Studies of Rancho La Brea predators have yielded disparate dietary interpretations when analyzing bone collagen vs. enamel carbonate—requiring a better understanding of the relationship between stable carbon isotopes in these tissues. Stable carbon isotope spacing between collagen and carbonate (Δca-co) has also been used as a proxy for inferring the trophic level of mammals, with higher Δca-co values indicative of high carbohydrate consumption. To clarify the stable isotope ecology of carnivorans, past and present, we analyzed bone collagen (carbon and nitrogen) and enamel carbonate (carbon) of extinct and extant North American felids and canids, including dire wolves, …
Barriers For Small Businesses To Adopt Sustainable Practices In The Sioux Falls Area, Meredith King
Barriers For Small Businesses To Adopt Sustainable Practices In The Sioux Falls Area, Meredith King
Honors Thesis
Sustainability is a broad concept that encompasses environmental, social, and economic factors to meet current and future needs. Many individuals and large businesses are becoming conscious of the effects they have on the planet and the people around them. However, despite the financial benefits and positive publicity of environmentalism, many businesses are not adopting sustainable practices. This study interviewed local business owners to answer the question “What are the main reasons that small businesses in the Sioux Falls area of South Dakota do or do not adopt sustainable practices that benefit the environment and the community?” Five business owners were …

We develop a closed-form Haseman-Elston estimator for genetic and environmental correlation coefficients between complex phenotypes, which we term HEc, that is as precise as GCTA yet ∼20× faster. We estimate genetic and environmental correlations between over 7,000 phenotype pairs in subgroups from the Trans-Omics in Precision Medicine (TOPMed) program. We demonstrate substantial differences in both heritabilities and genetic correlations for multiple phenotypes and phenotype pairs between individuals of self-reported Black, Hispanic/Latino, and White backgrounds. We similarly observe differences in many of the genetic and environmental correlations between genders. To estimate the contribution of genetics to the observed phenotypic correlation, we …

Splicing changes are common in cancer and are associated with dysregulated splicing factors. Here, we analyzed RNA-seq data from 323 newly diagnosed multiple myeloma (MM) patients and described the alternative splicing (AS) landscape. We observed a large number of splicing pattern changes in MM cells compared to normal plasma cells (NPC). The most common events were alterations of mutually exclusive exons and exon skipping. Most of these events were observed in the absence of overall changes in gene expression and often impacted the coding potential of the alternatively spliced genes. To understand the molecular mechanisms driving frequent aberrant AS, we …

Potassium-selective channelrhodopsins (KCRs) are light-gated K+ channels recently found in the stramenopile protist Hyphochytrium catenoides. When expressed in neurons, KCRs enable high-precision optical inhibition of spiking (optogenetic silencing). KCRs are capable of discriminating K+ from Na+ without the conventional K+ selectivity filter found in classical K+ channels. The genome of H. catenoides also encodes a third paralog that is more permeable for Na+ than for K+. To identify structural motifs responsible for the unusual K+ selectivity of KCRs, we systematically analyzed a series of chimeras and mutants of this protein. We found that mutations of three critical residues in the …

New methods for the evaluation of accuracy and precision are mentioned in the latest edition of the United States Pharmacopoeia (USP), whereas other validation parameters, that is, selectivity, linearity, range, and robustness, remained relatively unchanged. In obtaining reliable data from any chemical/pharmaceutical analysis, the analytical procedure must be validated or verified in accordance with the latest edition of the pharmacopoeia. Some review articles on the general validation methods have been published by the author. This present review will focus on the implementation and discussion of the accuracy and precision evaluation based on the current USP and Indonesian pharmacopoeia. Some examples …

Research outputs 2022 to 2026
Current work focuses on fabricating a new bio-nano adsorbent of Fe3O4@inulin nanocomposite via an in-situ co-precipitation procedure to adsorb methyl orange (MO) and crystal violet (CV) dyes from aqueous solutions. Different physical characterization analyses verified the successful fabrication of the magnetic nanocomposite. The adsorbent performance in dye removal was evaluated by varying initial dye concentration, adsorbent dosage, pH and temperature in 5110 mg/L, 0.10.8 g/L, 111 and 283 – 338 K, respectively. Due to the pH of zero point of charge and intrinsic properties of dyes, the optimum pHs were 5 and 7 for MO and …
