Trauma-Informed Care In Nursing Curricula: Development Of A Simulation-Based Educational Framework To Guide Health Professions, Heather Guest
Trauma-Informed Care In Nursing Curricula: Development Of A Simulation-Based Educational Framework To Guide Health Professions, Heather Guest
Nursing Theses and Dissertations
Individuals of all ages, genders, social and ethnic backgrounds, and cultures suffer traumatic experiences. Trauma does not discriminate. The immense number of individuals struggling with trauma requires that health care providers approach patient care through a trauma-informed lens. Trauma-informed care is an evidence-based approach to patient-centered care and is vital to the healthcare provider-patient relationship. The increased responsibility of healthcare providers to provide trauma-informed care to all individuals demands a scientifically-based framework to guide the development of a trauma-informed health care professions education program. Healthcare simulation allows health professions’ students to experience real-life scenarios in a safe setting before transitioning …
Religiosity And Midwestern Lgbtq+ Homeless Youth, Alecia Keller, Nancy Kelley
Religiosity And Midwestern Lgbtq+ Homeless Youth, Alecia Keller, Nancy Kelley
Theses/Capstones/Creative Projects
Previous investigations have focused on the intersections of LGBTQ+ youth and religion, homelessness and religion, or homeless LGBTQ+ youth, without recognizing the multiple intersections that make up each LGBTQ+ youth’s identity. The purpose of this study was to gain more insight into how being homeless, identifying as LGBTQ+, and growing up with some religion played a role in transitional-aged (ages eighteen to twenty-five) youths’ lives. After working with Youth Emergency Services (YES) in Omaha, Nebraska, and conducting interviews with LGBTQ+ youth who were previously homeless, similar topics emerged among participants. Three participants were evicted from their homes because of their …

The Impact Of Covid-19 On Recreational Therapists Working In Inpatient Mental Health Settings, Summer Matics
The Impact Of Covid-19 On Recreational Therapists Working In Inpatient Mental Health Settings, Summer Matics
All Dissertations
Since 2020, the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) has impacted the lives of the general public, but healthcare workers including those that work in inpatient mental health settings have seen long-lasting impacts in their workplace. Recreational therapists (CTRSs) are among the mental healthcare workers that have been impacted by the pandemic but there is no existing research that specifically studies their lived experiences. This study used the theoretical foundations and methods of hermeneutic phenomenology in order to describe how COVID-19 has impacted CTRSs’ workplace from a safety perspective, their stress and coping, and also their supervisory duties. Seventeen participants were recruited and …

Artificial intelligence (AI) and its impact on society have received a great deal of attention in the past five years since the first Stanford AI100 report. AI already globally impacts individuals in critical and personal ways, and many industries will continue to experience disruptions as the full algorithmic effects are understood. Higher education is one of the industries that will be greatly impacted; consequently, many institutions have begun accelerating its adoption across disciplines to address the fast-approaching market shift. Recent advances with the technology are especially promising for its potential to create and scale personalized learning for students, to optimize …

Study Of Collective Self-Esteem And Academic Motivation Examining Perceptions Of Academic Statistics Of Black Traditional Undergraduate Students Attending A Pwi, Ariyah Robinson
Honors Theses
College enrollment for black traditional college-age students has been on the rise. Matriculation experienced a seven percent increase from 2000 to 2018 (NCES, 2020). However, Cokley et al. (2013) found that black students exhibit the highest minority stress among college students. Researchers also found that students may feel pressured to break stereotypes and perform well academically (Smith & Hope, 2020; Brooms, 2019; Mary et al., 2018). As more black students enroll in colleges nationwide, there is more than reasonable cause to continue examining how the matriculation of black students into predominantly white institutions impacts black students and their perceptions of …

Congregation Affordable Housing Development: Examining Practices And The Role Of Social Capital Across Urban Neighborhoods, Catherine C. Fisher
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
Currently the United States faces a homelessness and affordable housing crisis further exacerbated by economic recession and the COVID-19 pandemic. Homelessness and housing insecurity disproportionately affects women and children, African Americans and other racially marginalized groups. Federal government disinvestment in the production of affordable housing units has led to a steep decline in stock. The U.S. history of class and race discrimination continues to impact affordable housing production through exclusionary zoning laws. In urban neighborhoods religious institutions possess both land and social assets. A growing number of religious congregations are engaged in developing under-utilized land to create affordable housing. Congregation …

Beyond The Numbers: A Deeper Dive Into The Dearth Of Girls And Women In Stem, Jennifer John Buck
Beyond The Numbers: A Deeper Dive Into The Dearth Of Girls And Women In Stem, Jennifer John Buck
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
Despite decades of research attempting to better understand the dearth of girls and women in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM), gender imbalances persist in many STEM fields. This is particularly the case in math-intensive STEM fields. The current program of research used mixed-methods research to better understand these inequities. The first paper identified gender and ethnic variation in how undergraduates reason about STEM inequities. The second paper found that how emerging adults narrate “turning points” in their relationship with math was associated with their current math outcomes and future plans to pursue math. The final paper demonstrated that how …

Community College Success: Reexamining Metrics Of Success Through A Cohort Cluster Analysis Of Student Stakeholders, Abigail D. Baird

Community college success is measured by graduation rates. This metric of success does not account for the diverse types of students attending community colleges and all the outcomes that result. The purpose of this quantitative cohort cluster analysis is to analyze course taking behavior, and outcomes of various student stakeholders, to better understand the students and how successful community colleges are. Using archival student enrollment data, the study focused on a relatively recent cohort of students enrolled at community colleges in New York State for the first time in fall 2014. Ambiguous, Affective, And Arduous: Volunteers’ Invisible Work With Young Adults, Jenni Mölkänen, Päivi Honkatukia
Journal of Youth Development
Mentoring has been regarded as a promising way to reach at-risk youth and to strengthen the protective factors. This article focuses on emotions, reflections, and challenges that adult volunteers face in trying to establish and maintain a friend relationship with young adults in a multicomponent mentor setting in Finland. Based on our participatory observations in volunteering, a focus group discussion with volunteers and facilitators of volunteering, and interviews with young adults we analyze the nature of volunteers’ actions as invisible work as characterized by Devault (1999). We argue that invisible work should be recognized as a significant part of volunteering …
