Evaluating The Performance Impact Of Fine-Tuning Optimization Strategies On Pre-Trained Distilbert Models Towards Hate Speech Detection In Social Media, Aidan Mcgovern
Dissertations
Hate speech can be defined as forms of expression that incite hatred or encourage violence towards a person or group based on race, religion, gender, or sexual orientation. Hate speech has gravitated towards social media as its primary platform, and its propagation represents profound risks to both the mental well-being and physical safety of targeted groups. Countermeasures to moderate hate speech face challenges due to the volumes of data generated in social media, leading companies, and the research community to evaluate methods to automate its detection. The emergence of BERT and other pre-trained transformer-based models for transfer learning in the …

Exploring 3d Data Reuse And Repurposing Through Procedural Modeling, Rachel Opitz, Heather Richards-Rissetto, Karin Dalziel, Jessica Dussault, Greg Tunink
Department of Anthropology: Faculty Publications
Most contemporary 3D data used in archaeological research and heritage management have been created through ‘reality capture,’ the recording of the physical features of extant archaeological objects, structures, and landscapes using technologies such as laser scanning and photogrammetry (Garstki 2020, ch.2; Magnani et al. 2020). A smaller quantity of data are generated by Computer Aided Design (CAD) and Building Information Modeling (BIM) projects, and even fewer data are generated through procedural modeling, the rapid prototyping of multi-component threedimensional (3D) models from a set of rules (Figure 8.1.). It is unsurprising therefore that in archaeology and heritage, efforts around digital 3D …

"What's Worth Risking Eternal Damnation For": Modernism, Language And The Social Impact Of Art In The Works Of James Joyce, Hozier, And Lil Nas X, Saranpat Chiangprom
Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
This research investigates the notion of human sexuality in selected modernist literary works from James Joyce to postmodern music by Hozier and Lil Nas X regarding the criticism of institutionalized beliefs and the depiction of sexualities. From the sexual and spiritual awakening in A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man to the public onanism scene in Ulysses, Joyce has intensified one's apostasy and sexuality by optimizing and experimenting with the multiplicity of the meaning of words. The postmodern music selected for analysis which comprises a mid-tempo soul song titled "Take Me to Church" by Andrew John Hozier-Byrne, and …
The Acoustic Measurement Of English Vowel Duration Regarding Final Consonant Voicing Produced By L1 Thai Speakers, Chalita Taothong
The Acoustic Measurement Of English Vowel Duration Regarding Final Consonant Voicing Produced By L1 Thai Speakers, Chalita Taothong
Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
This acoustic study focuses on the phonetic phenomenon in English called the voicing effect in which vowel duration followed by voiced consonants is longer than those followed by voiceless consonant counterparts. This study aims to 1) study the duration of English vowels preceding voiced consonants longer than vowels preceding voiceless consonants, which are produced by L1 Thai speakers. 2) investigate the influence of English tense and lax vowels on the vowel duration ratio regarding voiced and voiceless final consonants, which are produced by L1 Thai speakers. Participants include 10 students studying at Chulalongkorn University from various faculties. The research instruments …

An Analytical Network Process (Anp) Model For Choosing Optimal Public-Private Partnership (Ppp) Contract Types For Infrastructure Projects, Su Lae Yee Zaw
An Analytical Network Process (Anp) Model For Choosing Optimal Public-Private Partnership (Ppp) Contract Types For Infrastructure Projects, Su Lae Yee Zaw
Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
With the rapid social and economic development, a great deal of expenditure is crucial for the nation's infrastructure development. Nevertheless, the governments of many developing nations have been experienced with the limited budget and technical inability to deliver effective public infrastructures. Public-private partnership (PPP) has been adopted as an alternative collaboration arrangement between the government and the private sector in many nations to overcome these challenges. PPP can be defined as a long-term contract between a public agency and a private entity for rendering public facilities, including design, construct, finance, operate, and manage the project. The PPP contract types can …

Emerging Technology’S Language Wars: Smart Contracts, Carla L. Reyes
Faculty Journal Articles and Book Chapters
Work at the intersection of blockchain technology and law represents a highly interdisciplinary area of inquiry. Often, researchers, law-makers, lawyers, and other stakeholders unnecessarily debate issues because of linguistic misunderstandings. As the third of four studies examining the impact of clashes of linguistic meaning on law and policy around emerging technologies, this Essay uses smart contracts as a case study to demonstrate the real legal harm that arises from a failure to communicate. Specifically, this Essay uses techniques from corpus linguistics to reveal the inherent value conflicts embedded in definitional differences and debates as to whether the law should “accommodate” …

Fostering Successful Communities Of Collaboration Through Educational Partnerships: Strengthening Bilingual Learners' Language And Literacy Achievement Along The Texas-Mexican Border, Isela Almaguer
Bilingual and Literacy Studies Faculty Publications
There is an undisputable need to form collaborative partnerships between schools, families, homes, and communities across the nation. Collaborative educational partnerships are the cornerstone for student success. With increasingly diverse student populations, schools must communicate and collaborate with families and communities to bridge the wide gap that exists between home and school. With a dominant Spanish-speaking population of Mexican descent, as that of children living in the Southern tip of the Texas-Mexican border, known as The Rio Grande Valley, barriers such as low social economic status and limited English proficiency may impede much-needed communication between schools, homes, and communities. These …

“Never Anything About The Asian Experience”: An Asiancrit Analysis Of Asian American Teachers In The Midwest, Jung Kim
Education Department Faculty Articles
Although Asian Americans are the fastest-growing racial minority group in the United States, projected to be 10% of the population by 2050, they only comprise 2% of the teaching force. There is relatively little research about the experiences, recruitment efforts, or retention of Asian American teachers. This qualitative study seeks to add to the extant literature by seeking to better under the experiences of Asian American pK-12 teachers in the Midwest, primarily in northern Illinois. This study draws upon both a sociopolitical understanding of being Asian American and three specific tenets of AsianCrit: (re)constructive history; story, theory, and praxis; and …
The Personal Must Always Be Political: A History Of Survivors' Narratives In Anti-Sexual Violence Zines, Jeannine Colby Fortin
The Personal Must Always Be Political: A History Of Survivors' Narratives In Anti-Sexual Violence Zines, Jeannine Colby Fortin
Honors Papers
This thesis constructs a history of the changing role of survivors’ narratives in anti-sexual violence zines from the 1990s to the early 2020s. I argue that zines are a window to the changing politics of the American anti-sexual violence movement. Through this lens, I find that the role of survivors’ narratives in zines has complexly changed and ultimately diminished over time. I examine how and posit why this change occurred in zines and the anti-sexual violence movement. Among other reasons, I find that both have followed the traditional arc of social movements, which chronologically involves emergence, coalescence, institutionalization, and decline. …
Demons Of Analogy: The Encounter Between Music And Language After Mallarme, Joshua Tasman Girardeau Reinier
Demons Of Analogy: The Encounter Between Music And Language After Mallarme, Joshua Tasman Girardeau Reinier
Honors Papers
Why do we make analogies? The standard definition suggests “[a] comparison between two things, typically for the purpose of explanation or clarification” (Oxford Languages); an analogy is when something borrows another vocabulary, another set of terms, or another paradigm, to facilitate a deeper understanding. But here, I argue that analogy is more than a didactic tool for making explanations more convenient: rather, analogy is the essential way that we understand ourselves in relation to others—for my purposes, how artists understand their own medium in relation to other mediums. Specifically, I use the concept of analogy to explore the encounter between …

Japaneseness For Western Audiences In Video Games: How The West Came To Desire Japanese Cultural Marks In Their Video Games, Benjamin Echikson
Honors Papers
This honors thesis studies trends in the localization of “Japaneseness” -- aspects of Japanese culture -- in Japanese videos published in the West over the 40-year history of Japanese home console video games. Through case study analysis and comparisons of Japanese versions of video games with their Western counterparts that span from the mid-1980s to the present day, this thesis examines how Japanese video game companies choose to either remove or keep aspects of Japanese culture in the West, and how Western players respond to Japaneseness in their video games. This thesis argues that over the 40 year history of …

Telemental health, specifically Acceptance and Commitment Art Therapy, is one way to meet the needs of this underserved population. The researcher used …
Educating The Interprofessional Team And Family About Sensory Challenges Children With Autism Spectrum Disorder May Experience, Delanie Vitosh
Educating The Interprofessional Team And Family About Sensory Challenges Children With Autism Spectrum Disorder May Experience, Delanie Vitosh
Occupational Therapy Capstones
Introduction: Children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) often demonstrate difficulties processing and interpreting sensory input experiencing over-responsiveness or under-responsiveness to sensory stimulation (Autism Speaks, n.d.). A sensory education program was created to educate the interprofessional team and families about sensory challenges children with ASD experience and what strategies can be used to prevent or decrease the number of outbursts caused by over-stimulation, under-stimulation, and their potential impact on participation in meaningful occupations. Based on the literature review, non-compliance with home programs is a major factor negatively affecting therapeutic outcomes (Rone-Adams, Stern, & Walker, 2004). However, Koegel, Bryan, Su, Vaidya, and …

Investigating Teacher Perceptions Of Montana Kindergarten To Second-Grade Play-Based Learning Practices During The Covid-19 Pandemic, Erin N. Ellis
Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers
The purpose of this mixed-method study was to examine early elementary education teachers' perceptions of the presence, feasibility, and desirability to implement play-based learning, including free play, guided play, and games in Montana public school K-2 classrooms, and the impact COVID-19 health and safety protocols had on the implementation of play-based learning compared to the previous year (before COVID-19). Using a sequential explanatory research design, teachers self-reported their ability to implement play-based learning, including playbased learning forms, activities, and materials before the COVID-19 pandemic (retrospectively) compared to during COVID-19 and the impact the COVID-19 health and safety protocols had on …

Expanding American Indian Land Stewardship: An Environmental Solution For A Country In Crisis, Haley Edmonds
Expanding American Indian Land Stewardship: An Environmental Solution For A Country In Crisis, Haley Edmonds
Law Student Publications
Land is the central foundation around which all life is formed. Therefore, societies must have a stable connection with the land in order to be structurally sound. If this connection is weak or inflexible, every building-block of civilization laid on top of it will inevitably crumble. Some societies have established stable relationships with the land by working around and responding to nature’s rhythms in order to satisfy their needs. Whereas other societies have ignored nature’s intricacies and instead have tried to strong-arm nature into yielding to their whims. These two diametrically opposed approaches to conceiving of humans’ relationship with the …
Framing And Contesting Unauthorized Work, Angela D. Morrison
Framing And Contesting Unauthorized Work, Angela D. Morrison
Faculty Scholarship
Unauthorized workers face precarity in the workplace and the threat of forced expulsion from their communities. Some of the reasons for that precarity result from how the law frames unauthorized workers. The law views unauthorized workers as lacking full human or civil rights, as “unauthorized,” to the exclusion of their other identities. The legal system also creates a binary that views unauthorized workers as either criminals who are complicit in their exploitation or passive victims for employers to exploit. This Article draws on social movement literature to theorize the processes that result in this framing and to explore how immigrant …

Factors That Affect Native English Speakers’ Comfort Levels When Communicating With Non-Native English Speakers, Kayla Nymeyer, Dan Dewey, William Eggington, Wendy Baker-Smemoe
Faculty Publications
This study explores native English speakers’ (NESs) self reported comfort levels when speaking with non-native English speakers (NNESs) from different first language (L1) backgrounds and in six different communication situations. NESs (n=122) listened to Spanish L1 and Chinese L1 NNESs with low, mid or high levels of English proficiency and rated their comfort level interacting with them. Results indicated that higher proficiency speakers were rated significantly higher (more comfortable as interlocutors) than Mid which were in turn rated higher than Low proficiency speakers. Spanish L1 speakers were rated higher than Chinese L1 speakers except at low proficiency levels. Ratings for …

Multidimensional Signals And Analytic Flexibility: Estimating Degrees Of Freedom In Human-Speech Analyses, Stefano Coretta, Joseph V. Casillas, Joseph A. Stanley, Timo B. Roettger
Faculty Publications
Recent empirical studies have highlighted the large degree of analytic flexibility in data analysis that can lead to substantially different conclusions based on the same data set. Thus, researchers have expressed their concerns that these researcher degrees of freedom might facilitate bias and can lead to claims that do not stand the test of time. Even greater flexibility is to be expected in fields in which the primary data lend themselves to a variety of possible operationalizations. The multidimensional, temporally extended nature of speech constitutes an ideal testing ground for assessing the variability in analytic approaches, which derives not only …
Order Of Operations In Sociophonetic Analysis, Joseph A. Stanley
Order Of Operations In Sociophonetic Analysis, Joseph A. Stanley
Faculty Publications
In modern sociophonetic data analysis, a researcher makes numerous decisions when processing their data. Many of the “big” decisions include how data is collected, how audio is transcribed, how these transcriptions are aligned to the audio, and how acoustic measurements are extracted. Once a spreadsheet of numbers has been generated, further decisions must be made regarding normalization, detecting and handling outliers, and excluding tokens irrelevant to the research question. This paper takes a closer look at this second group of decisions—those made after acoustic measurements have been extracted—and shows that the order in which they are applied can have significant …

Pillai scores in Sociolinguistics
- A way to quantify overlap in multiple dimensions (e.g., F1, F2, duration) (Hay et al., 2006; Nycz & Hall-Lew 2013)
- Some concern about unequal vowel categories sizes (Johnson 2015; convo on Twitter June 2, 2021)
- Our solution: a big simulation to show exactly what impact sample size has on Pillai scores
The Simulation
1. Start with a single bivariate normal distribution.
2. Sample two “vowel classes” from this distribution. – Ground Truth is they’re merged.
3. Calculate the Pillai score – Should be close to 0 because they’re merged!
4. Repeat many, many times.
