Gender-Specific Experiences Of Women Undergraduate Stem Students In Online Mathematics Courses During A Pandemic, Erika R. Fiore Jan 2022

Gender-Specific Experiences Of Women Undergraduate Stem Students In Online Mathematics Courses During A Pandemic, Erika R. Fiore

Open Access Dissertations

Introductory college math courses have proven to be a significant barrier to degree completion for students in STEM. In particular, research shows women are more likely to leave STEM fields after failing a math course than their male peers. Because of the Covid-19 pandemic beginning in March of 2020, most students and instructors across the globe were forced to learn and teach in an online format. Many of these students and instructors were dissatisfied with their online experience, while others began to realize the opportunities that online learning has to offer, especially for some marginalized populations. This phenomenological dissertation investigates …

There has been a rise in the number of works focused on understanding different team dynamics through a variety of methods, such as psychometrics and physiological measures. Of these methods, one that has been used the longest and is among the least invasive is the use of …

Detecting Slow Slip Events From Seafloor Pressure Data Using Machine Learning, Bing He Jan 2022

Detecting Slow Slip Events From Seafloor Pressure Data Using Machine Learning, Bing He

Open Access Dissertations

Largest earthquakes with destructive tsunamic waves mostly occurred in the offshore subduction zone, causing massive fatalities and significant property losses. Due to the limitations of the seafloor geodesy, it is hard to know the stress status offshore, like the terrestrial geodesy. The shallow slow slip event (SSE) occurrence provides an approach to studying the shallow subduction zone stress status and investigating the area and size of the potential large earthquake and following tsunamis. SSE is a bridge linking the slip rates from aseismic creeping near the trench to the highly locked region in the seismogenic zone. Seafloor pressure measurement, as …

Multiscale Simulation And Machine Learning-Assisted Performance Prediction For Cementitious Composites, Gideon Arthur Lyngdoh Jan 2022

Multiscale Simulation And Machine Learning-Assisted Performance Prediction For Cementitious Composites, Gideon Arthur Lyngdoh

Open Access Dissertations

Concrete is the most widely used construction material in the world for building infrastructures, bridges, and tunnels. However, cement production contributes to 5-7% of the global CO_2 emissions, and thus, there is a significant need for innovative sustainable alternatives without compromising on the mechanical properties. Most of the approaches to address these concerns so far rely on the trial and error-based experimental response. Hence, robust multiscale simulation-based design approaches are needed to be developed for fundamental understanding as well as the comprehensive design of these new sustainable innovative materials. However, performing the simulations with millions of degrees of freedom could …

What Is Classical Education? Using Curriculum Theory To Define A Classical Approach To K-12 Schooling, Jessica Lynne Richardi Jan 2022

What Is Classical Education? Using Curriculum Theory To Define A Classical Approach To K-12 Schooling, Jessica Lynne Richardi

Open Access Dissertations

Results indicate that classical schools tend to value and emphasize coredisciplines such as English Language Arts and mathematics as well as Latin. Nearly half the schools in the study reported use of the Core Knowledge Sequence to deliver core content. Curricular goals and overall purpose appear to vary by school, but classical schools across the affiliation groups in this study prioritize character formation, articulate expression, and a disposition toward truth, goodness, and beauty. Approximately half of the classical schools in the sample report use of the trivium to and consider it a model for cognitive development. An emphasis on learning …

An Assessment Of Geographic And Taxonomic Biases In Research On Climate Change-Related Range Shifts, Evan J. Parker Jan 2022

An Assessment Of Geographic And Taxonomic Biases In Research On Climate Change-Related Range Shifts, Evan J. Parker

Library Map Prize

Geographic and taxonomic biases in ecological literature inhibit the ability of research to be generalized or translated to other systems. This is particularly true with research on climate change-related range shifts, where a diverse and representative set of observations is needed to understand the significant heterogeneity of range shifts and improve models. A literature review was conducted and biases were assessed by examining the geographic location of study areas, the taxonomic makeup of study species, and the location of study areas within species ranges. A substantial geographic skew towards terrestrial, mid-latitude North America and Europe was observed. However, taxonomic coverage …

Jacobi's Four Squares Theorem, Arman Yagci

Honors Papers

Jacobi’s Four Squares Theorem is a celebrated result of number theory that provides a formula for the number of ways a positive integer n can be written as a sum of four integral squares. In this paper, we prove this theorem using the theory of modular forms.

Contractible 4-Manifolds, Alexandra Du Jan 2022

Contractible 4-Manifolds, Alexandra Du

Honors Papers

Compact, contractible 4-manifolds distinct from D^4 were first constructed by Mazur and Poénaru. Sparks defined a collection of compact, contractible 4-manifolds called Jester manifolds. We study Mazur and Jester 4-manifolds. In particular, we show that all Jester manifolds are not homeomorphic to D^4, and that a collection of them are pairwise nonhomeomorphic.

Characterizing Agn Influence On The Calculated Metallicities Of Adjacent Star-Forming Spaxels, Aidan Khelil Jan 2022

Characterizing Agn Influence On The Calculated Metallicities Of Adjacent Star-Forming Spaxels, Aidan Khelil

Honors Papers

In this thesis, I introduce a method to identify and characterize the effects of active galactic nuclei (AGN) on the spectra of nearby star-forming regions. I analyze spatially-resolved areas of galaxies called “spaxels” within Data Release 15 of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) with the goal of locating those which are physically close to AGN. I find those spaxels with calculated metallicities which lie adjacent to AGN-flagged spaxels and characterize their metallicity values relative to the spaxels which are not adjacent to AGN-flagged spaxels, using a total of 11 separate metallicity calibrations. I find that the current methods to …

Electronic Theses and Dissertations, 2020-2023

The objective of the thesis is to understand the factors affecting spatiotemporal ridehailing demand patterns as the COVID-19 pandemic has evolved. Specifically, the current study examines the key contributing factors of weekly ridehailing demand by employing Taxi and Transportation Network Companies (TNC) trip data from January 2019 through December 2020 for New York City. The ridehailing demand is partitioned across four time periods including Morning Peak, Morning Off Peak, Evening Peak and Evening Off Peak to accommodate for the time-of-day specific variations. Drawing on the high-resolution NYC data, the current study developed pooled spatial panel models to accommodate for the …

Swimmers’ Biceps And Triceps Brachii Activation And Elbow Angle In Swimmers With And Without Shoulder Pain, Kendra Graham Jan 2022

Swimmers’ Biceps And Triceps Brachii Activation And Elbow Angle In Swimmers With And Without Shoulder Pain, Kendra Graham

Open Access Master's Theses

Background Swimmers, in general are understudied compared to other athletes, therefore, there is especially little investigation regarding the specific causes of shoulder pain in swimmers available (Tovin, 2006a). From existing literature, there are established normal and non-shoulder pain producing muscular activations and upper body kinematics during the freestyle stroke (Pink et al., 1991), however, it is difficult for investigators to make conclusions about the associations between improper freestyle stroke techniques, improper muscular functioning and shoulder pain (Pink & Tibone, 2000). Therefore, the purpose of this study is to assess differences in the coactivation of triceps brachii and biceps brachii, and …

Estimating Transportation Costs And Emissions Of Recyclables In Rhode Island Municipalities Using A Gis, Routing Machine, And Genetic Algorithm, Luke Norman Martin-Jourdenais Jan 2022

Estimating Transportation Costs And Emissions Of Recyclables In Rhode Island Municipalities Using A Gis, Routing Machine, And Genetic Algorithm, Luke Norman Martin-Jourdenais

Open Access Master's Theses

Transportation and logistics of recyclable materials are major cost drivers within recycling systems. In low and medium income countries, the collection costs of municipal solid waste (MSW) respectively can take up to 80-90% and 50-80% of the municipal solid waste management budget. Reducing these costs can significantly improve the viability of recycling systems. A promising approach for cost reduction in this context is improved routing of refuse vehicles, which can be done by developing and using advanced mathematical optimization algorithms and data information systems. Within the optimization research field, vehicle routing is addressed within the capacitated vehicle routing problem (CVRP). …

Bulk Recycling: Density Separation Models For Mixed Plastic Waste, Megan Lee St. Hilaire Jan 2022

Bulk Recycling: Density Separation Models For Mixed Plastic Waste, Megan Lee St. Hilaire

Open Access Master's Theses

Microplastic pollution is now everywhere, from the highest elevation of Mount Everest to the deepest dives of the Mariana Trench. The use of synthetic polymers has contributed to the transformation of our modern world. Nonetheless, the growing presence of plastics in the natural environment constitutes a sense of urgency to develop sustainable solutions to address the global plastic pollution crisis. Approximately 80 percent of all the plastics ever produced have been discarded. Our relationship with plastic needs rethinking.

Achieving a circular economy requires a holistic approach to redesign the systems that make, use and reuse plastics. Evaluating the life cycle …

Numerical Analysis Of Thermal Distributions And Localized Melting In Solids, Wilhelm Unkelbach Jan 2022

Numerical Analysis Of Thermal Distributions And Localized Melting In Solids, Wilhelm Unkelbach

Open Access Master's Theses

Analytic solutions for heat transfer problems are limited to simple geometries and boundary conditions. This thesis aims to investigate numerical methods for solving transient heat transfer problems, with particular emphasis on problems involving localized heating that can lead to phase change. Such problems are of increasing importance in modelling additive manufacturing processes. Heat transfer is present in most engineering applications. Complex problems require numerical solutions which involve complex geometries, non-uniform boundary conditions and transient temperature history. For such problems, finite difference and finite element solution techniques have been developed. This thesis introduces the basic numerical models for finite difference and …

Distal Urogenital Anatomy In The Male Wood Frog, Lithobates Sylvaticus (Anura: Ranidae), Stanley E. Trauth

Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science

I investigated the microanatomy of the distal urogenital system of the male Wood Frog (Lithobates sylvaticus) from a small sample (n = 6) collected in northern Arkansas in February 2020. Specifically, my primary objectives were as follows: 1) to focus on the histology of the paired Wolffian (urogenital) ducts caudally from the kidneys to their merging with the urodeum of the cloaca, 2) to reveal the structure of the paired seminal vesicles (sperm storage structures), and 3) to compare epithelial morphologies between the distal urogenital tract and its neighboring distal alimentary tract. This information will promote a clearer …

Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science

Switchgrass (Panicum virgatum) is a common forage plant that grows over much of the United States. It has drawn interest as a possible feedstock for biofuels, is used as forage for livestock, is planted for soil conservation, and is a component of the diet of some species of wildlife. We analyzed the energy content of seeds of switchgrass obtained from the crops of mourning doves (Zenaida macroura) collected from plains-mesa sand-scrub in Lea and Eddy counties, New Mexico. Seeds were removed from crops and dried for 48 hours at 60°C to remove moisture and standardize masses. …

A Lightweight Reliably Quantified Deepfake Detection Approach, Tianyi Wang, Kam Pui Chow Jan 2022

A Lightweight Reliably Quantified Deepfake Detection Approach, Tianyi Wang, Kam Pui Chow

Annual ADFSL Conference on Digital Forensics, Security and Law

Deepfake has brought huge threats to society such that everyone can become a potential victim. Current Deepfake detection approaches have unsatisfactory performance in either accuracy or efficiency. Meanwhile, most models are only evaluated on different benchmark test datasets with different accuracies, which could not imitate the real-life Deepfake unknown population. As Deepfake cases have already been raised and brought challenges at the court, it is disappointed that no existing work has studied the model reliability and attempted to make the detection model act as the evidence at the court. We propose a lightweight Deepfake detection deep learning approach using the …

First Passage Analysis In A Queue With State Dependent Vacations, Jewgeni H. Dshalalow, Ryan T. White Jan 2022

First Passage Analysis In A Queue With State Dependent Vacations, Jewgeni H. Dshalalow, Ryan T. White

Mathematics and System Engineering Faculty Publications

This paper deals with a single-server queue where the server goes on maintenance when the queue is exhausted. Initially, the maintenance time is fixed by deterministic or random number T. However, during server’s absence, customers are screened by a dispatcher who estimates his service times based on his needs. According to these estimates, the dispatcher shortens server’s maintenance time and as the result the server returns earlier than planned. Upon server’s return, if there are not enough customers waiting (under the N-Policy), the server rests and then resumes his service. At first, the input and service are general. We then …

Resistance Is Not Futile: Challenging Aapi Hate, Peter H. Huang Jan 2022

Resistance Is Not Futile: Challenging Aapi Hate, Peter H. Huang

Publications

This Article analyzes how to challenge AAPI (Asian American Pacific Islander) hate—defined as explicit negative bias in racial beliefs towards AAPIs. In economics, beliefs are subjective probabilities over possible outcomes. Traditional neoclassical economics view beliefs as inputs to making decisions with more accurate beliefs having indirect, instrumental value by improving decision-making. This Article utilizes novel economic theories about belief-based utility, which economically captures the intuitive notion that people can derive pleasure and pain directly from their and other people's beliefs. Even false beliefs can offer comfort and reassurance to people. This Article also draws on interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary theories about …
