The Relationship Between Kindergarten To Grade 8 Principals’ Epistemological Beliefs And School Success, Leland Stuart Sanford
The Relationship Between Kindergarten To Grade 8 Principals’ Epistemological Beliefs And School Success, Leland Stuart Sanford
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Although current research links teacher effectiveness and student success to epistemological beliefs, little is known about how those beliefs influence principal leadership and school success. The purpose of this study was to examine the extent to which epistemological beliefs of K-8 principals predict school success in a large U.S. metropolitan area (LMA). The theoretical framework was Perry’s theory of epistemological development and Schommer-Aikin’s theory of personal epistemology. In this quantitative correlational study, epistemological beliefs of K-8 principals were measured with the Schommer-Aikins Epistemological Belief Inventory and school success with School Quality Rating Policy (SQRP). Data were collected through a convenient …

Parental Involvement And Computer Literacy In Enhancing Student Virtual Learning, Veena Ruth Sangram
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Parental involvement in the education of their children has been a focus of researchers for the past several years, especially with more parents and students opting for virtual schooling. Researchers found that parental involvement in their children’s education predicted children’s overall grades and social health. However, the role of parental computer literacy in parental involvement among virtual learning students had not been established. The purpose of this quantitative study was to examine whether parental computer literacy moderates the relationship between parental involvement and student grades among students attending Cyber Charter Schools. The study was guided by Bronfenbrenner’s ecological systems theory. …

Primary Care Physicians’ Participation, Knowledge, And Views Of Nutrition Counseling For Weight Management, Carl Schlesser
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
AbstractAn estimated 70% of the United States population is considered overweight or obese, which has led to an epidemic. Primary care physicians (PCPs) are considered the first line of defense to help fight obesity through weight management by providing nutrition care to patients. With little known about how PCPs engage with their patients on nutrition care combined with changing guidelines on treating obese patients, there is a gap in research on how PCPs help patients with weight management and what tools PCPs use to accomplish this. Guided by the health promotion model, the purpose of this qualitative study was to …

Twice-Exceptional Childhood Experiences Contributing To Imposter Syndrome In Post-Secondary Faculty, Joy Gehringer Shytle
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
AbstractThis qualitative study involved exploring the relationship between imposter syndrome in post-secondary faculty and their twice exceptional (2e) childhood experiences. 2e is defined as students who are identified as academically gifted but also have a disability. Lack of accurate identification and accommodations for 2e students can lead to long-lasting mental health struggles, underperformance in academic environments, and low self-esteem. As 2e individuals become professionals, identity developed in grade school may contribute to feelings of imposter syndrome, causing significant performance and mental health struggles. Erikson’s psychosocial identity theory was used as a theoretical framework to understand how these experiences impact identity …

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Effective communication is vital to nursing practice, as it can ensure quality care delivery and promote positive patient and organizational outcomes. In most organizations, the exchange of information between nurses is done during the end of shift (EOS) reporting. The purpose of this DNP project was to determine if an educational intervention focused on effective communication in EOS reporting increased knowledge and confidence among nurses working in a home healthcare setting. Fifty-seven nurses were invited to participate in the educational intervention, and 49 nurses took part for an 85% response rate. The average age of the sample was 45.51 years …
Workplace Violence, Trauma, And The Lived Experience Of Corrections Officers: A Phenomenological Study, Amanda Smith
Workplace Violence, Trauma, And The Lived Experience Of Corrections Officers: A Phenomenological Study, Amanda Smith
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Corrections officers are required to ensure compliance from inmates, and sometimes they have to use force, resulting in violent encounters. Such incidents can be traumatic for those directly and indirectly involved. Previous studies examined the working conditions of jail staff, but their focus was not primarily directed toward corrections officers. The purpose of this qualitative phenomenological study was to explore how everyday occurrences of violence associated with working in jails influence corrections officers’ physiological well-being. The theory of constructed emotions framed this study. Recruiting was conducted using a demographic and interest survey distributed through Facebook. Using purposive sampling, semi structured …

Factors Influencing Burnout Rates Among Mental Health Professionals, Vanessa Ann Smith
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
AbstractThe responsibility of mental health providers to care for the sick and their families throughout the COVID-19 pandemic placed mental health providers at a considerably higher risk for burnout than the general population. Despite the increasing burnout rates among mental health providers during the pandemic, no scholars have yet examined how the COVID-19 pandemic affected burnout among mental health providers. Therefore, the purpose of this quantitative, correlational survey study was to examine the factors that contributed to burnout among psychologists during the COVID-19 pandemic in the United States. Maslach’s theory of burnout was used as the theoretical framework to explore …

Posttraumatic Growth Following Critical Incident Exposure For Urban Firefighters, Deirdre Smith
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Firefighters are often exposed to critical/traumatic incidents. Regular exposure to critical/traumatic incidents has the potential to cause negative psychological problems among this population, though there is also a likelihood that firefighters can experience a positive effect such as posttraumatic growth (PTG) as a result of critical incident exposure. The purpose of this qualitative phenomenological study was to explore the lived experiences of PTG for urban firefighters following exposure to work-related traumatic events. The phenomenon of PTG provided the conceptual framework for the study. Data were collected from semistructured telephone interviews with eight urban firefighters. Findings from coding and thematic analysis …

Anxiety, Depression, And Sexual Minority Identity Among First Responders, Kayla Soohy
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Research indicates that first responders tend to experience high levels of anxiety and depression due to unique stressors associated with first responder employment. This increased risk level for mental health issues among first responders can be exacerbated by the addition of psychosocial stressors. The influence of interpersonal or intrapersonal factors, such as sexual minority identity, on the mental health issues experienced by first responders has remained relatively unexplored. The purpose of this research study was to explore the relationship between type of first responder, sexual identity, anxiety, and depression via a framework rooted in minority stress theory. Data were gathered …

Exploring Discretionary Practices Of Civilian Police Officers During Traffic Stop While Working In A Military Community, Lisa Michelle Tartt
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
The individuals who reside in military communities must abide by the rules of both the military and the civilian communities. When an individual is stopped for a traffic violation in a military community, their driver’s license is requested but the military- affiliated personnel often present their military identification card also. Some may expect leniency due to their military affiliation while others do not. However, there are no studies covering police discretion in a military community during traffic stops. Using social stratification theory, the purpose of this study was to understand officers’ perspectives on discretion during traffic stops and how their …

Factors Influencing The Effectiveness Of Managing Human–Robot Teams, Theodore B. Terry
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Certain factors can influence the capabilities of a robot–human team by affecting their social and behavioral dynamics in a work environment. But these factors were not known due to the progressive nature of human–robot partnerships and a lack of peer-reviewed literature on the topic. This e-Delphi study aimed to identify and understand these unknown influential factors based on the participants’ insights. The overarching research question asked about the need to determine factors that might influence the effectiveness of managing human-robot teams. The basis for the conceptual framework for this study was the theory of communication used in organizational management. Twelve …
Differences On Employee Satisfaction And Intent To Leave Between Older And Younger Federal Leaders, Alex P. Thames
Differences On Employee Satisfaction And Intent To Leave Between Older And Younger Federal Leaders, Alex P. Thames
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
The retiring of an aging workforce leaves significant deficits in leadership positions across the federal government. As employee turnover increased, onboarding was not occurring at rates necessary to replace retirees, ultimately contributing to the leader deficit. The evidence was insufficient on how the employee satisfaction of both older and younger leaders affects their intent to leave and ultimately the leader deficit. The purpose of this quantitative study was to examine the differences in employee satisfaction and the intent to leave between older (i.e., age >= 40) and younger (i.e., age < 40) federal leaders to discern how their age influences their satisfaction and desire to leave federal service. Grounded in Herzberg’s two-factor theory and Strauss and Howe’s generation theory, the research questions addressed if the independent variable, categorized age of supervisory employees, had an effect on the dependent variables, employee satisfaction and intent to leave. Archival data from the 2016 Federal Employee Viewpoint Survey were analyzed. The results of the Welch t-test and Fisher’s exact test (r x 2) found no significant statistical differences (p > .05) between the categorized age group of supervisory employees and …

An Educational Program For Nurses To Incorporate Spiritual Care Into Clinical Practice, Alicia J. Thomas
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Spiritual well-being is associated with several positive outcomes, including a greater tolerance of the emotional and physical demands of illness. Spiritual care is a basic element of holistic nursing, yet nurses generally lack spiritual care knowledge and abilities and are often unable to satisfy patients’ spiritual care needs. Therefore, nurses are in urgent need of relevant training to enhance their abilities to provide patients with spiritual care. Evidence-based education was lacking at the project site, a privately owned long-term care facility. Primary care attention was focused on the patients’ physical care; however, insufficient attention was being paid to spiritual care, …
