Cenchrus Setiger - Environmental Weed Risk Assessment 2022, Department Of Primary Industries And Regional Development, Western Australia

Environmental Weed Risk Assessments

Introducing new plants to an area may have both positive and negative effects on the environment, economy and community. To minimise the negative environmental impact of introducing new agricultural species, DPIRD conducts a risk assessment procedure based on widely accepted scientific standards. This report assesses Birdwood grass (Cenchrus setiger). Birdwood grass (Cenchrus setiger) is native to north Africa, India and Middle east. It arrived in Western Australia (WA) when seed was sent from India in the 1920s by Field Marshal Lord Birdwood to his son-in-law, a grazier, in northern WA (Petheram and Kok 1991). It is a tufted, perennial bunch …

“Abolition As Presence”: An East Bay Ca Case Study Of Black Food Geographies, Ayize James Jan 2022

“Abolition As Presence”: An East Bay Ca Case Study Of Black Food Geographies, Ayize James

Environmental Studies Honors Projects

Using abolitionist methodologies, the author argues that food activism contests “food deserts” by making food present in sources alternative to supermarkets. The project can be broken into two central inquiries: (1) How do race and class formations in the East Bay generate landscapes of food inaccess that are labeled “food deserts”? and (2) How does food activism in the East Bay generate lasting alternatives to supermarkets?, which is explored through three case studies of food justice organizing in the East Bay.

Conference Papers

Older adults (≥65 years) are the fastest growing population group. Thus, ensuring nutritional well-being of the ‘over-65s’ to optimise health is critically important. Older adults represent a diverse population – some are fit and healthy, others are frail and many live with chronic conditions. Up to 78% of older Irish adults living independently are overweight or obese. The present paper describes how these issues were accommodated into the development of food-based dietary guidelines for older adults living independently in Ireland. Food-based dietary guidelines previously established for the general adult population served as the basis for developing more specific recommendations appropriate …

A Transition From Tradition: Employing Ta3 And Traditional Age & Sex Estimation Methods To Study Paleodemography In Umm An-Nar Arabia, Alyssa Bolster, Hannah Jeanlouis, Lesley A. Gregoricka, Jaime M. Ullinger

Year 2: AABA 2022 – Denver, CO

Background: Transition Analysis 3 (TA3) has enormous potential for the study of commingled skeletal material. Previous demographic analyses on commingled remains from Umm an-Nar (2700-2000 BCE) tombs Unar 1 and Unar 2 at the site of Shimal (Ras al-Khaimah, UAE) placed the majority of individuals in a generalized “adult” category using dental eruption. We hypothesized that we would identify more older adults (50+) in both tombs using TA3, and that more would be found in Unar 2, prior to the intensification of agriculture and regional aridification.

Methods: Commingled and fragmentary skeletal fragments (pubic symphyses (n=51), humeri (n=85), femora (n=194)) were …

Greenhouse Gas Emissions And Animal Protein For Human Consumption., Homero Salinas Jan 2022

Greenhouse Gas Emissions And Animal Protein For Human Consumption., Homero Salinas

Title III Professional Development Reports

Livestock is a key to nutrition and food security. Livestock is key to livelihoods, and it is calculated that there are 400 million poor animal keepers.

There are two indicators of gas emissions. One is the GDP in $US per ton of CO2e, and the other is the gobs created per ton of CO2e. For this presentation, the comparison of interest is agriculture vs. other productive activities. So, at the broad word level, around 300% more GDP is produced from other goods than from agricultural goods per ton of CO2e. Even in high-income countries, there is 700% more GDP/CO2e than …

End Stage Recurrent Glioblastoma Treated With A New Noninvasive Non-Contact Oncomagnetic Device, Devam Purohit

VCU's Medical Journal Club: The Work of Future Health Professionals

This presentation focused on the use of a noninvasive oncomagnetic device for glioblastoma. This treatment is special because it is noninvasive and doesn't pose the side effects of chemotherapy or surgery. The study looked at how the oncomagnetic device affected the size of the tumor after it reappeared in the patient's brain after being surgically removed initially. The device was tested on one patient and it was able to reduce his tumor by 31%.

21% of U.S adults experienced mental illnesses in 2020. Nearly 1 in 4 active- duty military personnel showed signs of mental health conditions in 2014 [89]. Mental health can be identified in the body by different biomarkers. These biomarkers potentially could be controlled by riboswitches, which could help mental illnesses and regulate diseases. Riboswitches are desirable in these cases due to responding without affecting vital functions. Riboswitches are located in mRNA and switch “ON” or “OFF” depending on the concentration of a biomarker [13]. In this research, riboswitches were re-engineered to take a known riboswitch and control its response in …

Reducing The Use Of Physical Restraints Of The Elderly In The Acute Care Setting, Rachael Malone Jan 2022

Reducing The Use Of Physical Restraints Of The Elderly In The Acute Care Setting, Rachael Malone

Master of Science in Nursing Theses and Projects

The aim of this MSN project is to identify and improve the gaps in education regarding physical restraint use in the acute care setting on the elderly patient population. When admitted into hospitals, elderly patients are at much greater risk for being placed in physical restraints due to little education regarding alternative measures to physical restraints and inappropriate assessments. The purpose of this project is to implement education about the detrimental factors and consequences patients may suffer once placed in physical restraints and improve the use of alternative measures to physical restraints. This project will be evaluated by acute care …

A Day In The Life Of A Hospital Bedside Nurse: A Different Look At Nurse Stressors, Angela R. Higdon Jan 2022

A Day In The Life Of A Hospital Bedside Nurse: A Different Look At Nurse Stressors, Angela R. Higdon

Master of Science in Nursing Theses and Projects

This project is intended to be an example of the affects on the nursing work environment after years of technological advancement, healthcare reform, and process improvement. The bedside nurse work environment is riddled with a multitude of interruptions, intricate processes, and complicated documentation to prove quality care and compliance to regulatory agencies and for tracking purposes. These demands are significant as nurses are continuously reprioritizing work to meet the needs of the patient while also meeting the organizational and regulatory demands. The demands on nurses often lead to delays in patient care and sometimes omission of certain less acute patient …

Change In Metabolic Syndrome And Cardiorespiratory Fitness Following Exercise Training – The Ball State Adult Fitness Longitudinal Lifestyle Study (Ball St), Brittany E Smith E. Smith, James E. Peterman, Matthew P. Harber, Mary T. Imboden, Bradley S. Fleenor, Leonard A. Kaminsky, Mitchell H. Whaley

Faculty Publications - Department of Kinesiology

This observational cohort study indicates an inverse relationship between the change in CRF and the change in MetS severity following exercise training. These results suggest that participation in a community-based exercise program yields significant improvements in CRF, MetS risk factors, the prevalence of the binary MetS, and the MetS severity score. Improvement in CRF through exercise training should be a primary prevention strategy for MetS.

The Importance Of Healthy Lifestyle Behaviors In The Prevention Of Cardiovascular Disease, Leonard A. Kaminsky, Charles German, Mary Imboden, Cemal Ozemek, James E. Peterman, Peter H. Brubaker

Faculty Publications - Department of Kinesiology

Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is the leading cause of death globally. Advancements in the treatment of CVD have reduced mortality rates, yet the global burden of CVD remains high. Considering that CVD is still largely a preventable disease, prioritizing preventative measures through healthy lifestyle (HL) behaviors is necessary to lessen the burden of CVD. HL behaviors, such as regular exercise, healthy eating habits, adequate sleep, and smoking cessation, can influence a number of traditional CVD risk factors as well as a less commonly measured risk factor, cardiorespiratory fitness (CRF). It is important to note that cardiac rehabilitation programs, which traditionally have …

Some Causes, Common Fears, And The Economic Impact Of Immigration From Latin America On The U.S., Joshua Fohner

Theses - Graduate Programs in Economic Theory and Policy

Recently there has been a sharp increase in the promotion of anti-immigration rhetoric and sentiments driven by former President Trump and conservative lawmakers in Washington. These attitudes have led some members of the public to adopt various beliefs of immigrants that are negative or poorly understood. The focus of this paper will be primarily on people from Mexico and other Latin American nations, as people from this part of the world have been

primarily the target of these beliefs. This paper will first analyze some of the social and political reasons why people choose to emigrate from their home countries. …

Moderation Of The Association Between Primary Language And Health By Race And Gender: An Intersectional Approach, Neelam H. Ahmed, Mary L. Greaney, Steven Cohen

Public Health Faculty Publications

In the United States (US), limited English proficiency is associated with a higher risk of obesity and diabetes. “Intersectionality”, or the interconnected nature of social categorizations, such as race/ethnicity and gender, creates interdependent systems of disadvantage, which impact health and create complex health inequities. How these patterns are associated with language-based health inequities is not well understood. The study objective was to assess the potential for race/ethnicity, gender, and socioeconomic status to jointly moderate the association between primary language (English/Spanish) and having obesity and diabetes. Using the 2018 Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (n = 431,045), weighted generalized linear …
