protection services in Ontario within the Canadian (and specifically, Ontarian) socio-political context. Ongoing experiences of racism, xenophobia, and Islamophobia within systems that intersect with child welfare, including schools and the criminal justice system, have compounding effects on Muslim families who are singled out politically and socially. Drawing from trends in child welfare literature, policy initiatives, and practices that consider the system’s impacts upon racialized peoples, this research contributes to the discourse by highlighting religious diversity as an under-investigated source of discrimination. Set against systemic challenges inherent in the child protection …
