Understanding Students' Perceptions Of Doing Mathematics: A Cultural Comparison, Gabriel T. Matney, Corrinne Fischer, Jack L. Jackson Ii

School of Inclusive Teacher Education Faculty Publications

Garnering different kinds of data from students about their perceptions of mathematics helps teachers, teacher leaders, districts and researchers better understand students' perceptions. In this study, we investigated and compared students’ perceptions of doing mathematics from samples of students from the United States, China, and Fiji. We administered the Draw Yourself Doing Mathematics instrument to students at three grade levels in China, Fiji, and the United States of America. Statistically significant differences among perceptions in the three countries and the three grade levels were observed. Student drawings were further analyzed for other qualitative components, including factors affecting the learning environment, …

Contextual Inference Reading Comprehension Skill Activities As Determinants Of Reading Comprehension Performance, Joyce Njiiri Jan 2022

Contextual Inference Reading Comprehension Skill Activities As Determinants Of Reading Comprehension Performance, Joyce Njiiri

Journal of the Language Association of Eastern Africa

Reading comprehension is one of the most important features in the learning process for second language learners because texts are the means through which most concepts are learnt. However, it is one of the least developed linguistic skills as manifested in the Kenya National Examination Council (KNEC 2010; 2011; 2013;2015;2017;2018). KNEC attributes poor performance in reading comprehension of passages to inadequate reading comprehension skill activities of contextual inference, note-making, paraphrasing, and summary writing among others during the reading comprehension lessons. Additionally, there is notable lack of exposure to reading comprehension skill activities to secondary school learners. The purpose of this …

Expected growth of the job market for cyber security professionals in both the US and the UK remains strong for the foreseeable future. While there are many roles to be found in cyber security, that vary from penetration tester to chief information security officer (CISO). One job of particular interest is security architect. The rise in Zero Trust Architecture (ZTA) implementations, especially in the cloud environment, promises an increase in the demand for these security professionals. A security architect requires a set of knowledge, skills, and abilities covering the responsibility for integrating the various security components to successfully support an …

Colonialism And Indigenous Peoples Of Taiwan, Sabrina Wong Jan 2022

Colonialism And Indigenous Peoples Of Taiwan, Sabrina Wong

BYU Asian Studies Student Journal

Taiwan can be found about 100 miles off the southeastern coast of China in the Pacific Ocean. It consists of a main island and many smaller surrounding islands. Before the arrival of the Dutch, the only inhabitants of the island were the Taiwanese indigenous peoples, also known as the Formosan people, Austronesian Taiwanese people, or Gaoshan people, who had been there for thousands of years. For consistency, throughout this paper, I will refer to them as Taiwanese indigenous peoples. The Taiwanese indigenous peoples are made up of different tribes, traditionally with over 26, 16 of which are recognized today by …

Faculty Books & Book Chapters

The importance of published accounts by African slave ship survivors is well-known but not their existence in large numbers. Fogleman and Hanserd catalog nearly five hundred discrete accounts and more than 2,500 printings of them over four centuries in numerous Atlantic languages. Short biographies of each African, print histories of the complete or partial life story. Five Hundred African Voices an invaluable resource for scholars, teachers, students, and others wishing to study transatlantic slavery using African Voices.

Countercode: Bodies Un-Becoming, Aaron Reynolds Jan 2022

Countercode: Bodies Un-Becoming, Aaron Reynolds

Graduate Thesis Exhibition Catalogue Gallery, 2022

In COUNTERCODE: BODIES UN-BECOMING, my intent is not to present a cohesive map or identify a single, primary mode of resistance. Rather, the five artists I have selected —Shana Moulton, Cooper Gibson, Amy Yeager, Jazmine Morris, and Clara Wouters—explore the socio-cultural implications of identity expression and persona play, particularly as it relates to the encoding of subjectivity in contemporary forms of digital media and pop culture. Their works glitch codes, find slippages, and create opacities in the fabric of capitalist realism, a term used by theorist Mark Fisher to describe the widespread acceptance of capitalism as the only viable economic …

Why Did Jeffers Omit "Shine, Perishing Republic" From Tamar And Other Poems And How Might It Matter, Tim Hunt Jan 2022

Why Did Jeffers Omit "Shine, Perishing Republic" From Tamar And Other Poems And How Might It Matter, Tim Hunt

Jeffers Studies

This article notes that Robinson Jeffers initially planned to include “Shine, Perishing Republic” in the collection Tamar and Other Poems (1924), then deleted it from the collection and subsequently published it in the Roan Stallion grouping of Roan Stallion, Tamar and Other Poems (1925). This decision provides insight into Jeffers’ shifting conception of the narrative Tamar, and reconsidering “Shine, Perishing Republic” in its original placement in the Tamar collection reveals the extent to which the poem responds to World War I and the Versailles Peace rather than, more generally, the social and cultural ferment of the mid-1920s. The article attempts …

Singapore’S Speak Mandarin Campaign: A Historiographical Review, Xing Fang Jan 2022

Singapore’S Speak Mandarin Campaign: A Historiographical Review, Xing Fang

Asian Review

Language policy functions as a critical instrument in Singapore’s nation building since its independence in the 1960s. This paper intends to examine some major literature in the past fifty years concerning Singapore’s well-known Speak Mandarin Campaign, in order to reveal the chronological development in scholarship. The content of the literature foregrounds paradigm shifts from viewing Mandarin as an identity marker to valuing it as linguistic capital, and from treating identity as a bounded concept to acknowledging its fluidity in the context of globalisation. The evident historical changes in the writing of the studies also reflect shifts in terms of the …

Why Abraham Was Not Wrong To Lie, Duane Boyce Jan 2022

Why Abraham Was Not Wrong To Lie, Duane Boyce

BYU Studies

The book of Genesis contains two well-known accounts of Abraham lying about his wife, Sarah (Gen. 12:10–20; 20:1–18).1 In each of them, Abraham reports that Sarah is his sister, 2 Sarah is then taken from Abraham, trouble ensues for those who have taken her, and Sarah is then returned to Abraham. The account in Genesis 20 also explicitly tells us that the Lord protected Sarah from being “touched” in the circumstances (v. 6), and the account in Genesis 12, too, tells us that the Lord intervened, presumably for the same purpose (v. 17).

Forecasting The How And Why Of Corporate Crime’S Demise, Miriam H. Baer Jan 2022

Forecasting The How And Why Of Corporate Crime’S Demise, Miriam H. Baer

Faculty Scholarship

The law of corporate criminal liability has long elicited deep criticism from many quarters. Respondeat superior, the judge-created attribution rule that affixes criminal blame to corporations, enables the government to exercise too much power while securing too little accountability. It is hardly surprising, then, that the Journal of Corporation Law has published a symposium volume called, “Imagining a World Without Corporate Criminal Law,” of which this article is part.

My contribution predicts that corporate crime’s demise will arise, not from a direct attack, but rather from a series of indirect punches. Respondeat superior premises the corporation’s liability on that of …

Textualism, Dynamism, And The Meaning Of "Sex", Bill Watson Jan 2022

Textualism, Dynamism, And The Meaning Of "Sex", Bill Watson

Cardozo Law Review de•novo

A recent Article by Professors William N. Eskridge, Brian G. Slocum, and Stefan Th. Gries critically examines textualism, both in general and as applied in Bostock v. Clayton County. This Essay makes three points in reply. First, the authors criticize strawman versions of textualism that no mainstream legal interpreter claims to hold. Second, the authors’ examples of “societal dynamism” do not put any pressure on textualism properly understood. And third, the authors’ corpus-linguistics analysis of the word “sex” is, from a textualist perspective, irrelevant to the issue in Bostock.

Returning To Their Roots: Examining The Reintegration Experiences Of Returned Indigenous Migrant Youth In Guatemala, Jenn Miller Scarnato Jan 2022

Returning To Their Roots: Examining The Reintegration Experiences Of Returned Indigenous Migrant Youth In Guatemala, Jenn Miller Scarnato

Social Service Faculty Publications

This article examines the reintegration experiences of Indigenous migrant youth returned to Guatemala from the United States and Mexico, thereby filling a gap in extant literature. This qualitative study employed a critical ethnographic approach with reflexive thematic analysis of fieldwork and interviews with social service providers working with this population through the lens of Critical Latinx Indigeneities. Four major themes emerged: identity negotiation (subthemes being Indigenous identities and returned migrant identities), trauma and its consequences, institutional and internalized oppression, and decolonization. Implications for social work emphasize the importance of Indigenous and decolonizing approaches to social work.

Assessing The Appropriateness Of The Cultural Formulation Interview In Conceptualizing Reverse Culture Shock, Katja Nielsen

All Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Other Capstone Projects

Utilizing the Cultural Formulation Interview (CFI) to identify social and cultural variables predicting the cross-cultural experience of reverse culture shock, this study aims at clarifying the process of re-acculturation of international students in the United States by comparing quantitative and qualitative measures. Thirty-two participants completed demographics and questionnaires and 18 decided to further partake in the CFI. Results from the Reentry Shock Scale as well as the CFI indicate that a majority of individuals experience problems and distress associated with returning home, yet to varying degrees and intensity. Through assessment of each participant’s experience with reverse culture shock, twelve out …

Representations Of Native Americans In Contemporary Media: Dances With Wolves, Diane Sawyer, And Reservation Dogs, Jacqueline Hendry Jan 2022

Representations Of Native Americans In Contemporary Media: Dances With Wolves, Diane Sawyer, And Reservation Dogs, Jacqueline Hendry

Dissertations and Theses

Thirty years after Dances with Wolves won the Academy Award for Best Picture, and ten years after the 20/20 special “Hidden America: Children of the Plains” recycled ‘90’s Hollywood tropes to report on poverty on the Pine Ridge Reservation, the 2021 comedy series Reservation Dogs marks a watershed moment in Native representation. Led by an Indigenous cast and Indigenous creative team, it features contemporary aspects of Native life through a particular niche humor that doesn’t explain itself to audiences not in the know. The as-yet unique series has been well-received by Native and non-Native audiences, but in order to appreciate …

"We're Not Just Well Suited, We Are Ethically Obligated!": Reimagining Technical And Professional Communication Pedagogy As Advocacy Against Discriminatory Digital Technologies, Anshare Antoine

Electronic Theses and Dissertations, 2020-2023

This dissertation expands on scholarship that examines efforts at incorporating a social justice framework into pedagogy, specifically, the role of technical and professional communication (TPC) faculty in addressing discriminatory digital technologies within a social-justice-oriented tech ethics pedagogy. I observe that despite the thousands of computer technology students who graduate from their programs every year in the US with the latest training, there seems to be no change to the adverse tech culture that produces discriminatory and racist work environments and digital technologies. The implication is that computer technology programs may not be prioritizing a tech ethics pedagogy that supports addressing …

The purpose of this study was to examine an effective, culturally informed model for intergenerational leadership transfer within the Alliance Church of Merced (ACOM) in Merced, California. The project consisted of a qualitative case study of the three generations of church members in the Alliance Church of Merced to identify an effective, culturally informed model for leadership transfer within the church. The three generations were comprised of the first generation (1.0)—members who were born in Laos and came to the United States when they were teenagers; the 1.5 generation—members who were born in Laos and came to the United States …

Language Learning: Access And Equity, Ashley N. Bonsen Jan 2022

Language Learning: Access And Equity, Ashley N. Bonsen

All Electronic Theses and Dissertations

As humans evolve, so do their languages, cultures, and practices. In a world that is becoming increasingly connected and multilingual, access to language learning has never been more important. What remains open to question are modern perceptions of and access to language learning for everyone from English language learners to students with disabilities and mainstream students alike. This literature review was conducted to investigate perceptions of multilingualism and the factors that influence access to language learning. In sum, three salient elements play into this social calculation: beliefs about multilingualism, socioeconomic effects on language access, and racialized inequities inhibiting access to …

“It Wasn’T Just About Learning How To Speak Spanish”: Engaging Histories Of Oppression And Enslavement In Spanish Heritage Language Education, Tania Avilés, Anthony J. Harb Jan 2022

“It Wasn’T Just About Learning How To Speak Spanish”: Engaging Histories Of Oppression And Enslavement In Spanish Heritage Language Education, Tania Avilés, Anthony J. Harb

Publications and Research

We present a curricular intervention in elementary Spanish heritage language in a Hispanic serving institution located in the US Northeast (Bronx, NYC), that aims to contextualize Latinx students’ experiences and perceptions of Blackness within broader histories of oppression and enslavement. Our practice brings together critical Latinx pedagogy and critical approaches to Spanish heritage language education to facilitate sociohistorical consciousness for both language instructors and students through the use of open-access Latinx archival resources. We outline a three-week unit designed using the First Blacks in the Americas online collection curated by the City University of New York Dominican Studies Institute. During …

Too Fast? Too Slow? A Novel Approach For Identifying Extreme Response Behavior In Online Surveys, Manasvi Kumar, Joseph S. Valacich, Jeffrey L. Jenkins, David Kim

Faculty Publications

Some participants of online surveys engage in extreme answering behavior while generating responses (i.e., they respond too fast or too slow) relative to population norms. Here, we demonstrate how participants’ navigation behaviors can be used to potentially identify such responses. We administered an online survey where students (who were earlier instructed to complete a task) report lenience scores towards non-appropriate behavior while completing the task. We draw on cognitive dissonance theory to posit that failure to follow instruction predicts lenience scores. We then created different datasets by excluding data from participants flagged by our metrics and generated predictive models. We …

Dual Language Catholic Schools: Innovation And Equity--Considerations For Making The Transition To Dual Language, Carrie Fuller, Elena Sada Jan 2022

Dual Language Catholic Schools: Innovation And Equity--Considerations For Making The Transition To Dual Language, Carrie Fuller, Elena Sada

Journal of Catholic Education

The multiple academic and social advantages of a dual language education are well known; yet there is little practical guidance for Catholic school leaders who are taking on this whole school change. This paper explores the necessary steps for Catholic school leaders to develop equitable dual language schools. Guided by the Gospel principles of love and justice and using the Community of Practice theoretical framework, the authors argue that taking thoughtful risks in transforming one’s school can lead to meaningful learning in service to culturally and linguistically diverse students. Seven main implementation areas for developing a dual language Catholic school …

Decolonization Of Education: How Educators Can Aid Transcultural Acculturation To Advance Communities Committed To Social Justice, Aradhana Mudambi, Elena Sada

Journal of Catholic Education

Cultures recreate themselves constantly, sometimes through natural transformations, sometimes through imposition. While colonialism was atrocious, partly because it transformed cultures by imposing disfigured identities and understandings (Fanon, 1963), we cannot reset cultures to how they were before conquest. That would require erasing languages now spoken for generations, dismantling religions and beliefs now practiced for hundreds of years, and purifying food habits now valued by the palettes of those formerly colonized. We can, however, work towards decolonizing our present- day society. Specifically, we can identify how colonialism continues to position some populations and their cultures as inferior (minoritized) and others as …
