A predominantly fish-eating diet was envisioned for the sail-backed theropod dinosaur Spinosaurus aegyptiacus when its elongate jaws with subconical teeth were unearthed a century ago in Egypt. Recent discovery of the high-spined tail of that skeleton, however, led to a bolder conjecture that S. aegyptiacus was the first fully aquatic dinosaur. The "aquatic hypothesis' posits that S. aegyptiacus was a slow quadruped on land but a capable pursuit predator in coastal waters, powered by an expanded tail. We test these functional claims with skeletal and flesh models of S. aegyptiacus. We assembled a CT- based skeletal reconstruction based on the …

Exploring Cathodoluminescence Evident Features Of Tungsten Disulfide, Molybdenum Disulfide, And Tungsten-Sulfide-Selenide, Nathan Mayer
Undergraduate Theses
Cathodoluminescence (CL) microscopy can be used to characterize the quantum optical behaviors of two-dimensional nanostructures. To investigate this behavior, we mounted flakes of tungsten disulfide (WS2), molybdenum disulfide (MoS2), and tungsten-sulfide-selenide Janus structures (WSSe) on a SiO2 substrate and analyzed these samples under both high vacuum and low H2O vacuum conditions using a scanning electron microscope. We then captured CL and secondary-electron images of the samples at multiple electron-beam energies and currents (5 keV to 30 keV, and 0.5 nA to 5 nA, respectively). We used a range of beam currents and …

We also collected information about teacher characteristics, technology use, and teacher attitudes and self-efficacy about writing. On average, teachers reported receiving minimal preparation to teach writing via distance …
From School To Work: Does Vocational Education Improve Labour Market Outcomes? An Empirical Analysis Of Indonesia, Dyah S. Pritadrajati
From School To Work: Does Vocational Education Improve Labour Market Outcomes? An Empirical Analysis Of Indonesia, Dyah S. Pritadrajati
Bulletin of Monetary Economics and Banking
The Indonesian government has been introducing revitalisation programmes for vocational schools, particularly during the period 2007 and 2011. It has targeted 7 out of 10 senior-secondary schools to be vocational schools by 2025 through new establishment or conversion of established general schools into vocational schools. To evaluate the government policy on the expansion of vocational education, this paper analyses the effects of enrolment in vocational senior-secondary schools on four labour market outcomes; namely, labour force participation, risk of unemployment, job formality, and income. Using a rich socioeconomic survey from the Indonesian Family Life Survey, we find that public vocational education …
The Impact Of Switching Schools On College-Going, Anne Walton Garrison
The Impact Of Switching Schools On College-Going, Anne Walton Garrison
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
Large urban school districts, especially those with high concentrations of minority and economically disadvantaged students, have high rates of nonstructural student mobility (nonpromotional school-switching). The students in these school districts tend to be the very ones who stand to benefit the most from college attainment. However, the extent to which nonstructural student mobility impacts students’ likelihood of going to college is not fully known. This quasi-experimental study of a class of high school graduates in one urban district fills a gap in the literature by both examining the effects of switching schools in grades 3–12 on college-going and establishing causality …

The focus on learner-centred learning approaches is a concern which needs to be facilitated as a matter of study. Microlearning has evolved in facilitating learners in short learning activities as viewed through history. This paper aims to review the application of microlearning historically. This narrative study uses deconstruction techniques with a historical research approach consisting of (1) heuristics, (2) verification, (3) interpretation, and (4) historiography. The study found that microlearning is a development of the concepts of microteaching and microcontent. This paper can be used as a reference in the development of microlearning as research and learning in the future.

Biblical Hebrew As A Negative Concord Language, J. Bradley Dukes
Biblical Hebrew As A Negative Concord Language, J. Bradley Dukes
Theses and Dissertations
The typological distinction between negative concord and double negation languages has received increasing attention over the past century beginning with Jespersen (1922). Multiple negation in Biblical Hebrew has been subject to mixed treatment in this regard. Some scholars have treated all multiple negation in Biblical Hebrew as emphatic (Gesenius, Kautzsch & Cowley 1910; Dahood 1975; Holmstedt 2016) while others have labeled these constructions as pleonastic (Jouon & Muraoka 2006). Snyman (2004) determines that Biblical Hebrew is neither a negative concord language nor a double negation language based upon his assessment that "BH does not exhibit multiple negation elements." In this …

Trial By Centipawns: A Comprehensive Analysis Of Defamation Actions In Online Chess & The Probative Value Of Statistical Evidence In Civil Trials, Ryan Thomas Garippo
Richmond Journal of Law & Technology
Truthfully, I did not intend to publish this article at such an opportune time. I have been concerned about defamation in online chess for several years. However, I suspected that it was a dormant problem that would need to be addressed sometime in the undetermined future. I did not suspect that the day would come so soon.

The Impact Of Policy Design On Willingness To Pay For Ecosystem Services From Prairie Strips, Karina Schoengold, Badri Khanal, Taro Mieno, Lisa Schulte Moore
Cornhusker Economics
Ecosystem services from farmland conservation are public good benefits. The value of these benefits is primarily measured using methods that determine the willingness to pay (WTP) for those benefits. Prairie strips, a farmland conservation practice, provide ecosystem services such as improved water quality, soil health, and biodiversity (Schulte et al., 2017). The state of Iowa is a major corn producer and contributes significant amounts of nitrogen and phosphorous to the Gulf of Mexico (Alexander et al., 2008). The development of conventional agricultural systems has also resulted in a significant loss of biodiversity, including a dominant land cover of tallgrass prairie. …

In 2014, the Indonesian Government introduced a social security program in the health sector. However, Indonesia’s out-of-pocket expenses remain high due to a lack of public interest in National Health Insurance services. Financing expensive health services with high out-of-pocket expenses has the potential to cause poverty. Private health insurance is considered a solution to this problem. This study aimed to determine the socioeconomic factors of private health insurance ownership and its potential in Indonesia. This study used secondary data from the 2018, 2019, and 2020 National Socioeconomic Surveys. Logistic regression analysis showed that the variables related to private health insurance …
Bi-Dbar-Approach For A Coupled Shifted Nonlocal Dispersionless System, Junyi Zhu, Kaiwen Shao, Zhijun Qiao
Bi-Dbar-Approach For A Coupled Shifted Nonlocal Dispersionless System, Junyi Zhu, Kaiwen Shao, Zhijun Qiao
School of Mathematical & Statistical Sciences Faculty Publications
We propose a Bi-Dbar approach and apply it to the extended coupled shifted nonlocal dispersionless system. We introduce the nonlocal reduction to solve the coupled shifted nonlocal dispersionless system. Since no enough constraint conditions can be found to curb the norming contants in the Dbar data, the “solutions” obtained by the Dbar dressing method, in general, do not admit the coupled shifted nonlocal dispersionless system. In the Bi-Dbar approach to the extended coupled shifted nonlocal dispersionless system, the norming constants are free. The constraint conditions on the norming constants are determined by the general nonlocal reduction, and the solutions of …

A Pipeline To Generate Deep Learning Surrogates Of Genome-Scale Metabolic Models, Achilles Rasquinha
A Pipeline To Generate Deep Learning Surrogates Of Genome-Scale Metabolic Models, Achilles Rasquinha
School of Computing: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Genome-Scale Metabolic Models (GEMMs) are powerful reconstructions of biological systems that help metabolic engineers understand and predict growth conditions subjected to various environmental factors around the cellular metabolism of an organism in observation, purely in silico. Applications of metabolic engineering range from perturbation analysis and drug-target discovery to predicting growth rates of biotechnologically important metabolites and reaction objectives within dierent single-cell and multi-cellular organism types. GEMMs use mathematical frameworks for quantitative estimations of flux distributions within metabolic networks. The reasons behind why an organism activates, stuns, or fluctuates between alternative pathways for growth and survival, however, remain relatively unknown. GEMMs …

Quantum fluids exhibit quantum mechanical effects at the macroscopic level, which contrast strongly with classical fluids. Gain-dissipative solid-state exciton-polaritons systems are promising emulation platforms for complex quantum fluid studies at elevated temperatures. Recently, halide perovskite polariton systems have emerged as materials with distinctive advantages over other room-temperature systems for future studies of topological physics, non-Abelian gauge fields, and spin-orbit interactions. However, the demonstration of nonlinear quantum hydrodynamics, such as superfluidity and Čerenkov flow, which is a consequence of the renormalized elementary excitation spectrum, remains elusive in halide perovskites. Here, using homogenous halide perovskites single crystals, we report, in both one- …

Aerosols play important roles in modulations of cloud properties and hydrological cycle by decreasing the size of cloud droplets with the increase of aerosols under the condition of fixed liquid water path, which is known as the first aerosol indirect effect or Twomey-effect or microphysical effect. Using high-quality aerosol data from surface observations and statistically decoupling the influence of meteorological factors, we show that highly loaded aerosols can counter this microphysical effect through the radiative effect to result both the decrease and increase of cloud droplet size depending on liquid water path in water clouds. The radiative effect due to …
