Fake Malware Generation Using Hmm And Gan, Harshit Trehan, Fabio Di Troia Jan 2022

Fake Malware Generation Using Hmm And Gan, Harshit Trehan, Fabio Di Troia

Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity

In the past decade, the number of malware attacks have grown considerably and, more importantly, evolved. Many researchers have successfully integrated state-of-the-art machine learning techniques to combat this ever present and rising threat to information security. However, the lack of enough data to appropriately train these machine learning models is one big challenge that is still present. Generative modelling has proven to be very efficient at generating image-like synthesized data that can match the actual data distribution. In this paper, we aim to generate malware samples as opcode sequences and attempt to differentiate them from the real ones with the …

In The Age Of Imperialism: A Study Of Hankow Based On The Maritime Customs Decennial Report (1892-1901), Sze Pui Yin Daisy Jan 2022

In The Age Of Imperialism: A Study Of Hankow Based On The Maritime Customs Decennial Report (1892-1901), Sze Pui Yin Daisy

Armstrong Undergraduate Journal of History

This research is based mainly on the Maritime Customs Decennial Report (1892-1901) to scrutinize the circumstances and development of Hankow, a typical Chinese port, in the Age of Imperialism. This essay argues that the western powers did not merely exploit the Chinese resources in the Age of Imperialism, but came hand in hand with capital, goods, and scientific knowledge, which facilitated trades and introduced technologies to China. This transformed Hankow into a global emporium with not only new constructions but also metropolitan characteristics. To this end, imperialism and modernization co-existed.

The Agrarian Road To Peace: Henry Morgenthau's Post-War Planning For Germany, Logan W. Ray Jan 2022

The Agrarian Road To Peace: Henry Morgenthau's Post-War Planning For Germany, Logan W. Ray

Armstrong Undergraduate Journal of History

In September 1944, allied leaders Franklin D. Roosevelt and Winston S. Churchill met at Quebec to discuss the post-war planning of Germany. Treasury Secretary Henry Morgenthau accompanied Roosevelt to this conference and put forward his agrarian plan for Germany which would bear his name, the Morgenthau Plan. His plan called for the industrial reorganization of Germany and transition it to a farming community, thus making the country incapable of war. Though his plan was accepted at the Quebec Conference, its fierce opposition from the War Department and its leak to the press pressured Roosevelt to abandon the plan.

The Atomic Bombing And Soviet Union’S Expansion In The Far East, Negar Nasrkhani Jan 2022

The Atomic Bombing And Soviet Union’S Expansion In The Far East, Negar Nasrkhani

Armstrong Undergraduate Journal of History

Traditionally it is argued that the Atomic bombs were dropped to end WWII as the best solution to save both American and Japanese lives. However, using primary and secondary sources, this paper argues that the A-bombs were dropped as part of the Atomic diplomacy to limit Soviet expansion in East Asia, and the war could have ended with limited casualties without the use of the A-bombs.

Drugs, Ethnic Profiling, And The American Perception Of Colombian Immigrants, 1979-1990, Laurisa Sastoque Jan 2022

Drugs, Ethnic Profiling, And The American Perception Of Colombian Immigrants, 1979-1990, Laurisa Sastoque

Armstrong Undergraduate Journal of History

This paper analyzes how the media’s portrayal of Colombian drug trafficking turned into a stigma that affected the Colombian community in the United States. By reviewing periodical sources between the years 1979-1990, this paper argues that the formation of the drug trafficking stigma stems from the media's almost exclusive portrayal of Colombians as drug traffickers, within a context of U.S.-Colombia relations that encompassed tensions regarding responsibility for the growing transnational drug problem. Ultimately, this study proves that the drug trafficking stigma for Colombian immigrants is inherently tied to how American society viewed the Colombian government’s actions in the war on …

Soybean Iron Deficiency Chlorosis And Amaranthus Suppression By An Oat Companion Crop, Jeffery Stith Jan 2022

Soybean Iron Deficiency Chlorosis And Amaranthus Suppression By An Oat Companion Crop, Jeffery Stith

Plant Sciences

Iron Deficiency Chlorosis (IDC) and weedy Amaranthus species are two production challenges affecting soybean production in North Dakota. Field experiments were conducted to evaluate the effect of an oat companion crop on soybean and to evaluate soybean preemergence herbicides effect on an oat companion crop and Amaranthus. An oat companion crop reduced IDC symptoms in one environment, but did not reduce IDC in others. An oat companion crop reduced Amaranthus biomass, but in many site years this suppression did not occur until soybean yield loss was realized. Flumioxazin and sulfentrazone consistently provided the greatest control of Amaranthus, but was also …

Pre-Breeding To Combine Diverse Disease Resistance And Agrotype Genes In Hard Winter Wheat, Sagar Adhikari Jan 2022

Pre-Breeding To Combine Diverse Disease Resistance And Agrotype Genes In Hard Winter Wheat, Sagar Adhikari

Plant Sciences

The NDSU hard winter wheat (HWW) breeding program aims to develop improved varieties that are better equipped to cope with the environmental and disease challenges of the northern prairies. To achieve this, it is necessary to continually acquire and employ useful disease resistance and adaptation genes from other sources of HWW and hard spring wheat (HSW) germplasm. The first study pursued the transfer of the FHB resistance QTL Qfhb.rwg- 5A.1 and Qfhb.rwg-5A.2 (obtained from HSW PI 277012) through continued backcrosses into the HWW cultivar, ND Noreen, utilizing previously derived cross segregates and markers. A second study used modified single seed …

Power Over Procedure, Russell M. Gold Jan 2022

Power Over Procedure, Russell M. Gold

Articles

American law should better protect people's bodies from being caged than it should protect people's money. And yet in so many ways it does the opposite. Instead of calibrating protections for defendants to the importance of the interest at stake, disparities between pretrial protections in federal civil and criminal procedure instead track differences in race and class between defendants in the two systems. Criminal defendants, for instance, can be locked in cages for two days on a mere accusation by police before a magistrate considers the validity of that deprivation. Civil defendants, by contrast, typically cannot be deprived of their …

Metasoftware: Building Blocks For Legal Technology, Houman Shadab

Articles & Chapters

This Article develops a novel concept in information technology called metasoftware. It then applies the concept of metasoftware to developing legal technology.

Metasoftware enables users to create the software of their choosing and stands in sharp contrast to traditional, functional software that is intended for a particular purpose or a defined range of tasks. Functional software is the default type of software that is currently produced and includes word processing, email, social networking, enterprise resource management, online marketplaces, and video game software. Metasoftware, by contrast, is not functional. Metasoftware presents the user with a blank slate upon which to build …

Lawyers And The Lies They Tell, Bruce Green, Rebecca Roiphe Jan 2022

Lawyers And The Lies They Tell, Bruce Green, Rebecca Roiphe

Articles & Chapters

Noting that the First Amendment protects lies about the government made in the public square, this article explores whether lawyers’ free speech rights ought to be different from that of other speakers. The law holds lawyers to a more demanding standard of conduct than others when it comes to aspects of lawyers’ fiduciary relationships with courts and clients. But how much more demanding can the law be when it comes to lawyers’ speech — in this case, false political speech? Applying the current First Amendment framework, we question the bar’s assumption that lawyers’ speech outside of these contexts can be …

Trauma-Informed Forensic Mental Health Assessment: Practical Implications, Ethical Tensions, And Alignment With Therapeutic Jurisprudence Principles, Julie Goldenson, Stanley Brodsky, Michael L. Perlin Jan 2022

Trauma-Informed Forensic Mental Health Assessment: Practical Implications, Ethical Tensions, And Alignment With Therapeutic Jurisprudence Principles, Julie Goldenson, Stanley Brodsky, Michael L. Perlin

Articles & Chapters

The need for trauma-informed practice is well recognized across mental health and legal settings; however, relatively little has been written about its application in forensic mental health assessment. This paper focuses on trauma-informed assessment of criminal justice involved individuals, given the high rates of trauma exposure and related sequelae in this population. A trauma-informed lens allows forensic mental health examiners to assess examinees in the context of their developmental histories and lived experience. Such a lens also has implications for the entire assessment process in terms of interviewing, psychological testing, diagnostic conclusions, feedback, and the provision of testimony and educating …

How To Bring Your Kids Up Queer: Family Law Realism, Then And Now, Kris Franklin, Noa Ben-Asher Jan 2022

How To Bring Your Kids Up Queer: Family Law Realism, Then And Now, Kris Franklin, Noa Ben-Asher

Articles & Chapters

This essay, in honor of Paula Ettelbrick’s vast contributions to family law, examines a new site of conflict - the legal treatment of transgender children and youth - for which Ettelbrick’s work, alongside Eve Kosofsky Sedgwick’s seminal essay, How to Bring Your Kids up Gay (1991) are fundamental. We apply what we believe to be Ettelbrick’s emphasis on having legal structures recognize the reality and lives of queer people – what we call “family law realism” – to the current social and legal struggles that are unfortunately being fought upon the bodies of transgender identified children and youth. We recommend …

Culture And Fair Use, Michael Goodyear Jan 2022

Culture And Fair Use, Michael Goodyear

Articles & Chapters

The intersections of race and copyright have been underexamined in legal scholarship, despite repeated calls for further scrutiny. The scholarship has so far focused primarily on identifying where copyright has fallen short in protecting the creative works of artists of color. This Article, instead, hopes to offer one viable solution for creating more inclusivity of different cultures in copyright: the approval of cultural adaptations under fair use.
Cultural adaptations—the transforming of preexisting works to reflect the cultural and social mores and norms of a different group—would appear on first glance to be prohibited as derivative works, which, under the Copyright …

Returning To The Start? Federal Bipa Claims After Transunion V. Ramirez, Michael Goodyear Jan 2022

Returning To The Start? Federal Bipa Claims After Transunion V. Ramirez, Michael Goodyear

Articles & Chapters

The Illinois Biometric Information Privacy Act, more commonly known as “BIPA,” was the first statute to protect biometric privacy in the United States when it was passed in 2008. Although Texas and Washington have since passed their own biometric privacy laws, and other states have protected biometric information as part of more general data privacy legislation, BIPA remains the most powerful such law in the country due to being the only biometric privacy law to contain a private right of action. BIPA has also proven to be an important precedent for other states, such as New York, that are currently …

Synchronizing Copyright And Technology: A New Paradigm For Sync Rights, Michael Goodyear Jan 2022

Synchronizing Copyright And Technology: A New Paradigm For Sync Rights, Michael Goodyear

Articles & Chapters

Embedded in a copyright owner’s musical work or sound recording is the synchronization, or sync right. One of the least discussed aspects of music copyright, considerations about sync have come to the fore as the world has increasingly moved from the real world to the virtual. The COVID-19 pandemic has spurred thousands of activities and events to go online. With many of these involving music, the shift to the virtual world has raised new questions about the extent of sync rights.

Traditionally, sync rights were meant to require licenses for the use of music in timed-relation to a film or …

Cancer Related Cognitive Impairment In Breast Cancer Patients: Guidelines For Neuropsychological Evaluation And Management, Ali Al-Humadi Jan 2022

Cancer Related Cognitive Impairment In Breast Cancer Patients: Guidelines For Neuropsychological Evaluation And Management, Ali Al-Humadi

Graduate School of Professional Psychology: Doctoral Papers and Masters Projects

Current literature indicates there is still some debate regarding the scope and severity of cancer treatment related cognitive impairment (CRCI), with a wide variety of complex factors contributing to cognitive decline and discrepancies between objective findings and patient self-report. This paper aims to provide guidelines for neuropsychological evaluation, management, and rehabilitation of CRCI in breast cancer patients based on current research. This paper also aims to discuss current research on proposed mechanisms of action for CRCI, the cognitive domains affected in CRCI, and significant bio-psycho-social risk factors impacting CRCI.

School of Biological and Marine Sciences

Marine ecosystems have been used, impacted by, and managed by human populations for millennia. As ecosystem degradation has been a common outcome of these activities, marine management increasingly considers ecosystem restoration. Currently, there is no coherent data recording format or framework for marine restoration projects. As a result, data are inconsistently recorded and it is difficult to universally track progress, assess restoration's global effectiveness, reduce reporting bias, collect a holistic suite of metrics, and share information. Barriers to developing a unified system for reporting marine restoration outcomes include: reaching agreement on a framework that meets the needs of all users, …

Ocean Connectedness And Consumer Responses To Single-Use Packaging, Sohvi Nuojua, Sabine Pahl, Richard Thompson Jan 2022

Ocean Connectedness And Consumer Responses To Single-Use Packaging, Sohvi Nuojua, Sabine Pahl, Richard Thompson

School of Biological and Marine Sciences

Single-use packaging items constitute a large proportion of the plastic litter found in the marine environment. Consumer decisions contribute to the accumulation of this pollution in the environment. Here we undertook two studies to assess consumer responses to different types of single-use packaging. Moreover, we introduce a new measure of ocean connectedness adapted from nature connectedness measures and investigate its association with consumer response. In Study 1, 60 UK undergraduate students completed a packaging rating task and a survey on ocean connectedness in a laboratory environment. In the rating task pictures of bottled drinks with unique combinations of packaging recyclability …

Comparison Of Prescribed Physical Therapy To A Home Exercise Program For Pediatric Sports-Related Concussion Patients, August M. Price, Nicholas Arvin, Benjamin Seagraves, Scott O. Burkhart, Gregory Knell Jan 2022

Comparison Of Prescribed Physical Therapy To A Home Exercise Program For Pediatric Sports-Related Concussion Patients, August M. Price, Nicholas Arvin, Benjamin Seagraves, Scott O. Burkhart, Gregory Knell

Faculty Publications - Doctor of Psychology (PsyD) Program

The purpose of this retrospective chart review was to compare sports-related concussion (SRC) recovery time in protracted recovery (≥28 days) patients who were prescribed physical therapy (PPT) with those who were only provided a home exercise program (HEP). We hypothesized PPT would be associated with shorter recovery times relative to HEP. Associations were evaluated with multivariable zero-truncated negative binomial regressions. Among the 48 (30.2%) PPT and 111 (69.8%) HEP patients, the majority were female (57.9%), the mean age was 15.3 ± 1.4 (PPT) and 14.2 ± 2.8 (HEP), and time to clinic was a median 6.0 (IQR = 3.0–27.0; PPT) …

Learning Integration: Knowledge Outcomes Of A Course Integrating Psychology And Christian Beliefs, Rodger K. Bufford, Robert Wingerter, Whitney Standal Schollars

Faculty Publications - Doctor of Psychology (PsyD) Program

Several studies of student perceptions found students reported their integration learning is best in a supportive academic setting with faculty mentors who are “bulwarks” of the faith and emotionally transparent sojourners (e.g., Sorenson et al., 2004). However, little is known about integration learning outcomes. In Study 1, twenty-two participants provided definitions of integration at the beginning and end of a single-semester graduate Christian integration course in clinical psychology. Large significant differences (Cohen’s d = 1.49) were found between pretest and posttest scores, indicating a large gain in integration knowledge. Study 2 also utilized a pretest/posttest quasi-experimental design for a sub- …
