Missionaries And Manipulation: Exploring Vulnerabilities And Safeguards For Young Missionaries In The Church Of Jesus Christ Of Latter-Day Saints, Rachel Sowa Ray
Undergraduate Honors Theses
This project aims to better understand the vulnerabilities of missionaries of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints as they relate to emotional abuse stemming from companions, mission leaders, and those they teach. It compiles the current research on relationship abuse and draws connections between these issues and missionaries. Emotional abuse is defined. We review various elements of missionary life, including the age of missionaries, religious pressures, pressures inherent in missionary life, and cultural naiveté. Each of these is tied to potential weaknesses in which emotional abuse can impact the life and relationships of a missionary. Suggestions for safeguards …

Review Of Conceptualizations, Peer Interventions, And Principles And Standards In Approaches To Intimate Partner Violence (Ipv), Sara Fister
Counselor Education Capstones
Intimate partner violence (IPV), a type of domestic violence, is a human rights issue that is considered a global health concern. The daunting statistics outline the immense need for principles and standards for approaches to IPV. The overarching goal of this review is to explore peer support and peer mentorship as a potential adjunct service to a comprehensive service program for IPV victim-survivors. Conceptualization, theory, and frameworks; social support and peer support; the self-identity of IPV victims; single versus integrative services; service enhancement; evaluation; and advocacy and interventions are investigated in relation to IPV services, in general, and peer support, …

Educator Preparation & Leadership Faculty Works
Objectives Current research on trafficking in persons (TIP) relies heavily on legal and prosecutorial definitions. A public health approach has called for population-level assessment; however, identification of TIP victims lacks a standardised operational definition. This study applied the Prevalence Reduction Innovation Forum (PRIF) statistical definitions, developed by the US Department of State, to a community survey in Cape Town, South Africa.
Designs A high-risk sampling strategy was used. TIP screening questions from two instruments were matched with PRIF domain indicators to generate prevalence estimates. Sensitivity, specificity and receiver operating characteristics analyses were conducted to assess the performance of the two …

Bipoc Contributions Are Largely Excluded From Introductory Social Work Textbooks, Porscha Doucette
Fall Student Research Symposium 2022
The National Association of Social Workers first added social justice to its Code of Ethics in 1979. However, the major focus for social justice was outside the profession itself. In order to genuinely work towards social justice, lingering institutional racism and white supremacy must be identified and rectified at every level of the profession, including its education.

JSU Yearbooks
The JSU Yearbook Collection spans the years from 1926 to the present. The publication began in 1926 as the Teacola (some volumes spelled "Teacoala") and continued under this title through 1933. The yearbook appears to have ceased printing after that year; the student newspaper took the name Teacola (later changed to the Collegian and finally the Chanticleer) and began publication in 1934. The yearbook started up again in 1947 under the name Mimosa. The Library holds all volume years that were printed: 1926-1933, 1947-1950, 1952-present.

How South Asian Activists Queer The Model Minority Myth: A Critical Oral History Project, Noorie Baig
How South Asian Activists Queer The Model Minority Myth: A Critical Oral History Project, Noorie Baig
Communication ETDs
The model minority myth (MMM) is predicated on stereotypical perceptions of Asian Americans as subservient high-achievers who comply with the ideologies of meritocracy, whiteness, and capitalism. However, South Asian American (SAA) activists and community organisers, the focus of this study, are working to confront and abolish racist, heterosexist, and other exclusionary injustices, policies, and practices. This dissertation seeks to understand the historical influences of the MMM, the challenges SAA activists and organisers face, and the communication strategies they use to negotiate the MMM through their activism. Oral history methods and critical thematic analysis are used to elicit and analyse personal …

The Ethics Of Spirit-Centered Counseling, Edward E. Decker Jr.
Salubritas: International Journal of Spirit-Empowered Counseling
At present, no ethical standards exist for Spirit-centered counselors. This article is an initial delineation of these standards. Professional ethical standards are reviewed, and specific guidelines identified. Attention is given to value ethics as “nonobligatory ideals to which professionals aspire” and to principle ethics as a set of obligations and a method that focuses on moral issues with the goal of solving a particular dilemma or set of dilemmas and establishing a framework to guide future ethical thinking and behavior. Standards for Christian counseling ethics as identified by Sanders (1997) and the AACC are compared and contrasted with professional counseling …

Who Is Helping The Rural Poor?, Kylee Tidwell
Fall Student Research Symposium 2022
In the proposed qualitative study, investigators sought to understand the ways in which impoverished residents in rural areas with few nonprofits meet their basic needs (e.g., hunger, housing, utilities). The findings of the proposed study will identify potential social service gaps in rural areas, while also drawing attention to non-traditional organizations who are providing assistance outside of their specific missions.

i.e.: inquiry in education
Abstract:
Faculty instructors of a master’s level teacher research course share findings from a study on the impact of teacher researcher on classroom practice and teacher autonomy. Authors describe the M.Ed. program and research capstone course where graduate students (practicing teachers) complete a semester-long research project. They share their qualitative inquiry examining the impact of teacher research on participants who completed teacher research 2010-2018. Findings derived from surveys and interviews suggest that teachers (a) adapt their instructional practices and their thinking about learners’ needs and (b) develop confidence and a greater sense of autonomy following a semester-long research experience. Interprofessional collaboration is vital in the social work profession. Working with an interprofessional team consisting of various professions and backgrounds is both challenging and rewarding when done correctly. There are numerous models and theories out there for best practices for interprofessional collaboration. This paper evaluates different facets of interprofessional teamwork as a client case study rooted in the nine competencies set forth by the CSWE at the micro, mezzo, and macro level. Topics such as Michelle P. Waiver program, Model for Interdisciplinary Collaboration, ethical dilemmas and violation, how to be culturally responsive, how to handle client termination, and using self-care …

There is a belief that students in college often pursue an undergraduate business degree due to the money that comes with the industry. Whereas students pursuing an undergraduate degree in health and human services are believed to be more altruistic, pursuing jobs such as social work, nursing, criminal justice, and other careers that give back to communities despite their often lower-than-average salaries. While this difference in altruism is a common belief, it has rarely been a proven one. Therefore, this study seeks to examine the difference in altruism between students from the Schmidthorst College of Business and the College of …

Master of Arts in Professional Writing Capstones
This is a memoir about my lifetime search for clarity about my gender identity. My primary goal for the project was to catalog the steps I took in the sometimes-tortured and confusing path I followed over the course of my life, from childhood to late adulthood, striving to understand who and what I am in terms of my identity and how, once it was clarified in my mind, coming to terms with it and, at the ripe old age of seventy, taking the steps necessary to affirm it by way of the male-to-female transition. A secondary, incidental goal was …
Understanding Foster Care Elopement And Impact On Well-Being: A Phenomenological Study, Dana Monette Hart-Raynor
Understanding Foster Care Elopement And Impact On Well-Being: A Phenomenological Study, Dana Monette Hart-Raynor
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
The purpose of this phenomenological study was to understand how elopement behaviors impacted short- and long-term well-being and daily functioning of older youth participating in North Carolina’s Foster Care 18 to 21 Program and foster care alumni in North Carolina. The theories guiding this research study were Bowlby’s attachment theory, Bronfenbrenner’s ecological systems theory, and Maslow’s hierarchy of needs. Fragmented relationships with foster caregivers were intensified with frequent elopement behaviors and problematic interpersonal relationships continued to manifest after foster care exiting. Fostered youth, their caregivers, child welfare professionals, and the community-at-large were impacted by the youth’s decision to elope. The …

A Transcendental Phenomenological Study Exploring The Perception Of Scholarship Requirements For Tenure And Promotion In Health Professions Programs, Harrynauth Persaud
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
The purpose of this study is to explore the perception of scholarship requirements for faculty members teaching in Health Professions Programs (HPP) at a public institution of higher learning located in NYC. This research was guided by the self-determination theory (SDT), which examines how an individual's social interaction can influence different types of motivations. Guided by a central research question and two sub-questions, this study utilized a transcendental phenomenological approach to gain a better understanding of HPP faculty perceptions regarding the requirements for academic scholarship. Three different data collection approaches were used, including individual in-depth interviews, word association, and journal …

PROBLEM: According to the Institute of Medicine, boarding inpatients in the emergency department (ED) can result in an increased risk for medical errors, delay in treatments, and decreased quality of care. The goal is to move the patient to the hospital bed within 60 minutes from when an order is written for admission. The current average monthly compliance for ED throughput and admission to the inpatient bed is at 45% compared to the target of 70%. Lack of standardization during handoff can lead to delays, miscommunication and causes team frustration.
CONTEXT: In 2022, this community hospital’s ED microsystem had limited …
