Despite the unabated growth of algorithmic decision-making in organizations, there is a growing consensus that numerous situations will continue to require humans in the loop. However, the blending of a formal machine and bounded human rationality also amplifies the risk of what is known as local rationality. Therefore, it is crucial, especially in a data-abundant environment that characterizes algorithmic decision-making, to devise means to assess performance holistically. In this paper, we propose a simulation-based model to address the current lack of research on quantifying algorithmic interventions in a broader organizational context. Our approach allows the combining of causal modeling and …
A Non-Negative Matrix Factorization Approach To Computing “Fingerprints” In Spectra Of Nuclear Materials, Kian Greene
A Non-Negative Matrix Factorization Approach To Computing “Fingerprints” In Spectra Of Nuclear Materials, Kian Greene
Student Research Symposium (SRS)
The objective of this Research Experience for Undergraduates is to compare features between a Principal Component Analysis (PCA) approach and a Non-negative Matrix Factorization (NNMF) approach towards interpreting a UV-vis spectral data set. Furthermore, the development of a predictive model to determine plutonium concentrations in different nitric acid solutions based on the PCA and NNMF information is also a goal of this project. At first, MATLAB software was used to read and work with the original spectral data set. However, as the project developed, Python was then used to implement both dimensionality reduction algorithms. Moreover, the linear models made from …

Angular diameter measurements by the Very Energetic Radiation Imaging Telescope Array System (VERITAS) Stellar Intensity Interferometer (SII) in a waveband near 400 nm complement existing angular diameter measurements in the near-infrared. VSII observations will test fundamental predictions of stellar atmosphere models and should be more sensitive to limb darkening and gravity darkening effects than measurements in the near-IR, however, the magnitude of this difference has not been systematically explored in the literature. In order to investigate the synthetic interferometric (as well as spectroscopic) appearance of stars in the blue relative to the near-IR, we have computed grids of model atmospheres …

“A Woman ‘In The Snow Among The Clocks And Instruments’”: How Adrienne Rich Reimagined The Lives Of Women Astronomers, Kayla Taylor, Ashley Q. Lear Phd
Student Research Symposium (SRS)
Through the lens of historiography, this research examines how the experiences of women in astronomy relate more profoundly than differing historical periods might suggest given metaphors in Adrienne Rich’s poem “Planetarium.” Rich’s poem reimagines common obstacles that female astronomers faced throughout their vocation, conjuring from their lives a new narrative for women in science. Rich uses astronomy as a metaphor for her and other women scientists’ experiences as they struggle to tune out competing personal and professional responsibilities and strive to locate the signal representing purpose and discovery. This presentation seeks to contribute a new perspective in science communication by …

Animation As An Early Source For Metaphor Acquisition By Younger Children, Dr. Mahmoud Arif Edan
Animation As An Early Source For Metaphor Acquisition By Younger Children, Dr. Mahmoud Arif Edan
Midad AL-Adab Refereed Quarterly Journal
The purpose of this study is to highlight evidence the animations the primary source for younger children to acquire metaphors. They can make use of those cartoons to recognise and activate their conceptual maps. The study applied the Conceptual Metaphor Theory (CMT) by Lakoff, & Johnson (1980) to be the theoretical framework of this study. The data collection is one-on-one method interviews (or face to face) which is the major and commonest type of the data collection methods in research whose nature is qualitative, yet this research applies the mixed method that combines the prose of the quantitative and qualitative …

There are many studies that dealt with the topic of solar radiation in general, but rarely there is a study that dealt with the topic of calculating the transparency of the atmosphere in details , so we dealt with this topic in detail and with some capacity to obtain new and more realistic results that are used in many fields , through using many mathematical models and equations in which the permeability values of the atmosphere were calculated, namely the calculation of the permeability of oxygen gas and carbon dioxide. This research dealt with calculating the permeability values of the …

A Review Of Risk Concepts And Models For Predicting The Risk Of Primary Stroke, Elizabeth Hunter, John D. Kelleher
A Review Of Risk Concepts And Models For Predicting The Risk Of Primary Stroke, Elizabeth Hunter, John D. Kelleher
Articles
Predicting an individual's risk of primary stroke is an important tool that can help to lower the burden of stroke for both the individual and society. There are a number of risk models and risk scores in existence but no review or classification designed to help the reader better understand how models differ and the reasoning behind these differences. In this paper we review the existing literature on primary stroke risk prediction models. From our literature review we identify key similarities and differences in the existing models. We find that models can differ in a number of ways, including the …

An In Silico Study Of The Delta Opioid Receptor Using Small Molecules, Emily Dean
An In Silico Study Of The Delta Opioid Receptor Using Small Molecules, Emily Dean
Theses and Dissertations
The DOR is the least studied out of the three opioid receptors (Mu, Kappa, and Delta). The most is known of the Mu Opioid receptor (MOR) and the drugs that target it have led to the global opioid epidemic due to their adverse effects of tolerance and addiction. The DOR is not known for the same adverse effects and therefore, is a promising pharmacological target for the development of new opioid ligands. In this thesis, molecular modeling, simulations and other computational methods are introduced in Chapter 1 where these methods are used to study the activation mechanism of DOR (Chapter …
Evaluating Multi-Agent Modeller Representations, Jonathan Demke
Evaluating Multi-Agent Modeller Representations, Jonathan Demke
Theses and Dissertations
The way a multi-agent modeller represents an agent not only affects its ability to reason about agents but also the interpretability of its representation space as well as its efficacy on future downstream tasks. We utilize and repurpose metrics from the field of representation learning to specifically analyze and compare multi-agent modellers that build real-valued vector representations of the agents they model. By generating two datasets and analyzing the representations of multiple LSTM- or transformer-based modellers with various embedding sizes, we demonstrate that representation metrics provide a more complete and nuanced picture of a modeller's representation space than an analysis …
