Social Support As A Moderator Between Maternal Mental Health And Child School Engagement Among Families Exposed To Adversity, Kari Nicole Thomsen Jan 2022

Social Support As A Moderator Between Maternal Mental Health And Child School Engagement Among Families Exposed To Adversity, Kari Nicole Thomsen

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

School engagement is a positive, malleable aspect of youth functioning. The present study examined the direct and interactive relations between social-ecological factors (i.e., maternal depression, maternal anxiety, youth social support) and youth school engagement among families exposed to adversity. Participants were 117 youths (Mage = 9.96, SD = 1.40; 51% female; 88.89% Black), and their female primary caregivers. Hierarchical linear regression modeling revealed a direct, positive relation between child social support and child school engagement. No direct relations were found between maternal anxiety or maternal depression and child school engagement. Social support moderated the relation between maternal anxiety and school …

Coaches' Attitudes Toward Transgender Athletes, Danielle Sample Jan 2022

Coaches' Attitudes Toward Transgender Athletes, Danielle Sample

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

Transgender athletes face discrimination based on negative societal attitudes in many life arenas; they particularly confront prejudice in the arena of sport. This study examined the attitudes of some of the most influential people in an athlete’s life, coaches. The study examined coach gender, conformity to masculinity norms (particularly hegemonic masculinity norms of power over women and heterosexual self-presentation), and level of physical contact in sport as related to negative attitudes toward transgender athletes. In light of the recent spate of anti-transgender legislation focusing on transwomen athletes, attitudes toward directionality of transition within transgender athletes were also investigated. Data were …

Exploring Moderation Effects Of Humor Styles On The Relationship Between Racial And Ethnic Microaggressions And Work Volition In Black Working Men, Daniel Lattimore Jan 2022

Exploring Moderation Effects Of Humor Styles On The Relationship Between Racial And Ethnic Microaggressions And Work Volition In Black Working Men, Daniel Lattimore

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

This study examined the relationship between racial and ethnic microaggressions and work volition and whether humor styles moderated that relationship. Participants were 216 employed Black men who completed measures of work volition (WVS-V), racial and ethnic microaggressions (REMS-45), and humor styles (HSQ-32). Data were analyzed using Hayes’ PROCESS macro for SPSS (Model 1, moderation) and supported the hypothesis that racial and ethnic microaggressions (REMS) frequency were directly related to work volition. Aggressive humor style moderated the racial microaggression – work volition relationship such that using an aggressive humor style at high levels of microaggressions was associated with lower work volition. …

In Search Of Our Mothers' Garden: A Womanist Witnessing Of Black Motherhood And Mental Health, Dorothy'e Gott Jan 2022

In Search Of Our Mothers' Garden: A Womanist Witnessing Of Black Motherhood And Mental Health, Dorothy'e Gott

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

It is reported that 7.5 million African Americans are diagnosed with mental illness, and up to 7.5 million more may be affected without formal diagnosis (Davis, 2005). Acknowledging a 2:1 gender ratio of depression, women may be over-represented in this population (Immerman & Mackey, 2003). African American women’s lower rates of utilization of mental health services, which has been suggested to be impacted by stigma surrounding mental health, serves as an additional barrier for the attainment of optimal mental health. Thompson-Sanders et al. (2004) suggested that Black women who believe that living with psychological pain is part of her role …

Black-Male Imagos And Counternarrative Resistance: An Africana Existentialist Framework For Black-Male Analysis, Corey Neill Reed Jan 2022

Black-Male Imagos And Counternarrative Resistance: An Africana Existentialist Framework For Black-Male Analysis, Corey Neill Reed

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

James Baldwin describes the Black male in the White gaze as a “fixed star,” meaning that there is only one way that Black males can be, and that way is deviant. However, we often do not examine what happens in Black-male psychology because of the social ascription of criminality, via tropes like the “Myth of the Black-Male Rapist” and “thug.” In this project, I investigate what this does to Black-male freedom and self-recognition. I make the argument that narratives influence one’s concept of self and that the political negotiation one must do in return impedes their freedom. To help solve …

How I Got On (Or Off) The Wagon: Self-Identified Factors Contributing To Drinking Changes In A Diverse Emerging Adult Sample, Youkyung Hwangbo Jan 2022

How I Got On (Or Off) The Wagon: Self-Identified Factors Contributing To Drinking Changes In A Diverse Emerging Adult Sample, Youkyung Hwangbo

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

Introduction: Binge drinking is a risk factor for the development of Alcohol Use Disorder (AUD), which can result in chronic and severe health and social problems throughout adulthood (Addolorato et al., 2018; Olsson et al., 2016). The majority of emerging adults who report binge drinking gradually decrease their drinking behavior without participating in an intervention. Research on “maturing out” or “natural recovery” suggests that social and role transition variables contribute to reductions, but relatively few studies have directly asked diverse community-residing young adults about factors that influence both increases and decreases in their drinking patterns. This exploratory and descriptive research …

Individual Differences In The Comprehension And Categorization Of Sarcasm, Megan Boatman Jan 2022

Individual Differences In The Comprehension And Categorization Of Sarcasm, Megan Boatman

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

The present study investigated whether exposure to sarcasm can predict a person’s categorization of sarcasm. Participants (N = 44) were asked to complete a picture matching task. In this task, they would listen to a sentence and look at two images. Sentences had pause durations along a six-point continuum scale. One image was a sarcastic interpretation of the sentence, and one was a literal interpretation. They were asked to choose the image they felt best fit the sentence they heard. Afterwards they were asked to fill out a sarcasm self-report scale. It was predicted that stimuli would follow a linear …

The Role Of Oxytocin Receptor Activation In The Nucleus Accumbens On Dopamine Release, Patricia Nalan

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

The neuropeptide oxytocin alters the salience of rewards and is being investigated as a treatment for substance use disorder; however, the effects of oxytocin on reward-related neural circuits are not understood. The detection of rewarding stimuli is regulated in part by the mesolimbic dopamine system, with dopaminergic cell bodies in the ventral tegmental area (VTA) that project to the nucleus accumbens (NAc). The current study aimed to determine the effect of oxytocin receptor activation in the NAc on mesolimbic dopamine release. Fixed potential amperometry was used to measure stimulation-evoked dopamine release in the NAc of anesthetized C57BL/6J mice before and …

Counseling At The Intersections: Comparing Trainee Multicultural Competency, Laura J. Condon Jan 2022

Counseling At The Intersections: Comparing Trainee Multicultural Competency, Laura J. Condon

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

This study addressed facets of counselor trainee cultural competency (e.g., perceived attractiveness, assessments of clinical severity and treatment planning, self-efficacy) when working with Black bisexual clients as compared to White bisexual or Black or White heterosexual clients. Due to a paucity of literature addressing Black bisexual clients (Ghabrial & Ross, 2018; Muñoz-Laboy, 2019), complexity of client needs due to balancing intersecting identities (Mays et. al, 2002), and the discrimination clients with multiple diverse identities encounter (Castro & Carnassale, 2019), it is important to assess counselor trainees’ multicultural counseling competence with Black bisexual clients to increase the likelihood they receive competent …

Olfactory Communication Among Conspecifics And Alteration Of Habitat And Social Preference Due To Food Deprivation And The Threat Of Predation In Meadow Voles, Sarah Stacey Garris Jan 2022

Olfactory Communication Among Conspecifics And Alteration Of Habitat And Social Preference Due To Food Deprivation And The Threat Of Predation In Meadow Voles, Sarah Stacey Garris

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

Animals must be able to collect and utilize information from their environment, such as olfactory cues, to make decisions that impact their fitness. Meadow voles make excellent experimental subjects for studying the functional aspects of olfactory communication. While several body sources of meadow voles were previously observed to communicate the vole’s sex, I aimed to determine whether each source also communicates information distinct from other sources. This was accomplished by utilizing a habituation-test method. I found that scent marks from three body sources of a female meadow vole communicated information that was both redundant and distinct from one another. In …

An Assemblage Of Becomings: Affective Connections Between Spiritual Experience And Objects, Clarie Jo Koehn Jan 2022

An Assemblage Of Becomings: Affective Connections Between Spiritual Experience And Objects, Clarie Jo Koehn

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

This study follows the affects that flow between spiritual experience, humans, and objects and conjure transformations of subjectivity. Informed by affect theory and Deleuze and Guattari’s concept of becoming, I used postqualitative methods to interview six women and femmes about their spiritual experiences, the objects associated with their experiences, and the shifts in selfhood that their experience-object assemblages produced. Transcription and analysis was led by affect, involving attunement to hot spots that served as jumping off points for writing stories connecting participant to participant and participant to researcher. Analyses revealed the presence of affect in relation to objects that serve …

Social Recognition Memory In Meadow Voles, Microtus Pennsylvanicus, Depends On Sex And Familiarity, Kelsey Elizabeth Clark Jan 2022

Social Recognition Memory In Meadow Voles, Microtus Pennsylvanicus, Depends On Sex And Familiarity, Kelsey Elizabeth Clark

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

Proper social interactions between animals require that an individual discriminate, recognize, and remember the unique cues from conspecifics. Many aspects of social behavior, such as individual recognition, mate recognition and parent-offspring recognition, may be based on such capabilities. To test social recognition over time, subjects are often repeatedly presented with scent from an individual or have prolonged associations with those individuals and then, later, they are simultaneously exposed to familiar and novel individuals or their scents. If the subject can discriminate between the two and recognize the familiar individual’s characteristics, they should investigate the novel stimulus significantly more than the …

Factors Impacting Advanced Math Course-Taking: A Multilevel Modeling Analysis Of The Hsls:09, Shelby Gayle Roberts Jan 2022

Factors Impacting Advanced Math Course-Taking: A Multilevel Modeling Analysis Of The Hsls:09, Shelby Gayle Roberts

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

The United States continues to lag other first-world countries in the number of students prepared to enter the STEM workforce. Research has shown that taking advanced math courses during high school better prepares students to enter college STEM programs (Byun et al., 2015; Chen, 2016). Both student and school characteristics often shape which courses students take in secondary school. Previous academic achievement and performance along with motivational factors, like expectations, math identity and self-efficacy, and students’ valuation of mathematics work concomitantly to shape students’ math course enrollments in high school (Attewell & Domina, 2008; Burkman & Lee, 2003; Maltese & …

T Cell Changes Induced By Dietary/Weight Change, Aljowhara Aljeraiwi Jan 2022

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

Obesity is a condition that affects many people and is associated with numerous health issues and chronic diseases, including viral infections. For example, during the SARS-CoV2 epidemic, obesity emerged as a major risk for severe COVID 19. Obesity has been shown to increase T cell exhaustion resulting in loss of CD8+ T cell functions and reducing the immune system's capacity to fight infectious diseases. Exhausted T cells can be identified by the increased expression of the membrane protein Programmed Cell Death 1 (PD-1). While many studies demonstrate that a high-fat diet and an increase in weight can affect the immune …

This design case provides a transparent tale of building an international graduate teaching assistant (IGTA) orientation as a virtual Community of Practice (VCoP) during the COVID-19 era. The design case is situated in an English as a Second Language Composition (ESLC) Program at a large midwestern university for new GTAs, both international and domestic. Studies show that IGTAs who do not fit the prototype of GTAs in predominately white institutions (PWI), face marginalization, damaging their sense of belonging and identity as legitimate educators. Their salient social identities as both multicultural and multilingual become oppressed as they attempt to develop their …

Sourcing Through The Grapevine: Comprehending Multiple Perspectives In Texts Reflecting Gossip, Erica D. Kessler Jan 2022

Sourcing Through The Grapevine: Comprehending Multiple Perspectives In Texts Reflecting Gossip, Erica D. Kessler

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

The current work sought to examine how the degree of consistency in texts enhances memory for sources within the context of gossip, a new approach that has not been attempted empirically. Theoretically motivated by models and frameworks that characterize source processing and representation, multiple aspects of source memory were assessed, including memory for connections between the sources and their respective gossip statements, but also memory for pairs that spoke about the same topic. Additionally, the present studies investigated various relationships between individual differences such as attitudes towards gossip, tendency to engage in gossip situations, and interpersonal curiosity and text comprehension. …

A New Look At Student Engagement Theory: Describing The Role Social Media Plays In Student Engagement, Mary Katherine Tyler Jan 2022

A New Look At Student Engagement Theory: Describing The Role Social Media Plays In Student Engagement, Mary Katherine Tyler

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

The problem that this research will address is that the current generation of college students, Gen Z, are using social media and digital technology to connect with their peers, create community and engage with their university like no generation before them. In addition to this, student affairs professionals fall largely into the Millennial Generation or Gen X, who did not grow up as digital natives (Prensky, 2001) and thus have a very different relationship with social media. The purpose of this qualitative multiple descriptive case study research design, using the framework designed by Yin (2014), is to describe student engagement …

The Dark Side Of It: Three Essays On Issues Related To The Consequences Of It, Stephanie Ann Totty Jan 2022

The Dark Side Of It: Three Essays On Issues Related To The Consequences Of It, Stephanie Ann Totty

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

Information technology (IT) is a double-edged sword—IT can afford individuals and organizations opportunities to improve performance; meanwhile, IT may cause unexpected consequences. This three-essay dissertation examines two important dark sides of IT, information security and driving safety, and evaluates interventions that may combat them. The first essay reviews and synthesizes literature on information security in the information systems (IS) field. Based on a semi-automated topic modeling approach, this essay systematically describes major themes of information security research in the IS field, identifies their interconnections, and offers guidelines for future research. Guided by the first essay's insights, the second essay focuses …

Rising From The Ashes: Sowing A New Generation Of Post-Pandemic Violin Students, Nancy Denise Ditto Jan 2022

Rising From The Ashes: Sowing A New Generation Of Post-Pandemic Violin Students, Nancy Denise Ditto

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

During the global pandemic, remote violin lessons became much more widely available. Online learning was widely viewed as suboptimal at that time, but many parents preferred the online platform to in-person learning because they felt their children were safer at home. Teaching violin virtually can be challenging for teachers because they cannot provide essential hands-on instruction. There are difficulties like tuning the instrument, assessing tone quality, etc., and the inability of students to play in ensembles may handicap their motivation to practice. Some aspects of online teaching may be advantageous, such as teachers being able to reach almost all students …

The Effects Of Resistance Training On Running Economy And Plantarflexor Function In Middle-Age Runners, Zoey C. Kearns Jan 2022

The Effects Of Resistance Training On Running Economy And Plantarflexor Function In Middle-Age Runners, Zoey C. Kearns

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

Endurance running exposure alone may not be sufficient to slow the age-related decline in plantarflexor function that is also thought to contribute to declines in running economy. Thus, it is important to identify interventions beyond running alone, plantarflexor-focused resistance training, that could help maintain plantarflexor function and “youthful” metabolic costs in aging runners. PURPOSE: To assess the influence of three types of resistance training interventions on running economy (RE), plantarflexor function, and Achilles tendon (AT) stiffness in middle-aged runners. METHODS: Twenty-six middle-aged runners (51±5 yrs) participated in one of three different 10-week resistance training interventions: 1) heavy resistance training, 2) …

Role Of Sex In Rate Of Infant Vocalization And Canonical Babbling, Janine Peca Jan 2022

Role Of Sex In Rate Of Infant Vocalization And Canonical Babbling, Janine Peca

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

A female language advantage has been widely reported, although it has not been consistently shown across the literature. Perhaps surprisingly, the possibility of sex differences in prelinguistic vocalizations in the first year has not been widely studied. A paper published in Current Biology in 2020 found that infant males produced a significantly larger number of speech-like vocalizations through 12 months of age than infant females based on human coding of randomly-selected samples from all-day recordings. The authors argued that their sampling method offered a maximally representative view of infant vocalization. The present study also investigated possible sex differences in the …

Investigating Youth Coaching Climates And Techniques: Perceptions Of Personal And Emotional Growth From Athletes With And Without Dylsexia, Marko Branislav Pavlovic

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

Current literature demonstrates that coaches must assist athletes beyond motor-development to ensure their psychological well-being and promote personal/social growth. This analysis entailed two studies, and both utilized a mixed methods approach to explore youth coaching climates and techniques and perceptions of personal and emotional growth from athletes with and without dyslexia. Study one explored general student-athlete population of four youth soccer teams (two male teams, two female teams) and the relationships between the coaching climate and their social and emotional outcomes in the sport. Results showed that sporting experiences and motivational climate created by the coaches can have tremendous impact …

Allé Guru: Hip-Hop Uplift, Jared Lee Pillow Jan 2022

Allé Guru: Hip-Hop Uplift, Jared Lee Pillow

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

Abstract: As a solo hip-hop rapper and a member of Gang Starr during the 1990s, Guru (born Keith Edward Elam) represented a unique uplift voice in a burgeoning New York hip-hop scene. Demonstrating an understanding of ongoing African American freedom struggles, Guru poetically rhymed and flowed knowledge of systematic oppression and historical strategies against it, particularly in relation to the late twentieth-century African American community. In examining his poetic lyrics, Guru stands as more than a rapper, but also as a late twentieth-century poet voicing real issues and solutions. As a result, Guru is worthy of serious consideration in not …

Imagining Identity Beyond The Fishbowl: A Framework For Using Ethnographic Texts For Children To Cultivate A Place Of Inclusion And Belonging, Jacklyn Boggs

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

Bibliotherapy—the use of the literary arts for the purpose of healing—has been used by numerous professionals for a variety of reasons. Psychologists, social workers, educators, and health care professionals have specifically utilized works in the children’s genre as a tool for promoting dialogue with children around difficult topics, such as loss, trauma, oppression, self-abhorrence, and suffering. Children’s books can serve as vehicles for facilitating conversations and safe spaces of inclusion that invite them to explore the complexity of their identities and lives. Of course, not all texts are created equal, and thus this project aims to serve as a framework …

Exploring The Role Of Religious Beliefs And Practices On Family Language Policy, Saad Alamri Jan 2022

Exploring The Role Of Religious Beliefs And Practices On Family Language Policy, Saad Alamri

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

Earlier Family Language Policy (FLP) research has focused on ethnic identities, mobility, and transnationality, as well as, to a lesser extent, gender and familial kinship; few studies have focused primarily on religion as a factor in FLP processes. Religion is particularly important in the FLP of Muslim families who speak Arabic as a first or additional language, as many of the daily Islamic practices necessitate the use of Arabic. Therefore, this dissertation sets out to investigate the impact of religious beliefs and practices on the FLP of non-Arab Muslim families. I particularly focused on Pakistani expatriate/immigrant families raising their children …
