German Reunification: The Effect On International Joint Ventures, Leonard P. Feldman
Florida Journal of International Law
The German Democratic Republic (GDR or East Germany) and the Federal Republic of Germany (FRG or West Germany) have reunified economically. Western businessmen who seek to invest in Germany have prepared for virtually any possibility, including overnight revision of business plans and concepts. While some citizens who remain in the GDR clash with newly forming opposition parties, many East German residents flee daily to the FRG. Yet within the first few months since the Berlin Wall fell, East-West business partners have signed and negotiated numerous cooperative agreements.
One such cooperative agreement which the GDR and FRG currently are promoting is …

BACKGROUND: Latinos remain disproportionately underrepresented in clinical trials, comprising only 2%-3% of research participants. In order to address health disparities, it is critically important to increase enrollment of Latino smokers in smoking cessation trials. There is limited research examining effective recruitment strategies for this population.
OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to compare the effectiveness of direct versus mass and high- versus low-effort recruitment strategies on recruitment and retention of Latino smokers to a randomized smoking cessation trial. We also examine how the type of recruitment might have influenced the characteristics of enrolled participants.
METHODS: Latino smokers were enrolled …

War, Love, And Journeys: A Comparative Analysis Of Conceptual Metaphors In Political Speeches, Kelly N. Woods
Theses and Dissertations
In convention speeches and inaugural addresses, presidential candidates and newly-elected presidents attempt to persuade listeners to vote for and support them. One persuasive tool that they use in these speeches is metaphor, considered a fundamental form of reasoning (Lakoff & Johnson, 1980). The present study focuses on three conceptual metaphors (POLITICS IS WAR, POLITICS IS A JOURNEY, and POLITICS IS LOVE) used in 40 speeches given by American presidents from 1944 to 2021 in order to see if there are differences in metaphor usage across political party (i.e., Democrat and Republican) and across speech type (i.e., nomination acceptance and inaugural …

It's The Focus On Black Girls For Me: A Mixed Methods Inquiry Into Perceptions Of School Climate, Eshe Price
Theses and Dissertations
Local and national context, along with some educational research, indicate the racialized and gendered challenges Black girls are facing in schools. Although there has been an increase in research centered on Black girls' schooling experiences, few studies investigate the realities Black girls face in rural communities. Accordingly, the aim of this three-article dissertation is to deepen our understanding of Black girls' schooling experiences in order to improve the climate in schools for Black girls in predominantly white, rural communities. The first article is a conceptual paper that unpacks the four tenets of critical race quantitative intersectionality (CRQI). The second article …

A Universally Translatable Explication Of Adam Smith's Famous Proposition On "The Extent Of The Market", Bart J. Wilson, Gian Marco Farese
ESI Publications
Following Adam Smith’s line of argument, we examine the semantics of four economic principles in Chapter III of the Wealth of Nations that compose his famous proposition “that the division of labour is limited by the extent of the market.” We apply the Natural Semantic Metalanguage framework in linguistics to produce a series of explications that are clear and plain, cross-translatable into any language, intelligible to twenty-first-century readers, and faithfully close to the original text. Our paper explicates Smith’s logical argument in Chapter III and demonstrates how his ideas can be shared among speakers with different linguacultural backgrounds in line …

She’S Just Not That Into Me: Sexual Self-Concept Among Heterosexual Men Who Identify As Involuntary Celibates, Kyle J. Justin, Dustin K. Shepler, Joseph R. Kinel
Journal of Social, Behavioral, and Health Sciences
Emerging adult men experiencing involuntary celibacy are increasingly self-identifying as “incels.” Popular culture has painted a negative view of incel men. Nonetheless, almost no research has addressed the experiences of incels or systematically compared incels to their peers to identify whether actual differences exist in psychological functioning. In this study, we surveyed a total of 129 emerging adult men (75 incels and 54 non-incels) to determine if and how incels differ from their non-incel peers. MANOVA results indicated that incels disproportionately struggled with low self-esteem, social anxiety, difficulty approaching women, and optimism about partnered sexual experiences compared to their non-incel …

Visualizing Stories Of Sexual Harassment In The Academy: Community Empowerment Through Qualitative Data, Tommaso Elli, Adam Bradley, Uta Hinrichs, Christopher Collins
DRS Biennial Conference Series
This paper presents the design report of an experimental data visualization art-work that deals with sexual harassment in academic environments. The visualiza-tion employs a qualitative dataset of stories of abuse and aims at nurturing emo-tional involvement by creating connections with the people behind the data. In the paper, we outline our theoretical background, considering previous research on anthropomorphic and artistic visualizations. Successively, we disclose our de-sign approach and discuss the visualizations’ capability to nurture reflection, stimulate conversations, and empower the community of people fighting against sexual harassment in academia and beyond.
Metaphors For Designers Working With Ai, Dave Murray-Rust, Iohanna Nicenboim, Dan Lockton
Metaphors For Designers Working With Ai, Dave Murray-Rust, Iohanna Nicenboim, Dan Lockton
DRS Biennial Conference Series
In this paper, we explore the use of metaphors for people working with artificial intelligence, in particular those that support designers in thinking about the creation of AI systems. Metaphors both illuminate and hide, simplifying and connecting to existing knowledge, centring particular ideas, marginalising others, and shaping fields of practice. The practices of machine learning and artificial intelligence draw heavily on metaphors, whether black boxes, or the idea of learn-ing and training, but at the edges of the field, as design engages with computational practices, it is not always apparent which terms are used metaphorically, and which associations can be …

The Future Of Money As A Design Material, Chris Speed, Jonathan Rankin, Chris Elsden, John Vines
DRS Biennial Conference Series
For many years the primary representation of value has been money. However complex we perceive its material, social and symbolic characteristics, money is now undergoing significant change as it becomes data. This paper explores the implications for design as a series of technological and regulatory shifts are taking place that are changing the representation of money into data. The paper anticipates that it won’t be long before personal bank accounts will be better understood to be personal data stores, and monies held within them are connected to data-driven systems to ‘pay’ for services that we require. Design disciplines are increasingly using journeys as a tool that addresses multiple purposes. Also known as Journey Maps, User Journey, Customer Journey, Experience Journey, or Service Journey, they represent the interaction of a person with a product or service step-by-step. This compilation of data reveals valuable insights for companies, organizations, decision-makers, managers, and service-owners to empathize with their users, triangulate their pain points and identify opportunities for improvement and innovation. Consequently, it is easy to understand the popularity of this method. This paper describes the case of the use of journeys in the easyRights project and presents their value as …

Currently, there are more than 1500 dating applications, allowing people to connect with a single swipe. However, there is a rising concern about the behaviour encouraged by these digital forms of interactions in relation to negative effects on user wellbeing. Using an evocative autoethnographic approach combined with literature review, this study aimed to explore potential connections between the interaction design, user interactions, and user experiences within dating applications by following weekly experiences over four dating applications. The experiences were recorded with a journal, then explored using emotion capture cards, and visualised in emotionally mapped timelines. It was found that even …
