Evolution Of Journal Of Medical Education To Open Access, Ming-Been Lee

Journal of Medical Education

Modern medical education in Taiwan began in 1897. The National Taiwan University College of Medicine (NTUCM) led medical education reform by introducing a new curriculum and small class teaching in August 1992. To celebrate the 100th anniversary of Taiwan medical education, the NTUCM published the Journal of Medical Education (JME) in Mandarin in 1997, hoping to share the education reform and further improve the quality of medical education in Taiwan. For more than 26 years, the JME has grown and served as the platform that supports the work of medical education researchers, medical professionals, administrators, and policymakers. Along with our …

Parents’ Knowledge, Attitudes, And Practices Of Childhood Obesity In Singapore, Paulin Tay Straughan, Chengwei Xu

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

The obesity pandemic is increasingly threatening Asian populations. This is especially so for children from higher-income countries, such as Singapore. Among the various driving factors of obesity, parents’ health knowledge, attitudes, and practices are underexplored. The present study uses a nationally representative sample of 1,491 responses from Singapore to investigate parental knowledge, attitudes, and practices (KAP) about childhood obesity. Latent class analysis (LCA) on parents’ responses to the KAP survey reveals four unique parenting patterns: the limited knowledge group, the group with negative attitudes, the best practice group, and the limited practice group. Children of families in the best practice …

The Effects Of A Low Fodmap Diet On People With Irritable Bowel Syndrome: A Literature Review, Emily Stalder

The Eleanor Mann School of Nursing Undergraduate Honors Theses

Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) is a very common gastrointestinal disorder around the world. There is no known etiology or cure for the disorder, which leaves researchers to develop coping mechanisms for this prevalent issue. A high percentage (10%-15%) of the general population, mostly in Western, industrialized areas, suffer from IBS. A low FODMAP diet (LFD) is something that has been gaining a following over the past 20 years, which has led to research on its ability to minimize symptoms of IBS. The purpose of this literature review is to see what current research has to offer on the LFD’s ability …

Physiology And Biochemistry Of Cold-Hardy Table Grapevines, Annasamy S. Chandrakala Dec 2022

Physiology And Biochemistry Of Cold-Hardy Table Grapevines, Annasamy S. Chandrakala

Master's Theses and Capstones

Grapes are grown worldwide to produce wine, grape juice and are also popular as fresh table grapes or dried raisins. Due to their nutritional value and importance in the multibillion-dollar wine industry, grapes are considered the most commercially important berry crop. Grape production has primarily concentrated on European wine grapes, Vitis vinifera, in the dry, hot Mediterranean and Central Asian climates. V. vinifera is not cold tolerant enough to endure winter temperatures below -15°C. The introduction of several interspecific hybrids (of both wine and table grape) cultivars in the 20th century and selection of a training system has helped propel …

Homelessness has become a global public health concern as it results in poorer physical and mental health than age-matched people living in permanent housing (Ortiz & Roser, 2017). The area that comprises Northwest Arkansas (NWA), like other areas of the United States experiencing rapid growth, has seen a marked increase in the number of people experiencing homelessness in recent years. The homeless population is one of the most vulnerable and underserved groups of individuals in NWA and beyond. Public health nursing as a discipline is dedicated to providing compassionate care and exceptional service for all members of communities, with special …

Environmental Sensitivity Of Maternal And Offspring Phenotype In The Green Anole (Anolis Carolinensis) Lizard, Jamie Marks Dec 2022

Environmental Sensitivity Of Maternal And Offspring Phenotype In The Green Anole (Anolis Carolinensis) Lizard, Jamie Marks

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

Animals dynamically invest their acquired energetic resources into fitness-related traits, and life-history trade-offs occur when limited resources are invested in a given trait at the expense of another. The phenotypic effects of life history trade-offs are well documented, but the mechanisms facilitating these trade-offs are poorly understood. One such mechanism is the insulin/insulin-like signaling (IIS) network, and specifically its two primary hormones: insulin-like growth factor 1 (IGF1) and insulin-like growth factor 2 (IGF2). IGF1 is well-characterized but IGF2 is severely understudied, though it is present in nearly all amniotes and sometimes expressed at higher levels than IGF1 in adulthood. I …

Metabolic Syndrome And Associated Factors Among Hispanic Americans, Shannon L. Richard

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

Metabolic syndrome (MetS) is a cardiometabolic condition that may develop into cardiovascular disease and type 2 diabetes mellitus. Early recognition and associated treatment of MetS can help detour disease. Lifestyle factors, sleep-disordered breathing, and psychological well-being influence the development of MetS; electrocardiogram abnormalities are associated with MetS. Hispanics living in the United States are particularly vulnerable to MetS. Although MetS is well-identified in Americans of Hispanic ethnicity, the current literature evaluating protective and contributory factors among Hispanic gender-ethnic subgroups is inconsistent and incomplete. This study aimed to examine the relationships between MetS and select health and lifestyle factors among seven …

Comparing Forgetting Rates Between Pattern Separation And Item Recognition, Rhiannon N. Soriano Smith Dec 2022

Comparing Forgetting Rates Between Pattern Separation And Item Recognition, Rhiannon N. Soriano Smith

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

Recent theories of forgetting posit that hippocampally-based memory representations are more prone to be forgotten due to decay, while extra-hippocampal representations are more likely to be forgotten due to interference (Hardt, Nader, & Nadel, 2013; Sadeh & Pertzov, 2020). The current study examined this hypothesis by comparing the rate of forgetting between pattern separation, a hippocampally-based process, and item recognition, a process that is reliant on both hippocampal and extra-hippocampal structures. It was hypothesized that pattern separation would display more forgetting due to decay because it is a hippocampally-based process, while item recognition would display more forgetting due to interference …

A Drought-Tolerant Nitrogen-Fixing Symbiont For Sustainable Soybean Production, Christian James Peterson

Biology Dissertations - Archive

Bradyrhizobia are an ideal model organism to study plant-microbe interactions due to dual lifestyles as free-living soil organisms and as endosymbionts for valuable cropping systems in agriculture. Farmers have been utilizing the Soybean-Bradyrhizobium japonicum mutualism for decades to revitalize marginal soils, increase yields, and establish a regenerative approach to farming by mitigating the use of synthetic nitrogenous fertilizers. The largest impediment to bio-fertilizer success is desiccation (e.g., drought) stress before the symbiosis can be established. Due to climate change, fluctuating high temperatures and drought occur seasonally in many growing regions and are becoming a growing concern for modern agriculture. Thus, …

“Chinese Pacificism?” Exploring Chinese News Media Representations Of Pacific Island Countries, Shuo Luan

Pacific Studies

China has ramped up its engagement with Pacific Island countries and established itself as a major cooperative partner and assistance provider. However, the Pacific Islands remain a blind spot for many Chinese people, whose perceptions of island countries are inevitably shaped by dominant discourses at home. Although island countries are aware of China’s growing presence, they are largely uninformed about their images circulated in China. This article seeks to fill this gap by exploring Chinese news media representations of Pacific Island countries. It argues that Chinese news media paint a broad and superficial portrait of island countries because of the …

Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Faculty Publications

Valsa is a genus of ascomycetes within the Valsaceae family. This family includes many wood destructive pathogens such as the well known Valsa mali and Valsa pyri which cause canker diseases in fruit trees and threaten the global fruit production. Lack of genomic information of this family is impeding our understandings about their evolution and genetic basis of their pathogenicity divergence. Here, we report genome assemblies of Valsa malicola, Valsa persoonii, and Valsa sordida which represent close relatives of Valsa mali and Valsa pyri with different host preferences. Comparative genomics analysis revealed that segmental rearrangements, inversions, and translocations …
