Equine-Assisted Therapy And Learning Interventions With Youth: A Meta-Analysis And Quasi-Experimental Study., Sarah Lovins
Graduate Theses/Dissertations
Equine-assisted psychotherapy interventions have become increasingly used and tested as an alternative or complementary approach with youth. This project presents two studies. The first study consists of an overview of existing reviews and a meta-analysis of controlled and comparison studies on the effectiveness of equine interventions with youth. A comprehensive search and selection procedure produced 3,525 records, from which 56 quantitative studies were identified, and ultimately 16 controlled or comparison studies were selected for inclusion in the meta-analysis. Results showed a statistically significant, medium, and homogenous effect size for the overall effectiveness of equine interventions for youth psycho-social outcomes ( …

Face The Facts, Or Is The Face A Fact?: Biometric Privacy In Publicly Available Data, Daniel Levin
Face The Facts, Or Is The Face A Fact?: Biometric Privacy In Publicly Available Data, Daniel Levin
Fordham Intellectual Property, Media and Entertainment Law Journal
Recent advances in biometric technologies have caused a stir among the privacy community. Specifically, facial recognition technologies facilitated through data scraping practices have called into question the basic precepts we had around exercising biometric privacy. Yet, in spite of emerging case law on the permissibility of data scraping, comparatively little attention has been given to the privacy implications endemic to such practices.
On the one hand, privacy proponents espouse the view that manipulating publicly available data from, for example, our social media profiles, derogates from users’ expectations around the kind of data they share with platforms (and the obligations such …

Female Military Sexual Trauma: A Critical And Comprehensive Literature Review, Anna Stanton
Psychology Doctoral Specialization Projects
Military Sexual Trauma (MST) refers to a psychological trauma that resulted from any sexual assault or threatening sexual harassment that a military member experienced during his or her military service. Military sexual trauma is a significant problem within the United States military that threatens the strength, readiness, and morale of the military, and has devastating personal effects on survivors and their families. During 2006, the military began taking steps to understand the prevalence of MST and implement programs to help prevent it. Despite some of the progress these programs have shown, there are still barriers that impede an MST survivor’s …

Pharmacy Faculty Books and Book Chapters
The rapid transition to distance learning in response to the unexpected SARS-CoV-2/COVID-19 pandemic led to disruption of clinical skills development, which are typically conducted face-to-face. Consequently, faculty adapted their courses, using a multitude of active learning modalities, to meet student learning objectives in the didactic and experiential settings. Strategies and considerations to implement innovative delivery methods and address potential challenges are elucidated. Furthermore, integration of a layered learning approach may allow for more broad perspectives and allow additional interactions and feedback, which is especially necessary in the virtual environment.

Domestic Violence And Leave Laws: How New York Can Improve Its Leave Policies Based On The Laws Of Washington, D.C. And New Jersey, Nusrat J. Khan
City University of New York Law Review
Although intimate partner violence often starts in the privacy of one’s home, its impact spills over in almost all aspects of the victim’s life. The effects of violence are tangible – physical and emotional harm to the person and their dependents, loss of educational or employment opportunities, financial problems, interactions with the criminal justice system, and ongoing legal issues. To address the loss of employment, federal and state governments have implemented leave laws to offer job protection for victims of intimate partner violence. Leave laws are an essential aspect of employment as the ability to take leave from work provides …

Moral Distress Among Master’S Counseling Students Attending A Cacrep Accredited Counselor Training Program, Matthew Stevens
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Moral distress, an understudied phenomenon among the counseling profession, has been defined as an experience of knowing the right thing to do but being institutionally prevented from doing what is believed to be right. This phenomenon often occurs in hierarchical relationships, such as those between student and teacher or supervisor and supervisee, and may lead to psychological impairment, deviation from ethical standards, and professional burnout, which threatens the ability of professional counselors to initiate and maintain healthy professional relationships. The purpose of this descriptive, phenomenological study was to explore the lived experiences of six master’s level students attending counselor training …

The Perspectives Of Former Csec On The Recruitment Process Through Online Platforms, Shawnte Beacham-Houston
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Commercial sexual exploitation of children (CSEC) is the sexual exploitation of children for financial gain and is a billion-dollar industry. The sexual exploitation of children is a serious form of sexual abuse and a violation of their human rights. Previous research has explored sex trafficking victimization but not pathways to sexual exploitation. Current research does not explain how online activities and specific internet platforms are involved in CSEC recruitment and entry into the commercial sex trade industry. In this study, the way in which social media platforms are used to recruit children into the sex trade industry was addressed. The …

Mental Health-Medical Crisis Team Impact On First Responder Outcomes On Persons With Mental Illness, Mary Josephine Lakey
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Persons with mental illness (PMIs) are 16 times more likely to experience harm when interacting with police than individuals without mental illness. This inequity has recently become prominent in American discourse due to the ubiquitous use of cell phones and social media, where videos of incidents between police and PMIs circulate. In this generic qualitative research, members of a collaborative mental health and emergency medical service professionals (EMSPs) team in an urban area were interviewed to assess the team members’ perceptions of the impact of the program on frequency of adverse outcomes during interactions with PMIs. The theoretical framework for …
How Being Aware Of Military Culture Influences Social Work Practice With Female Military Personnel, John Raymond Gonzalez
How Being Aware Of Military Culture Influences Social Work Practice With Female Military Personnel, John Raymond Gonzalez
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Active-duty women in the military seek help through the Family Advocacy Program (FAP) on military bases from social workers with a master’s degree in social work (MSW) who are hired by the federal government or by firms that contract with social workers to serve military personnel. Most of those social workers have no military background per se, which brings into question how being aware of the military culture might influence their practice with female military personnel. Grounded in self-awareness theory, which places focus on one's awareness relative to one's culture and environment at any time, the purpose of this action …

Exploring Interpretations And Consequences Of Michigan’S Expungement Statute Through Formal Modeling And Analysis, Jonathan C. Parks
Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports
Rules and regulations often come with a lack of clarity and the possibility of multiple interpretations. Without a clear understanding of what they are supposed to mean it becomes difficult to tell the people that these rules and regulations apply what to expect from them. This report will take a closer look at one of these sets of rules, the expungement laws in the state of Michigan. The alternative interpretations and possible contradictions are explored and their effects on real people are discussed. After an introduction providing a general understanding of the issue, a proposed solution to these problems will …

Navigating academic spaces is challenging for first-generation college students, particularly for Black women doctoral students who produce decolonizing research at historically White institutions. For these Black women scholars, the workload is doubled. While learning to conduct research, Black women scholars must also survive the hidden curriculum of hegemonic academia while simultaneously doing the emotional labor of leading their committees towards an understanding and respect for Black women's intersectionality and its impacts on Black women scholars' ways of knowing. This chapter is an autoethnographic counternarrative of one Black woman doctoral student's endeavor to design and conduct Endarkened feminist research that honors …

Cultural And Gender Shifts: Trends And Factors Hmong Male Students Face In Pursuit Of Higher Education, Sai Yang Xiong
University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations
The educational trends in the attainment of Hmong American students in higher education have grown significantly over the past 40+ years. However, modern academia is still somewhat new to most United States Hmong refugees since their resettlement in 1975 after the Vietnam War. Hmong students are children of refugee immigrants who came to the United States with no formal schooling, limited English proficiency, and a low-socioeconomic background. Hmong parents believe that having an education will enable their children to seek employment, perform well in society, and gain financial stability. The purpose of this study was to analyze challenges that contribute …

Educators’ Perception Of Their Psychosocial Support Of Elementary Students In Gabon, Africa, Michel Ikamba
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Although educators internationally have often provided care to vulnerable students who struggle to meet the needs of nutrition, health, protection, and access to essential social services, no formal social systems exist in Gabon to aid educators who work with these students. In the absence of relevant local research and drawing on Dewey’s theory of progressive education as a conceptual model, this basic qualitative study asked about educators’ perceptions in limited resource elementary schools in Gabon of the social needs and strategies employed with students who demonstrated signs of disengagement and alienation. Qualitative data collection included semi-structured recorded interviews with 12 …

Experiences In Informal Mentoring Among African American Women In Management, Alexandria Simone Samuels-Ross
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
There is a lack of African American women representing senior management and executive positions within nonprofit organizations due to organizational culture, gender stereotypes, and failure to capitalize on the talents of women in general. The purpose of this generic qualitative study was to explore the informal mentoring experiences of African American women employed as managers for over two years in nonprofit organizations. Research has suggested the need for further study of on-the-job mentoring and its impact on employees’ job satisfaction and opportunities to advance within an organization. The theoretical framework that guided the study was social exchange theory, which is …
Military Emergency And Critical Care Nurses’ Lived Experiences Of Resilience, Carla Ann Wiese
Military Emergency And Critical Care Nurses’ Lived Experiences Of Resilience, Carla Ann Wiese
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Resilience has been studied across a myriad of populations. Many resilience studies have focused on military service members, including military healthcare personnel, specifically nurses. Although many quantitative resilience studies have been conducted, there have been few qualitative studies in this area. Qualitative studies have focused solely on spiritual resilience, although mixed methods studies have identified other resilience characteristics. The aim of this descriptive phenomenological study was to identify resilience characteristics through rich description within the situational and philosophical patterns of resilience and gain a better understanding of how emergency and critical care military nurses honed resilience in the face of …
