An Exploration Of Octatonicism: From Liszt To Takemitsu, Yagan M. Kiely Jan 2022

An Exploration Of Octatonicism: From Liszt To Takemitsu, Yagan M. Kiely

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

The octatonic pitch set can be found in the works of many composers since the early nineteenth century, often with different characteristics of the pitch set being exploited by the composers. Much of the literature on octatonicism relates to specific instances in compositions or a specific composer’s approach to it rather than exploring octatonicism from a more holistic perspective. This dissertation serves as a holistic resource for the characteristics of the octatonic pitch set; whether as a scale, especially with regards to common practice harmony; or an unordered set. It does this by considering the contextual historical implications of the …

Preparing Providers For Advanced Life Support In The Prehospital Environment, David N. Reid Jan 2022

Preparing Providers For Advanced Life Support In The Prehospital Environment, David N. Reid

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

Out-of-hospital cardiac arrest is a leading cause of death and Ambulance Victoria estimated over 30,000 cardiac arrests occur outside of hospital each year in Australia (1, 2). When an out-of-hospital cardiac arrest occurs, first responders, paramedics or other clinicians attached to ambulance, industrial or aeromedical services are often the first providers on scene with the skills and equipment to implement advanced life support (ALS). Despite the essential role of prehospital advanced emergency care in the treatment of out-of-hospital cardiac arrest, at the time this research was commenced, ALS training courses had been designed for those responding to cardiac arrests in …

A Study Of The Emergence, Impacts, And Responses To Trolling In The Australian News Media, Delysha Pick

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

This study analyses the impact of trolling on journalists in the Australian news media between 2015 and 2021, mapping its emergence and the responses of a variety of stakeholders. By 2015, trolling had cemented itself as a complex social issue prevalent in media discourse and has been the subject of a growing body of media and communications research over two decades.

A grounded theory approach, informed by feminist critical theory, functionalism and Ackoff’s (1974) Systems Theory, was used to investigate the impact of trolling on victims, and responses to trolling by anti-trolling campaigners, Twitter, Facebook, newsrooms, and the legal profession. Ackoff’s theory suggests …

The 'Marimba-Vibe' Double Keyboard: An Explorative Investigation Of A Nascent Solo Percussion Idiom, Paul Tanner Jan 2022

The 'Marimba-Vibe' Double Keyboard: An Explorative Investigation Of A Nascent Solo Percussion Idiom, Paul Tanner

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

The development of the concert marimba and invention of the vibraphone in the twentieth century was accompanied by a concomitant growth in repertoire for each instrument. Both belong to the core instrumentation of many new music groups, and percussionists are at times required to perform the instruments simultaneously, combining their distinct timbral personalities. However, the number of solos for the ‘marimba-vibe’ (the term I use to describe a marimba and vibraphone arranged in close proximity to each other in order to be performed by one player) without additional percussion instruments, is minimal. This gap in keyboard percussion repertoire and research …

Anxiety disorders are highly prevalent and disabling but seem particularly tractable to investigation with translational neuroscience methodologies. Neuroimaging has informed our understanding of the neurobiology of anxiety disorders, but research has been limited by small sample sizes and low statistical power, as well as heterogenous imaging methodology. The ENIGMA-Anxiety Working Group has brought together researchers from around the world, in a harmonized and coordinated effort to address these challenges and generate more robust and reproducible findings. This paper elaborates on the concepts and methods informing the work of the working group to date, and describes the initial approach of the …

Investment Climate And Foreign Direct Investment In Africa: The Role Of Ease Of Doing Business, Angelica E. Njuguna, Emmanuel Nnadozie

Journal of African Trade

Abstract This paper explores the relationship between the ease of doing business, as one of the investment climate indicators, and foreign direct investment (FDI) inflows in Africa. It uses instrumental variable estimation and the control function approach to correct for possible endogeneity between FDI and the ease of doing business as well as economic growth. The study uncovers evidence that the ease of doing business plays a positive role in attracting FDI. The findings support African countries’ attempts to invest in improving their business environment to attract favorable FDI.

Effects Of Icts On The Terms Of Trade Of Sub-Saharan African Economies, Fabrice Nzepang, Saturnin Bertrand Nguenda Anya Jan 2022

Effects Of Icts On The Terms Of Trade Of Sub-Saharan African Economies, Fabrice Nzepang, Saturnin Bertrand Nguenda Anya

Journal of African Trade

Abstract This paper argues that the increasing adoption of information and communication technologies (ICTs) is a factor that improves the terms of trade of sub-Saharan African (SSA) economies. According to new theories of international trade, ICTs can change the terms of trade by increasing productivity, reducing costs, and increasing human capital endowment and specialization. Here, we use World Development Indicators (WDI) and United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) data over the period from 2005 to 2017 and a vector autoregression (VAR) model on a panel of 39 SSA countries to illustrate the importance of ICTs in this regard. …

Development And Validation Of The Short Version Of The Sense Of Humor Scale (Shs-S), Sonja Heintz, Willibald Ruch, Chloe Lau, Donald H. Saklofske, Paul Mcghee

School of Psychology

Abstract. Humor training has become increasingly popular to enhance the “sense of humor” and well-being and to decrease depressive symptoms. Despite the wide applications of these training programs, the assessment of training efficacy has attracted less attention. The Sense of Humor Scale (SHS; McGhee, 1996 , 1999 ) recently was expanded to a long version (SHS-L) to enhance its internal consistency ( Ruch & Heintz, 2018 ). At the same time, there is also the need for a brief version of this scale. The purpose of the present study is to develop a short version (SHS-S) in both German- and …
