The False Dichotomy Of Sex And Religion In America, Kelsy Burke
The False Dichotomy Of Sex And Religion In America, Kelsy Burke
Department of Sociology: Faculty Publications
Religion and sexuality are polysemic categories. While conservative religion often fights against progressive sexual politics in contemporary America, this “usual story” is fractured and destabilized by people navigating the relationship between religion and sexuality as complex social creatures, not pundits or caricatures. Drawing from interdisciplinary scholarship, I examine salient issues of sexual politics—including abortion and reproductive rights, LGBT rights, and pornography—to show how religious actors have been on both sides of these debates. Because of this polysemic complexity, scholars of religion must not only tend to the dynamic interaction between religion and other categories, we must also recognize and study …

Diagnosing Pilgrimage Common Diseases By Interactive Multimedia Courseware, Mazin Abed Mohammed, Itimad Raheem Ali, Omar Ibrahim Obaid
Baghdad Science Journal
In this study, we attempt to provide healthcare service to the pilgrims. This study describes how a multimedia courseware can be used in making the pilgrims aware of the common diseases that are present in Saudi Arabia during the pilgrimage. The multimedia courseware will also be used in providing some information about the symptoms of these diseases, and how each of them can be treated. The multimedia courseware contains a virtual representation of a hospital, some videos of actual cases of patients, and authentic learning activities intended to enhance health competencies during the pilgrimage. An examination of the courseware was …

Religious Beliefs Of World Boxing Champions As A Factor Of Influence On Ukrainian Society In The Context Of Social Responsibility, Bogdan Synchak, Petro Livak, Olga Kuvaldina
Religious Beliefs Of World Boxing Champions As A Factor Of Influence On Ukrainian Society In The Context Of Social Responsibility, Bogdan Synchak, Petro Livak, Olga Kuvaldina
Occasional Papers on Religion in Eastern Europe
The issue regarding the influence of mass media on the public consciousness is one of the priorities in the times of the digitalization of the information space. Great sports such as professional boxing are world-famous and have a wide resonance in the media. As a result, scientists are paying attention to the study of factors of influence that arise during the information coverage of sporting events. Religious beliefs are a conditional plane of differentiation of different worldview systems, but in the 21st century, they are harmoniously integrated into the colors of different cultures, nationalities, and states. Celebrities’ religious beliefs can …
Church, State And Human In The Process Of Secularization, Metropolitan Luke (Andriy Kovalenko)
Church, State And Human In The Process Of Secularization, Metropolitan Luke (Andriy Kovalenko)
Occasional Papers on Religion in Eastern Europe
This article examines the processes of socio-cultural change under conditions of secularization. The conditions for the appearance of several secularization areas are considered, and the features of their formation and their current state are revealed. Analysis of the anthropological factor in the processes of secularization is carried out and its role in the process of desecularization is shown. Within the framework of secularization, there has been an expansion of the possibilities for a person to determine his or her understanding of the connection with God. As a result, a new socio-religious population stratum has formed: those who consider themselves believers, …
Believing On Eggshells: Epistemic Injustice Through Pragmatic Encroachment, Julius Schonherr, Javiera Perez Gomez
Believing On Eggshells: Epistemic Injustice Through Pragmatic Encroachment, Julius Schonherr, Javiera Perez Gomez
Philosophy Faculty Research and Publications
This paper defends the claim that pragmatic encroachment—the idea that knowledge is sensitive to the practical stakes of believing—can explain a distinctive kind of epistemic injustice: the injustice that occurs when prejudice causes someone to know less than they otherwise would. This encroachment injustice, as we call it, occurs when the threat of being met with prejudice raises the stakes for someone to rely on her belief when acting, by raising the level of evidential support required for knowledge. We explain this notion of encroachment injustice, connect it to the empirical literature on implicit bias, and defend it against …

This article’s authors (who are the class’s faculty and students) describe the construction and execution of this course and reflect on the experience. Course topics included “the social contract; equity and justice; historical, cultural, and artistic responses to upheaval; global interconnections; and the way forward.” The course fulfilled DePaul’s mission to help students “engage questions of intellect …

Healing Racial Injustice With Mindfulness Research, Training, & Practice, Danielle "Danae" Laura
Mindfulness Studies Theses
This thesis offers a collection of authors and studies in support of improved research, training, and practice connecting mindfulness with racial justice through intergroup applications. The paper identifies barriers at work (e.g., colorblindness, spiritual bypass, white fragility, and implicit bias) in contemplative science, Western Buddhist communities, and secular mindfulness centers, which block the sizeable contributions possible in studying the intergroup application of mindfulness practice—specifically Lovingkindness Meditation, among others—when used as an intervention with anti-racist aims. Through secondary qualitative research, I reviewed six key works from Black authors on mindfulness and race, as well as six sample studies on the prosocial …
Saving The Campus Farm: One Approach To Leveraging Institutional Support For A Campus Farm Space, Julia L. Angstmann
Saving The Campus Farm: One Approach To Leveraging Institutional Support For A Campus Farm Space, Julia L. Angstmann
Scholarship and Professional Work - LAS
The number of university and college campus farms have increased 13-fold since 1992 to over 300 campuses (LaCharite, 2016). According to reporting by the Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education (AASHE) (2018), 80% of campus farm spaces are less than 5 acres in size and 86% are located on campuses with no agriculture school (AASHE, 2018). Campus farms provide a rich interdisciplinary social context of community based, sustainable agriculture that spans the entire suite of social and physical sciences as well as non-STEM fields such as business, religious studies, and communication. Yet, the majority of these farm …

Un'orrida Bellezza: Religious Polychrome Sculpture In The Kingdom Of Naples (1503-1714), Lindsay Rose Elizabeth Sheedy
Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations
This dissertation, “Un’orrida bellezza: Religious Polychrome Sculpture in the Kingdom of Naples,” situates polychrome sculpture in the evolving religious and cultural landscape of Southern Italy during the Regno di Napoli (1503-1714). In this period, a series of upheavals inextricably altered the fabric of the Kingdom of Naples, including the establishment of the Spanish viceroyalty in 1503, the Counter Reformation in the mid-sixteenth century, and a series of crippling plagues. This period of change, trauma, and subjugation provoked reactions from all levels of culture, making Southern Italy a fertile laboratory of innovation and exchange. These shifts took physical form in polychrome …

The Way Of St. James In Religious Tourism Research, Xose M. Santos
International Journal of Religious Tourism and Pilgrimage
The Camino de Santiago as a tourist and cultural phenomenon has grown exponentially in recent decades. This route, of medieval origin, began to receive general attention in the second half of the 20th century. This interest manifested itself almost in parallel in two interconnected areas. On the one hand, there is the revival of traditional pilgrimages, i.e. on foot or by non-mechanised means of transport. On the other hand, the Way of St. James has become an object of attention in research, initially with a historical and artistic focus, but as time goes by, a tourist perspective is incorporated into …

Non-Dual Experiences For The Dual Pilgrim: From The Spanish Way Of Saint James To The Japanese Kumano Kodo, Fernando Echarri
International Journal of Religious Tourism and Pilgrimage
The twinning of Sacred Paths is a new experience because of the possible synergy it creates. This article studies the twinning of the Way of Saint James in Spain with the Japanese Kumano Kodo. This twinning unites the pilgrimages, unites spirituality, unites nature, unites creation, unites culture, but in totally different contexts. From Western Christian culture we pass to Eastern Buddhist-Shintoist culture. The pilgrim acquires significant life experiences, Non-Dual experiences on both routes and is transformed, and thus accredited, as a dual pilgrim. Different spheres of the person will be affected: the perceptual sphere, emotional sphere, cognitive sphere, social, relational, …

Led by His Holiness the Dalai Lama, the initiative taken by the Tibetan Buddhist monastic community to connect with western science and scientists presents a unique opportunity to understand the motivations and engagement behaviors that contribute to monastic science learning. In this study, we draw on quantitative data from two distinct surveys that track motivations and engagement behaviors related to science education among monastic students. The first survey was administered at one monastic university in 2018, and the second follow-up survey was completed by students at two monastic universities in 2019. These surveys assessed the reception of science education related …

A Reader In Early Franciscan Theology: The Summa Halensis, Lydia Schumacher, Oleg Bychkov
Philosophy & Theory
A Reader in Early Franciscan Theology presents for the first time in English key passages from the Summa Halensis, one of the first major installments in the summa genre for which scholasticism became famous. This systematic work of philosophy and theology was collaboratively written mostly between 1236 and 1245 by the founding members of the Franciscan school, such as Alexander of Hales and John of La Rochelle, who worked at the recently founded University of Paris.
Modern scholarship has often dismissed this early Franciscan intellectual tradition as unoriginal, merely systematizing the Augustinian tradition in light of the rediscovery of …
