Google Translate And Biliterate Composing: Second-Graders' Use Of Digital Translation Tools To Support Bilingual Writing, Lindsey Rowe

Publications

Research is needed exploring how teachers and students in English-medium schools transform classrooms to welcome and value bilingualism and biliteracy. This article draws on social literacies and placed resources perspectives to explore how one classroom of second-grade students used Google Translate as a tool to support their biliterate composing. Constant comparative analyses revealed three patterns related to students' use of this tool. Students used Google Translate to support their inclusion of bilingual text and to interact with peers. They also negotiated limitations around the use of Google Translate. Examples of each pattern are used to illustrate how students interactionally engaged …

Pagpapalit-Koda Bilang Daluyan Ng Damdamin Sa "Patay Na Si Hesus", Jeconiah Louis Dreisbach

Starved For Knowledge: The Effect Of Language Deprivation And “Mainstream” Education On Deaf Accessibility To The United States Education System, Katherine Arpino Apr 2022

Starved For Knowledge: The Effect Of Language Deprivation And “Mainstream” Education On Deaf Accessibility To The United States Education System, Katherine Arpino

Honors Scholar Theses

The prevalence of language deprivation in deaf and hard of hearing youth makes the United States public education system fundamentally inaccessible to that portion of the population. Previous research has demonstrated that depriving prelingually deaf children of an accessible, visual language during the critical language acquisition period has long-term effects on their reading comprehension, mental health, social development, and cognitive development (Friedman and Rusoe, 2015; Hall et al., 2019; Cheng et al., 2019; Hall, 2017). Furthermore, the lack of bilingual-bimodal education (or purely signed education) in the United States public education system sets deaf children up for failure, as they …

语言测试成绩与当地能力等级对接研究:以中国英语能力等级量表 (Cse) 为例, Spiros Papageorgiou, Sha Wu, Ching-Ni Hsieh, Richard J. Tannenbaum, Mengmeng Cheng

Chinese/English Journal of Educational Measurement and Evaluation |

Aligning Language Test Scores To Local Proficiency Levels: The Case Of China’S Standards Of English Language Ability (Cse), Spiros Papageorgiou, Sha Wu, Ching-Ni Hsieh, Richard J Tannenbaum, Mengmeng Cheng

Chinese/English Journal of Educational Measurement and Evaluation | 教育测量与评估双语期刊

The past decade has seen an emerging interest in aligning test scores to language proficiency levels of external performance scales or frameworks, such as the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR). Such alignment is ultimately a claim about the interpretation of test scores in relation to external levels of language proficiency. To support such a claim, established procedures should be carefully implemented and documented, and multiple sources of evidence should be collected. This paper demonstrates the steps in building an argument for aligning the scores of an international English language proficiency test to the levels of China’s Standards of English …

Art Unbound: Youth Participatory Action Research As Pedagogy, Derek Fenner

SC Upstate Research Symposium

This study engaged youth in a high school continuation program for students pushed out of traditional schools, in a yearlong arts-based youth participatory action research (YPAR) course aimed at enhancing their understanding of themselves as humans with enormous potential. The course allowed them to see how they already have the capacity and knowledge to act as artists, researchers, and even teachers. A major outcome of this study was to allow youth in the course to be seen, by their peers, by staff, and by the larger public in ways that that will empower them to remain engaged in their own …

Relation Between Bilingual Child Gesture Use And Language Development, Carla Jauregui, Perla B. Gámez Phd Apr 2022

Relation Between Bilingual Child Gesture Use And Language Development, Carla Jauregui, Perla B. Gámez Phd

Undergraduate Research and Engagement Symposium

Gesture serves as a bridge for communication for children who cannot yet fully communicate verbally. Child gesture is closely related to future vocabulary scores (Rowe & Goldin-Meadow, 2009). Many studies with similar results have an English monolingual sample but not many studies have a bilingual sample. In this study, 45 bilingual participant’s gestures and their vocabulary growth were measured to see if a relation between the two existed. We found a negative relation between gesture use at 18-months and vocabulary growth from 18 to 30 months. This is an unexpected result as it does not agree with previous literature.

Improving Negation Detection With Negation-Focused Pre-Training, Hung Thinh Truong, Timothy Baldwin, Trevor Cohn, Karin Verspoor Apr 2022

Improving Negation Detection With Negation-Focused Pre-Training, Hung Thinh Truong, Timothy Baldwin, Trevor Cohn, Karin Verspoor

Natural Language Processing Faculty Publications

Negation is a common linguistic feature that is crucial in many language understanding tasks, yet it remains a hard problem due to diversity in its expression in different types of text. Recent work has shown that state-of-the-art NLP models underperform on samples containing negation in various tasks, and that negation detection models do not transfer well across domains. We propose a new negation-focused pre-training strategy, involving targeted data augmentation and negation masking, to better incorporate negation information into language models. Extensive experiments on common benchmarks show that our proposed approach improves negation detection performance and generalizability over the strong baseline …

Language Revitalization: Strategies To Reverse Language Shift, Jessica Martin Apr 2022

Language Revitalization: Strategies To Reverse Language Shift, Jessica Martin

Student Research Symposium

Language shift, the process by which a language loses speakers until it becomes extinct, is occurring in speech communities all over the world. This process is influenced by internal and external political, social, and economic factors unique to each community. As its causes and effects are not uniform, a universal model for reversing language shift does not exist. However, several broad principles can be applied across multiple contexts and situations for successful language revitalization. It is essential for the speech community to be the primary decision maker in any program. A thorough assessment of the community’s current status, challenges, and …

Social and Behavioral Health Faculty Research

Sex or gender differences in the risk of Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias (ADRD) differ by world region, suggesting that there are potentially modifiable risk factors for intervention. However, few epidemiological or clinical ADRD studies examine sex differences; even fewer evaluate gender in the context of ADRD risk. The goals of this perspective are to: (1) provide definitions of gender, biologic sex, and sexual orientation, and the limitations of examining these as binary variables; (2) provide an overview of what is known with regard to sex and gender differences in the risk, prevention, and diagnosis of ADRD; and (3) discuss …

This study evaluated the dissemination and implementation of a culturally tailored community-wide campaign (CWC), Tu Salud ¡Si Cuenta! (TSSC), to augment fruit and vegetable (FV) consumption and physical activity (PA) engagement among low-income Latinos of Mexican descent living along the U.S.-Mexico Border in Texas. TSSC used longitudinal community health worker (CHW) home visits as a core vehicle to enact positive change across all socioecological levels to induce behavioral change. TSSC’s reach, effectiveness, adoption, implementation, and maintenance (RE-AIM) was examined. A dietary questionnaire and the Godin-Shepherd Exercise Questionnaire measured program effectiveness on mean daily FV consumption and weekly PA engagement, respectively. …

“Researcher-As-Instrument” In Qualitative Research: The Complexities Of The Educational Researcher’S Identities, Bogum Yoon Dr., Christine Uliassi Apr 2022

“Researcher-As-Instrument” In Qualitative Research: The Complexities Of The Educational Researcher’S Identities, Bogum Yoon Dr., Christine Uliassi

The Qualitative Report

The purpose of this study was to reexamine the principle of researcher-as-instrument to provide insights on methodological ways of engaging critically and reflexively. There are few published pieces that have given attention to the complexities of the educational researcher’s identities through the method of critical self-analysis. The researcher’s nine published case studies were critically reanalyzed by using the criteria of excellent qualitative research such as rich rigor to examine the relationship between the researcher’s identities and the quality of qualitative research. The findings suggest that the researcher’s published studies lack sincerity most among other criteria. The layered identities of the …

Method: The interpretive lens underpinned the study. Data were collected from the documents of the African Union Commission (AUC), in which the third mission is both implicit and explicit. We used content analysis as a data analysis technique.

Results: The AUC conceptualizes the third mission as a role of universities, as a social role, as forging partnerships, and as being mutually beneficial …

Dynamics Of Difference: Creating A Translingual Class At Utah State University, Rebecca Elle Smith Apr 2022

Dynamics Of Difference: Creating A Translingual Class At Utah State University, Rebecca Elle Smith

Student Research Symposium

With social justice topics like racial inequality on the rise, some universities are creating curriculum that emphasizes how language standardization privileges some while disadvantaging others. I propose that USU should create an English class that emphasizes linguistic justice topics like the power dynamics and consequences of utilizing languages outside of English in essays and writing projects. My research project investigates what it would take to create a linguistic justice based English class at USU through the lens of translingualism. I created a mixed methods study where I analyzed translingual syllabi and interviewed lecturers in the USU English department about creating …

Making The Old New: The Recontextualization Of Tree Spirits In Video Games, Alexandria Ziegler Apr 2022

Making The Old New: The Recontextualization Of Tree Spirits In Video Games, Alexandria Ziegler

Student Research Symposium

Folklorists study the active rituals between humans and deities, as well as the inactive participation between them in narrative. However, they do not study the active participation that comes in the form of video games between them, though with shifts in society, this new way of engaging through digital forms is widespread and accessible. In my research, I studied Russian and Japanese tree spirits in a variety of video games to understand this new form of engagement with ancient deities. Through the lens of hypermodern and folkloresque folklore, I use the concepts of recontextualization and traditionalization to explain why video …

The Gray Zone Of Irregular Forces: Politically Sanctioned, Local Defense, And Organized Crime Groups In The Philippines, Jennifer Santiago Oreta Apr 2022

The Gray Zone Of Irregular Forces: Politically Sanctioned, Local Defense, And Organized Crime Groups In The Philippines, Jennifer Santiago Oreta

Political Science Department Faculty Publications

The persistent presence of armed groups in local communities is largely due to ineffective community security management, weak rule of law, and the constant shift in peace and security policy guidelines. Compounding the problem is the limited capacity of local government units and the lack of strong political will of officials to address security issues. Irregular forces offering private security services thrive in this environment. Armed groups gain legitimacy since they fill security service gaps in communities and because they assist government security forces in their counterinsurgency operations. Gray zone activities are activities by armed groups that happen in-between the …

How Do Social Media Discourses Shape Gendered Stereotypes Of Women In Entrepreneurship?, Caitlin A. Osei Apr 2022

How Do Social Media Discourses Shape Gendered Stereotypes Of Women In Entrepreneurship?, Caitlin A. Osei

Undergraduate Research and Engagement Symposium

This project uses content analysis from ten various Instagram pages from women entrepreneurs. The analysis highlights what linguistic choices women entrepreneurs use in their social media captions. The captions are also classified based on their framing of women entrepreneurship. Recent studies on women entrepreneurship has found that the Meso/Macro environment plays a role in the growth and development of women entrepreneurs. Taking an analytical gaze on these linguistic choices may open a space to understand the gendering stereotypes of women in entrepreneurship. Additionally, may reveal the gender sub-text that exists in the lingustic choices of women entrepreneurs.

National Politics Forged Through International Competition, Benjamin Underwood Apr 2022

National Politics Forged Through International Competition, Benjamin Underwood

Scholars Week

The Olympics, being arguably the largest stage for athletics in the world, invites much crosswise country competition and national pride. Politicians may use the monumental stage for recreation to craft their own politically charged statements about their country as a whole. For my project, I examine Mexico’s history of performance in the Olympics, then observe political statements and speeches from specifically three Mexican presidents during significant political, social, economic or Olympic performance years. These political statements are recorded in academic articles, political news articles, and some YouTube videos about Mexican Olympic performance. There are three significant years in which I …

Transforming Creativity Skills Into Creative Habits, Bethlem Clavijo Boronat, Halim Choueiry Apr 2022

Transforming Creativity Skills Into Creative Habits, Bethlem Clavijo Boronat, Halim Choueiry

Arab Economic and Business Journal

In a constantly changing and uncertain word, the creative capability is a key skill, not only for professional and personal success, but for survival. Educational systems have traditionally treated creativity as a marginal component of educational programs and, when it has been taught, it has been done in the focus of tools and techniques more than on building a solid creative base for students. This paper analyses the situation of the present-day creativity teaching in Higher Education and determines the key capabilities that allow the students to build a solid creative personality. After that, the paper offers a range of …

Beyond Decolonising – Some Thoughts On The Future Of Marketing/Marketing Research In The Gulf/Me/Na Region, Bronwyn P. Wood

Arab Economic and Business Journal

There is much the MENA/Gulf region can teach regarding the ever-narrowing hegemonic perspectives in the literature - from selfhood, agency, empowerment, women, collectivism, intersectionality to consumption and business practice.

This paper focuses, briefly, on several very large areas of scholarship to consider the issues raised and the opportunities uncovered, as they pertain to the region. The article introduces some important particularities of the region, an overview of some relevant areas of potential future study and outlines how we, as academics, can contribute to a positive future for the Arabian Gulf/ME/NA overall.

Social Media’S Impact On One’S Mental, Physical, And Emotional Well-Being, Alexandria J. Shearer Apr 2022

Social Media’S Impact On One’S Mental, Physical, And Emotional Well-Being, Alexandria J. Shearer

Honors College Theses

Social media is widely used in users’ daily lives and is deeply embedded in the world of technology. Cellular devices and their applications have shown primarily negative effects on individuals’ lives. Studies have shown a lower self-esteem in young adults addicted to their smartphone (Aznar-Díaz, et al., et al. 2020). Another study highlighted the reactions to creating one’s own content versus the implications of consuming content. Individuals who created more than they consumed reported a higher level of self-esteem (Hygen, et al., 2021). While there were many studies regarding social media and wellness of young adults, there were gaps in …

Towards A More Formal Understanding Of Anyāpoha, David P. Kasza Apr 2022

Towards A More Formal Understanding Of Anyāpoha, David P. Kasza

Philosophy ETDs

The aim of this thesis is to investigate if Digṇāga’s commitment that non-observation (adarśanam) of the reason (adarśanam)and property to be proven (sādya) in the dissimilar example (vyatireka dṛṣṭānta) is alone sufficient to ground the exclusion of other referents (anyāpoha), as a valid inference for oneself (svārthānumāna) and proof for others (parārthānumāna). To answer this question, four formal accounts of Digṇāga’s view of the three characteristics (Trairūpya) of inference by Hayes, Katsura, Tillemans, and Oetke were consulted. I argue a formal logical account of …
