Optimization-Based Approaches To Low-Coherence Optical Diffraction Tomography, Seth Smith-Dryden Jan 2022

Optimization-Based Approaches To Low-Coherence Optical Diffraction Tomography, Seth Smith-Dryden

Electronic Theses and Dissertations, 2020-2023

Quantitative optical phase imaging techniques, such as optical diffraction tomography (ODT), are useful tools for refractive-index profiling. Many of them, however, rely on the weak-scattering assumptions, thus cannot be applied to multiple-scattering objects, or turbid media. In this thesis, I report several approaches for expanding the efficacy of ODT techniques and adapting them to new applications by use of low-coherence broadband illumination. First, I developed a method for ODT reconstruction using regularized convex optimization with a new phase-based fidelity criterion. The new criterion is necessary because objects with very different refractive-index distributions may produce similar diffracted fields (magnitude and principal-phase) …

The Fine Spectral Tuning Of Plasmon Mode And Quantum Emitter Coupling And Itscomparison With The Dark-Hot Resonances, Hira Asif, Rasi̇m Volga Ovali, Ramazan Şahi̇n Jan 2022

The Fine Spectral Tuning Of Plasmon Mode And Quantum Emitter Coupling And Itscomparison With The Dark-Hot Resonances, Hira Asif, Rasi̇m Volga Ovali, Ramazan Şahi̇n

Turkish Journal of Physics

Localization of incident fields into very small volumes (hot-spots) allows strong light-matter interactions at the hot spots. This makes path interference effects, Fano resonances, visible. Fano resonances can appear due to the coupling of a bright plasmon (i) to a longer lifetime dark plasmon mode or (ii) to a quantum object (QO) of a much longer lifetime. The second phenomenon provides a very important utility: the voltage tunability of the linear/nonlinear response. The level-spacing of the QO, such as defect-centers and quantum dots, are voltage-tunable which can make a sharp Fano resonance appear and disappear. Here, we compare the two …

Topical Review: Greybody Factors And Quasinormal Modes For Black Holes Invarious Theories - Fingerprints Of Invisibles, İzzet Sakalli, Sara Kanzi

Turkish Journal of Physics

We give a pedagogical introduction to black holes (BHs) greybody factors (GFs) and quasinormal modes (QNMs) and share the recent developments on those subjects. To this end, we present some particular analytical and approximation techniques for the computations of the GFs and QNMs. We first review the gravitational GFs and show how they are analytically calculated for static and spherically symmetric higher dimensional BHs, consisting the charged BHs and existence of cosmological constant (i.e. de Sitter (dS)/anti-de Sitter (AdS)AdS BHs). The computations performed involve both the low-energy (having real and small frequencies) and the asymptotic (having extremely high frequency of …

Extinction And Growth On An Inhomogeneous Seascape, Tung Tran, Mehran Kardar Jan 2022

Extinction And Growth On An Inhomogeneous Seascape, Tung Tran, Mehran Kardar

Turkish Journal of Physics

The effects of noise and nonuniformity on dynamics of populations are relevant and timely subjects of investigation. One form of variation is the time dependence of the reproduction rate (fitness), referred to as ?seascape? noise; another is time-independent intrinsic dependencies of fitness on location (in the parlance of statistical physics, corresponding to annealed and quenched disorder, respectively). The former was studied recently and demonstrated to lead to novel universality classes for extinction and growth. To reduce the gap between this theoretical model and reality, we develop a new formalism for seascape noise where growth and migration parameters are inhomogeneous. In …

Critical Dynamics In Biological Boolean Networks Follows From Symmetric Response To Input Genes, Hamza Çoban, Alkan Kabakçioğlu Jan 2022

Critical Dynamics In Biological Boolean Networks Follows From Symmetric Response To Input Genes, Hamza Çoban, Alkan Kabakçioğlu

Turkish Journal of Physics

A recent observation on an extensive collection of biological gene regulatory networks suggests that the regulatory dynamics is tuned to remain close to the order-chaos boundary in the Lyapunov sense [1]. We here investigate, from a mathematical perspective, the structural/functional constraints which give rise to such accumulation around criticality in these systems. While the role of canalizing functions in this respect is well established, we find that critical sensitivity to small input variations also follows from an over-abundance of symmetrical inputs, i.e. regulatory genes invoking identical or complementary responses on their common target. A random network ensemble constructed to have …

Dissolution Of Alumina In Cryolite Melts: A Conceptual Dft Study, Ali̇met Sema Özen, Zehra Akdeni̇z Jan 2022

Dissolution Of Alumina In Cryolite Melts: A Conceptual Dft Study, Ali̇met Sema Özen, Zehra Akdeni̇z

Turkish Journal of Physics

Interactions between alumina and cryolite clusters were investigated using chemical reactivity descriptors based on Conceptual DFT such as global hardness, $\eta$, global softness, $S$, fukui functions, $f$, and local softness, $s$. Hard and Soft Acids and Bases (HSAB) Principle was applied for identifying clusters that are most likely to interact with alumina, Al$_2$O$_3$. Local reactivity descriptors were employed to predict the most probable regions of interaction within the cluster.

Improving The Holographic Recording Characteristics Of A Water-Resistant Photosensitive Sol–Gel For Use In Volume Holographic Optical Elements, Brian Rogers, Tatsiana Mikulchyk, Mohamed Oubaha, Dervil Cody, Suzanne Martin, Izabela Naydenova Jan 2022

Improving The Holographic Recording Characteristics Of A Water-Resistant Photosensitive Sol–Gel For Use In Volume Holographic Optical Elements, Brian Rogers, Tatsiana Mikulchyk, Mohamed Oubaha, Dervil Cody, Suzanne Martin, Izabela Naydenova

Articles

Continual improvements to holographic recording materials make the development of volume holographic optical elements increasingly more attainable for applications where highly efficient, lightweight diffractive optical elements can replace conventional optics. A fast-curing, water resistant photosensitive sol–gel capable of volume holographic recording has recently drawn attention for its extreme environmental and physical robustness, in particular its water/moisture and scratch resistance. However, to date, the refractive index modulation has been limited. While water-resistant properties are invaluable in the face of the weathering which many practical systems for outdoor applications will endure, high refractive index modulation is also important in order to facilitate …

Optimized Parameter Of Dissimilar Joining Between Al6061-T6 And Height-Strength Steel With Friction Stir Spot Welding Process (Fssw), Anusak Silachai, Suriya Prasomthong

Journal of Metals, Materials and Minerals

High-strength steel and aluminum alloys are used to manufacture modern vehicles. The objective was to reduce the weight and fuel consumption of the vehicles. In this study the optimum parameters for the friction stir spot welding (FSSW) process between Al6061-T6 aluminum alloy and HSS590 high-strength steel were determined. Response surface methodology based on central composite design (CCD) with three parameters, five levels, and 19 runs was used to conduct experiments and develop mathematical regression models. The three joint parameters were tool speed, welding feed, and dwell time. Analysis of variance was then performed to examine the adequacy of the developed …

Mineralogical Studies And Optimization Of Tabling Parameters Of Low Grade Chromite Ore By Box Behnken Design Of Experiments, Amit Kumar Bhandary, Siddhartha Mukherjee, Rajib Dey, Mahua Ghosh Chaudhuri

Journal of Metals, Materials and Minerals

Chromite ore is geologically associated with gangue materials which have lower density compared to pure chromite (FeO.Cr2O3). Gravity separation techniques are very suitable for beneficiation of low grade chromite ore. In the present study mineralogical analysis of the sample has been carried out by using Wavelength dispersive x-ray fluorescence (WDXRF), X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and Energy dispersive X-ray (EDX). The beneficiation of low grade (Cr2O3% 26.88) chromite ore has been investigated using wilfley table. Optimization has been carried out using box-behnken statistical design (BBD). The experimental parameters selected are: tilt angle, water flow rate and pre-heat …

Coral reefs have been detrimentally impacted causing health issues due to elevated ocean temperatures as a result of increased greenhouse gases. Extreme temperatures have also exacerbated coral diseases in tropical reef environments. Numerous studies have outlined the impacts of thermal stress and disease on coral organisms, as well as understanding the influence of site-based characteristics on coral physiology. However, few have discussed the interaction of all three. Laboratory out-planting restoration projects have been of importance throughout impacted areas such as the Caribbean and southern Florida in order to increase coral cover in these areas. This study analyzes photosynthetic efficiency of …

The Law And Economics Of Behavioral Regulation, Avishalom Tor Jan 2022

The Law And Economics Of Behavioral Regulation, Avishalom Tor

Journal Articles

This article examines the law and economics of behavioral regulation (“nudging”), which governments and organizations increasingly use to substitute for and complement traditional instruments. To advance its welfare-based assessment, Section 1 examines alternative nudging definitions and Section 2 considers competing nudges taxonomies. Section 3 describes the benefits of nudges and their regulatory appeal, while Section 4 considers their myriad costs—most notably the private costs they generate for their targets and other market participants. Section 5 then illustrates the assessment of public and private welfare nudges using cost-benefit analysis, cost-effectiveness analysis, and rationality-effects analysis.

Faith In Elections, Derek T. Muller Jan 2022

Faith In Elections, Derek T. Muller

Journal Articles

Americans may be suffering a crisis of faith. But not necessarily a crisis of religious faith. Instead, it is a crisis of faith in elections.

This language of faith in elections—do we have faith, are we losing faith, can we restore faith—pervades our political discourse and suggests religious imagery. Examples only scratch the surface of the language of faith in elections, democracy, and the American ideal. The language is seemingly everywhere. Words, of course, take on different meanings in different contexts. But the choice to use the word faith does appear to deliberately invoke religious imagery. Words like trust, confidence, …

Race-Aware Algorithms: Fairness, Nondiscrimination And Affirmative Action, Pauline T. Kim Jan 2022

Race-Aware Algorithms: Fairness, Nondiscrimination And Affirmative Action, Pauline T. Kim

Scholarship@WashULaw

The growing use of predictive algorithms is increasing concerns that they may discriminate, but mitigating or removing bias requires designers to be aware of protected characteristics and take them into account. If they do so, however, will those efforts be considered a form of discrimination? Put concretely, if model-builders take race into account to prevent racial bias against Black people, have they then engaged in discrimination against white people? Some scholars assume so and seek to justify those practices under existing affirmative action doctrine. By invoking the Court’s affirmative action jurisprudence, however, they implicitly assume that these practices entail discrimination …

Deregulated Redistricting, Travis Crum Jan 2022

Deregulated Redistricting, Travis Crum

Scholarship@WashULaw

From the civil rights movement through the Obama administration, each successive redistricting cycle involved ever-greater regulation of the mapmaking process. But in the past decade, the Supreme Court has re-written the ground rules for redistricting. For the first time in fifty years, Southern States will redistrict free of the preclearance process that long protected minorities from having their political power diminished. Political parties can now openly engage in egregious partisan gerrymandering.

The Court has withdrawn from the political thicket on every front except race. In so doing, the Court has engaged in decision-making that is both activist and restrained, but …

The State Of Innovation And Media Viability In East Africa: From Indepth Media House Surveys, Hesbon Hansen Owilla, Rose Kimani, Ann Hollifield, Julia Wegner, Dennis Reineck, Roland Schürhoff

Graduate School of Media and Communications

Media houses globally are grappling with how best to produce quality content while at the same time remaining financially viable in the wake of shrinking revenues, technological disruptions, the emergence of peripheral content creators, competition for advertisement revenues from big tech platforms, the COVID-19 pandemic, and a myriad of other changes in the ecosystem. Despite these challenges, it is in the interest of the public that news media organisations (NMOs) produce quality content and do so in a financially sustainable fashion. Media viability, that is, producing quality journalism in a financially sustainable way, is, therefore, a growing area of focus. …

A Comparison Of Predicted And Observed Ocean Tidal Loading Displacements Around The Puget Sound, Tanessa Caitlyn Morris

Undergraduate Theses, Professional Papers, and Capstone Artifacts

Around coastlines and in shallow oceans, models of ocean tidal loading (OTL) are not highly accurate and can create sources of error in OTL analysis. OTL is tides moving ocean water that cause the surface of Earth to deform. In this study, forward-modelled predictions of OTL are compared to observations from Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) data to explore the elastic deformation response of Earth to OTL around the Puget Sound. Data from 75 stations were processed to yield position estimates at intervals of 5 minutes for a year. The OTL model used for comparison was the FES2014b ocean-tide model …

Stream Recovery Post Channelization: A Case Study Of Low-Gradient Streams In Central Illinois, Usa, Joseph P. Becker, Eric W. Peterson

Faculty Publications - Geography, Geology, and the Environment

Stream channelization, which entails reducing the sinuosity of a stream, widening, and in some cases deepening the stream channel, is a widespread practice in agricultural regions. Channelization efforts in central Illinois have significant impacts on the geomorphology, flow regime, and sediment transport both in and adjacent to modified reaches. The goal of this study was to characterize the changes in stream channels by comparing three streams that are at various stages of recovery post channelization, 5 years (1900N), 7 years (Frog), and 35 years (Bray), to an unmodified stream reach (Crooked) and estimate a recovery rate. Measured channel slopes within …

Devonian Upper Ocean Redox Trends Across Laurussia: Testing Potential Influences Of Marine Carbonate Lithology On Bulk Rock I/Ca Signals, Ruliang He, Maya Elrick, James Day, Wanyi Lu, Zunli Lu

Faculty Publications - Geography, Geology, and the Environment

The Devonian is characterized by major changes in ocean-atmosphere O2 concentrations, colonialization of continents by plants and animals, and widespread marine anoxic events associated with rapid d13C excursions and biotic crises. However, the long-term upper ocean redox trend for the Devonian is still not well understood. This study presents new I/Ca data from well-dated Lower Devonian through Upper Devonian limestone sections from the Great Basin (western Laurussia) and the Illinois Basin (central Laurussia). In addition, to better address potential influences of lithology and stratigraphy on I/Ca redox signals, I/Ca data are reported here as carbonate lithology-specific. Results indicate that lithologic …

Extremophilic Fungi From Marine Environments: Underexplored Sources Of Antitumor, Anti-Infective And Other Biologically Active Agents, Lesley Ann Giddings, David J. Newman

Chemistry: Faculty Publications

Marine environments are underexplored terrains containing fungi that produce a diversity of natural products given unique environmental pressures and nutrients. While bacteria are commonly the most studied microorganism for natural products in the marine world, marine fungi are also abundant but remain an untapped source of bioactive metabolites. Given that their terrestrial counterparts have been a source of many blockbuster antitumor agents and anti-infectives, including camptothecin, the penicillins, and cyclosporin A, marine fungi also have the potential to produce new chemical scaffolds as leads to potential drugs. Fungi are more phylogenetically diverse than bacteria and have larger genomes that contain …

Weekly pre-class asynchronous assignments included the use of educational technology tools such as an interactive e-textbook site, Perusall, and online academic activities such as Khan Academy to strengthen their content knowledge. This allowed more time for a student-centered approach during synchronous instruction to incorporate tools such as Nearpod, Pear Deck, Flipgrid and digital badges to strength-en their motivation and engagement. Data were collected through a post-course survey; results …

Connecting School Finance Policy With Practice: A Site-Based Expenditure Report Study, Julia Chapdelaine Pontarelli Jan 2022

Connecting School Finance Policy With Practice: A Site-Based Expenditure Report Study, Julia Chapdelaine Pontarelli

Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations

This dissertation examines the policy requirement of site-based expenditure reporting which is a requirement of the newest reauthorization of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act of 1965, the Every Student Succeeds Act. For the first time, the federal government has required school districts to report site-level expenditure data publicly. In Illinois, the tool used to meet this federal reporting requirement is Site-Based Expenditure Reporting. In this study, I focus on how school finance leaders understand, process, and implement the site-based expenditure reporting requirement while considering concepts of equity and adequacy. Sensemaking theory offers a helpful conceptual lens for understanding how …

Early Night Fog Prediction Using Liquid Water Content Measurement In The Monterey Bay Area, Steven B. Kim, Conor Rickard, Julio Hernandez-Vazquez, Daniel Fernandez

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Publications and Presentations

Fog is challenging to predict, and the accuracy of fog prediction may depend on location and time of day. Furthermore, accurate detection of fog is difficult, since, historically, it is often carried out based on visual observations which can be biased and are often not very frequent. Furthermore, visual observations are more challenging to make during the night. To overcome these limitations, we detected fog using FM-120 instruments, which continuously measured liquid water content in the air in the Monterey, California (USA), area. We used and compared the prediction performance of logistic regression (LR) and random forest (RF) models each …

A Potential Relationship Between Soil Disinfestation Efficacy And Leaf Green Reflectance, Steven B. Kim, Steven A. Fennimore, Dong Sub Kim Jan 2022

A Potential Relationship Between Soil Disinfestation Efficacy And Leaf Green Reflectance, Steven B. Kim, Steven A. Fennimore, Dong Sub Kim

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Publications and Presentations

Soil disinfestation with steam was evaluated as an alternative to fumigation. Following soil disinfestation, plant health has traditionally been measured using plant size and yield. Plant health can be measured in a timely manner more efficiently, more easily and non-destructively using image analysis. We hypothesized that plant health could be quantified and treatments can be differentiated using an RGB (Red, Green, Blue) image analysis program, particularly by observing the greenness of plant leaves. However, plant size or the proportion of green area could be unreliable due to plant loss and camera’s position and angle. To this end, we decided to …
