The Effects Of Segmenting Worksheets And Behavior Specific Praise On Independent Seatwork With Elementary Students, Lauren Peak Nov 2022

The Effects Of Segmenting Worksheets And Behavior Specific Praise On Independent Seatwork With Elementary Students, Lauren Peak

Dissertations

While the education system has seen many changes over the years due to COVID-19, one constant is that students must complete independent seatwork at certain times throughout the day. As teachers accommodate the many students in their classroom, an intervention that could increase students’ amount of academic production when doing independent seatwork would be mutually beneficial. For students, the increased contact with learning opportunities would provide the students means to increase fluency for that skill. Examining the effects of segmented and whole worksheets on production would, therefore, create additional learning opportunities.

This study sought to assess the effectiveness of the …

In Search Of Time To Bring The Message On Social Media: Effects Of Temporal Targeting And Weather On Digital Consumers, Gunwoo Yoon, Cong Li, John Juyoung Choi

Marketers always incline to deliver advertising messages to the right consumer at the right time. Yet, the question of when exactly should such a persuasive message be sent to a consumer remains elusive in the existing literature. The current study aims to address this research question within the theoretical framework of contextual marketing. The authors argue that contextual information such as time and weather can be used to design more effective mobile advertising campaigns on social media. The results of a field experiment in cooperation with a local restaurant suggest that ads delivered at consumers’ pre-decision stage (i.e., non-meal time) …

A Modeling Approach For Measuring The Performance Of A Human-Ai Collaborative Process, G Sankaran, Ma Palomino, M Knahl, G Siestrup

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics

Despite the unabated growth of algorithmic decision-making in organizations, there is a growing consensus that numerous situations will continue to require humans in the loop. However, the blending of a formal machine and bounded human rationality also amplifies the risk of what is known as local rationality. Therefore, it is crucial, especially in a data-abundant environment that characterizes algorithmic decision-making, to devise means to assess performance holistically. In this paper, we propose a simulation-based model to address the current lack of research on quantifying algorithmic interventions in a broader organizational context. Our approach allows the combining of causal modeling and …

Uas And Psychological Influence, Nazish Chunara Nov 2022

Uas And Psychological Influence, Nazish Chunara

Student Research Symposium (SRS)

This research will explore the multiple dimensions of unmanned aerial systems (UAS) and their impact on civilians living in conflict zones. Current data gathered on the impact of UAS addresses their physical nature but not the psychological power they wield. UAS have been argued as one of the most humane weapons of warfare, but the same literature does not acknowledge their inherent asymmetry. Notably, ‘drone’ refers to both weaponized and unweaponized unmanned aerial vehicles whose tasks range from targeted killings to delivering medical supplies to taking photographs. The inability of civilians to distinguish between military and humanitarian drones suggests a …

Colonizing Mars: Will Hydroponic Tower Gardens Suffice?, Marianna Pezzella, Mikayla Dutkiewicz Nov 2022

Colonizing Mars: Will Hydroponic Tower Gardens Suffice?, Marianna Pezzella, Mikayla Dutkiewicz

Student Research Symposium (SRS)

As “NASA aims to launch astronauts to Mars by the late 2030s or early 2040s,” astronauts are in need of a system to provide food regularly on extended space missions (Howell, 2022). The current use of packaged food will only last for so long, and the nutrients in the packaged food will continuously be lost over time. Hydroponic tower gardens could be the solution to this problem. Hydroponic tower gardens constructed on Mars in a temperature-and-atmosphere-regulated structure may be able to produce the sustainable harvest astronauts need for long-duration missions. Therefore, Project HART’s research program aims to determine the most …

The purpose of this paper is three-folded. First, it describes the significance of pilots’ mental health and its impact on aviation safety. Second, it explores the state of pilots’ current mental health and the causes and side-effects of mental health-related …

Provision of a steroid within 30 minutes and 60 minutes of arrival increased by 21 and 22 percentage points respectively, IV magnesium sulfate administration increased by 30 percentage points, the proportion hospitalized …

Developing Strategy Knowledge For Vocabulary Learning In Speaking English As Second Language, Inst. Dr. Ayad Enad Khalaf

Midad AL-Adab Refereed Quarterly Journal

Learners of English as a second language would like to learn all the language and master its four skills. Many learners may not know from where to start. Many learners may ask such questions; what should I do to learn English? How can I start? If ESL teachers followed effective strategies for teaching vocabulary, they could facilitate students’ proficiency in the four skills of English. Strategies of learning are many and various, but the more important is to raise the awareness of learners about these strategies. Developing of the metacognition of learners about strategies can lead to effective independent learning. …

‘I Know You May Have Heard This Story But …’: A Study Of Tense Shift As A Resource For Identity Construction, Dr. Shatha N. Qaiwer

Midad AL-Adab Refereed Quarterly Journal

This study focuses on tense variation as linguistic features of narrative performance using Schiffrin’s (1981) theory of tense variation supported by Labov’s (1972) and Ochs and Cap’s (2001) frameworks of narrative structure. It shows that historical present also performs evaluative function and appears in restricted clauses in progressive aspect indicating the overlap on time between two actions. Shifts into narrative past tense also perform an evaluative function and appears in contexts narrating unexpected event within the complication. Generic and nominalising actions are used to express negative evaluation of an opponent based on an earlier premise. These findings can bring new …
