Nuclear Power Source For Mars Base Tempr, Liam Assenza, Gage Blanchflower, Mitch Dimartino, Adam Fabi, Jack Hogan
Mechanical Engineering Capstone Design Projects
Team 12 was tasked with designing a nuclear power system to power a crewed base on Mars. The power system must be robust, reliable, modular, and require minimal maintenance. In September 2022, the team began by conducting research and discovery. Early research into Mars outpost power requirements and environmental factors led to the formation of design specifications. The requirements included a 150 kWe power requirement for a 4 person crewed base, a 30 year lifespan, and requirements for Mars wind speeds, emitted radiation, waste heat reprocessing, and core neutronics properties. Literature and patent searches were then conducted, sparking ideation within …
A Comprehensive Bison Management And Research Plan For The Crane Trust, Joshua D. Wiese
A Comprehensive Bison Management And Research Plan For The Crane Trust, Joshua D. Wiese
Other Publications in Wildlife Management
The Great Plains were once a vast grassland ecosystem, but, due to agricultural and human development, are one of the most endangered ecosystems in North America. What remains is generally fragmented, threatened by invasive species, and lacks the natural ecosystem processes that shaped these grasslands such as periodic wildfire and bison grazing. Since 1978, the Platte River Whooping Crane Maintenance Trust, Inc. (dba “Crane Trust”) has worked to maintain the function of grassland and riparian habitats to benefit endangered Whooping Cranes, Sandhill Cranes, and other migratory bird species. They protect ~8,100 acres, including the largest contiguous portion of lowland tallgrass …

Louis Choris And Scientific Illustration: Visualizing Colonialism In New California, Bella R. Pettengill
Louis Choris And Scientific Illustration: Visualizing Colonialism In New California, Bella R. Pettengill
2022 Claremont Colleges Library Undergraduate Research Award
This paper investigates artist Louis Choris and his book of scientific illustrations, Voyage Pittoresque autor de monde (1815), as a case study for the larger dilemma of visualizing factual modes of documentation. With a specific focus on Choris’s anthropological drawings of the indigenous people from the San Francisco Bay area and mission, it is argued how the decisions that must be made when representing something contain inherent biases. This contrasts with the functional usage of these drawings as documents meant to depict objective realities, especially in a time marked by heightened interest in taxonomy and the natural sciences. Above all, …
Setting The Oppressed Free: Ministry Among The Chin In Myanmar, Abby Wilson
Setting The Oppressed Free: Ministry Among The Chin In Myanmar, Abby Wilson
People Group & Region Research (Capstone Papers)
Significant challenges for the Chin of Myanmar in a ministry context include the continued hostility of the Burmese government and military towards ethnic and religious minorities. They have many ministry needs that are currently being met by several nonprofit organizations. This includes both organizations that have sent workers from abroad and indigenous organizations comprised of Chin people themselves. By reviewing the strategies of these organizations as well as the religious history of the Chin, appropriate strategies for holistic outreach can be determined.

Systematic Integration Of Applications Into The Surface Biology And Geology (Sbg) Earth Mission Architecture Study, Christine M. Lee, Nancy F. Glenn, E. Natasha Stavros, Jeff Luvall, Karen Yuen, Stephanie Schollaert Uz
Geosciences Faculty Publications and Presentations
The Surface Biology and Geology (SBG) concept is the first National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) Earth mission to develop and implement systematic integration of science application needs at the architecture study stage. Prior NASA mission concept and planning activities presumed that science measurement needs would encompasss application measurement needs and so did not explicitly evaluate and include applications at this stage. However, the effort presented here identified, documented and integrated application needs that would not have been included by considering research science needs only. First, a low latency of no greater than 24 hr was identified as the optimal …
Kwame Bediako Makes An Offer, Joel Carpenter
Kwame Bediako Makes An Offer, Joel Carpenter
University Faculty Publications and Creative Works
This review essay addresses the major themes of Ghanaian theologian Kwame Bediako’s thought, as presented in Tim Hartman, Kwame Bediako: African Theology for a World Christianity. Bediako advocated examining the traditional spirituality of African peoples, studying the Bible in vernacular languages, and asking how the person and work of Jesus Christ engage local cultures. He insisted that Western theology was not central and normative to the Christian faith, and that African theology provided a better model for the development of contextual theologies worldwide.
The Continuity Mindset For Christian Mission, Jack T. Davison
The Continuity Mindset For Christian Mission, Jack T. Davison
Great Commission Research Journal
Missionaries from the Global North regularly serve as trainers for Christians in the Global South. From personal experience, missionaries are regularly seen as being qualified to do this work simply because of their position. Rather than missionaries assuming they are competent purely on the basis of their titles, I believe they should instead practice the Continuity Mindset for Christian Mission, a mindset that emphasizes the continuity of one’s identity and ministry in one’s home culture with one’s identity and ministry in the host culture. This practice includes elements of vulnerable mission, nonresidential mission, tentmaking, cultural intelligence, and authentic leadership. I …
Dancing And Poetry: A Study Of The Whirling Dervish Dance Through Rumi’S Poetry, Tasneem Huq
Dancing And Poetry: A Study Of The Whirling Dervish Dance Through Rumi’S Poetry, Tasneem Huq
Honors Program: Senior Projects (Public)
This exploration investigates the influence of Rumi’s book of poetry, Mathnawi, upon the Sufi practice of the Whirling Dervish dances. It argues that Rumi’s Mathnawi underlies the choreography of the Whirling Dervish dances. Each step of the dance expresses, manifests or embodies themes found in Rumi’s poetry: separation from Unity, ascension, annihilation, and a return to Unity. The thesis introduces this argument, and then discusses historical, theological, and linguistic themes related to Rumi, Sufism, and the Whirling Dervish dances. Following this, the thesis provides a framework that begins with the Neoplatonic theory of emanation grounding Rumi’s poetic thought, followed by …
Anti-Urbanism In Culture And In The Adventist Church: Advocacy And Action For Urban Ministry In The Twentieth Century—Part 2, Jerry R. Chase
Anti-Urbanism In Culture And In The Adventist Church: Advocacy And Action For Urban Ministry In The Twentieth Century—Part 2, Jerry R. Chase
Journal of Adventist Mission Studies
This article explores the response within the Seventh-day Adventist Church after Ellen G. White’s death to the dual emphases in her writings on the city and rural living. On one hand she strongly encouraged large Adventist institutions and families raising children to locate out of the cities. This was because of the advantages natural surroundings have on physical, emotional, and spiritual wellbeing, and to shield children and young adults from the evils and temptations of the city. While she recognized the evils in the city and God’s impending judgments, she aggressively pushed church leaders to take a more active role …
Deliverance Ministry Among Adventists In The North American Context, Conrad Vine
Deliverance Ministry Among Adventists In The North American Context, Conrad Vine
Journal of Adventist Mission Studies
Deliverance Ministry (DM) among Adventists in North America is a rarely discussed topic. In North American Adventism, it is uncommon for those who do experience demonization to openly discuss their spiritual plight with fellow Adventists, or even with their pastors. Empirical feedback from those who seek deliverance, and from the participants at the International Fellowship of Adventist Mission Studies / Swallen Mission Conference organized by the Department of World Mission at the Adventist Seminary, Andrews University (September 2015) indicates that many Adventist pastors and seminarians in North America feel relatively unprepared to respond to requests for deliverance from members.
Footholds And Strongholds, Kelvin Onongha
Footholds And Strongholds, Kelvin Onongha
Journal of Adventist Mission Studies
At creation God made humans in His image and likeness, endowing them with powers and abilities akin to their Creator. One distinguishing quality which humans alone possessed, unique from all other creatures, was the power of choice—the will. This unique attribute made humans the only creatures with the ability to say yes or no to God. Since the devil’s fall from glory, it has been his mission to deceive and enlist others in his rebellion against the sovereignty of God. Continuing the work of deception and rebellion he began in heaven before he and his confederates were forcefully expelled, he …
Can Christians Be Possessed By Evil Spirits?, Kelvin Onongha
Can Christians Be Possessed By Evil Spirits?, Kelvin Onongha
Journal of Adventist Mission Studies
In the African ministry context, accusations of demon possession are commonplace. It would appear that every strange, bizarre, or abnormal form of behavior is attributed to demon possession. Unfortunately, in many cases there is a very thin line between occurrences of mental disorder and demonization. This is because the symptoms in several instances are quite similar, and the precursors may be quite complex. For these reasons, another article in this issue sought to address the issue of discerning whether certain conditions were caused by mental disorders or demonization.
In addition, the predisposition to regard every unexplained behavior as having a …

Demonization Of Christians: Missiological Perspectives And Implications, Michée Badé
Demonization Of Christians: Missiological Perspectives And Implications, Michée Badé
Journal of Adventist Mission Studies
This article is a missiological reflection on the phenomenon of Christian demonization from a Seventh-day Adventist (SDA) perspective. The article argues from the four voices approach in theology (see Cameron et al. 2010; Cameron and Duce 2013), and contends that Christians can be demonized, have been demonized throughout the Christian church history, and are still demonized today across all Christian denomination lines. This is the position that appears in a few SDA publications, and is not in contradiction with the Scriptures. I suggest that demonization and demon possession are etymologically and phenomenologically the same. Thus, this paper builds on the …
The African Worldview And Belief In The Demonic, Kelvin Onongha
The African Worldview And Belief In The Demonic, Kelvin Onongha
Journal of Adventist Mission Studies
The African continent displays rich diversity in geography, culture, history, and language. In spite of this heterogeneity in several respects it still has many similarities. These similarities are to a great extent evident in its rich cultures, but especially in its religious worldview. For that reason, the debate still rages whether the religion appertaining to the region should be referred to as African Traditional Religion (ATR), or African Traditional Religions. The arguments on both sides are compelling. A close examination of the worldviews held by a large portion of Africans however reveals amazing similarities. The African worldview associated with the …
Discerning The Condition: Disease Or Demonic, Ugochukwu Elems
Discerning The Condition: Disease Or Demonic, Ugochukwu Elems
Journal of Adventist Mission Studies
Psychologists, psychiatrists, psychotherapists, anthropologists, some pastors, and other related professionals tend to go to the other extreme and dismiss the reality of demonic manifestations. They often explain that the Bible narratives of demonic encounters are myths, hence the need to demythologize the Scripture’s claim. Yet it is not possible to deny the historicity of the biblical claims, nor can any objective reader of the Scriptures ignore the existence and influence of demons among people today. In fact, the Bible clearly asserts the reality and existence of demons.
The dividing line between disease and demonic possession is very thin, which poses …
Ellen G. White’S Statements In Their Original Context On The Heathen Being Saved, Andrew Tompkins
Ellen G. White’S Statements In Their Original Context On The Heathen Being Saved, Andrew Tompkins
Journal of Adventist Mission Studies
This article is a study of a number of statements found in the writings of Ellen G. White on the experience of the heathen who have not heard about Jesus or God’s law. A brief section on the historical theological setting during the lifetime of Ellen White, specifically as it relates to the question of the eternal destiny of the heathen, will preface the primary portion of the study. The question of the eternal destiny became a major discussion issue, in the wider Protestant world, during the lifetime of Ellen White. It was also an issue that John Wesley addressed …

How To Engage Voluntary Spirit Possession Rituals In Mission: The Case Of The Dendi Adorcism Ritual, Michée Badé
How To Engage Voluntary Spirit Possession Rituals In Mission: The Case Of The Dendi Adorcism Ritual, Michée Badé
Journal of Adventist Mission Studies
Missionaries face unique challenges when confronted with spirit possession rituals. Because not all spirit possessions are regarded as negative in some cultures, some spirit possessions are sought through adorcism rituals. Such spirit possessions are considered advantageous for the individual or the community. Contrasted with exorcism which is to expel or bind troublesome or uninvited entities, adorcism creates or strengthens beneficial ties between the possessed person and the spirits (Openshaw 2020:6).
This article seeks to show that the practice of adorcism rituals, as is the case among the Dendi people in the northern part of Benin, presents a unique challenge to …
Lgbtq Student Experiences And Perceptions In Christian Higher Education: An Exploration Of Institutional Climate And Lgbtq Persistence, Anthony M. Ungaro
Lgbtq Student Experiences And Perceptions In Christian Higher Education: An Exploration Of Institutional Climate And Lgbtq Persistence, Anthony M. Ungaro
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The experiences of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ) students at faith-based institutions that influence perceptions and persistence are not well known. Although institutions are committed to student growth and development, LGBTQ students are often treated with religious stigmatization and discrimination. This qualitative phenomenological research gave LGBTQ students a voice to share experiences that impact perceptions of campus climate, strategies that lead to persistence, and recommendations to strengthen institutional inclusiveness. The interview results from six LGBTQ students at various Christian institutions associated with the Council for Christian College and Universities provided in-depth considerations for faith-based institutions, specifically Christian, to …
The Fabc Vision Of Inculturation And The Pedagogical Renewal Of Catechesis In The Philippines, William M. Parde Jr.
The Fabc Vision Of Inculturation And The Pedagogical Renewal Of Catechesis In The Philippines, William M. Parde Jr.
Loyola Papers
Advocating the crafting of inculturated catechisms, this paper calls for a pedagogy of faith built not from the desks of catechetical authorities but from the ground. In this pedagogical renewal, necessitated by changing times and circumstances, the paper finds a rallying point and guiding principle in the FABC’s call for inculturation understood as “dialogue.” At the same time, it identifies a number of ongoing challenges that hinder this process, including notions and methodologies of inculturation that can be unilateral and amount to a kind of imposition on the receiving culture, which possesses its own customs and practices. The paper then …

Fethullah Gülen: A Man With A Mission, Victor Edwin Sj
Asia Pacific Mission Studies
“Are Fethullah Gülen and the Hizmet (service) community friends or foes?’ I must answer that they are our friends. They are the kind of Muslim interlocutors for an active dialogue which we have been searching for since the time of Nostra Aetate.” With these words Fr. Tom Michel, SJ introduced the present writer to the members of the Hizmet movement in Delhi. Fethullah Gülen is a Turkish scholar and teacher of the Holy Qur'an, who has inspired a global movement of millions of individuals to dedicate themselves to literacy, social enterprise, and interreligious dialogue to build peace in the world. …
The Church's Mission Of Dialogue In The Digital Age, Anthony Le Duc Svd
The Church's Mission Of Dialogue In The Digital Age, Anthony Le Duc Svd
Asia Pacific Mission Studies
The development of Internet Communication Technology (ICT) has led the world into a new context with social, philosophical, and theological implications. It also presents missionary challenges that demand due response from Church leaders and members. This paper explores the nature of the present context and the ramifications that this milieu holds for the Catholic Church and the Church's relationship with other religions. Close examination indicates that the digital age characterized by exponential increase in knowledge production, heightened sense of enclavism, and difficult to control disinformation about religions and religious matters places society at great risks for interreligious misunderstanding and conflict. …

Thomas O'Shaughnessy, Sj & Fazlur Rahman: The Incarnation In The Qur'Ān, Renato T. Oliveros Phd
Asia Pacific Mission Studies
The Incarnation of Jesus Christ (Eisa al-Masih), a central Christian doctrine that the eternal “Word became flesh” is confirmed in the Qur'ān as the Logos named the Christ (Q. 3:45). The Spirit (Ruh) in Surah 19, and the Word (Christ) in Surah 3 confirm the Incarnation narrative in the Gospels of Luke 1 and John 1. In the spirit of Ignatius’ openness to extra-Biblical sources in the Spiritual Exercises (SPEX), Qur’ānic sources can be integrated in the Ignatian contemplation on the Incarnation. O’Shaughnessy and F. Rahman argue that the Rūḥ al-qudus ( القدس روح , “Holy Spirit”) is not the …

Rites–Christian And Non-Christian–In A Cosmic Liturgy Of Fraternity, Nihal Abeyasingha
Rites–Christian And Non-Christian–In A Cosmic Liturgy Of Fraternity, Nihal Abeyasingha
Asia Pacific Mission Studies
The present article starts from the Past-Present-Future dimensions of sacraments, to which Vagaggini has added the moral-dispositive element (commitment). These four dimensions within the Christian perspective can be analysed as (1) anamnesis, presentation of gifts and persons, (2) epiclesis, invoking Spirit to transform gifts and weld together persons, (3) eschatology, and (4) theosis. When applied in a non-Christian environment, one can expand these four elements in terms of (1) narration (memory), (2) presentation of themselves through whatever gestures, (3) fulfillment/maturation and, (4) generativity. Through this analysis, one can speak of even non-Christians being united in a cosmic liturgy in the …
