Engineering and Technology Management Student Projects

Technology offers significant advantages in improving the delivery of healthcare to patients. The technology creates electronic data associated with each patient. The data journey starts from the collection point, through the data warehouses that store the data, the application that processes the data, and the medium that transfers the data throughout the patient's life. Data collection starts with patients filling out web forms on a provider's website. This information is stored for the Healthcare organization in remote servers managed by developers and is shared with healthcare specialists, hospitals, labs, pharmacists, insurance providers, and billing software among many other healthcare workers. …

The Modern Origins And Evolution Of The North Carolina Political Question Doctrine, William C. Mckinney Jan 2022

The Modern Origins And Evolution Of The North Carolina Political Question Doctrine, William C. Mckinney

Campbell Law Review

This Article explores the development of the political question doctrine in North Carolina jurisprudence. The Article describes the federal origins of the doctrine and charts its adoption in North Carolina, first through the litigation of fundamental rights cases and later in separation of powers matters. The political question doctrine is a prudential doctrine exercised by courts that serves as a bar to relief on matters where the coordinate political branches of government—the executive and legislative—may have primacy. This Article concludes that the doctrine has been narrowed over time in North Carolina, though it may still be utilized in certain instances.

Dark Mode Vogue: Do Light-On-Dark Displays Have Measurable Benefits To Users?, Tara Sethi Jan 2022

Dark Mode Vogue: Do Light-On-Dark Displays Have Measurable Benefits To Users?, Tara Sethi

Theses and Dissertations - All Years

In recent years, dark mode displays have become a popular user interface design trend. Major software providers have promised several benefits to using dark mode (negative polarity) displays. However, most of the prior research showed that light more (positive polarity) is more beneficial to human performance. In this work, we investigated the effect of display polarity (negative and positive) on cognitive load, subjective mental effort, subjective task difficulty, and emotion to assess whether the popularity of these displays is related to aesthetic qualities or true physiological benefits. As the dark mode trend has been observed mostly in younger populations, two …

The target volatility strategy is a very popular investment concept in financial marketplace. For my dissertation, I focus on studying the target volatility investment concept in application to pension accumulation as well as decumulation stages. Additionally, I extend a basic target volatility strategy by introducing trading boundaries to its asset allocation mechanism. My dissertation study follows a three-paper format.

In paper one, we propose a new pension strategy that aims at improving the protection of a long-term pension plan in volatile market conditions. Over a hypothetical twenty-year pension scheme, we show that our newly proposed strategy, which attaches a target …

On Flow Polytopes, Nu-Associahedra, And The Subdivision Algebra, Matias Von Bell Jan 2022

On Flow Polytopes, Nu-Associahedra, And The Subdivision Algebra, Matias Von Bell

Theses and Dissertations--Mathematics

This dissertation studies the geometry and combinatorics related to a flow polytope Fcar(ν) constructed from a lattice path ν, whose volume is given by the ν-Catalan numbers. It begins with a study of the ν-associahedron introduced by Ceballos, Padrol, and Sarmiento in 2019, but from the perspective of Schröder combinatorics. Some classical results for Schröder paths are extended to the ν-setting, and insights into the geometry of the ν-associahedron are obtained by describing its face poset with two ν-Schröder objects. The ν-associahedron is then shown to be dual to a framed triangulation of Fcar(ν), which is a …

Does Cryptocurrency Staking Fall Under Sec Jurisdiction?, Nicholas E. Gonzalez Jan 2022

Does Cryptocurrency Staking Fall Under Sec Jurisdiction?, Nicholas E. Gonzalez

Fordham Journal of Corporate & Financial Law

Bitcoin, the first blockchain and cryptocurrency (crypto), launched in 2009 when the Bitcoin network opened to the public. A blockchain is a digital ledger technology where transactions are aggregated and permanently recorded into blocks of information. Maintenance of a blockchain is typically conducted by decentralized managers who own and operate network computers (“Nodes”) and serve the functions normally handled by central intermediaries to validate and confirm transactions. All Nodes follow a blockchain protocol. In Bitcoin’s and most cryptos’ cases, this protocol is known as a Proof- of-Work protocol which requires a large amount of energy consumption. Consequently, Proof-of-Stake protocols (“PoS”) …

Electron Spin Relaxation Of Nitroxide Spin Labels And Relaxation Processes, Thacien Ngendahimana Jan 2022

Electron Spin Relaxation Of Nitroxide Spin Labels And Relaxation Processes, Thacien Ngendahimana

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

MTSL is the nitroxide spin label that is most commonly used in site-directed spin labeling. However, due to rotation of its gem-dimethyl groups that average anisotropic interactions, Tm becomes short above about 70 K and this makes DEER experiments difficult at these temperatures. Strategies for decreasing spin echo dephasing and electron spin lattice relaxation rates are important for design of nitroxide spin labels and molecular qubits.

In searching for labels with longer Tm, new nitroxide spin labels devoid of gemdimethyl groups or with more rigid structures were synthesized at the University of Nebraska and pulsed EPR measurements …

Longitudinal Modeling Of Early Hiv Burden In The Central Nervous System, Victor Diego Armengol Jan 2022

Longitudinal Modeling Of Early Hiv Burden In The Central Nervous System, Victor Diego Armengol

Yale Medicine Thesis Digital Library

The dynamics of plasma HIV replication during early infection including establishment of a viral set-point are well-known. However, the course of HIV in the central nervous system (CNS) after initial entry of HIV into this compartment is less understood. Using longitudinal samples, we modeled the natural history of HIV RNA in the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) and plasma during early HIV prior to initiation of antiretroviral treatment (ART). Participants with primary HIV infection (PHI, within 12 months of initial infection) were enrolled in prospective studies with paired longitudinal sampling of blood and CSF conducted in San Francisco, USA, and Gothenburg, Sweden …

Biomechanical Properties Of Posterior To Anterior Lag Screw Insertion In Fibular Supination-External Rotation Fractures And Effect Of Engaged Cortical Thickness, Adam Sahlstrom

Yale Medicine Thesis Digital Library

The fracture pattern of supination-external rotation injury of the fibula is often reducible by lag screw fixation. This thesis is designed to evaluate biomechanical differences between lag screws inserted from an anterior to posterior direction and from a posterior to anterior direction and if the thickness of the anterior and posterior fibular cortices were similarly correlated. 5 donor-matched pairs of cadaver fibula were harvested and submitted to material testing following 3.5-mm cortical screw insertion from either an anterior to posterior direction or a posterior to anterior direction and screw insertion torque and axial pullout strength were measured. Computed tomography images …

Segmentation Of The Wassuk Range Normal Fault System, Nevada (Usa): Implications For Earthquake Rupture And Walker Lane Dynamics, Benjamin E. Surpless, Sarah Thorne Jan 2022

Segmentation Of The Wassuk Range Normal Fault System, Nevada (Usa): Implications For Earthquake Rupture And Walker Lane Dynamics, Benjamin E. Surpless, Sarah Thorne

Earth and Environmental Geosciences Faculty Research

Normal faults are commonly segmented along strike, with segments that localize strain and influence propagation of slip during earthquakes. Although geometry of segments can be constrained by fault mapping, it is challenging to determine seismically relevant segments along a fault zone. Because slip histories, geometries, and strength of linkages between normal fault segments fundamentally control the propagation of rupture during earthquakes, and differences in segment slip rates result in differential uplift of adjacent footwalls, we use along‐ strike changes in footwall morphology to detect fault segments and the relative strength of the mechanical links between them.

We apply a new …

An Electrochemical, Fluidic, Chip-Based Biosensor For Biomarker Detection, Lauren Bell Jan 2022

An Electrochemical, Fluidic, Chip-Based Biosensor For Biomarker Detection, Lauren Bell

Theses and Dissertations--Biomedical Engineering

Biosensors and their use in both the research and clinical field for the detection and monitoring of critical biomarkers are prevalent and constantly improving. However, continued research needs to be done to address shortcomings, such as low sensitivity, poor specificity, and poor readiness for integration into research use and patient care. The objective of this research was to create a combined fluidic, chip-based biosensor that could detect different biomarkers with high sensitivity and ease of use. For assessing the developed sensor, three separate biomarkers were tested: glucose, cholesterol, and oxygen. Both the glucose biosensor and cholesterol biosensor were combined with …

Use Of Image Processing Techniques And Machine Learning For Better Understanding Of T Gondii Biology, Amer Asiri Jan 2022

Use Of Image Processing Techniques And Machine Learning For Better Understanding Of T Gondii Biology, Amer Asiri

Theses and Dissertations--Biomedical Engineering

Almost one in every three people worldwide is infected with Toxoplasma gondii (T. gondii). The biology and growth of the parasite’s bradyzoite form in host tissue cysts are not well understood. T. gondii’s metabolic state influences the morphology of its single mitochondrion, which can be visualized using fluorescence microscopy with specific dyes. Hence, fluorescence microscopy images of cysts purified from infected mouse brains carry biological information about bradyzoites, the poorly understood form of the parasite within them. With the help of fluorescence microscopy techniques, previous studies extracted images of the mitochondrion, nucleus, and the inner membrane complex (IMC) …

Sewer Vapor Intrusion Pathway: Simulation Of Indoor Piping Systems And Operation Of Aroma-Voc Gas Analyzer, Hong Cheng Tay Jan 2022

Sewer Vapor Intrusion Pathway: Simulation Of Indoor Piping Systems And Operation Of Aroma-Voc Gas Analyzer, Hong Cheng Tay

Theses and Dissertations--Civil Engineering

Vapor Intrusion (VI) is a transport phenomenon that occurs when contaminants migrate from sub-surface sources into indoor spaces. Sewer tunnels, plumbing connections, and piping infrastructures can be important contributors to an increased potential of VI in a site, which results in indoor concentrations of volatile organic compounds (VOC). In the present work, the topic of sewer VI pathways were investigated through a prototype made from various types of indoor plumbing pipe fittings. This prototype simulates indoor piping systems and determine whether air and VOC were escaping through the pipe fittings. Moreover, this study is the first effort to use a …

A Computational Exploration Of The Scandate Cathode Surface, Shankar Miller-Murthy Jan 2022

A Computational Exploration Of The Scandate Cathode Surface, Shankar Miller-Murthy

Theses and Dissertations--Chemical and Materials Engineering

The exact surface configuration of scandate cathodes has been a point of contention for the materials community for a long time. Without proper understanding of it and the related structures and emission mechanisms, scandate cathodes remain patchy and unreliable emitters. Thus, density functional theory techniques were applied to various potential surface arrangements and found that there are several low-energy surfaces with low work functions that incorporate a scandium interlayer between tungsten and oxygen or otherwise have a scandium-on-tungsten structure. Furthermore, it was discovered that adding a monolayer of scandium directly to a tungsten surface is surprisingly favorable, thermodynamically. While none …

The Performance Optimization Of Asp Solving Based On Encoding Rewriting And Encoding Selection, Liu Liu Jan 2022

The Performance Optimization Of Asp Solving Based On Encoding Rewriting And Encoding Selection, Liu Liu

Theses and Dissertations--Computer Science

Answer set programming (ASP) has long been used for modeling and solving hard search problems. These problems are modeled in ASP as encodings, a collection of rules that declaratively describe the logic of the problem without explicitly listing how to solve it. It is common that the same problem has several different but equivalent encodings in ASP. Experience shows that the performance of these ASP encodings may vary greatly from instance to instance when processed by current state-of-the-art ASP grounder/solver systems. In particular, it is rarely the case that one encoding outperforms all others. Moreover, running an ASP system on …

Don't Give Me That Story! -- A Human-Centered Framework For Usable Narrative Planning, Rachelyn Farrell Jan 2022

Don't Give Me That Story! -- A Human-Centered Framework For Usable Narrative Planning, Rachelyn Farrell

Theses and Dissertations--Computer Science

Interactive or branching stories are engaging and can be embedded into digital systems for a variety of purposes, but their size and complexity makes it difficult and time-consuming for humans to author them. Narrative planning algorithms can automatically generate large branching stories with guaranteed causal consistency, using a hand-authored library of story content pieces. The usability of such a system depends on both the quality of the narrative model upon which it is built and the ability of the user to create the story content library.

Current narrative planning algorithms use either a limited or no model of character belief, …

Distribution Of Particulate Organic Carbon – Fluxes And Inventories – In Growth-Faulted Coastal Wetlands, Samuel Joel Whitehead Jan 2022

Distribution Of Particulate Organic Carbon – Fluxes And Inventories – In Growth-Faulted Coastal Wetlands, Samuel Joel Whitehead

Theses and Dissertations--Earth and Environmental Sciences

Coastal wetlands along the Northern Gulf of Mexico (NGOMx) are critically important but threatened environments which provide significant and diverse economic, social, and environmental value. These environments are essential components to the global carbon cycle, serving as one of the most efficient terrestrial carbon sinks. Since onset of the Industrial Revolution increasing rates of coastal wetland loss have been documented due to a variety of anthropogenic activities, neotectonic processes, subsidence, and rising sea-levels. This research utilized an array of methods and sedimentological analyses to test the hypothesis that growth-fault induced changes at Earth’s surface affects the delivery to, and storage …

The Revised Systematics And Paleoecology Of The Devonian Stemless Crinoid Genus Edriocrinus Hall, 1858, Catherine E. Herbert Jan 2022

The Revised Systematics And Paleoecology Of The Devonian Stemless Crinoid Genus Edriocrinus Hall, 1858, Catherine E. Herbert

Theses and Dissertations--Earth and Environmental Sciences

New morphological observations of Edriocrinus Hall, 1858, enable a modern, holistic view of this unusual crinoid genus, previously included in the Superorder Flexibilia (Zittel, 1895) Wright et al., 2017. Re-analysis of Edriocrinus suggests that the genus should now be assigned to the Order ‘Dendrocrinida’ within the Magnorder Eucladida Wright, 2017 based on the five infrabasals, single radianal in the cup, absent anal sac, and non-pinnulate arms with rectangular uniserial brachials. Moreover, examination of the slight variations separating the current 14 Edriocrinus species indicates that these “species” are likely ecophenotypes. The current Edriocrinus species are revised based on firmly bound calyx …

Naturally Occurring And Introduced Tracers For Examining Water Pathways In Urban Environments, Elizabeth Avery Jan 2022

Naturally Occurring And Introduced Tracers For Examining Water Pathways In Urban Environments, Elizabeth Avery

Theses and Dissertations--Earth and Environmental Sciences

Naturally occurring stable isotopes of water and introduced water tracers allow researchers to examine water pathways and better understand spatial and temporal variability in water sources. Trends in naturally occurring stable isotope values can function not only as a tracer for precipitation patterns and moisture recycling but also as a confirmation of municipal data. Additionally, these data can provide an early signal for the effects of climate change on these sources, reducing uncertainty from physical measurements. To further assess water pathways, introduced tracers can be used to investigate surface and below ground surface flow for streams and rivers.
