Psychology Faculty Research and Publications

Affectionate communication may play a key role in how military couples navigate the transition from deployment to reintegration. Informed by relational turbulence theory, this study considered how the trajectory of relational turbulence experienced by military couples over time predicted their verbal and nonverbal expressions of affection. Online self-report data were gathered from 268 U.S. military couples across eight months beginning at homecoming. Relational turbulence increased over time and affectionate communication decreased over time. Also as predicted, the trajectory of increasing relational turbulence corresponded with greater declines in verbal and nonverbal expressions of affection. These results advance relational turbulence theory, illuminate …

Interpersonal Violence And Mental Health Outcomes: Mediation By Self-Efficacy And Coping, Eunice Magalhaes, John H. Grych, Celia Ferreira, Carla Antunes, Ana Prioste, Ines Jongenelen

Psychology Faculty Research and Publications

There is a compelling need to explore the mechanisms linking violence to mental health. This study tested the mediating role of self-efficacy and coping in the association between victimization and mental health. Data were obtained from 422 adults (aged 18-77; M = 30.05; SD = 10.93). Self-efficacy and maladaptive coping strategies mediated the association between physical victimization and anxiety, and the association between psychological victimization and satisfaction with life anxiety and depression. Self-efficacy and adaptive coping also mediated the association between psychological victimization and satisfaction with life. This study provides important implications for research and practice.

Unwavering Support And Relentless Fear: A Narrative Inquiry Into How Mothers Of Adult Children Who Are Registered As Sex Offenders In Florida Experience The Sex Offender Registry, Rules, And Laws, Shelley Kavanagh

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2020 - Present

Sex Offender Registry and Notification (SORN) and Sex Offender Residency Restrictions (SORR) laws and policies were developed and implemented with the intention of keeping communities and children safe, however many studies illustrate that these policies are in fact resulting in negative consequences for registrants and their families. All the existing studies focused on both registrants and family members, in most cases, spouses. A gap in the literature about the possible impacts on mothers of adult registrants was identified. Further, there was a lack of qualitative research, which, in highlighting the lived experiences and stories of mothers, is powerful and can …

Two Essays On Peer Effects And Diversity Within The Boardroom, Jason Damm Jan 2022

Two Essays On Peer Effects And Diversity Within The Boardroom, Jason Damm

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2020 - Present

In this manuscript, I present two essays which examine the role of diversity within the corporate boardroom. The first essay determines that board compensation practices at competing firms influence the remuneration arrangements of directors. Consistent with the observational learning perspective, directors mimic the behavior of peer firms in setting their own compensation, but that diversity, in the form of gender, race/ethnicity, education, and experience moderates this relationship. Diversity also leads to better board performance measured through its impact on excess CEO compensation and CEO turnover sensitivity. In the second essay, I document the presence of peer influence in diversity hires. …

The research examined the first administration scores and the last administration scores of the CCCAPS to determine the level of clinical improvement. The researcher used the revised Specific Affect Coding System (SPAFF) to code the therapist and client interactions throughout the entire first psychotherapy session. The …

Examing The Effect Of Race On Wrongful Conviction Compensation, Emily R. Albrecht Jan 2022

Examing The Effect Of Race On Wrongful Conviction Compensation, Emily R. Albrecht

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2020 - Present

Wrongful convictions have occurred throughout the United States’, but it was not until the creation of the Innocence Project in 1992 that these cases were re-examined. Like other facets of the criminal justice system, racial disparities are present in exoneration research. Studies have found the rate of exoneration is slower for African Americans compared to other races and represent a disproportionate number of rape exonerations relative to their share of the population. Actual compensation is rarely included in analysis, because total compensation awarded has been a black box till now. This is the first study addressing these gaps, by calculating …

Examining The Correlation Of Self-Compassion And Compassion Fatigue In Social Work Interns, Tuttle Bridget Schneiderman

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2020 - Present

Social workers are exposed to trauma and suffering through experiences that are retold to them through their clients. This secondary exposure to suffering can have a negative impact on the practitioner resulting in compassion fatigue. The purpose of this study was to examine whether self-compassion is significantly correlated with lower levels of compassion fatigue among social work interns. The researcher examined levels of self-compassion and compassion fatigue amongst undergraduate, generalist, and clinical specialist graduate social work interns. Next, demographic characteristics (age, number of hours employed, gender, race, and religion) associated with self-compassion and compassion fatigue in social interns were identified. …

Family Caregiving During Transitional Care: An Ethnographic Exploration Of Thai-Isan Family Caregivers Providing Care For Surviving Stroke Older Adults, Supavadee Thiengtham

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2020 - Present

Providing family caregiving during transitional care of a stroke patient is the most challenging for family caregivers. This is because of the shift in the care environment from a hospital with an organizational culture to a home with a traditional culture. Yet, cultural influences on family caregiving during transitional care are not well studied. This ethnographic study aims to describe the family caregiving of older Thai-Isan stroke survivors through the transition from hospital to home. This study employs Lininger's culture care theory (CCT) as the theoretical framework and utilizes the ethnonursing method to discover cultural knowledge. Data was collected through …

Leadership Challenges Women Face In New York City Local Government, Carlos Manzano Jan 2022

Leadership Challenges Women Face In New York City Local Government, Carlos Manzano

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2020 - Present

This dissertation examines some of the challenges women face in the public sector in New York City. Workplace communal and agentic attributes and transactional and transformational leadership provided the theoretical frameworks through which women are viewed when they ascend to executive or managerial positions in city agencies. Communal and agentic attributes delve into feminine and masculine roles, the leadership challenge and biases toward women, and the preference in leadership style for women and men. Scholars organize these attributes to help us understand gender stereotypes whereby men are described as independent, assertive, and initiating, while women are described as caring, emotionally …

Predicting The Formation Of Mutual Antipathies In Primary And Middle School Classrooms, Michael Yoho Jan 2022

Predicting The Formation Of Mutual Antipathies In Primary And Middle School Classrooms, Michael Yoho

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2020 - Present

Enemy relationships play an important role in shaping identity, adjustment, and group cohesion. However, little is known about the causes of enemy relationships. The current study identified the role of individual and dyadic attributes in the formation of new mutual antipathies in primary and middle school children (N=372). Participants completed identical surveys at three time points during a single school year. Self-reports described children’s conduct problems and emotional problems. Peer nominations measured children’s popularity, academic achievement, athleticism, and acceptance. The results indicated that enemy formation was driven by undesirable traits at both the individual and dyadic levels. At the individual …

Rape And Reverence: Culling The Lessons From 20th Century Ethics, Gabriella Piconi Jan 2022

Rape And Reverence: Culling The Lessons From 20th Century Ethics, Gabriella Piconi

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2020 - Present

This thesis aims to contribute to contemporary feminist theory through the integration of several interdisciplinary texts from the last century, all of which challenge an existing, male-oriented norm of woman as ‘lesser’ in a particular field of study. The historical position of woman as ‘other’ in a negative light is a postulate that contemporary feminist studies may take too much for granted. The supposed lack of prominence of women in scripture, such as what Phyllis Trible gestures to, for example, is not erasure at all, but women present as archetypes, a mode of representation later dispersed in literature and film. …

Social Ghosts Of The Domestic Sphere: The Haunting Presence Of The Monstrous Mother In Contemporary Fiction, Alicia Dvorak Jan 2022

Social Ghosts Of The Domestic Sphere: The Haunting Presence Of The Monstrous Mother In Contemporary Fiction, Alicia Dvorak

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2020 - Present

This thesis argues that the numerous widespread fears about deviant domestic behavior that rose to prominence in Western nations during the post-World War II era can still be observed in contemporary fictional representations of what I term the “monstrous domestic”: when mothers and the domestic spaces that they occupy are depicted as “bad,” “evil,” or otherwise threatening. Using psychoanalytic, feminist, and monster theory, as well as sociocultural context, I examine four works that prominently display and condemn the monstrous domestic: Shirley Jackson’s The Haunting of Hill House (1959), Neil Gaiman’s Coraline (2002), Jennifer Kent’s The Babadook (2014), and Gillian Flynn’s …

Temperament And Electrocortical Development: Examination Of Infant Alpha Eeg Coherence, Samantha C. Gott

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2020 - Present

Temperament and its development have been associated with the alpha band of EEG coherence in previous research that focused on adolescent and adult populations, results suggest that this measure stands as a reliable indicator of emotional states. In the current study, five data sets from previously conducted studies were analyzed to determine if resting state alpha coherence measures differ in various brain regions and are associated with variation in levels of temperament. Additionally, we aimed to determine if, as age increases, a synchronous result in coherence may be seen (specifically, from posterior to anterior), in accordance with neurophysiological development. Regression …

The Effect Of Focused Breathing On Response Inhibition And Perception Of Affective Words: A Behavioral And An Eeg Study, Emily Ahne Jan 2022

The Effect Of Focused Breathing On Response Inhibition And Perception Of Affective Words: A Behavioral And An Eeg Study, Emily Ahne

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2020 - Present

When practiced over long periods of time (>16 weeks), mindfulness positively impacts inhibitory processing, in that as mindfulness exposure and experience increases, inhibitory processing is enhanced. Similarly, long-term mindfulness practice diminishes the impact of emotionally-valanced scenes. However recently, more work is underway on how brief mindfulness inductions impact these same outcomes. Across two online pilot studies (behavioral outcomes only) and one in-person experiment (behavioral and neuronal outcomes), how a brief focused-breathing induction impacts response inhibition and the perception of affective words was explored. Findings demonstrate that a 30-minute mindfulness induction produced a diminished Simon Effect, as well as faster …

The Role Of Relationship Alternatives In Susceptibility To Friend Inlufence, Sharon Faur

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2020 - Present

In the social world of adolescents, friends play an integral role in shaping adjustment. Little is known about what differentiates those who influence from those who are influenced. The current study examined the role of relationship alternatives to determine whether a relative lack of friends increases susceptibility to influence over adjustment outcomes in a sample of adolescents (N=794). Findings suggest that partners with relatively fewer friends were susceptible to influence from partners with relatively more friends over social anxiety and prosocial behavior. Both partners influenced each other’s academic engagement over time. Multiple group analyses indicated that patterns of susceptibility to …

There Is Still Life After Death: Reflections On Overconsumption And Waste, Caroline Portella Ferreira Duarte

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2020 - Present

The unbridled consumerism established during the industrial revolution in consumer society has become a mass phenomenon. The birth of industry caused significant transformations in the world economy, as well as in the human lifestyle, as it accelerated the production of goods and the exploitation of natural resources. People today consume in a way that their purchasing choices define them. Consumption is not driven by social responsibility: individuals often end up engaging in overconsumption habits due to the vast number of options and the perpetual launching of new trends. Consumption is the satisfaction of desires and wants, especially in current westernized …
