The X-Factor Of C-Suite Executives, Sheila T. Tan Jan 2022

The X-Factor Of C-Suite Executives, Sheila T. Tan

Theses and Dissertations

Organizations rely on C-level executives to make strategic decisions that will impact stakeholders and business performance. These executives are judged based on employee satisfaction, market share, and bottom lines. Some of them perform well at one point but eventually make disastrous decisions. There is still a gap in knowledge on what elements make them decide how they do and what can be done before they are installed to the highest post. This paper investigated common mindsets and belief structures, which will be referred to in this paper as the X-factor, of C-level executives based on the Matrix model as a …

Review Of Dandelion, P. The Cultivation Of Conformity: Towards A General Theory Of Internal Secularisation, (Routledge, 2019)., Jon R. Kershner

Quaker Religious Thought

"Ben" Pink Dandelion's book, The Cultivation of Conformity: Towards a General Theory of Internal Secularisation, is a serious examination of religious expression using British Quakerism as a test case. Even for one like me-who is not trained in the methods of the social–scientific study of religion, which the book employs–The Cultivation of Conformity is immensely useful to understand the changing dynamics of Quakerism, and Quakerism’s relationship to culture. Dandelion is a British Quaker and the foremost sociologist of Quakerism. His book builds on decades of research, presents a clear-eyed analysis of Quakerism and advances the study of religion in …

Contract Law’S “Too Good To Be True” Doctrine—Is It?, William A. Drennan Jan 2022

Contract Law’S “Too Good To Be True” Doctrine—Is It?, William A. Drennan

SMU Law Review

In a wonderful variety of emotionally charged contract law opinions, including the cases of the boastful cheater, the opportunistic attorney, and the careless concrete contractor,3 courts unfortunately have used the phrase “too good to be true” as a single-step test to decide enforceability. These cases can generate emotional responses ranging from empathy4 to schadenfreude5 because they involve a mistake with potentially disastrous results for one party (and a windfall for the other side). It is understandable that courts would be drawn to a catchy, down-to-earth phrase to reach a just resolution in these entertaining and memorable cases.

Nevertheless, this Article …

What Have We Learned After One Year Of Remote Teaching And Learning? A Critical Conversation Between Two Language Educators, Marlon Valencia, Miguel Rincón Jan 2022

What Have We Learned After One Year Of Remote Teaching And Learning? A Critical Conversation Between Two Language Educators, Marlon Valencia, Miguel Rincón

Pedagogicon Conference Proceedings

In this critical conversation, two language educators reflect on their experiences of online instruction after nearly two years of teaching during the Covid 19 pandemic. The duoethnographers share the challenges they faced to adapt their teaching and assessment for remote delivery, as well as how their pedagogical orientations transformed to engage with learners online. The discussion focuses on teaching both synchronously and asynchronously, re-thinking language assessment, and the authors’ strategies to manage a sustainable and healthy workflow. This last aspect is of significant importance given how much these two educators had to learn to teach in ways and through media …

A Man That Can Translate And Infinite Goodness: A Response To Recent Reviews, Jonathan E. Neville Jan 2022

A Man That Can Translate And Infinite Goodness: A Response To Recent Reviews, Jonathan E. Neville

Interpreter: A Journal of Latter-day Saint Faith and Scholarship

Since 1829, various theories about the production of the Book of Mormon have been proposed. Modern scholarship has moved away from the idea that Joseph Smith actually translated ancient engravings into English. Two books, A Man That Can Translate and Infinite Goodness, propose a “neo-orthodox” view, offering evidence that Joseph did translate ancient engravings into English. Recent reviews in the Interpreter of these two books significantly misunderstand and misrepresent the argument. T his response corrects some of those misconceptions.

Models Of Motherhood Expansive Mothering In The Old Testament, Avram R. Shannon, Thora Florence Shannon Jan 2022

Models Of Motherhood Expansive Mothering In The Old Testament, Avram R. Shannon, Thora Florence Shannon

Religious Educator: Perspectives on the Restored Gospel

Motherhood, both in the scriptures and in our own experiences, is a wonderful and beautiful thing, but it can sometimes be a fraught category. Societal and religious expectations on mothers can be overwhelming and can lead to despair, difficulty, and marginalization.[1] Motherhood is often defined as a narrow range of nurturing behaviors such as bearing, nursing, feeding, and fulfilling other physical needs of children.[2] Some people have used the Old Testament to proscribe women's roles to motherhood and then to define their roles of motherhood as a limited range of these mostly physical acts of childcare.[3] While these are vitally …

Khirbet Beit Lei And The Lehi Of Samson Old Testament And Book Of Mormon Considerations, And A Newly Identified Site For Biblical Leḥi And En-Hakkore, Jeffrey R. Chadwick

Religious Educator: Perspectives on the Restored Gospel

In the study, appreciation, and teaching of ancient scripture, the disciplines of archaeology, geography, history, and language can often provide helpful and instructive insights for understanding the settings and events of scriptural narratives. The doctrinal and applicative aspects of those narratives may be enhanced by a correct understanding of their ancient backgrounds. But caution must be taken that data and interpretations from these disciplines be used in accurate and responsible ways, and that sensational claims or wishful thinking unsupported by the data not be advanced in our classes nor become part of the teaching experience. A case in point in …

“Holiness To The Lord” And Personal Temple Worship, Gaye Strathearn Jan 2022

“Holiness To The Lord” And Personal Temple Worship, Gaye Strathearn

Religious Educator: Perspectives on the Restored Gospel

Over thirty years ago, I embarked on a three-day excursion into the Sinai Peninsula and the traditional site of Mount Sinai. This mountain is in the middle of a mountainous desert, miles from anywhere. We arrived there in the early evening and had dinner in a Bedouin camp and then bunked down in some tents, waiting for 3:00 a.m. to arrive. That is when we were to make the 2,500-foot ascent, because our leaders said that it would be much too hot if we waited until the sun came up. Somewhere along the line, I ended up being the one …

Remembering Christ's Blood Which Was Shed, Ryder Seamons, John Hilton Iii Jan 2022

Remembering Christ's Blood Which Was Shed, Ryder Seamons, John Hilton Iii

Religious Educator: Perspectives on the Restored Gospel

Each Sunday, as part of one of the most familiar rituals in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, we hear in our sacrament prayers that the broken bread we eat is a symbol of Christ’s body, and the water we drink a symbol of Christ’s “blood . . . , which was shed for [us]” (Doctrine and Covenants 20:79). Most importantly, we are invited to take these emblems “in remembrance” of his body and shed blood, both at that moment and “always.” Integral to the spiritual cleansing we can experience as we take the sacrament is our remembrance …

No “Box To Be Checked”: Environmental Justice In Modern Legal Practice, Clifford J. Villa Jan 2022

No “Box To Be Checked”: Environmental Justice In Modern Legal Practice, Clifford J. Villa

Faculty Scholarship

For nearly thirty years, environmental justice has been part of our civic conversation and included in the mission of federal agencies. But while public attention to environmental justice has waxed and waned over time, environmental justice principles have endured and developed into rules of law. This development may be expected to continue and accelerate with recent events such as the nationwide outcry after the police killing of George Floyd in 2020, the disparate impacts of COVID-19 on people of color, and the express priorities of the Biden administration. This paper seeks to help legal practitioners and other interested parties comprehend …

May Medica: Divine Healing And The Garden In “The Merchants Tale”, Maria Zygogianni Jan 2022

May Medica: Divine Healing And The Garden In “The Merchants Tale”, Maria Zygogianni

Medieval Feminist Forum: A Journal of Gender and Sexuality

The motif of the woman as a healer and/or cure (as a nurse, interceding saint, or beloved lady) occurs across medieval literary genres from romance to hagiography. This article explores the ways in which the character of May in Chaucer’s The Merchant’s Tale reflects and parodies the figure of the female healer. The first section explores the healing women of romance and hagiographic traditions, as well as the frameworks of magic and saintly intervention which underpin them. The second section applies a framework of disability studies to the enfeebled body of May’s husband January, and his attempts to reconstitute his …

Remapping Constitutional Theory, Louis Michael Seidman Jan 2022

Remapping Constitutional Theory, Louis Michael Seidman

Georgetown Law Faculty Publications and Other Works

The time has come for constitutional theory to move beyond the stale argument between originalists and living constitutionalists. The declining significance of that debate provides a motivating backdrop for this Article, but it is not the main point of the discussion. Instead, this Article focuses on the possibility of remapping constitutional disagreement in a fresher, more generative, and more descriptively accurate fashion.

The discussion begins with another familiar dichotomy – the distinction between “judicial activism” and “judicial restraint.” Unfortunately, as employed in popular discussion and in some academic literature, this distinction is also confused and unhelpful. However, we can begin …

Deep Learning-Aided Automated Personal Data Discovery And Profiling, Apdullah Yayik, Vedat Aybar, Hasan Hüseyi̇n Apik, Sevcan İçöz, Beki̇r Bakar, Tunga Güngör

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

In Turkey, Turkish Personal Data Protection Rule (PDPR) No. 6698, in force since 2016, provides protection to citizens for the legal existence of their personal data. Although the law provides excellent guidance, companies currently face challenges in complying with its regulations in terms of storing, sharing, or monitoring personal data. Since any specially designed software with wide industrial usage is not on the market, almost all of the companies have no other choice but to take expensive and error-prone operations manually to ensure their compliance. In this paper, we present an automated solution to facilitate and accelerate PDPR compliance. In …

Understanding Joseph Smith's Translation Of The Bible By Kent P. Jackson, Kerry Muhlestein Jan 2022

Understanding Joseph Smith's Translation Of The Bible By Kent P. Jackson, Kerry Muhlestein

BYU Studies

Kent Jackson has spent about three decades studying Joseph Smith’s translation of the Bible and has put all that research together in a masterful volume that is informative yet not overwhelming for the nonacademic. While there are a few minor things that could have been done differently, this book, combined with Jackson’s recent Joseph Smith’s Translation of the Bible: The Joseph Smith Translation and the King James Translation in Parallel Columns (Provo, Utah: Religious Studies Center, Brigham Young University; Salt Lake City: Deseret Book, 2021), have made it possible for us to better use and understand Joseph Smith’s translation than …

Liahona: “Prepared Of The Lord, A Compass", Calvin D. Tolman Jan 2022

Liahona: “Prepared Of The Lord, A Compass", Calvin D. Tolman

Interpreter: A Journal of Latter-day Saint Faith and Scholarship

This study assesses some of the interpretations of the name Liahona, which are unsatisfactory from a linguistic perspective. Since a dialect of Hebrew is the most likely underlying language of the Book of Mormon, the approach taken in this study parses the word Liahona into three meaningful segments in Hebrew: l-iah-ona; a Biblical Hebrew transliteration would be l-Yāh-Ɂōnấ. This name is a grammatical construction that attaches the prepositional prefix l- to Yāh, the name of “the Lord,” followed by the noun *Ɂōnấ. The preposition l- in this context denotes the following name as the agent or the one who is …

Religious Literacy Practices For Young Readers, Eric D. Rackley, Rebekah Kay Strain Jan 2022

Religious Literacy Practices For Young Readers, Eric D. Rackley, Rebekah Kay Strain

Religious Educator: Perspectives on the Restored Gospel

Although much of our gospel knowledge depends upon our interactions with scripture, misconceptions about reading it persist. One of the most enduring is the illusion of comprehension in which young readers mistakenly believe that reading words is sufficient to understand ideas.[1] To understand the important insights embedded in scripture and other complex texts, “reading must go considerably beyond the words alone.”[2] Words are sketches of ideas—not ideas themselves—so no text, however descriptive or eloquent, can include all the information necessary to understand its most compelling truths. For young readers to take full advantage of scripture and have the truths of …

Rethinking The Rod Of Iron, T. J. Uriona Jan 2022

Rethinking The Rod Of Iron, T. J. Uriona

BYU Studies

Near its beginning, the Book of Mormon relates the dream of an Israelite father and visionary prophet named Lehi. About 600 BCE, Lehi and his family “tarried in the wilderness,” having fled Jerusalem for a promised land, guided by the Lord (1 Ne. 8:2). In this dream, Lehi saw a symbolic scene with multiple elements, including a tree with desirable fruit and a river running near the tree. “And,” he said, “I beheld a rod of iron, and it extended along the bank of the river, and led to the tree” (1 Ne. 8:19). Lehi observed how people made their …

How The Book Of Mormon Reads Ancient Religious Texts, Kristian S. Heal, Zach Stevenson Jan 2022

How The Book Of Mormon Reads Ancient Religious Texts, Kristian S. Heal, Zach Stevenson

BYU Studies

The Book of Mormon turned the Latter-day Saints purposefully toward ancient religious texts. Early converts connected the Book of Mormon with lost texts recorded in the Bible. The space left by these lost books could be filled by the Book of Mormon. But not by the Book of Mormon alone. There was room to spare, and with it, a growing desire not only to find lost scriptures that were known but also to restore lost scriptures that were until then unknown (see D&C 9:2). This fervor was centrifugal, compelling Joseph Smith and others to seek out and reveal ancient texts …

Policy And Practice Brief 8: Teacher Training And Endorsement Requirements To Teach English Learners In Virginia, Virginia R. Massaro, Virginia Palencia, Merc Multilingual Education Research And Evaluation Team

MERC Publications

There is a growing need to ensure Virginia teachers have a grounding in effective practice for EL education. Teacher preparation programs in Virginia require preservice educators in mainstream classrooms to be trained in English Learner (EL) teaching methods, but how preparation programs meet this requirement varies. For educators wishing to be endorsed as English as a Second Language teachers, requirements have recently been reduced in scope. To supplement the training and qualifications required to receive licensure, professional development for teaching multilingual students should be commonplace.

"All The Litter As It Lay": Swift, Montagu, And Their Practice Of Thing Theory, Eli M. Phillips Jan 2022

"All The Litter As It Lay": Swift, Montagu, And Their Practice Of Thing Theory, Eli M. Phillips

Criterion: A Journal of Literary Criticism

In this article, I argue that, although "Thing Theory" was not so named until the 21st century, and has been mostly applied to prose of the 18th century and not its poetry, Jonathan Swift and Lady Mary Wortley Montagu engaged in a poetic thing theory of their own. For Swift, this meant examining the "thingness" of physical objects, leading to an uncertain conclusion about the poem as an object. For Montagu, the "thingness" of objects was instead downplayed, while the "thingness" of the genre of 18th-century satire, including its often ugly attitude toward women, was foregrounded, asking important questions about …

We propose two designs to gamify second language (L2) learning of Russian inflectional morphology: Treasure Hunt and Story Time. The goal of these designs is to focus learning on high-frequency word forms that are most strategic and effective for L2 acquisition in a way that stimulates engagement and builds lifelong learning skills.

Language is a tool for communication. The ability to speak, to engage in a meaningful conversation, and to comprehend the speech produced by native speakers is the main purpose of second language (L2) learning, and Russian is no exception. A recent survey of the current students and alumni of the Russian program at UiT The Arctic University of Norway (UiT) administered in December 2021 revealed that our students would like more training in practical speaking and writing skills as well as more focus on conversational Russian.

Book Review: Etazhi: Second Year Russian Language And Culture, Cori Anderson

The options for second-year Russian textbooks have been very limited, despite a growing number of textbooks at the first-year level and more advanced levels. Этажи fills the need for a stand-alone textbook that can be used for students who have already reached Novice High- Intermediate Low proficiency. What sets Этажи apart is the focus on real-life communication and conversation, and the use of real-life stories, provided by both native speakers of Russian and advanced learners. These written and recorded stories fill the book with relatable content and relevant cultural information, covering topics from dating to holidays to the Russian cafeteria, …

The Impact Of A Year-Long Professional Development On Teacher Self-Efficacy In Personal Writing And The Teaching Of Writing, Guang-Lea Lee, Terri Brodeur, Cherng-Jyh Yen, Tian Luo, Pauline Salim Muljana Jan 2022

The Impact Of A Year-Long Professional Development On Teacher Self-Efficacy In Personal Writing And The Teaching Of Writing, Guang-Lea Lee, Terri Brodeur, Cherng-Jyh Yen, Tian Luo, Pauline Salim Muljana

Teaching & Learning Faculty Publications

Long-term professional development (PD) initiatives are scant in the extant literature. This study examines the impact of a year-long, face-to-face teacher PD provided for teachers from a high-need elementary school to improve their personal writing and writing instruction. A mixed-methods approach was used to collect and analyze data primarily from pre- and post-surveys and interviews. Statistical analyses suggest that teachers’ self-efficacy toward writing instruction was improved, but not self-efficacy toward their personal writing. Various means of how the year-long teacher PD influenced their self-efficacy were demonstrated through qualitative analysis. Implications of conducting teacher PD on writing instruction were discussed.

Review: Steven C. Harper. First Vision: Memory And Mormon Origins. New York: Oxford University Press, 2019., Stephen C. Taysom

Mormon Studies Review

Steven C. Harper’s book First Vision: Memory and Mormon Origins is, if nothing else, perfectly titled. The book is like none other of the dozens written over the years about what Latter-day Saints call “the first vision.” To this point, authors interested enough to take up the subject have done so out of a variety of motives, which in turn have predictably produced an equally various collection of writings. The most common motives, of course, were, and remain, the apologetic and critical (what used to be known as the “anti-Mormon”). Harper demonstrates, with admirable lightness of touch, the fundamental, categorical …
