The purpose of this study was to investigate what happens to reading engagement and student confidence when targeted instruction and culturally responsive teaching is used in a middle school literacy classroom. Individual instruction in the areas of reading comprehension and fluency, as well as book clubs and literature circles, were used over a three-month period in an effort to motivate striving and reluctant readers and build confidence in their reading skills. Eleven sixth grade students participated in the study, and both qualitative and quantitative research methods were used. Data was collected using a teacher's research journal, audio recordings, surveys, interviews, …

It is a granular tool to clarify the importance except the performance of the teacher in his presentation of the linguistic material. On the basis of that, the examination of the subjects of these curricula according to the principle of (feedback) to present critical studies on them was of great importance, which this study entitled "Critical and linguistic reading in the interrogative style, the Arabic grammar …

Navigating The Cairene Table: Food And Family Between What Is Ideal And What Is Real, Iman Afify
Theses and Dissertations
Our daily encounters with food, especially during our childhood, play a crucial role in shaping and informing our identity and our habitus. In this research, by using multimodal and auto ethnography, I argue that due to the guiding path that our senses carve for us, we make sense and contextualise our surroundings through our senses, and not only the five senses of vision, smell, taste, hearing, and touch, but also through our inner senses of time and temporality, and how time and memory play an important role in the registration of our surroundings through our bodies and senses. I am …

Q&A: Christian, Committed, And Called: An Interview, Linda Gray
Journal of the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning for Christians in Higher Education
After teaching in a Christian University for more than 40 years, three professors who are retiring and have received emeritus status reflect on how students have changed over the decades and how they—as professors—have had to adapt to meet the needs of an ever-changing student body. The three professors were asked four questions: (1) how have students changed during the last four decades, (2) how have the professors adapted to meet the changing needs of students, (3) what was one unexpected thing each professor learned once they started teaching, (4) what advice do the professors have for those still teaching …

Tensions And Pitfalls In The Depiction Of Multiracial Characters In Children's Picture Books: A Critical Content Analysis, Melody Green
Theses and Dissertations
The United States is becoming more and more multiracial, but little research attends to multiracial characters in children’s picture books. This research employed a critical content analysis using the lens of critical race theory to examine eight children’s picture books published after 2000. This study sought to answer two questions. First, using a critical race theory lens, what patterns and tensions emerge in the depictions of multiracial characters in children’s picture books? Secondly, how do the depictions of multiracial characters in children’s picture books perpetuate deconstructed conceptualizations of multiracial identity? Common themes that presented themselves in this study were (a) …

An Absence Of Elephants In The Room: Religion, Philosophy, And Negative Numbers In Albert Girard’S A New Discovery In Algebra, Ethan Wilmes
An Absence Of Elephants In The Room: Religion, Philosophy, And Negative Numbers In Albert Girard’S A New Discovery In Algebra, Ethan Wilmes
Lawrence University Honors Projects
In early seventeenth-century Europe, the lines separating theology, science, and humanism were thin; what the modern reader understands as three distinct spheres of knowledge considerably overlapped with one another. Scientific discoveries and innovations coming from new technologies and foreign lands were laden with implications about theology and the human condition. While bland to all but the most fringe historians of mathematics today, the discovery of negative numbers led to a passionate and occasionally fierce epistemological debate throughout Europe. Falling outside of traditional mathematical knowledge, negative numbers found themselves in a sort of existential limbo; however useful they proved themselves to …

Participants consisted of 11 individuals diagnosed with mild or very mild aphasia and 10 individuals with moderate aphasia;15 who exhibited fluent subtypes and 6 non-fluent subtypes of aphasia. Data from the Corpus of Contemporary American English (COCA) was used to code the word frequency and syntactic category of each word in the language samples. Generally, speakers …
