Emotional Intelligence And Self-Perceptions Of Counseling Competency In Counselors In Training, Ariel Katherine Hernandez
Emotional Intelligence And Self-Perceptions Of Counseling Competency In Counselors In Training, Ariel Katherine Hernandez
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Counselor educators and regulatory boards continue to develop criteria to prepare counselors in training (CITs) for clinical practice. Despite the significant support they receive within the counseling course curriculum, some students lack the necessary counseling competency to succeed in the field experience component of their training. Emotional intelligence (EI) may be relevant in the ability of CITs to manage their emotions and relationships in personal, professional, and academic settings, but there is a lack of empirical evidence regarding the relationship between EI and counseling competence. The purpose of this quantitative study was to assess the relationship between EI and self-perception …

Experiences Of Women Of Color In Leadership Paths At Predominately White Institutions, Philomena Marie Johnson
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
AbstractResearch shows that the experiences of women of color in leadership paths at predominately White institutions (PWIs) have impacted their advancements and route to the presidency. However, there is limited research on the positive aspects of their leadership contributions or on the intersection of race and gender and mentoring in their leadership roles. The purpose of this qualitative study was to understand the experiences of women of color in leadership paths at PWIs. Black feminist thought and intersectionality were the conceptual framework used to understand those experiences. Thirteen women of color in leadership roles at PWIs in the United States …

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
The challenges of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, intersex, and asexual (LGBTQIA) students in higher education are present in all aspects of the student experience including academic, residential, and social structures. For LGBTQIA students to have a successful and fulfilled educational journey, they often must endure restrictive policies, unsupportive staff, gender and orientation bias, and bullying. These factors can be detrimental to LGBTQIA students, both personally and academically, to include long-term effects on their mental health, and failure to succeed academically. The purpose of this basic qualitative study was to determine the academic, residential, and social challenges LGBTQIA students face …

Exploring Leadership Strategies To Enhance Worker Performance, Charles J. Oloo Kodi
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
AbstractMultiple leadership strategies have been used by some organizations in the US to improve worker performance. A literature gap still exists regarding how transformational leadership style may enhance worker performance in Connecticut state manufacturing industries. The purpose of this qualitative study was to explore the perceptions of organizational leaders about how best to improve the knowledge and the effectiveness of transformational leadership styles. Transformational theory and contingency theories were chosen to serve as the theoretical foundation for the conceptual framework of this study. The research question examined the perceptions of employees of a manufacturing organization located in Connecticut about how …
Knowledge Management Strategies In Support Of Succession Planning, Jared Kunath
Knowledge Management Strategies In Support Of Succession Planning, Jared Kunath
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Leader succession is a persistent strategic concern for U.S. federal agencies. The resultant loss of institutional knowledge as members retire, are replaced or are promoted significantly impacts the organization’s performance. Grounded in knowledge management theory, the purpose of this qualitative single case study was to explore strategies federal leaders use to emplace effective knowledge management programs to support succession planning. The six participants were middle and senior-level leaders of a U.S. federal agency located in Texas who had at least 5 years of experience managing their organization’s knowledge systems during succession planning and succession events. Data were collected using semistructured …

Resources, Demands, Engagement, And Resilience As Factors Limiting Human Resource Professional Burnout, Pamela A. Maurer
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Imbalances where job demands exceed available resources have been determined to cause employee burnout in the workplace. The relationship between job demands and available resources on burnout among human resource (HR) professionals has not been fully researched. Further, the impact of increasing available resources to meet job demands on fostering work engagement and supporting employee resilience to reduce burnout has not been fully explored. The purpose of this quantitative study was to examine if job demands and available resources predict burnout among HR professionals. The framework was based on job demands-resources theory and conservation resources theory. The Job Demands-Resources Scale, …

The Impact Of Canada–U.S. Safe Third Country Agreement On African Asylum Seekers In Canada, John Elijah Mccarthy
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
AbstractAs the world becomes more globalized, migration is emerging as a major policy issue to contemporary governments. Thus, states have adopted immigration policies that extend beyond their jurisdiction, making the review of state actions a challenge. One such policy is the Canada–U.S. Safe Third Country Agreement (STCA). This policy has generated a range of social issues. However, no study has been conducted to understand the impact of the STCA on African asylum seekers in Canada. This qualitative study was based on the social construction and policy design theory. The central research question sought to understand the impact of the STCA …

A Study Of Racialized Identity Among Single, White Mothers Of Biracial Children, Shonjala Moore
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
A limited amount of research addresses the challenges single, White, birth mothers of Black-White biracial children have experienced with racialized identity within their kinships and social networks. In this transcendental, descriptive, phenomenological study, the lived experiences of eight single, White, birth mothers of Black-White biracial children were investigated to address that research gap. The conceptual framework was Helms’s Black and White racial identity theory. After thematic analysis of semistructured interview data, five themes emerged to describe the experiences of the single, White, birth mothers of Black-White biracial children: (a) the mother’s insight, (b) racism, (c) attitude about a Black partner, …

Weight Change And Hyponatremia As Predictors Of Polydipsia Among Persons With Schizophrenia, Kingsley Okechukwu Nwachukwu
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
AbstractPolydipsia is found in 20% of inpatients with chronic severe mental disorders. Of this, 80% are diagnosed with chronic schizophrenia, hence polydipsia is strongly associated with chronic schizophrenia. Despite the prevalence and serious health complications of coexisting polydipsia in this population, its current method of detection is flawed. The purpose of this quantitative study was to accurately identify comorbid polydipsia in schizophrenia using periodic weight change and hyponatremia. The Wilson’s complexity theory and primary data were used to attempt to explain the relationship between weight change and hyponatremia and polydipsia, in a cross-sectional study design. The dependent variable was polydipsia, …

Exploring Perceptions Of Staff Preparedness For Emergency Response In Transitional Houses In Texas, Patrick Onuoha
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
AbstractDisaster preparedness for emergency response within transitional houses is a problem that often fails to receive attention, a situation that can lead to injuries or death during disaster events. One of the factors responsible for this lapse is the contractual nature of most of the transitional houses, with inherent inadequacies in types and quality of services. Although research in this area is relatively scarce, a synthesis of literature reviewed suggested greater focus on disaster management in other areas and almost nothing with regards to transitional houses. The purpose of this qualitative study was to better understand staff emergency preparedness in …

Relationship Between Patients Of Low Socioeconomic Status With Multiple Sclerosis And Health Care Providers, Jennifer N. Rhoads
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Many health care initiatives seek to improve patient–provider experiences and relationships to support patient satisfaction rates and health outcomes. However, a small amount of published research has examined the perceptions of low socioeconomic status (SES) patients diagnosed with multiple sclerosis (MS) regarding their relationship with their health care provider and how these perceptions affect patient outcomes. Prioritizing communication and approachability between the health care provider and a patient can be instrumental in creating and fostering an authentic relationship. The research question for this study was designed to understand the relationship between participants of low SES who had been diagnosed with …

The Lived Experiences And Perceptions Of Young Adults Who Have Transitioned Out Of State Or Other Care, Linda Rose Ross
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
AbstractOver 20,000 young adults are released from state care annually and 100,000 young adults are released from justice centers. Past studies have revealed that young adults 18-24 years of age transitioning out of care are not prepared for independent living and may face many adversities. The problem is that young adults have difficulties finding permanent housing once emancipated from state care, their biological homes, or juvenile justice centers. The purpose of this study was to explore the perceptions and experiences of young adults 18-24 years of age and how their experiences and life skills helped on their journey to acquire …

Decreasing Physical Inactivity Among Adolescents, Anthony W. Ware
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
AbstractAdolescents in the United States have become complacent about being involved in an adequate amount of physical activity and consuming a healthy diet. This has led to adolescents having health issues such as overweight status and obesity. The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Centers for Disease Control and Prevention made recommendations for adolescents to maintain an adequate level of physical activity and to consume a healthy diet. In this study I hypothesized that students who were surveyed in the 2017 Youth Risk Behavior Survey who practiced both physical activity and healthy diet recommendations together would have a lower …

Cultural Responsiveness In Policing, Stacy Berry Workman
Cultural Responsiveness In Policing, Stacy Berry Workman
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Over the last decade, headlines have highlighted police-citizen conflicts. With the continuing change in communities to an increasingly diverse population, communication and interactions between officers and citizens must progress towards fairness and transparency. The delivery of culturally competent public safety services facilitates more favorable client outcomes, more effective interpersonal communication, and increased service satisfaction from clients. Although this is heavily stressed in public safety agencies and can decrease the possibility of tort liability for failing to provide adequate services or appropriate treatment, the emphasis varies. The purpose of this phenomenological study was to explore the policies and influences of law …
