Articulating Korean American Women’S Power Amidst Conflicts Of Colonialism And War In Helie Lee’S Still Life With Rice, Kittiphong Praphan
Articulating Korean American Women’S Power Amidst Conflicts Of Colonialism And War In Helie Lee’S Still Life With Rice, Kittiphong Praphan
Manusya, Journal of Humanities
Gender is a quintessential issue in Asian American literature, since Asian Americans are seen as weak with feminine qualities, according to the Western colonial concept. This paper examines Korean American women’s power through an analysis of Hongyong, the female protagonist in Helie Lee’s Still Life with Rice, who survives Japanese colonization in Korea and the Korean War and finally starts her new life as a Korean American woman in the United States. Hongyong goes beyond the concept of patriarchy in Korea and rescues herself and her family with her intelligence, determination, power, and bravery. As an Asian woman who …
Empowering Biosemiotics, Charles Lassiter
Empowering Biosemiotics, Charles Lassiter
Philosophy Faculty Scholarship
One way to understand the basic semiotic relation is that a sign-vehicle signifies an object to an interpretant. Biosemioticians sometimes talk about this relationship in terms of “codes”. When thinking about this relationship in the context of language, a natural move is to conceptualize semiotic relationships among speakers, meanings, and utterances as codes: speakers encode messages in sentences, which are then decoded by an interpreter. This view of communication is inconsistent with core tenets of a distributed approach to language, which holds that language is an embodied and encultured activity taking place across multiple timescales. I argue that a neo-Aristotelian …
From Thermal Springs To Subway Benches: Exploring The Diversity Of Carbon Monoxide Dehydrogenases Through Metagenomes, Phylogenetics, And Machine Learning, Isaac Bigcraft
Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports
Carbon monoxide is well known as a toxic gas but can also be an important input and intermediary for microbial metabolisms. Carbon monoxide dehydrogenases (CODHs) serve as key enzyme complexes for a variety of microbial carbon monoxide (CO) utilization pathways. Such pathways include the Wood-Ljungdahl pathway, which is important in methanogenesis and acetogenesis, metal and sulfate reduction pathways, hydrogen production, and others. The CODH enzymes allow microbes to turn the traditionally toxic waste gas of CO into a useful carbon and energy source. Despite the flexibility of CODH enzymes, the use of carbon monoxide is still believed to be a …

Workin' Languages: Who We Are Matters In Our Writing, Sara P. Alvarez, Amy J. Wan, Eunjeong Lee
Publications and Research
The steady increase of movements of people around the world has transformed the face, potential, and expectations of the US writing classroom. These intersecting shifts have also contributed to critical discussions about how writing educators should integrate students’ linguistic diversity and ways of knowing into literacy instruction. This chapter’s central premise is to share with students how the work that they already do with languages has great value. Specifically, the chapter introduces terms, concepts, and strategies to support students in identifying how their own multilingual workin’ of languages contribute to the making of academic writing. Our goal is to support …
Chinese Language Education In Thai Social Context: A Case Study Of Chinese Language Teaching At Debsirin School, Bangkok, Ludan Cao
Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
This research investigates the factors affecting Matthayom Sueksa 1-3 (grade 7-9) students' attitudes towards learning Chinese language in the English Program of Debsirin School in Thailand. In this study, questionnaires were used to collect data from 60 students in those mentioned classed. The results show that there are both internal factors and external factors that affect students' attitudes. In terms of internal factors, students' interests, risk appetite, and awareness of the importance of Chinese language have a significant impact on their attitude towards learning Chinese language. On the other hand, the study also identified external factors, including teaching content, students' …

Carrying A Double Load: A Black Woman Doctoral Student's Experience Of Decolonizing Educational Leadership Research, Shekema S. Dunlap
Student Publications
Navigating academic spaces is challenging for first-generation college students, particularly for Black women doctoral students who produce decolonizing research at historically White institutions. For these Black women scholars, the workload is doubled. While learning to conduct research, Black women scholars must also survive the hidden curriculum of hegemonic academia while simultaneously doing the emotional labor of leading their committees towards an understanding and respect for Black women's intersectionality and its impacts on Black women scholars' ways of knowing. This chapter is an autoethnographic counternarrative of one Black woman doctoral student's endeavor to design and conduct Endarkened feminist research that honors …
The African American And The California Basic Skills Requirement For Teaching, Willie C. Thomas Ii
The African American And The California Basic Skills Requirement For Teaching, Willie C. Thomas Ii
University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations
This study examines why the passing rates of African Americans on the CBEST are the lowest in California at 60%. Madkins (2011) identified licensure testing as a significant reason why African Americans cannot enter the teaching progression. According to Darling-Hammond et al. (2016), California has an ongoing credentialed teacher shortage. An even more significant need is for teachers of color. According to the California Department of Education (2021), 60% of the state’s educator workforce is White, while the state student body, multicultural and multilingual, is only slightly more than 22% White. While licensure testing for teachers is required in all …
Cultural And Gender Shifts: Trends And Factors Hmong Male Students Face In Pursuit Of Higher Education, Sai Yang Xiong
Cultural And Gender Shifts: Trends And Factors Hmong Male Students Face In Pursuit Of Higher Education, Sai Yang Xiong
University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations
The educational trends in the attainment of Hmong American students in higher education have grown significantly over the past 40+ years. However, modern academia is still somewhat new to most United States Hmong refugees since their resettlement in 1975 after the Vietnam War. Hmong students are children of refugee immigrants who came to the United States with no formal schooling, limited English proficiency, and a low-socioeconomic background. Hmong parents believe that having an education will enable their children to seek employment, perform well in society, and gain financial stability. The purpose of this study was to analyze challenges that contribute …
Viola Music Written By Costa Rican Composers: Analysis Of Three Compositional Trends In Costa Rica, Karen Soto Huertas
Viola Music Written By Costa Rican Composers: Analysis Of Three Compositional Trends In Costa Rica, Karen Soto Huertas
Theses and Dissertations--Music
What could come from a country that just this past year celebrated 200 years of independence that was only discovered in 1502 and was under the yoke of the Spanish Empire for over 300 hundred years? What contribution to the art music community could this third-world country, Costa Rica, bring to the table? Specifically, what contributions could Costa Rica make to the viola repertoire, which status as a soloistic instrument was raised only 100 or so years ago? How could a small country contribute to the repertoire of this often-forgotten instrument? To answer these questions, I have embarked on research …

Momentary Endurance: The Effects Of Mouthpiece Pressure And Capillary Refill Time On Short-Term Muscle Recovery In Trumpet Players, Taylor Gustad
Theses and Dissertations--Music
The topic of proper mouthpiece pressure usage has been widely pushed off to the margins of trumpet pedagogy, only receiving the passing mention in a limited number of method books. This research paper contains a cross sectional view of the few, but most prominently used method books in the trumpet community that shows the prevalence of this issue, as well as steps to bring in new and useful information in this field. There are several aspects of mouthpiece pressure that should be studied; however, this paper focuses on its connection to momentary endurance and capillary refill time.
Momentary endurance is …

Leveraging Cultural Assets Of Culturally And Linguistically Diverse Individuals In Music Therapy: A Qualitative Phenomenological Study, Emma Grace King
Theses and Dissertations--Music
The purpose of this thesis was to explore how music therapists can engage in cultural humility and leverage cultural assets of those who are culturally and linguistically diverse (CLD). The primary research question involved in this study was: “In what ways can music therapists leverage cultural assets of CLD individuals in practice?” Sub-questions were: “What awareness, knowledge, and skills do music therapists need to grow in culturally sensitive practice?” “How can music therapists whose first language is English effectively serve linguistically diverse individuals?” “What steps might music therapists take to effectively serve culturally diverse individuals?” and “How might cultural and …
Human Rights, Constitutional Rights, And Judicial Review: Comparing And Assessing Michael Perry's Early And Contemporary Arguments, Daniel O. Conkle
Human Rights, Constitutional Rights, And Judicial Review: Comparing And Assessing Michael Perry's Early And Contemporary Arguments, Daniel O. Conkle
Articles by Maurer Faculty
In this Essay, I explore, compare, and evaluate two theoretical models of judicial review in individual rights cases, each proposed by Professor Michael J. Perry, albeit in books separated by three and a half decades. In his 1982 book, The Constitution, the Courts, and Human Rights: An Inquiry into the Legitimacy of Constitutional Policymaking by the Judiciary, Early Perry embraced an aggressive form of judicial activism, urging the Supreme Court to test political judgments through an open-ended search for political-moral truth. Contemporary Perry, by contrast, takes a very different approach. In his 2017 book, A Global Political Morality: Human Rights, …
Single Parent And Caregiver Perspectives On The Effects Of Caregiver Stress And Iep Meeting Eligibility, Kevin Mark Carter
Single Parent And Caregiver Perspectives On The Effects Of Caregiver Stress And Iep Meeting Eligibility, Kevin Mark Carter
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
The problem examined in this phenomenological study is how single African American parents and caregivers perceive the impact of caregiver stress on communications, trust, and intent to negotiate with school personnel after participation in their child’s annual IEP eligibility determination meeting. This research is important because parents’ and caregivers’ perceptions of their IEP meeting engagement may identify and reduce impediments to the formation of successful alliances with school personnel. Attribution and self-determination theories were used to analyze, interpret, and codify the experiences of study participants. Purposive sampling was used to select 18 single, African American parents and caregivers for participation. …

Perceptions Of Instructor Caring Behaviors Between English As A Second Language And Non-English As A Second Language Nursing Students, John Chukwuemeka Dike
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
AbstractEnglish as a second language (ESL) nursing students have a significantly higher attrition rate and lower National Council Licensure Examination (NCLEX) pass rate than their non-ESL counterparts. Instructor caring behaviors (ICBs) are the ways nursing instructors treat students with respect, taking care to avoid prejudices, stereotyping, and judgments in the teaching-learning process which present prelicensure faculty to grapple with the challenge of effectively meeting the learning needs of both ESL and non-ESL students. The purpose of this cross-sectional, comparative study, guided by Watson’s theory of human caring, was to explore the differences in perceptions of ICBs between ESL and non-ESL …

Teacher And Coach Perspectives Regarding The Role Of Preschool Literacy Coaches In Developing Preschool Teachers’ Literacy Pedagogy, Marilyn Grigsby
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
AbstractAccording to the National Assessment of Education Progress, students in one state in the midwestern United States showed little change in reading scores despite the use of literacy coaches. The problem of focus in this study was inadequate primary students’ reading achievement in the focus state. Bandura’s social learning theory was used in this basic qualitative study to increase understanding regarding the perspectives of five preschool literacy coaches and five teachers regarding the role of preschool literacy coaches in developing teachers’ literacy pedagogy. The research questions focused on how preschool teachers and preschool literacy coaches each described the role of …

AbstractThe problem explored in this study was the low achievement of third grade students on the English Language Arts (ELA) Partnership for Assessment of Readiness for College and Careers Assessment (PARCC). The purpose of this basic qualitative study was to explore teacher perceptions about third grade students in one charter school who were consistently scoring low on the PARCC assessment in ELA. The conceptual framework for this study was Vygotsky's Social Constructivist Theory. Vygotsky's Social Constructivist theory suggests that when learners are engaged in the process of learning, they are able to learn from the person who is presenting the …
A Correlational Investigation Of Father Emotional Presence And Gender Role Identity In African American Women, Malika Dandridge
A Correlational Investigation Of Father Emotional Presence And Gender Role Identity In African American Women, Malika Dandridge
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
The psychological well-being and gender role development of a woman is greatly affected by the emotional presence of her father growing up. Until recently, most of the research on father-daughter relationships has been done on Caucasian working-class families, and very little has been done on father-daughter relationships in the African American community. The purpose of this study was to examine the role of a father’s emotional presence (dependable, involved, engaged) and uncover whether this type of presence was correlated with a woman’s gender role identity among African American women aged 18 years of age or older. The socioeconomic status (working …
Novice Teachers’ Perceptions Of Liminality In Building Self-Efficacy Through Technology During Covid-19 Closures, Ashley Jane Mcintyre
Novice Teachers’ Perceptions Of Liminality In Building Self-Efficacy Through Technology During Covid-19 Closures, Ashley Jane Mcintyre
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
The COVID-19 pandemic created a social-educational problem in understanding how novice teachers developed self-efficacy through technology amidst distance learning. Exploring the social-educational problem of novice teachers’ liminality and construction of self-efficacy during coronavirus-related school closures is an emerging issue that justifies further research. A gap in research and understanding currently exists regarding novice teachers’ establishment of self-efficacy and liminal experience as first-year professionals during COVID-19-related school closures. The purpose of this qualitative study was to explore how novice teachers developed self-efficacy through technology amidst the liminal first-time experiences of distance learning. To explore this topic, three concepts were used: the …

Recently, research on uncertainty modeling is progressing rapidly and many essential and breakthrough studies have already been done. There are various ways such as fuzzy, intuitionistic and neutrosophic sets to handle these uncertainties.
Although these concepts can handle incomplete information in various real-world issues, they cannot address all types of uncertainty such as indeterminate and inconsistent information. Also, plithogenic sets as a generalization of crisp, fuzzy, intuitionistic fuzzy, and neutrosophic sets, which is a set whose elements are characterized by many attributes’ values. In this paper, our aim is to demonstrate and review the history of fuzzy, intuitionistic and neutrosophic …

The Unintended Consequences Of The Court's Religious Freedom Revolution: A History Of White Supremacy And Private Christian Church Schools, Vania Blaiklock
Scholarly Articles
Although private church schools have historically received less attention than charter schools and other private nonsectarian schools in public discourse, in recent years, the Supreme Court’s First Amendment jurisprudence has allowed private church schools to make great strides in achieving state funding. At a time where public education is facing criticism on all sides, it seems natural that school choice supporters are more vocal than ever. This Essay takes a closer look at private church schools and their relationship to white supremacy in anticipation of the Court’s decision in Carson ex rel. O.C. v. Makin. Ultimately, that case will …

Indigenous Language Revitalization: Success, Sustainability, And The Future Of Human Culture, Grace Lewis
Capstone Showcase
This thesis looks at different styles of Indigenous language revitalization programs and seeks to delineate the three most successful characteristics seen across differing designs in an effort to promote the presence of these characteristics in existing programs. The literature analyzed outlines three main schools of thought: first, that language-based education is the most effective program design, second, that language-based education is only effective if it is directed and driven by the community it serves, and third, that culture-based education is the most effective design. The data rejects the idea that one design is superior to another, and instead presents three …

A Thesis presented to the Graduate Faculty of The College of William & Mary in Candidacy for the Degree of Master of Arts
This thesis is a portfolio containing two essays about private Christian church schools with an introductory essay to connect both projects. The first essay, “A Convergence of Purpose: Segregation and White Supremacy in Contemporary Church Schools,” is a comprehensive examination of the development and creation of church schools that first looks at the distinction between church schools and segregation academies, and then assesses the relevance that the distinction, or the lack thereof, plays in maintaining white supremacy …
The Cost-Effectiveness And Feminization Of The Human Papillomavirus Vaccine, Audrey Jammes
The Cost-Effectiveness And Feminization Of The Human Papillomavirus Vaccine, Audrey Jammes
Scripps Senior Theses
Approved in 2006, the Human Papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine provided a medical breakthrough in combating cancer by inoculating first female and then male adolescents in 2010. In 2016, a new HPV vaccine was approved for all adolescents. However, it is the most expensive vaccine created in the United States and its female centered prescription led to debates regarding the vaccine’s necessity and risks. For the STS portion of this paper, analysis of the language in the vaccine’s prescriptions from 2006, 2010, and 2016 demonstrates two implicit assumptions regarding female health built into the vaccine’s rollout. Comparison of the two assumptions to …

Maksymilian Del Mar’s new book, Artefacts of Legal Inquiry: The Value of Imagination in Adjudication offers a finely drawn map of various ways of reasoning in and through law. The book is about the ways that thoughts, values, commitments and ways of seeing, move, take hold, settle, startle and – at times – release grip, reorient, and/or transmute. It is a book that is teeming with references. There are threads to pull at everywhere.

The Roots Of Collapse: Imposing Constitutional Governance, Catherine Baylin Duryea
The Roots Of Collapse: Imposing Constitutional Governance, Catherine Baylin Duryea
Faculty Publications
The foundational assumption of constitutional governance poses a conundrum for contemporary state-builders: a constitution heavily influenced by foreigners does not represent the views of the governed. Can a modern state-building effort foster democratic institutions when the new government reflects foreign? Nowhere was this tension more apparent than in Afghanistan, where the United States and the United Nations were heavily involved in drafting the 2004 Constitution. They shaped the process from the initial framework to the final, frenzied approval. Foreigners were engaged at both the procedural level—determining how the negotiations would occur and who would participate—and at the substantive level—providing input …

Doctor of Nursing Practice Projects
Background and Purpose: Type II Diabetes Mellitus (T2DM) is a serious chronic disease that requires knowledge, daily self-management, and lifestyle modifications. T2DM is a widespread disease in Western world, however, it affects racial minority immigrant populations, including Somalis at disproportionally higher rates than the general population. This quality improvement project was developed and piloted to discern whether culturally appropriate small group-based education program for Somali patients with T2DM may improve self-management skills to alleviate long-term complications.
Methods: This project used descriptive statistics to compare participants’ knowledge and T2DM self-management behavior pre and post intervention. Subsequent to Seattle University IRB approval, …
Implementation Of A Patient Satisfaction Survey: A Pilot Project, Amy Brenner
Implementation Of A Patient Satisfaction Survey: A Pilot Project, Amy Brenner
Doctor of Nursing Practice Projects
Background: Patients who report higher satisfaction scores have better healthcare outcomes and lower financial burden in comparison to those who report lower satisfaction scores. Those less satisfied with their medical care tend to have poorer physical and mental health, which can impact daily life. For students in particular, health status impacts academic performance. Patient satisfaction surveys are a standard tool used to determine areas needing improvement within a healthcare delivery system.
Objective: The purpose of this project was to implement a patient satisfaction survey at a student health center on a university campus.
Design: The project was a two-month pilot …
