Quality Of Experience Assurance In Wireless Networks For Mpeg-4 Transmission, Mohd Najwan Md. Khambari

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics Theses

The evolution of IEEE 802.11 wireless local area network (WLAN) has emerged as the most preferred choice for organizations as well as end users and consumers to access the network, especially the Internet. Today, WLAN technology has becoming more mature and slowly taking over the job for information sharing which was once borne by wired networks. WLAN has not only been used to transfer data packets, but also multimedia packets that are more time sensitive. Given the nature of WLAN which is prone to interference, several challenges need to be encountered for WLAN to keep abreast with the ability of …

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics Theses

Wave Energy Converters (WECs) have been shown to offer a promising option for power generation. The WaveCat is a moored WEC design which uses wave overtopping discharge into a variable v-shaped hull, to generate electricity through low head turbines. Physical model tests of the WaveCat WEC were carried out at the University of Plymouth COAST Laboratory to determine the device reflection, transmission and absorption coefficients. 60° and 30° wedge angles were tested, where wedge angle is the angle between the two hulls. Motion response of the WaveCat model was also quantified. The device heave and pitch motions were simulated using …

Biosensing With Back-Gated Graphene Field Effect Transistors, Benjamin O'Driscoll Jan 2022

Biosensing With Back-Gated Graphene Field Effect Transistors, Benjamin O'Driscoll

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics Theses

The widespread existence of the heavy metal lead in the environment is a severe threat to the health of humans. Lead is a neurotoxin that accumulates over time in the body restricting the cognitive, behavioural and psychological development of children. Since water is one exposure route for chemical hazards like Pb2+ it is envisioned that monitoring drinking water sources with low-cost, sensitive and field-suitable devices is one way that human exposure can be limited. Herein presents graphene field effect transistors (GFETs) functionalised with aptamers as bioreceptors, for the specific detection of Pb2+ ions in water. Functionalising GFETs with bioreceptors facilitates …

Development Of A Novel Antibacterial Silver Nanocoating To Reduce Nosocomial Infections, James Butler Jan 2022

Development Of A Novel Antibacterial Silver Nanocoating To Reduce Nosocomial Infections, James Butler

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics Theses

Nosocomial infections (those that are hospital-acquired) lead to patient morbidity and mortality, and are further complicated by the growing problem of antimicrobial resistance. Wastewater plumbing systems (WPS) are bacterial reservoirs and vehicles for bacterial transmission. Sink traps form a barrier between users and the WPS, but breaches can lead to contamination and have been implicated in outbreaks of infections. This project sought to address the need for a novel antimicrobial nanocoating to reduce bacterial colonisation and biofilm formation in sink traps. A nanocoating was developed by embedding silver nanoparticles in a matrix of commercially-available and low-cost pipe cement, applied to …

Optimisation Of Wireless Disaster Telecommunication Network Based On Network Functions Virtualisation Under Special Consideration Of Energy Consumption, Auberlin Paguem Tchinda

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics Theses

A working communication network is a key element in saving human lives after a disaster event. However, analysis of past disaster events shows significant damage to common communication network infrastructures such as the mobile network or landline. Consequently, a new communication network (Emergency Communication Network (ECN)) must be established immediately after the disaster to support rescue operations (e.g., civil protection, police, and volunteers) and to enable communication between the affected people. The established network is subject to several requirements. These requirements can be divided into infrastructure and service requirements. Infrastructure requirements include rapid deployment of the communication network, complete coverage …

This chapter assesses the current state of the science regarding the composition, intensity, and drivers of wildland fire emissions in the USA and Canada. Globally and in the USA wildland fires are a major source of gases and aerosols which have significant air quality impacts and climate interactions. Wildland fire smoke can trigger severe pollution episodes with substantial effects on public health. Fire emissions can degrade air quality at considerable distances downwind, hampering efforts by air regulators to meet air standards. Fires are a major global source of aerosols which affect the climate system by absorbing and scattering radiation and …

Articles

A novel all-optical modulator based on a microfibre coil resonator (MCR) functionalized using MXene is reported. The MCR was manufactured by winding a tapered fibre on a polycarbonate (PC) resin cylinder with low refractive index to support the microfibre, which also forms a fluidic channel coil. The MXene dispersion was injected into the channel to allow the deposition of an MXene layer using a photodeposition process. The transmission spectra were tuned using a tunable laser with a centre wavelength of 1550 nm and the light-matter interaction resulting from the photo-thermal effect and MXene absorption provide the all-optical modulation in this …

Differentially Private Fractional Frequency Moments Estimation With Polylogarithmic Space, Lun Wang, Iosif Pinelis, Dawn Song

Michigan Tech Publications, Part 1

We prove that Fp sketch, a well-celebrated streaming algorithm for frequency moments estimation, is differentially private as is when p ∈ (0, 1]. Fp sketch uses only polylogarithmic space, exponentially better than existing DP baselines and only worse than the optimal non-private baseline by a logarithmic factor. The evaluation shows that Fp sketch can achieve reasonable accuracy with differential privacy guarantee. The evaluation code is included in the supplementary material.

Data Driven Bayesian Network To Predict Critical Alarm, Joseph Mietkiewicz, Anders Madsen Jan 2022

Data Driven Bayesian Network To Predict Critical Alarm, Joseph Mietkiewicz, Anders Madsen

Articles

Modern industrial plants rely on alarm systems to ensure their safe and effective functioning. Alarms give the operator knowledge about the current state of the industrial plants. Trip alarms indicating a trip event indicate the shutdown of systems. Trip events in power plants can be costly and critical for the running of the operation. This paper demonstrates how trips events based on an alarm log from an offshore gas production can be reliably predicted using a Bayesian network. If a trip event is reliably predicted and the main cause of it is identified, it will allow the operator to prevent it. …

Improvement Of The Fine Tuning Algorithm, Joseph Mietkiewicz, Anders Madsen Jan 2022

Improvement Of The Fine Tuning Algorithm, Joseph Mietkiewicz, Anders Madsen

Articles

Khalil El Hindi has developed a fine-tuning algorithm to
improve the classification accuracy of the Naive Bayes. His algorithm optimizes the conditional probability tables of the Naive Bayes after the
training phase. The values of the probabilities of a variable are modified if it causes misclassification of a training instance. The algorithm out-performs in many cases the Naive Bayes. We analyze the performance
of the algorithm, discussed its issues, and compare it to a modified algorithm. The new algorithm simplifies the formula used in the fine-tuning algorithm and uses a more efficient scoring metric, the Brier score, to
fine-tune the …

Corner’S Theorem On Modules With Anti-Isomorphic Endomorphism Algebras, Brendan Goldsmith, Noel White Jan 2022

Corner’S Theorem On Modules With Anti-Isomorphic Endomorphism Algebras, Brendan Goldsmith, Noel White

Articles

We present a version of an unpublished result of A.L.S. Corner on p-adic modules with anti-isomorphic endomorphism algebras. The result gives a complete description of necessary conditions for two such modules to have anti-isomorphic endomorphism algebras and a sufficient condition is also given. A main difference in the current version is that extensive use is made of our ability to describe certain homomorphism groups.

Viscoelastic And Electromagnetic Materials With Nonlinear Memory, Claudio Giorgi, John Murrough Golden Jan 2022

Viscoelastic And Electromagnetic Materials With Nonlinear Memory, Claudio Giorgi, John Murrough Golden

Articles

A method is presented for generating free energies relating to nonlinear constitutive equations with memory from known free energies associated with hereditary linear theories. Some applications to viscoelastic solids and hereditary electrical conductors are presented. These new free energies are then used to obtain estimates for nonlinear integro-differential evolution problems describing the behavior of nonlinear plasmas with memory.

Reference-Free Differential Histogram-Correlative Detection Of Steganography: Performance Analysis, Natiq M. Abdali, Zahir M. Hussain

Research outputs 2022 to 2026

Recent research has demonstrated the effectiveness of utilizing neural networks for detect tampering in images. However, because accessing a database is complex, which is needed in the classification process to detect tampering, reference-free steganalysis attracted attention. In recent work, an approach for least significant bit (LSB) steganalysis has been presented based on analyzing the derivatives of the histogram correlation. In this paper, we further examine this strategy for other steganographic methods. Detecting image tampering in the spatial domain, such as image steganography. It is found that the above approach could be applied successfully to other kinds of steganography with different …

The Locus Algorithm: A Novel Technique For Identifying Optimised Pointings For Differential Photometry, Oisin Creaner, Kevin Nolan Mr, E. Hickey, N. Smith

Articles

Studies of the photometric variability of astronomical sources from ground-based telescopes must overcome atmospheric extinction effects. Differential photometry by reference to an ensemble of reference stars which closely match the target in terms of magnitude and colour can mitigate these effects. This Paper describes the design, implementation, and operation of a novel algorithm – The Locus Algorithm – which enables optimised differential photometry. The Algorithm is intended to identify, for a given target and observational parameters, the Field of View (FoV) which includes the target and the maximum number of reference stars similar to the target. A collection of objects …

Detecting Road Intersections Automatically From Satellite Images Using A Deep Learning Approach, Fatmaelzahraa Eltaher Ph.D, Luis Miralles-Pechuán, Jane Courtney, Susan Mckeever

Datasets

Automatic detection of road intersections is an important task in various domains such as navigation, route planning, traffic prediction, and road network extraction. Road intersections range from simple three-way T-junctions (degree 3) to complex large-scale junctions with many branches. The location of intersections and their complexity is an important consideration in route planning, such as the requirement to avoid complex intersections on pedestrian journeys. This is relevant to vulnerable road users such as People with Blindness or Visually Impairment (PBVI) or children. Route planning applications, however, do not give information about the location or complexity of intersections as this information …

The 100 M Composite Ship?, Michael John Lowde, Henry George Arthur Peters, Ruadan Geraghty, Jasper Graham-Jones, Richard Pemberton, John Summerscales

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics

Fibre-reinforced polymer (FRP) matrix composites are widely used in large marine struc-tures, and in wind turbines where blade lengths are now over 100 m. Composites are the material of choice for small vessels due to ease of manufacture, high hull girder stiffness, buckling resistance, corrosion resistance and underwater shock resistance. Ships over 100 m are still built using traditional steel and/or aluminium, but so far not FRP. Composite ship lengths have increased over the past 50 years, but fundamental technical challenges remain for the 100 m composite ship. Prelimi-nary studies suggest a possible 30% saving in structural weight, a 7–21% …

Zac: Efficient Zero-Knowledge Dynamic Universal Accumulator And Application To Zero-Knowledge Elementary Database, Hai Van Dang, Tran Viet Xuan Phuong, Thuc D. Nguyen, Thang Hoang

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics

—Zero-knowledge universal accumulator generates the succinct commitment to a set and produces the short (non) membership proof (universal) without leaking information about the set (zero-knowledge). In order to further support a generic set and zero-knowledge, existing techniques generally combine the zero-knowledge universal accumulator with other protocols, such as digital signatures and hashes to primes, which incur high overhead and may not be suitable for real-world use. It is desirable to commit a set of membership concealing the information with the optimal complexity. We devise ZAC, a new zero-knowledge Dynamic Universal Accumulator by taking the existing cryptographic primitives into account to …

Novel Data-Driven Spatial-Spectral Correlated Scheme For Dimensionality Reduction Of Hyperspectral Images, Yanming Zhang, Ping Yuan, Lijun Jiang, Hong Tat Ewe

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Hyperspectral imaging technology has been popularly applied in remote sensing because it collects echoed signals from across the electromagnetic (EM) spectrum and thereby contributes fruitfully spatial-spectral information. However, the processing or storage of high-data-volume hyperspectral images (HSIs), also viewed as snapshots varying with the EM spectrum, burdens the hardware resources, especially for the high spectral resolution and spatial resolution cases. To address this challenge, a novel unsupervised dimensionality reduction method based on the dynamic mode decomposition (DMD) algorithm is proposed to analyze hyperspectral data. This method decomposes the spatial-spectral HSIs in terms of spatial dynamic modes and corresponding spectral patterns. …

Dc Ir-Drop Analysis Of Power Distribution Networks By A Robin Transmission Condition-Enhanced Discontinuous Galerkin Method, An Fa Yang, Min Tang, Jun Fa Mao, Li (Lijun) Jun Jiang, Hakan Bagcii, Ping Li

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

In this work, a novel Robin transmission condition (RTC)-enhanced discontinuous Galerkin (DG) method is proposed for the dc IR-drop analysis of power distribution networks with Joule heating effects included. Unlike the conventional DG method, the proposed DG method straightforwardly applied to discretize the second-order spatial partial differential governing equations for the electrostatic potential $\Phi $ and the steady-state temperature $T$. The numerical flux in DG used to facilitate the information exchange among neighboring subdomains introduces two additional variables: the current density $J$ for the electrical potential equation and the thermal flux $q$ for the thermal equation. To solve them, at …

Juggling A Devil-Stick: Hybrid Orbit Stabilization Using The Impulse Controlled Poincaré Map, Nilay Kant, Ranjan Mukherjee Jan 2022

Juggling A Devil-Stick: Hybrid Orbit Stabilization Using The Impulse Controlled Poincaré Map, Nilay Kant, Ranjan Mukherjee

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The control design for juggling a devil-stick between two symmetric configurations is proposed. Impulsive forces are applied to the devil-stick at the two configurations; and impulse of the force and its point of application are modeled as the control inputs. The dynamics of the devil-stick is described by a single return Poincaré map, and it is shown that the control objective of juggling can be achieved by stabilizing a hybrid orbit. The impulse controlled Poincaré map (ICPM) approach, recently proposed for stabilization of continuous-time orbits of underactuated systems, is extended to achieve asymptotic stabilization of the hybrid orbit. The applicability …

Feature Learning For Optimal Control With B-Spline Representations, Vinay Kenny, Sixiong You, Chaoying Pei, Ran Dai

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The paper develops a feature learning-based method to solve optimal control problems using B-splines to approximate the optimal solutions. The feature learning-based optimal control method can quickly generate near-optimal trajectories for general optimal control problems subject to system dynamics and constraints. The steps in the proposed method are as follows: Firstly, by representing the state and control variables with B-spline functions, the optimal control problem is converted into an approximate nonlinear programming (NLP) problem, where parameters of the B-splines are identified as features of the optimal solution. Secondly, for a specific problem with designated inputs, a dataset of the optimal …

Mind The Gap: Reimagining An Interactive Programming Course For The Synchronous Hybrid Classroom, Christopher M. Poskitt, Kyong Jin Shim, Yi Meng Lau, Hong Seng Ong

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

COVID-19 has significantly affected universities, forcing many courses to be delivered entirely online. As countries bring the pandemic under control, a potential way to safely resume some face-to-face teaching is the synchronous hybrid classroom, in which physically and remotely attending students are taught simultaneously. This comes with challenges, however, including the risk that remotely attending students perceive a ‘gap’ between their engagement and that of their physical peers. In this experience report, we describe how an interactive programming course was adapted to hybrid delivery in a way that mitigated this risk. Our solution centred on the use of a professional …
