Posters

Introduction: Biliary ducal sequelae including occlusions, strictures, leaks, or necrosis frequently complicate pediatric liver transplantation. The underlying etiology includes prolonged intraoperative ischemia or postoperative arterial inflow obstruction. In adult patients the role of endoscopic retrograde cholangiography (ERC) is well established in the management of biliary complications post-liver transplantation. In contrast, in the pediatric population, due to the combination of small patient size and the complexity of Roux-en-Y anastomotic techniques, ERC has been described as difficult or virtually impossible. This limits the options available for managing biliary duct complications to percutaneous techniques Endoscopic management of biliary complications in pediatric patients with …

Women in Adama City are enslaved to generational poverty due to a lack of alternative income generating means and unproductive expenditures related to spiritual practices in hopes of attaining supernatural power. A Self-Help Group is a development intervention approach that is aimed at empowering women. This research critically examines the role of SHGs in promoting holistic transformation of women in three areas: women’s economic empowerment, and socio-political empowerment, and women’s spiritual transformation with reference to the Ethiopian Kale Heywet Church Development Program. The SHG approach will be reviewed within a framework based on the concept of Christian holistic transformation. The …

Something Stinks: The Need For Stronger Agricultural Waste Regulations, Audrey Curelop Oct 2022

Something Stinks: The Need For Stronger Agricultural Waste Regulations, Audrey Curelop

Washington and Lee Law Review

In the twentieth century, the American agricultural industry underwent significant changes—while most food animals were once raised on small family farms, now, over fifty percent are produced entirely inside concentrated animal feeding operations. These large‑scale farming operations house hundreds to thousands of cows, swine, or chickens, which collectively produce hundreds of millions of tons of waste per year. The primary method of waste disposal is land application, a process in which waste is sprayed or spread onto land with no required pretreatment. After land application, waste byproducts make their way into the surrounding air and waterways, posing significant threats to …

Direct Cash Transfers And Tax Policy: Reporting Cash Transfers For Maximum Benefit To The Recipients, Jacqueline Lainez Flanigan Oct 2022

Direct Cash Transfers And Tax Policy: Reporting Cash Transfers For Maximum Benefit To The Recipients, Jacqueline Lainez Flanigan

Book Chapters

Unconditional direct cash transfers (DCTs) are supported by a vast national and international evidence base. They have been shown to have a positive impact on health outcomes, school attendance, child development, household spending, and poverty reduction (Morton et. al., 2020). For young people experiencing homelessness or housing instability, DCTs offer a promising approach for moving swiftly to safe, permanent housing and starting on pathways to independence. While a DCT can be an important source of support and financial safety net, there is currently no express exemption from income for DCTs, potentially impacting a young person’s tax burden. Ultimately, this could …

The War In Ukraine And Food Security In Eastern Europe, Eszter Krasznai Kovács, Agata Bachórz, Natasha Bernstein Bunzl, Diana Mincyte, Fabio Parasecoli, Simone Piras, Mihai Varga

Publications and Research

This dispatch outlines some of the immediate consequences and long-term challenges posed by the Ukraine war on food security and production systems in Eastern Europe. We draw particular attention to the food aid and provisioning realities around many million (and increasing) numbers of Ukrainian refugees, and the current lack of systemic, government-coordinated responses to the humanitarian crisis. Further, we outline the distinct forms of agriculture characterising Eastern Europe, notably, the short supply chains and farming networks that are socially and environmentally unique and valuable, and are a result of the persistence of smaller, family-led farms. However, these farms and farmers …

Ingos In Afghanistan: Impact Of Activities And Attributes On Attack, Kathryn M. Lambert

Journal of Strategic Security

International NGOs (INGOs) operate in insecure environments where they provide life-saving services to the world's neediest populations. This study examines the impact of organizational attributes and activities on INGO vulnerability to insurgent attacks in Afghanistan. The study operationalizes three organizational attributes: 1)sustainability, measured by the organization’s longevity; 2)perceived independence from the Global War on Terrorism (GWOT), measured by whether the INGO operated in Afghanistan before or after September 11, 2001; and 3)religiosity coded as secular, faith-inspired, or faith-based. In addition, the study operationalizes three INGO activities: 1)type of gender-focused activities and programs of each organization; 2)transformational advocacy, measured as promoting …

Telemedicine Perception: An Identification And Evaluation Of Factors Contributing To The Use Of Telemedicine Services, Katherine Lewing

Doctoral Projects

A morbidity and mortality report made by the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) on the impact of telehealth services during the COVID-19 pandemic throughout 2020 noted several instances in which telemedicine tools had contributed to improved patient outcomes, including: increasing the availability of care to patients otherwise left with little access to health care, decreasing unnecessary patient visits, and reduced disease exposure to patients and staff directly at risk (CDC, 2020).

As the utilization of telemedicine becomes more important and prevalent in U.S. health care systems, it is important to recognize factors that inhibit patient usage. Factors such as inadequate …

Vitamin D may be associated with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) pathways. This cross-sectional study evaluated the associations between serum Vitamin D and IBS symptoms in a sample of Lebanese adults. Participants (n = 230; mean (SD) age: 43.36 (16.05) years, 62.9% females) were adults, free of diseases affecting Vitamin D metabolism, and recruited from a large university and the surrounding community. Serum Vitamin D (25-hydroxyvitamin D) was assessed using an automated chemiluminescence micro-particle immunoassay kit. The Birmingham IBS Symptom Questionnaire total scale, and pain, constipation, and diarrhea subscales were used to study IBS symptoms. Four linear regression analyses were performed, …

Project Based Learning For Chronically Absent Students, Amy Lynch Oct 2022

Project Based Learning For Chronically Absent Students, Amy Lynch

School of Education and Leadership Student Capstone Projects

Research has shown that students who are chronically absent from school in the elementary years are far more likely to underperform academically, struggle socially and drop out of high school. Project based learning (PBL) is a process in which students and teachers engage in creation, discussion, and reflection. Teachers guide while students inquire independently and with peers. Learning is acquired through questioning, choice and action (Helle et al., 2006). Project based learning provides the opportunity for teachers to integrate social studies, science, reading, writing, math, and social and emotional skills over several weeks, ultimately creating a project that represents the …

The Impact Of Nature Deficit On Creating Learning Spaces For Children, Kirsten Bergren

School of Education and Leadership Student Capstone Projects

Nature deficit disorder is a problem because it causes a disconnect between people and the environment. Adults have their own experiences with nature deficit disorder and that is impacting their ability to design nature rich environments for children. Recognizing their own experiences can help them to create and enrich the learning environment of their students. This project aims to decrease nature deficit disorder and stress and increase overall health and wellness.

Library Staff Publications

INTRODUCTION: Frailty and sarcopenia are common complications of advanced liver disease. Owing to associated morbidity/mortality, there have been targeted efforts to prevent and/or improve both by enrolling these patients in focused exercise programs. This review systematically analyzes the data of randomized clinical trials (RCTs) on anthropometric, physical fitness, quality-of-life, and safety outcomes of exercise interventions in patients with advanced liver disease.

METHODS: Two authors independently searched trials on PubMed and EMBASE from inception up to November 18, 2021. A third independent arbitrator adjudicated all disagreements. We qualitatively summarized these outcomes as follows: (i) muscular fitness (maximal inspiratory/expiratory pressures, muscle size, …

Gravity And Grace: Foreign Investments And Cultural Heritage In International Investment Law, Valentina Vadi Oct 2022

Gravity And Grace: Foreign Investments And Cultural Heritage In International Investment Law, Valentina Vadi

Vanderbilt Journal of Transnational Law

Globalization and international economic governance have promoted dialogue and interaction among nations, potentially increasing cultural diversity and providing the funds to recover and preserve cultural heritage. However, these phenomena can also jeopardize cultural diversity. Foreign direct investments in the extraction of natural resources have the potential to change cultural landscapes, destroy monuments, and erase memories. In parallel, international investment law constitutes a legally binding and highly effective regime that demands that states promote and facilitate foreign direct investment. Does the existing legal framework adequately protect cultural heritage vis-a-vis the economic interests of foreign investors? To address this question, this Article …

Nutrition Facts Label Use Among U.S. Adolescents, Jennifer Beth Mandelbaum Oct 2022

Nutrition Facts Label Use Among U.S. Adolescents, Jennifer Beth Mandelbaum

Theses and Dissertations

Despite the promise of Nutrition Facts label (NFL) use as a population-level intervention with broad reach, few studies have examined determinants of adolescents’ NFL use, and how this label use may be associated with nutrition behaviors. This study used data from the International Food Policy Study, an online cross-sectional survey of trends in dietary patterns and policy-relevant behaviors in the U.S. and five other countries. First, this study examined 1) whether NFL use was associated with healthy eating efforts and 2) whether there were sociodemographic differences in NFL use among U.S. adolescents. Results demonstrated that NFL use was positively associated …

Industrial Energy Development Decouples Ungulate Migration From The Green Wave, Ellen O. Aikens, Teal B. Wyckoff, Hall Sawyer, Matthew J. Kauffman Oct 2022

Industrial Energy Development Decouples Ungulate Migration From The Green Wave, Ellen O. Aikens, Teal B. Wyckoff, Hall Sawyer, Matthew J. Kauffman

Natural Resource Management Faculty Publications

The ability to freely move across the landscape to track the emergence of nutritious spring green-up (termed ‘green-wave surfing’) is key to the foraging strategy of migratory ungulates. Across the vast landscapes traversed by many migratory herds, habitats are being altered by development with unknown consequences for surfing. Using a unique long-term tracking dataset, we found that when energy development occurs within mule deer (Odocoileus hemionus) migration corridors, migrating animals become decoupled from the green wave. During the early phases of a coalbed natural gas development, deer synchronized their movements with peak green-up. But faced with increasing disturbance …

The Role Of Intertemporal Preferences, Active Consideration Of Health Outcomes, And Simple Health Prompts On The Nutritional Quality Of Food Choices, Olivier Tuyizere Oct 2022

The Role Of Intertemporal Preferences, Active Consideration Of Health Outcomes, And Simple Health Prompts On The Nutritional Quality Of Food Choices, Olivier Tuyizere

Department of Agricultural Economics: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

This thesis consists of three chapters. The first chapter introduces the thesis by highlighting a brief review of intertemporal preferences, active consideration of health outcomes, and health prompts during food choices. The introduction paves the way for the following two chapters, which are related, but stand-alone papers.

In the second chapter, we explore a novel question: how does actively considering health outcomes (both current and future) during decision-making affect the nutritional quality of food choices? We explore this question with an online experiment on food choices. Our findings show that active consideration of health outcomes leads to choosing products with …

Evaluating Interest In Clinical Trial Participation For The Treatment Of Pediatric Food Allergy, Perry Allen Catlin Oct 2022

Evaluating Interest In Clinical Trial Participation For The Treatment Of Pediatric Food Allergy, Perry Allen Catlin

Master's Theses (2009 -)

Food allergy (FA) is a chronic medical condition that affects one out of every 13 children in the United States. Researchers have recently begun utilizing double-blind, placebo-controlled clinical trials to test novel biological treatments designed to retrain the immune system to be less reactive to food allergens. Although these treatments remain in the clinical trial stage, evidence suggests that individuals differentially engage with these options based on a variety of factors. Using a socioecological framework, this study sought to evaluate the effect of child, parent, and family-level factors on parental interest in clinical trial participation for the treatment of pediatric …

Activated Charcoal Versus A Chemical Whitening Agent: Effect On Human Enamel, Hien Thai Doan

Master's Theses (2009 -)

Objective: For many years, the conventional method to achieve a white smile has been chemical regimens such as peroxide compounds. Previous studies suggest risks associated with chemical procedures, so many are seeking out alternative options such as utilizing activated charcoal. Since this new method is rapidly trending, there have not been many scientific studies on how utilizing activated charcoal can affect the mechanical/physical properties of tooth structure. The primary objective of this study was to investigate the effect of activated charcoal on enamel’s mechanical/physical properties and compare it to a conventional tooth whitening method (carbamide peroxide). Materials and Methods: Extracted …
