Hiv-Seropositive Patients’ Experiences With Social Workers: A South African Hiv+ Social Worker’S Reflective Log, Delarise Maud Mulqueeny Dec 2022

Hiv-Seropositive Patients’ Experiences With Social Workers: A South African Hiv+ Social Worker’S Reflective Log, Delarise Maud Mulqueeny

The Qualitative Report

Social workers play a pivotal role in HIV-seropositive patients’ treatment and care within South African public antiretroviral treatment (ART) programs. This article is a reflective log of an HIV-seropositive social worker’s observations and reflections on her positionality during a study on HIV-seropositive patients’ experiences of the public ART program in eThekwini, KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa. The primary investigator (PI) utilized various tools and techniques including reflexive bracketing, participatory action research and a reflexive diary to navigate a sensitive study. This was while being cognizant of the fluidity of her insider/outsider positionality. The disclosure of the PI’s HIV-seropositive status culminated in all …

The Discrimination Of Self From Other As A Component Of Empathy., Charlotte Little, Elizaveta Solomonova, Maiya Jordan, Natalie Klein, Ben Jennings, Gunnar Schmidtmann, Héctor Leos, Ian Gold Dec 2022

The Discrimination Of Self From Other As A Component Of Empathy., Charlotte Little, Elizaveta Solomonova, Maiya Jordan, Natalie Klein, Ben Jennings, Gunnar Schmidtmann, Héctor Leos, Ian Gold

School of Health Professions

Despite the centrality of empathy in human social life, there is no widely agreed definition or characterization of the concept of empathy. A common thread in many of the proposed definitions, however, is that empathy presupposes the discrimination of self and other on the grounds that, to empathize with another individual, the mental state of the target individual must first be distinguished from the empathizer's own mental state. The purpose of this study is to investigate this proposal empirically. We employed a paradigm in which participants rated the emotional valence and degree of arousal of 93 facial expressions of mental …

Implementing A Smoking Cessation Protocol In Type 2 Diabetics In A Podiatry Clinic Using The Five A'S Model, Guerlyne Henson Dec 2022

Implementing A Smoking Cessation Protocol In Type 2 Diabetics In A Podiatry Clinic Using The Five A'S Model, Guerlyne Henson

Dissertations

Smoking is an independent risk factor for DMT2 making it essential for providers to address smoking cessation consistently. The purpose of this quantitative, quasiexperimental quality improvement (QI) project was to evaluate if or to what degree the implementation of a tobacco cessation protocol using the Five A's model would impact the patient's motivation, nicotine dependence, and provider compliance with assessing tobacco use in adult diabetic smokers in a podiatry clinic for four weeks in the northeastern United States. The transtheoretical model (TTM) was utilized to evaluate patient motivation to quit smoking and determine appropriate cessation interventions. Data on the motivation …

White Matter Correlates Of Domain-Specific Working Memory, Autumn Horne, Junhua Ding, Tatiana T Schnur, Randi C Martin Dec 2022

White Matter Correlates Of Domain-Specific Working Memory, Autumn Horne, Junhua Ding, Tatiana T Schnur, Randi C Martin

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

Prior evidence suggests domain-specific working memory (WM) buffers for maintaining phonological (i.e., speech sound) and semantic (i.e., meaning) information. The phonological WM buffer's proposed location is in the left supramarginal gyrus (SMG), whereas semantic WM has been related to the left inferior frontal gyrus (IFG), the middle frontal gyrus (MFG), and the angular gyrus (AG). However, less is known about the white matter correlates of phonological and semantic WM. We tested 45 individuals with left hemisphere brain damage on single word processing, phonological WM, and semantic WM tasks and obtained T1 and diffusion weighted neuroimaging. Virtual dissections were performed for …

The field of human space travel is in the midst of a dramatic revolution. Upcoming missions are looking to push the boundaries of space travel, with plans to travel for longer distances and durations than ever before. Both the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) and several commercial space companies (e.g., Blue Origin, SpaceX, Virgin Galactic) have already started the process of preparing for long-distance, long-duration space exploration and currently plan to explore inner solar planets (e.g., Mars) by the 2030s. With the emergence of space tourism, space travel has materialized as a potential new, exciting frontier of business, hospitality, …

Fictional Escapism And Identity Formation: A Duoethnographic Exploration Of Stories And Adolescent Development, Cammie J. Lawton, Leia K. Cain

The Qualitative Report

Young Adult Literature has often been utilized to explore reader responses especially in attention to how fiction provides space to explore identity and one’s place within a larger societal context. In this duoethnography, we explored the importance of children and young adult literature’s influence on our own identity development. We share our primary findings that highlight the ways reading stories has provided escape, space for self-discovery and questioning, as well as pathways of learning to cultivate empathy and work towards social justice. We agree with Ellis’s (2014) argument that storytellers must share stories in a way that makes lessons or …

Investigation, Detection And Prevention Of Online Child Sexual Abuse Material: A Comprehensive Survey, Vuong Ngo, Christina Thorpe, Cach N. Dang, Susan Mckeever

Conference papers

Child sexual abuse inflicts lifelong devastating consequences for victims and is a growing social concern. In most countries, child sexual abuse material (CSAM) distribution is illegal. As a result, there are many research papers in the literature which proposed technologies to detect and investigate CSAM. In this survey, a comprehensive search of the peer reviewed journal and conference paper databases (including preprints) is conducted to identify high-quality literature. We use the PRISMA methodology to refine our search space to 2,761 papers published by Springer, Elsevier, IEEE and ACM. After iterative reviews of title, abstract and full text for relevance to …

Knowledge transfer among research disciplines can lead to substantial research progress. At first glance, astronaut health and rare diseases may be seen as having little common ground for such an exchange. However, deleterious health conditions linked to human space exploration may well be considered as a narrow sub-category of rare diseases. Here, we compare and contrast research and healthcare in the contexts of rare diseases and space health and identify common barriers and avenues of improvement. The prevalent genetic basis of most rare disorders contrasts sharply with the occupational considerations required to sustain human health in space. Nevertheless small sample …

Pandemic Experience And The Concept Of World, Paul Turner Dec 2022

Pandemic Experience And The Concept Of World, Paul Turner

Critical Humanities

This article begins with some common or well-known sentiments about the present pandemic era and our experience of it, and moves by way of these toward discussion of the concepts of human existence and the “world” in the broadest sense of both terms. Departing from but also radicalizing the notion that “everything changed” in this pandemic time, I discuss certain logical difficulties that pertain to conceiving of or coherently talking about strict totalities which would include our own selves. This will have significant consequences for our conception of the world (when taken in its absolute or broadest sense), and in …

From Protection To Prevention: The Case For Incorporating Anti-Sexual Harassment Provisions Into Nova Scotia’S Occupational Health And Safety Legislation, Sydney Hull

Dalhousie Journal of Legal Studies

This paper asks if the law in Nova Scotia adequately reflects the accepted notion that every employee has the right to a workplace free from sexual harassment. Nova Scotia trails most other Canadian jurisdictions in its exclusion of psychological violence and mental health hazards from occupational health and safety legislation. This paper begins by canvassing current legal remedies available to victims of workplace sexual harassment. Concluding that current human rights, tort, and contact frameworks do not sufficiently protect employees, it argues that Nova Scotia’s Occupational Health and Safety Act must be amended to include sexual harassment and other forms of …
