The COVID-19 pandemic along with its confinement period boosted lifestyle modifications and impacted women and men differently which exacerbated existing gender inequalities. The main objective of this paper is to assess the gender-based differentials in food consumption patterns, dietary diversity and the determinants favoring weight change before and amid the COVID-19 pandemic among Arab men and women from 10 Arab countries. A cross-sectional study was conducted based on a convenience sample of 12,447 households' family members (mean age: 33.2 ± 12.9; 50.1% females) and information from participants aged 18 years and above was collected about periods before and during the …

Gastrointestinal (GI) parasites pose a major health concern in goats raised in pastures. The study objective was to evaluate GI parasites’ prevalence in lactating Kiko does and kids stocked in woodlands with supplemental grazing or feedstuffs. Seventeen lactating Kiko does, and their thirty-three kids were divided into two groups. Group 1 was supplemented with grazing in silvopastures and Group 2 with ad libitum hay and corn (0.5% of metabolic weight) along with stocking in woodland plots rotationally. Fecal samples were analyzed for type and quantity of GI parasites from animals having FAMACHA score 3 and higher. Group-1 does showed a …
Establishing A Small-Scale Pastured Poultry Operation In Kentucky, Frederick N. Bebe
Establishing A Small-Scale Pastured Poultry Operation In Kentucky, Frederick N. Bebe
Professional Agricultural Workers Journal
Pastured poultry is poultry rotationally raised on pasture, as opposed to large-scale confinement operations. There has been a growing demand for pastured poultry as a result of the adverse effects of the use of antibiotics in large-scale caged systems and pastured poultry’s attributable nutritional and economic benefits to consumers. As a result, an increasing number of small-scale farmers in Kentucky have begun raising birds both for personal consumption and for supplemental income, in conjunction with other farm enterprises. Poultry is the number one agricultural commodity in Kentucky. Thus, knowledge of how to establish small-scale pastured poultry operations as an alternate …

Urine creatinine was determined using the Jaffe method. MAU was defined as ACR ≥ 3.5 mg/mmol …
Inequality Of Deservingness, Ariel Jurow Kleiman
Inequality Of Deservingness, Ariel Jurow Kleiman
The Journal of Contemporary Legal Issues
This Essay explores how the U.S. tax system—the primary mechanism for distributing antipoverty cash benefits—is poorly suited to evaluating recipients’ deservingness. In doing so, it defines and formalizes the concept of inequality of deservingness, which is dyadic in nature. The first form of such inequality is that of “true deservingness.” True deservingness is somewhat abstract, arising from the distributive justice frameworks that underlie antipoverty program design in the United States. In Part II, the Essay briefly describes the major federal U.S. antipoverty programs, which mostly target support to families with children, people with disabilities, and workers. Working backwards, I then …

The wide geographic distribution, large size and ease of capture has led to decapod crustaceans being used extensively in laboratory experiments. Recently in the United Kingdom decapod crustaceans were listed as sentient beings, resulting in their inclusion in animal care protocols. Ironically, little is known about how captive conditions affect the survival and general condition of wild decapod crustaceans. We used the green shore crab, Carcinus maenas, to investigate the effects of stocking density and shelter on survival and vitality indices during a 6 month period in the laboratory. Neither stocking density nor the presence of shelter affected survival. Stocking …

Lord Of The Z-Rings: Uncovering The Role Of Mraz And Ftsl In Bacillus Subtilis Cell Division, Maria Louise White
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Cell division is a complex and highly orchestrated process that requires careful coordination. The process of cell division in prokaryotes primarily occurs via binary fission, where one mother cell becomes two genetically identically and equally sized daughter cells. In most bacteria a key protein, FtsZ, forms a FtsZ ring (Z-ring) to mark the division site and recruit proteins involved in cytokinesis. Whilst much has been learned about the contents and assembly of the divisome in model organisms such as Escherichia coli and Bacillus subtilis factors governing the regulation of divisome are much more poorly understood. …

International Journal of Exercise Science
International Journal of Exercise Science 15(2): 1366-1380, 2022. Hericium erinaceus (HE), also known as Lion’s Mane mushroom, has been found to enhance cognition and metabolic flexibility in various animal models. To date however, only four studies exist in humans and none have evaluated the effects of HE on markers of metabolic flexibility or cognitive performance. A single-blind, placebo controlled, parallel-longitudinal study was used to determine the effects of HE on markers of metabolic flexibility and cognition. Twenty-four participants completed a graded exercise test on a cycle ergometer to analyze substrate oxidation rates and markers of cardiorespiratory fitness. Additionally, two dual-task …

LGD-4033, a selective androgen receptor modulator, and MK-677, a growth hormone secretagogue, are becoming increasingly used amongst recreationally-active demographics. However, limited data exist describing their effects on health- and androgen-related biomarkers. The purpose of this case study is to report changes in body composition and biomarkers during and after continued co-administration of LGD-4033 and MK-677. We additionally aimed to examine muscular strength and intramuscular androgen-associated biomarkers relative to non-users. A 25-year-old male ingested LGD-4033 [10 mg] and MK-677 [15 mg] daily for 5 weeks. Blood and body composition metrics were obtained pre-, on-, and post-cycle. One repetition maximum (1RM) leg …
Understanding Motivations Among Sustained Cooperative Extension Partners For Obesity Prevention In Rural Louisiana, Catherine R. Losavio
Understanding Motivations Among Sustained Cooperative Extension Partners For Obesity Prevention In Rural Louisiana, Catherine R. Losavio
LSU Master's Theses
Louisiana consistently has one of the highest rates of obesity in the nation with higher concentrations of obesity in many rural parishes (i.e., counties). Due to over a century of visibility and engagement in rural communities, Cooperative Extension (Extension) is uniquely poised to reach remote rural communities disproportionately impacted by obesity. As Extension increases its use of community coalitions and implements its new National Framework for Health Equity and Well-Being, understanding motivations and communication preferences among long-term rural coalition partners for obesity prevention and health promotion has become essential for duplicating successful local-level policy, system, and environmental (PSE) changes. This …

The link between obesity and multiple disease comorbidities is well established. In 2003, Calle and colleagues presented the relationship between obesity and several cancer types, including breast, ovarian, and endometrial malignancies. Nearly, 20% of cancer-related deaths in females can be accounted for by obesity. Identifying obesity as a risk factor for cancer led to a focus on the role of fat-secreted cytokines, known as adipokines, on carcinogenesis and tumor progression. Early studies indicated that the adipokine leptin increases cell proliferation, invasion, and inhibition of apoptosis in multiple cancer types. As a greater appreciation of the obesity–cancer link has amassed, we …

It is a known fact that large quantities of farm and meat products rot and are wasted if correct actions are not taken, which may lead to serious health issues if consumed. There is no proper system for tracking and communicating the status of the goods to their respective stakeholders in a secure way. Consumers have every right to know the quality of the products they consume. Using monitoring tools, such as the Internet of Agricultural Things (IoAT), and modern data protection techniques for storing and sharing, will help mitigate data integrity issues during the transmission of sensor records, increasing …

In a published randomized controlled trial, household units were randomized to a nutrient bar supplementation group or a control condition, but the non-independence of observations within the same household (i.e., the clustering effect) was not accounted for in the statistical analyses. Therefore, we reanalyzed the data appropriately by adjusting degrees of freedom using the between-within method, and accounting for household units using linear mixed effect models with random intercepts for family units and subjects nested within family units for each reported outcome. Results from this reanalysis showed that ignoring the clustering and nesting effects in the original analyses had resulted …

Dwarfing is an important agricultural trait for intensive cultivation and effective orchard management in modern fruit orchards. Commercial citrus production relies on grafting with rootstocks that reduce tree vigor to control plant height. Citrus growers all over the world have been attracted to dwarfing trees because of their potential for higher planting density, increased productivity, easy harvest, pruning, and efficient spraying. Dwarfing rootstocks can be used to achieve high density. As a result, the use and development of dwarfing rootstocks are important. Breeding programs in several countries have led to the production of citrus dwarf rootstocks. For example, the dwarfing …

Obesity in pregnancy induces metabolic syndrome, low-grade inflammation, altered endocrine factors, placental function, and the maternal gut microbiome. All these factors impact fetal growth and development, including brain development. The lipid metabolic transporters of the maternal-fetal-placental unit are dysregulated in obesity. Consequently, the transport of essential long-chain PUFAs for fetal brain development is disturbed. The mother's gut microbiota is vital in maintaining postnatal energy homeostasis and maternal-fetal immune competence. Obesity during pregnancy changes the gut microbiota, affecting fetal brain development. Obesity in pregnancy can induce placental and intrauterine inflammation and thus influence the neurodevelopmental outcomes of the offspring. Several epidemiological …

Interactions Between Juvenile Estuary-Dependent Fishes And Microalgal Dynamics, Ian C. Williams
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The ontogenetic movement of juvenile estuary-dependent fishes upstream in estuarine settings is a phenomenon observed around the world. These movements usually coincide with a shift in diet from smaller prey, such as calanoid copepods, to larger prey, such as mysids. However, the mechanism that drives this pattern has yet to be conclusively described. Prior to the current study, zooplankton/hyperbenthos (“zooplankton”), primary production, and water quality data were collected from the Caloosahatchee River estuary in two concurrent and coordinated studies over a two-year period. One of the products of these sampling efforts was a classification of primary-producer types at the sediment-water …

RURALS: Review of Undergraduate Research in Agricultural and Life Sciences
Western monarch butterfly populations have sharply declined over the last three decades largely due to destruction of their habitat and larval food source, milkweed (Asclepias spp.). In order to aid reestablishment of milkweed habitat in support of Western monarch populations, the effects of soil pollutants and additives on the plant’s growth and toxin production should be examined. We evaluated five growth parameters and cardenolide concentration of showy milkweed (A. speciosa) exposed to various soil treatments of Roundup and arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi in controlled greenhouse conditions. Our results suggest that residual Roundup in soil does not affect cardenolide …

Crop evapotranspiration (ETa) is the main source of water loss in farms and watersheds, and with its effects felt at a regional scale, it calls for irrigation professionals and water resource managers to accurately assess water requirements to meet crop water use. On a multi-crop commercial farm, different factors affect cropland allocation, among which crop evapotranspiration is one of the most important factors regarding the seasonally or annually available water resources for irrigation in combination with the in-season effective precipitation. The objective of the present study was to estimate crop evapotranspiration for four major crops grown on the Navajo Agricultural …

Influence Of Perceived Parental Alcoholism, Stimuli, Coping, And Adaptation On Children's Alcohol Consumption, Angelica Susana López Arellano, Karla Selene López García, Frederickson Keville, Rosa MaríA Díaz Hurtado
General Submissions: Presentations (Oral and Poster)
When parents (father and/or mother) present problematic alcohol consumption in the family, their children usually have negative health responses, affecting their lives; however, not all of these children present these negative responses. In Mexico there are regulations, norms and health programs that protect adolescents from alcohol consumption because they are minors, but despite this, the prevalence of alcohol consumption in them continues to rise and the onset of alcohol consumption occurs at increasingly younger ages, so it is important to study the family variables that influence alcohol consumption and their lives, especially those of the parents.
