A Correlational Investigation Of Father Emotional Presence And Gender Role Identity In African American Women, Malika Dandridge
A Correlational Investigation Of Father Emotional Presence And Gender Role Identity In African American Women, Malika Dandridge
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
The psychological well-being and gender role development of a woman is greatly affected by the emotional presence of her father growing up. Until recently, most of the research on father-daughter relationships has been done on Caucasian working-class families, and very little has been done on father-daughter relationships in the African American community. The purpose of this study was to examine the role of a father’s emotional presence (dependable, involved, engaged) and uncover whether this type of presence was correlated with a woman’s gender role identity among African American women aged 18 years of age or older. The socioeconomic status (working …

Hope's Moderating Effects On Crisis Workers' Meaning In Work And Turnover Intentions, Rachel Alexis Drosdick-Sigafoos
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
High turnover in the human services field has been a widespread issue, with the annual turnover rate above 31% from 2015 to 2019. Such turnover disrupts client care and burdens workers who stay, increasing turnover intentions among remaining team members. Researchers have examined turnover risk factors, with meaning in work emerging as a reliable protective factor against turnover intentions. This study was conducted to assess the relationship between meaning in work in turnover intentions, hope and turnover intentions, and whether hope moderated the relationship between meaning in work and turnover intentions among crisis-serving human services professionals (HSPs). A quantitative, cross-sectional, …

Observations of Pedagogical Excellence of Teaching Across Nations (OPETAN) is a mixed methods observation study of 31 content teachers, most nominated for their excellence in teaching multilingual students in Germany, Finland, the US, and England. The study relied on an observation rubric that operationalizes seven Enduring Principles of Learning grounded in critical sociocultural theory and pedagogy. Findings revealed excellent teachers emphasize complex thinking, language use, and modeling. Teacher use of small groups, contextualization, and equity-focused practices were areas of potential growth. International research holds promise for understanding and improving K-12 content teaching and teacher education for teachers of multilingual learners.

Representing Transition Experiences: A Multimodal Critical Discourse Analysis Of Young Immigrants In Children’S Literature, Xiaoyan Gu, Theresa Catalano
Department of Teaching, Learning, and Teacher Education: Faculty Publications
Because literature can serve as a mirror for children’s self-reflection and a window into humanizing insights on immigrants and immigration, it can be a powerful educational tool to promote understanding of immigrant learner’s experiences and needs. However, this has not always been the case. As such, informed by our theoretical framework of critical discourse studies (CDS) and raciolinguistics, this study explores the representations of immigrant children’s experiences in children’s literature. Employing multimodal critical discourse analysis, the authors analyze the visual and verbal representations of immigrant children (and the ideologies behind them) in 18 picture books with immigration themes. Findings reveal …

Department of Teaching, Learning, and Teacher Education: Faculty Publications
For more than 40 years, the relocation of meatpacking from urban to rural communities and the related change of who works in these high-risk, modestly compensated positions has brought Spanish-speaking and African and Asian refugee populations to communities like the seven focal Nebraska communities we consider here. These seven, five rural and two part of multi-county metropolitan areas, all have majority Latinx school enrollments and they all have been particularly hard hit by both the first and third waves of the COVID-19 pandemic. They were each also foci of a special new course we co-taught in December 2020 called: “Pandemics, …
Reconsidering The Nomos In Today’S Media Environment, Kimberlianne Podlas
Reconsidering The Nomos In Today’S Media Environment, Kimberlianne Podlas
Touro Law Review
Today’s media landscape is wholly unlike that which existed when Cover first discussed narrative and the nomos; specifically, the status of television as both a cultural messenger and object of scholarly study has changed significantly. Accordingly, this article contemplates narrative in the contemporary media environment, specifically, television as an essential source of narratives. To enhance understandings of the roles television narratives play and which narratives play a role, this article employs an empirical perspective. Surveying Media Theory, it outlines research on television effects, including when and why television’s representations of law can impact audience attitudes, behaviors, perceptions, knowledge, and judgements. …
Reflections On Nomos: Paideic Communities And Same Sex Weddings, Marie A. Failinger
Reflections On Nomos: Paideic Communities And Same Sex Weddings, Marie A. Failinger
Touro Law Review
Robert Cover’s Nomos and Narrative is an instructive tale for the constitutional battle over whether religious wedding vendors must be required to serve same-sex couples. He helps us see how contending communities’ deep narratives of martyrdom and obedience to the values of their paideic communities can be silenced by the imperial community’s insistence on choosing one community’s story over another community’s in adjudication. The wedding vendor cases call for an alternative to jurispathic violence, for a constitutionally redemptive response that prizes a nomos of inclusion and respect for difference.
